Coach Corby “The Significant and The Insignificant”

One afternoon I was praying with a friend of mine and I remember distinctly praying the following prayer.

“Lord, please help us focus on the significant things in life rather than focus on the insignificant.”

I could not help but think about how much energy we spend on insignificant things. I also couldn’t help but think about how often we spend so much time on the small and meaningless things that keep us from what really matters and what is really important.

Sadly, one day we wake up and find ourselves tethered to a life filled with insignificant things. Each choice we make impacts our daily life and our future. Significant events like graduating from college, getting married, having a child or getting a promotion at work, and yes, sadly, loss can leave an indelible mark on our lives.

Ultimately, the choices we make every day make our lives better or they don’t. They also either invest in eternity or they don’t.

I once read …

“It is choice, not chance, that determines our future.”

To live the life most of us long for is accomplished only through intentional, methodical and decisive planning.”

Our decision to follow through on those choices is almost always the key to our success. Success looks different to different people, but most of us know what success feels like. We feel joy, peace of mind, and sometimes our success can change the trajectory of our lives.

Most of us have heard “Wherever we put our time, talents, and treasure, there is where our heart is.” And that indicates what we value. It can be painful and can cause regret how we spend our money and time, or it can bring us great joy. Looking at our checkbooks, credit cards and bank statements show

where all our money went. The checkbook does not lie. There are many times I wish it did, but it doesn’t. It is then that we must face the truth of the choices we have made.

I hope to start focusing our attention today on what is significant and meaningful. We are never too old to change. It is never too late to change and the Lord is right there to help you. God can remake us and change us as we seek Him.

But here is something ironic - sometimes some of the most insignificant things can actually be significant. We must also remember that sometimes the things in our life that may seem mundane and meaningless are not mundane after all.

I pray we will have eyes to see the significant things of life, yet also not miss out on those seemingly insignificant things that are actually important.

So today, may your dreams and inspirations be fulfilled as you intentionally put your time, your talents, and your treasure toward a life that will leave a significant mark on things. Celebrate the significant things of life, and if the insignificant turn out to significant celebrate those too.

Keep Newnan Beautiful’s May 2nd Paper Shredding and Textile Recycling

Keep Newnan Beautiful is set to host a dual recycling event on Saturday, May 2. The event will feature KNB’s Textile Recycling and Paper Shredding. Both will take place from 8 a.m. to Noon in the parking lot behind Newnan’s City Hall at 25 LaGrange Street.

The Paper Shredding portion … first three bags or boxes are FREE for Coweta County residents. After that, it’s $3 per bag or box.

There are no fees or limits to the Textile Recycling segment.

Below is the list of acceptable clothing, household and entertainment items as well as items that cannot be accepted.

Beware of Scams, Learn to Recognize Red Flags and Avoid Them

These days, it seems like consumers must be constantly vigilant about scammers trying to take advantage of them. There are endless scams being used to rob innocent people of their money, assets and peace of mind, including schemes related to taxes, investments, real estate, social security, utilities, senior citizens, romance, funerals, package delivery and many more.

Older adults, in particular, are targeted by scammers, but people of all ages can fall victim to fraud. Scams are being carried out through phone calls, mail, text messages, emails, fake websites, social media, online ads and even by going door-todoor.

To avoid being exploited, it’s important to recognize the red flags of scams. The Georgia Consumer Protection Division and the Federal Trade Commission offer tips and information to help consumers make wise choices and avoid being conned.

RED FLAGS OF SCAMS

To protect against scams, the Georgia Consumer Protection Division warns consumers to look out for these red flags:

• Someone contacting you unexpectedly and asking you to provide personal or financial information or to pay money to receive a prize, utilities, services, etc.

