Back-to-School Tips: Save on School Supplies, After-School Care

It’s the beginning of a new school year, and parents with school-age children are faced with many extra expenses, including school supplies, clothing, school lunches, after-school care, extracurricular activities and more.

In the United States, families with students in elementary through high school plan to spend an average of $858.07 on clothing, shoes, school supplies and electronics during back-to-school shopping, down from $874.68 in 2024, based on a survey by the National Retail Federation (NRF).

The NRF reported that K-12 shoppers are budgeting $295.81 on average for electronics, $249.36 for clothing and accessories, $169.13 for shoes and $143.77 for school supplies. The most popular destinations for back-to-school shopping are online (55%), followed by department stores (48%), discount stores (47%) and clothing stores (41%).

“Consumers are being mindful of the potential impacts of tariffs and inflation on back-to-school items, and have turned to early shopping, discount stores and summer sales for savings on school essentials,” NRF Vice President of Industry and Consumer Insights Katherine Cullen said in a press release.

Back-to-school costs can add up and strain the family budget, so parents need to find ways to reduce expenditures. Here are some tips to save money as kids return to school: Shop With a Mission Plan ahead: Make a shopping list and consult with your child’s suggested school supply list so you’re buying the correct items and only what is needed.

Don’t wait: Some experts recommend for families to buy school supply items now to take advantage of the pre-tariff inventory available in stores. When these items are sold out, prices will go up, according to local news outlets.

Compare prices: Shop around (online and in stores) to find the best deals on the items your

After registering in SchoolCafe at https://www. schoolcafe.com/coweta, parents or guardians can go to the online free and reduced school meals application. A new application must be completed each school year even if families qualified the previous year, according to the Coweta County School System’s website.

Find Budget-Friendly After-School Programs Working parents often need some assistance

Coweta County School System The Coweta County School System will offer after-school programs at its elementary schools for the 2025-2026 academic school year. If space is available, students (pre-K through fifth grade) may enroll if they’re properly registered and pay tuition fees.

A $35 registration fee (exact change or check) is due when registering. Spots are limited and parents must register in person. Please note: Many Coweta County schools now have waiting lists for their after-school programs.

The self-supported, non-educational, daycare program is available Monday through Friday from 2:30 to 6 p.m. when school is in session.

Summit Family YMCA The Summit Family YMCA is offering after-school activities for children ages 4 to 13. Students can participate in homework help, snacks and sports activities. There are also teen clubs available, such as E-sports and art.

Pick up is available from several local elementary schools (Newnan Crossing, Welch, White Oak and Willis Road) and middle schools (Arnall Middle and Lee Middle), and parents can also drop off their children. The after-school program lasts until 6:30 p.m. each day school is in session.

If students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, the after-school program fee is $55 per week.

YMCA members will pay $65 per week. Program members who are not full YMCA members will pay $85 per week.

To receive assistance with the costs of childcare, parents can also apply for the Childcare and Parent Services (CAPS) Program at https://georgia.gov/ apply-childcare-and-parent-services-caps-program,

said Nia Jean-Pierre, the youth development director at Summit Family YMCA in Newnan.

In addition, during school breaks (three days or more), Summit Family YMCA offers a camp for school age children from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Howard Warner Boys & Girls Club at 55 Savannah St. in Newnan accepts students from Welch Elementary and Lee Middle schools.

Parents can visit https://bgcma.org/ to create a parent portal account and sign up their children.

The Newnan/Coweta Boys & Girls Club at 72 Wesley St. in Newnan accepts students from Ruth Hill, Jefferson Parkway, Elm Street, Smokey Road and Atkinson elementary schools, Evans Middle School and Newnan High School.

The membership fee is based on family income and might be free of charge for high school students.

At both locations, students can participate in activities related to academic success, college and career readiness, the arts, sports, leadership and more.

With four boys, my dad was constantly informing us “you will help your mother.” A lot of that had to do with cleaning up the dishes, as well as the pots and pans. This was back in the days before Teflon® (insert trademark here so lawyers don’t write letters) coating was on pots and pans.

In other words, those old SOS® pads (insert trademark here …) were what we used. Oh, and “scouring pads.” I also remember needing a lot of “elbow grease.”

Kids have it so easy today. Basically spit on the super no-stick whatever material and wipe it down with a paper towel.

Part of cleaning as you go was putting things away after cleaning them or if needed, into the dishwasher. There are distinct rules about loading dishwashers. One does not put in large pots and pans, those are for the aforementioned “elbow grease” method.

And, gawd forbid, putting drinking cups on the bottom rack goes beyond any form of common sense. Doing so means the water from the bottom sprayers will hit the cups and go no farther.

And let’s make sure we are all on the same page about putting utensils together in their little compartments. Knives with knives, forks with forks and so on. Dad was adamant that forks and spoons face up - eating side up - and handles went in first because - you could fit more in the compartment. He relented on knives and we were allowed to put the sharp blade down so we would not stab ourselves.

Let’s face it, you can tell a lot about someone’s personality just by looking inside their dishwasher. And right about now one spouse is looking at the other and going … “see, even Winters knows.”

The Coweta Shopper first appeared in 1989.

Over the years, the name changed to The Shopper and then The Weekly. The newspaper reverted to its original title in July 2024. Our goal continues to promote local events and consumer-related articles for our readers and our commitment to helping promote local businesses and non-profits.

We have three boys, most know them as the SONS of Thunder, for various and obvious reasons.

The Eldest is a Captain in the U.S. Army. His dishwasher is in perfect alignment. Neat rows of dinner plates, another for smaller plates.

There are specific spots for bowls, cups and glasses. Everything is in order.

Middle is pretty much the polar opposite of his older sibling and having everything in order is just not on his radar. He has other interests and can walk by the bag of garbage by the front door multiple times without even considering it might need to go out to the trash can. Pots, pans, cups on the bottom row, he doesn’t really see the issue. And rinsing off beforehand? That would be a “no.”

Youngest is the carefree, Bob Marley “everything is gonna be alright” one. He is the calming influence and just takes everything in stride. He looks at the dishwater, everything that needs to go in and just figures out how to make it all fit. Won’t be perfect, but that really doesn’t matter, because everything is gonna be alright. He at least does not put pots in the dishwasher.

And then there is Mom, the Little Black Dress.

Outcome: A broader volunteer base will allow us to offer more comprehensive services while maintaining cost-efficiency.

The Coweta Samaritan Clinic began seeing patients in our new onsite Dental Services wing in July 2025. This new onsite service expands upon the offsite dental care we have offered in partnership with the Central Educational Center and West Georgia Technical College since 2013.

We are currently seeing Coweta Samaritan Clinic patients two days a week as we work to recruit more volunteer dentists for the program.

We have hired a part-time Dental Services Coordinator, Lynn Chavez, RDH, who is responsible for coordinating clinical operations, scheduling, managing volunteers, and ensuring seamless patient experiences. As we work to expand our onsite services in the future (from two to four days per week) and engage more volunteer dentists, hygienists, and assistants, her role becomes even more essential.

comprehensive dental care including exams, cleanings, periodontal treatments, restorations, and extractions. More complex cases are referred to local specialists. For many of our uninsured and low-income adult patients, this is the only dental care they have ever received.

Our goals for the program are: Expand Service Availability from Two to Four Days per Week Action: Increase the number of onsite dental clinic days from two to four.

Rationale: Patient demand for dental care currently exceeds available appointment slots.

Outcome: Doubling clinic days will increase patient access and reduce wait times, allowing us to serve at least 150 additional patients annually.

Grow Our Network of Volunteer Providers Action: Recruit and coordinate additional volunteer dentists, hygienists, and assistants.

Rationale: Volunteers are essential to program

Improve Operational Efficiency and Patient Coordination Action: Streamline scheduling, follow-up care, and referrals through centralized coordination.

Rationale: A dedicated coordinator ensures smooth clinic operations and better continuity of care.

Outcome: Improved patient experience, better clinical outcomes, and fewer missed or delayed appointments.

These targeted actions will strengthen our infrastructure and allow us to meet a growing need for dental care in our community. In doing so, we will help more uninsured adults receive critical dental services that alleviate pain, prevent complications, and support overall health and well-being.

A Strong Summer for Real Estate After a slow start in 2025, the local real estate market really picked up this summer. Many local real estate agents were discouraged after the start of 2025. Spring is typically the strongest time for a real estate market. However, the first half of 2025 was weak, with closed sales down every month, year-over-year, from 2024 (per Georgia Multiple Listing Service, GAMLS).

Things started to pick up in May. Pending sales were up over 20% from last year. As a result, closed sales increased 26% and 11% in June and July, respectively. This is an encouraging sign of things to come. August is looking like it will be a strong month as well with many contracts in the pipeline to close.

Compared to the last few years, it is actually a good time to purchase and many savvy buyers have noticed this. The selection of homes to buy is up significantly. In fact, new listings have increased every month, year-over-year, in 2025. Pricing has stayed flat all year as well. The months of supply, or the estimated time it would take to sell all the currently available homes for sale given the current sales pace, has increased also.