• High-pressure or scare tactics, such as telling you a loved one is in danger, your computer

has been hacked or threatening to arrest you if you don’t act quickly

• Insisting that you make a payment through gift cards, prepaid cards, wire transfer, cryptocurrency (e.g. Bitcoin) or gold/precious metals

• Promises that seem too good to be true, including get-rich-quick

TYPES OF SCAMS

REAL ESTATE SCAMS: Good Morning America recently reported on a mortgage scam in which a couple trying to buy a home was tricked out of their downpayment money. They received an email, which they mistakenly thought was from their mortgage company, asking them to wire the funds for their downpayment. They didn’t catch the minor misspelling in the email address, and when their broker never received the money, they knew it had been sent to someone else. They quickly called the police and were fortunate to recover most of their money. Before sending a downpayment, experts recommend that homebuyers should call their mortgage broker and realtor to verify that emails are legitimate and immediately call the police if they think fraud has occurred.

IMPOSTER SCAMS: With imposter scams, con artists pose as someone you trust, such as wellknown businesses, government agencies or charitable organizations, to trick you into paying

them money. Here are some examples:

• IRS SCAM: The caller claims to be an IRS agent and says the consumer owes money to the IRS and will be arrested if they don’t pay immediately.

• SOCIAL SECURITY SCAM: Someone calls claiming to be a Social Security Administration (SSA) employee or a law enforcement officer and tells the consumer their Social Security account has been suspended because it’s been linked to criminal activity. The consumer is asked to pay money and/or provide their Social Security number to reactivate their account.

• MEDICARE SCAM: A fraudster, who claims to be from Medicare, contacts the consumer and tries to get them to share their Social Security number, Medicare number or financial information so they can steal their money or commit identity theft. They might say they’re sending “free” medical equipment and the consumer must pay the shipping fee. Or, they threaten to cancel Medicare coverage unless personal information is provided.

• GRANDPARENT SCAM: Pretending to be your grandchild, one of his or her friends, or a law enforcement officer, the scammer calls with an urgent situation requiring that money be sent immediately. For instance, the grandchild has been arrested and needs bail money or became ill while traveling and needs to return home.

• ROMANCE/CONFIDENCE SCAMS: Scammers use photos of other people and create fake online profiles on social media or dating websites. They’re typically charming, profess their love quickly and claim they’re living or working abroad to avoid meeting in person. When they earn the victim’s trust, they ask for money for emergencies, hospital bills or a plane ticket to meet you, and then they disappear.

• FUNERAL IMPOSTER SCAM: Fraudsters search obituaries for funeral details, such as the name of the deceased, names of the surviving family members, date and location of the funeral, and the name of the funeral

• UTILITY SCAM: Posing as a representative from the local gas or electric company, the con artist may call or knock on the consumer’s door, claiming they have an unpaid balance and threatening to shut off services if not paid immediately. They might introduce themselves as utility contractors and say they’ve been hired to replace a meter for a fee and insist on payment to avoid a disruption in service.

home. Then, they contact the grieving family, claiming to be from the funeral home and possibly using spoofing software so the name and/or phone number of the funeral home appears on the caller ID. The scammer claims that a final payment is due, and the funeral will be canceled if not received immediately.

• ORDER CONFIRMATION AND FRAUDULENT TRANSACTION SCAMS: The consumer receives a text message or automated call from someone claiming to represent a major retailer (such as Walmart or Amazon) requesting confirmation of a recent purchase. The consumer is instructed to click on a link or press a certain number if they didn’t authorize the transaction. Then, they’re asked to provide account credentials or payment information so the account can be “credited.”

In other instances, a fraudster poses as a bank or company and calls or emails saying that fraudulent activity has been detected on the account. To confirm that transactions weren’t made by the consumer or to reinstate the account, consumers are asked to provide personal information, such as their email address, debit or credit card number, PIN number and/or login information either directly to the caller or by clicking a link or dialing a phone number.

• PACKAGE DELIVERY SCAMS: The consumer receives a text or email that appears to come from a well-known shipper, such as FedEx or UPS, saying a package couldn’t be delivered and providing a link to track the package or confirm delivery preferences. If the consumer clicks on the link, they’ll be asked to pay for taxes or custom fees and to enter payment information or their Social Security number. However, the package doesn’t exist, and the scammer could also have installed malware onto the electronic device.

WAYS TO PROTECT AGAINST SCAMS

Reduce unwanted telemarketing calls by adding your number to the Do Not Call Registry at donotcall. gov. If your number is on this list, telemarketers are prohibited from contacting you. Any telemarketer who ignores the Do Not Call Registry is either disreputable or a scammer.