Sellers conceding on price, as well as providing closing cost credits to buyers, has been a trend all year long. It is a great time to purchase new construction. Many local builders are offering up to $25,000 in buyer incentives and offering to buy down the buyer’s interest rates also. Interest rates have hovered around 6.5% and 7% all summer. Interest rates seem to be the most significant obstacle in people’s way to purchase, especially for younger buyers. The battle between President Trump and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has been publicly documented all year. The President has put pressure on Chairman Powell to lower the interest rates in hopes that this well lower mortgage rates, among other things, make housing more affordable and jump start the real estate economy. Chairman Powell has yet to do so. Looking at the data for Coweta County this summer, I can see why Powell has not. The numbers look promising, at least locally. If rates drop significantly, we will likely see a large influx of buyers which in my opinion, would shoot prices up very quickly. A slight drop in interest rates over time seems to be the route to take.

So crank up the volume, pull on your bell bottoms (figuratively or literally), and let’s groove our way through aging…with a little help from the hits of the ‘70s. n “You’re So Vain”… But in a good way Let’s get one thing straight: confidence is sexy at every age. Maybe your hair isn’t what it used to be, but you’ve got wisdom, humor, and the ability to tell someone under 30 how to use a rotary phone. Own it.

n “Don’t Stop”… Believin’, Laughin’, Dreamin’ You don’t stop being you just because the calendar says you’re a “senior.” You’re still growing, changing, and discovering. Maybe you’ve swapped out platform shoes for orthopedic ones, but your spirit still knows how to party. Aging isn’t an ending – it’s an encore.

So throw on some Earth, Wind & Fire, twirl around the kitchen, and know that you are and always will be, a “Dancing Queen”— young and sweet, only 65 (and up!). n One Last Thing: “Let’s Stay Together” Aging isn’t a solo act. Stay connected. Laugh with friends. Call your kids (even if they only text). Take the trip, eat the dessert, sing the song — even if it’s off-key.

From animal exhibits and livestock shows to circus acts, contests, educational events, and mouthwatering food—there’s something for everyone to enjoy at this beloved community tradition.

Free Contests & Demonstrations Who doesn’t love free fun? Many of the contests and individual exhibit entries at the fair are free to enter, and you can even win cash prizes! Whether you’re a kid, teen, adult, or somewhere in between, there’s a contest just for you.

Gingerbread House Decorating Contest (PreK–7th grade): All supplies are provided—just bring your creativity! Winning designs will be on proud display at the fair.

Prepare Your Child for a Healthy Start to the School Year

The new school year is in session and now is the time to start preparing for a successful and healthy year ahead.

“It’s a good time of year for getting kids physically and emotionally ready for the next school year: reviewing their health, academic record, their emotional health, making sure their routine health is up-to-date, including their vaccines and physicals,” said Jamison Roberts, M.D., Piedmont Physicians Pediatrics at Fischer Marketplace.

Whether your child is heading to kindergarten or high school, Dr. Roberts offers tips for you to help make sure your child has a healthy school year ahead: Limit backpack weight Children should not be carrying a heavy load as heavy backpacks can stunt a child’s growing body. Backpacks with two padded straps are recommended, and its contents should not weigh more than 15% of your child’s weight. Remember to use both straps so the weight is evenly distributed.

Sleep schedule As the school year approaches, children should gradually ease into an earlier sleep schedule and wake-up time. In general, pediatricians recommend between nine and 12 hours of sleep each night for ages 6 to 12 years old, and teens need eight to 10 hours of sleep.

Healthy eating Students who get proper nutrition are more attentive. It is best to avoid foods with added sugars. For breakfast, whole-grain breads, oatmeal, yogurt, cottage cheese, and fruit are a great way to start the day. A well-balanced lunch and dinner should include protein, whole grains, fruit and vegetables.

Try to avoid offering the same types of food to your child to keep them interested in a variety of healthy options.

Keep hands clean Illnesses and sickness can be spread through the transfer of germs.

Washing your hands is one of the best ways to get rid of germs that could make you sick. Make sure to wash your hands with warm water for at least 20 seconds.

Sports physical Sports teams, and often band groups, require a sports physical for participation as a proactive approach to identifying students who may be at higher risk for injuries or other health conditions.

Sports physicals can be combined during well child visits with your provider. They are also offered at our 75 Piedmont Urgent Care clinics, as well as at Piedmont QuickCare locations based on availability, to

check vitals, heart and lung health, joints, flexibility and medical history to complete any necessary forms.

Wellness check Dr. Roberts encourages parents and guardians to make sure their child’s wellness checks and preventative visits are up-to-date (within the past year). He added that parents should also be checking in on the mental wellbeing of their child, assessing for any emotional or social situations their child may have concerns about.

“Parents should be having really good open conversations with their kids, and also not hesitating to make an appointment so we can put a good success plan in place for the child,” Dr. Roberts said.

Immunizations Certain immunizations are also required for students before starting the new school year. Generally, some school systems will require a vaccine or boosters before starting kindergarten, before seventh grade and before 11th grade. Some colleges and universities may require updated vaccinations as well for incoming freshmen.