Victims should report financial fraud to the financial institution or retailer and request a hold to be placed on the account and a replacement debit or credit card. Consumers should also check their credit reports at annualcreditreport.com and contact credit reporting agencies to place a fraud alert and a security freeze on their accounts: Experian.com, TransUnion.com and Equifax.com.

Veterinary Clinic, Hwy 29 & Pine Rd

A new veterinary clinic could soon be coming to the northwest corner of Highway 29 and Pine Road in Coweta County, near the existing Dollar General. Plans show a two story, 5,500 square foot facility on a roughly 1.7 acre site designed to serve as a full service animal care location.

The proposal, submitted by Blue Frog Engineering on behalf of the developer, includes a variance request to reduce the required building setback along Highway 29 from 135 feet to 105 feet. The adjustment is being sought due to the property’s unique layout, which is bordered by roads on three sides and constrained by overlapping setback requirements.

Convenience Store, Lora Smith Rd

Lora Smith Road is getting a new addition. A 2.88 acre commercial development is moving forward at 2605 GA-34E in Newnan, bringing a modern convenience store with gas, retail, and restaurant space to the area.

The site plans include a 4,500 square foot convenience store with a fuel canopy and multiple pumps, designed for efficient access and flow. The project also includes roughly 4,500 square feet of additional retail space, a 3,000 square foot restaurant with drive thru, and a 1,500 square foot retail component.

This is more than a gas station. It is a little commercial spot with multiple tenant opportunities.

The Toasted Yolk, Thomas Crossroads

A new breakfast and lunch concept is headed to Newnan as The Toasted Yolk Café has signed a lease at the Thomas Crossroads Kroger shopping center. The restaurant will take over the space previously occupied by Duff’s Wings and later Crust & Craft, bringing a different kind of daytime dining option to the area.

The Toasted Yolk Café is built around a straightforward idea. Breakfast and lunch should not feel like an afterthought compared to dinner. The menu leans into that mindset, focusing on dishes people already crave, such as eggs, bacon, and stacked sandwiches, but presenting them with more attention to flavor, consistency, and overall experience.

According to the company, the concept came from a desire to create a place where morning and midday meals are taken seriously. Instead of settling for routine or predictable offerings, the goal is to serve food that people actually look forward to, in an environment that feels energetic and inviting.

Name something that you are extremely glad you did or accomplished.

Personally, becoming a father is a huge and positive game changer. You are no longer the center of your universe. Professionally, getting to a place where your clients and their referrals are your lead source. When I first started in real estate, I wasn’t sure I could get here. It was really tough and took lots of hard work, attention to detail, and caring along the way.

What advice would you give your younger self just starting out on their own.

Relax. Don’t be so eager to please. Trust and believe in yourself. 

The third annual International Female Ride Day event for Newnan will be held on Saturday, May 2nd

This year, we have a new venue – The Coweta County Fairgrounds located at 275 Pine Road. This will be the 20th International Female Ride Day to be held across the globe. The Newnan Ride is an all-female ride planned and led by all-female riders and passengers! It is an incredible way to meet other females who love to ride and by coming together you can help to raise the awareness of women riders across the globe. The day will be a fun-filled day with a ride lasting approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.

After the ride, there will be music, food, silent raffle items, and all for a great cause! The net profit from this event will go to benefit Coweta County Sheriff’s Department Annual Bicycle Build.

For 2026, we’ve expanded the event with a pre-event Bike Night, and registration pick up at Line CreekReserve in Newnan on May 1st from 6-9 p.m. There is also a bike show at the event on Saturday, open to participants and the public. Two Wheels, Can Am Spyder, Can Am Rykers, Trikes and FrankenTrikes Welcome. We do not allow Slingshots for this ride.

Event details and schedule: Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. If, for some reason, you can’t make it, or we must cancel altogether, we will mail your goodie bag. If there is inclement weather, please check your email and the event Facebook page. We will let you know about a date change if needed, or if the event start time needs to be adjusted.

Coweta-Fayette EMC Trust’s 2026 Scholarship Recipients

The Coweta-Fayette EMC Trust hosted its inaugural scholarship dinner on April 14 at the Coweta-Fayette EMC Headquarters, celebrating the achievements and bright futures of local students. The evening was marked by inspiration and recognition, as CEO Chris Stephens honored each recipient by highlighting their academic accomplishments, dedication to community service and plans for the future.

A total of 22 students received scholarships, including seven $1,000 technical scholarships for students attending West Georgia Technical College and Clayton State University and 15 $3,000 Melissa Segars scholarships. Recipients represented the region, with 13 students from Coweta County, eight from Fayette County and one from Heard County.

Scholarship funding is made possible through Operation Round Up, a voluntary program in which CowetaFayette EMC members round up their monthly electric bills to the nearest dollar. These contributions collectively support students, nonprofit organizations and families in need throughout the community. Since its launch at CFEMC in 1993, Operation Round Up has provided more than $6.3 million has been reinvested into our community through scholarships, Bright Ideas classroom grants, and grants to local nonprofits.

Reel in the fun: Annual Youth Fishing Rodeo Returns to Coweta County

Spring is in the air, and that means it’s almost time for one of Coweta County’s outdoor traditions. The Annual Youth Fishing Rodeo hosted by Welcome Farms owner Gary Stallings and Coweta County 4-H. If you’re looking for a fun, simple way to get kids outside and enjoy nature, this is an event you won’t want to miss. Join hundreds of youth as we cast our lines in for a fishing-good time.

The Coweta County Youth Fishing Rodeo will be held on Saturday, May 2, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gates open at 8 a.m. The organizers ask that people not arrive early to alleviate traffic. The event is designed just for youth in pre-K through 5th grade, giving younger anglers a chance to learn, practice, and enjoy fishing in a welcoming environment.

This rodeo is all about hands on experience. Kids must be able to hold a fishing pole on their own, but adults are encouraged to help with baiting hooks and casting. It’s a great opportunity for parents and grandparents to spend quality time with their children while teaching them something new or sharing a skill they already love.

Participants should bring their own fishing equipment and bait. While minnows and shiners are not allowed, there are plenty of simple options that work well, including chicken livers, hotdogs, blood bait, cheese, or dough balls. The pond is stocked with catfish especially for the event, offering plenty of opportunities for young anglers to reel one in.

One important rule to remember: you must keep what you catch. That’s part of the fun and learning experience. Kids get to see the full process, from catching the fish to taking it home, which helps build appreciation for the outdoors and where food comes from.

Do you think you can catch the biggest fish or heaviest stringer of 10 fish? Weigh-in begins at noon, and winners will be announced at 12:30 p.m. Awards will be given in two categories: Biggest Fish and Heaviest Stringer. Participants must be present at the time of the announcement to win, so families are encouraged to stick around and enjoy the full event. A trophy and tackle box is the prize!

Even if your child has never fished before, this is a great place to start. Events like this are more than just catching fish. They help young people build confidence, patience, and a connection to the outdoors. As one parent shared, “It’s their first time fishing and they had a great time.” This promises to be one event where kids can just be kids outside and have a great time without their screens.

In addition to fishing, concessions, and restrooms will be available on-site, making it easy for families to spend the whole morning or afternoon at the rodeo. There is no fishing license required for this event, which removes another barrier and makes it even easier for families to participate.

The Youth Fishing Rodeo is made possible through a partnership between Coweta County Extension/4-H, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Welcome Farms, and Pollard Residential Waste Services. Their support helps create an event that continues to impact hundreds of young people each year by introducing them to outdoor recreation in a positive and memorable way.

Bill Hammond is the Coweta County 4-H Youth Development Agent. His role includes overseeing all 4-H programming in the county including specialty clubs, S.A.F.E. (Shooting Awareness, Fun and Education) teams, volunteers, school clubs, and other 4-H programs and events. It is through his leadership and collaborations with community leaders that he can achieve Georgia 4-H’s mission to assist youth in acquiring knowledge, developing life skills, and forming attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, productive, and contributing members of society.
