Notes from Perry Street
By JOHN A. WINTERS, Publisher
It is time for the Greatest Show On Earth, or at least in these parts!
The 77th anniversary of the Kiwanis Coweta County Fair hits this month. The 11-day event will take place at the Coweta County Fairgrounds, located at 275 Pine Road, from September 18 - 28th.
Some interesting and important information:
Mega Passes
Get them. You will save up to $15 with each one. More importantly, you will not be standing in line for your gate admission ticket. And you won’t have to stand in line waiting (again) to purchase ride tickets.

Save money and save time. It’s a no-brainer. You can stop by Arnall Grocery, Keith Ross Insurance, Summit Family YMCA or the Coweta County Extension Office to buy them. Or, check out the front top corner of our website: http://wintersmedia.net for a link to purchase the Mega Pass online.
Some background
UPDATE A year ago, nearly 45,000 people attended this annual entertainment get-together. The average daily attendance was just over 4,000.
The Coweta County Fair has a long and storied history with the very first fair taking place in 1874. After various interruptions through the years, the Newnan Kiwanis Club took over the County Fair in 1947 and has been the headlining sponsor ever since.
What It’s All About
UPDATE Proceeds from the Fair are distributed within the local community as grants to dozens of organizations who share Kiwanis’ dedication to serving the children of the world. Since 2000, Newnan Kiwanis has donated $5.5 million to the charities of Coweta County from the Fair’s proceeds.
Anything Fried
By the way, the top 10 craziest fair foods are; Funnel Cake; The Classic Corn Dog; Hot Toasted Waffle Ice Cream Sandwich; Deep Fried Cookie Dough; Beer Battered Cheese Curds; Fried Mac and Cheese; Fried Pickles; Frito Pie; Deep Fried Mashed Potatoes on a Stick; Turkey Legs.
More Info
Make sure to check out our website: http://wintersmedia.net for the “All Things Fair” section. We’ve already posted several stories about the Fair and will have daily updates during the actual event.
It is a family-fun event and raises money for several notable charities. Please make plans to attend and we’ll see you there!

Bridging the Gap Operation: Gobble Gobble Thanksgiving Distribution Sponsorships
The Heart of Thanksgiving at Bridging the Gap Thanksgiving is a season of gratitude, togetherness, and family. But for many of our neighbors, the holiday can bring more stress than joy as they struggle to put a meal on the table. At Bridging the Gap, we believe every family deserves to experience the warmth of a holiday meal shared with loved ones.
In 2024, a Thanksgiving box cost just $62, enough to provide a full holiday meal for a family. But as prices continue to rise, that same box now costs nearly $77 in 2025. Inflation may have increased the cost, but it hasn’t changed our mission—to make sure no family in our community goes without a Thanksgiving dinner.
Each Thanksgiving box includes a turkey or ham, seasonal sides, vegetables, dessert, and pantry staples. It’s more than just food—it’s hope, dignity, and the reminder that our community cares.
This year, we invite you to partner with us through Operation: Gobble Gobble to make Thanksgiving possible for hundreds of families across Coweta County and beyond. Whether through financial sponsorship or in-kind donations, your support helps us place these meals directly into the hands of families who need them most. Together, we can feed, serve, and restore hope this holiday season.

Sponsorship Opportunities
Every gift helps us put Thanksgiving on the table for families in need. Join us in Operation: Gobble Gobble and choose the sponsorship level that best fits your ability to give:
$1,000 Harvest Helper → Feeds 13 families
$2,500 Table Setter → Feeds 32 families
$5,000 Gratitude Giver → Feeds 65 families
$7,500 Community Feast Builder → Feeds 97 families
$10,000 Cornucopia Champion → Feeds 129 families
$15,000 Blessings Bearer → Feeds 194 families
$20,000 Thanksgiving Hero → Feeds 258 families
Why Partner with Bridging the Gap?
Local Impact: Every dollar and donation stays in Coweta and surrounding counties.
Efficiency: Over 95¢ of every dollar goes directly into our mission.
Community Recognition: Sponsors will be highlighted on our website, social media, and Thanksgiving distribution event materials.
Together, we can ensure families experience the joy, dignity, and togetherness of a true Thanksgiving meal. Let’s Bridge the Gap this Thanksgiving.
In-Kind Sponsorships
Not every gift has to be financial. We also rely on food donations to help fill our Thanksgiving boxes.
We are seeking:
Stuffing
Cranberry Sauce
Pumpkin Pie Filling
Corn
Sweet Potatoes
Green Beans
Jiffy Mix
Mashed Potato Packets
Gravy Packets
Cream of Mushroom Soup
Cake or Cookie Mix
Mac & Cheese

Every $77 feds 1 family.

Zen Monkey’s News and Musings …

West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) is gaining national recognition for its campus safety efforts thanks to the expertise and leadership of Police Chief James Perry. Earlier this year, Chief Perry was invited to write an article for Campus Safety Magazine highlighting WGTC’s implementation of the CENTEGIX mobile panic alert system. he system allows employees to press a wearable panic button, which instantly notifies campus police of the employee’s name and location.

People are so quick (eager?) to misunderstand each other these days that we can no longer simply say what we mean, we also have to say what we don’t mean if we don’t feel like overly clarifying ourselves after people are already offended.

September 20th at Noon CST/ 1 p.m. EST 1164 Maye Road, Greenville, Alabama 36037
Jimmie McClain was born in Greenville, Alabama to the late Mary Maye-Briggs and Jim Henry “Lyn” McClain. He grew up in Niagara Falls, New York and later made his home in Rochester, where he worked for Eastman Kodak and met his wife, Regina. They married in 2003 and relocated to Georgia in 2004. Jimmie loved spending time with his family, talking about the Lord, and being there for the people in his life. Some of his favorite moments were playing board games with his grandson or catching up with visitors. He even stayed in touch with loved ones far away, often to talk about God or just to remind them they were on his mind. Jimmie will be missed but we will always remember him by the words he lived by: “Let the life I live speak for me.”

He is survived by his wife, Regina McClain; his children, James McClain Jr., Kanisha Jones, and Carl Winfred; father, Clinton Briggs, Sr.; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his siblings, Mary McClain Gibson, Sharlean Briggs, and Clifford Briggs; and a host of extended family and friends.

The Interview with Scott Cortner, Fair Chairman
What is the role of the Fair Chairman?
Coordinate all aspects of the Fair to include administration, operations, amusements, exhibits, contests, entertainment, programming, advertising and sponsorship. All of that is done through various committees whose members volunteer countless hours to ensure we have an entertaining, familyfocused County Fair.
Why does the Kiwanis sponsor the fair?
Kiwanis’ mission is to “Serve the Children of the World.” The Fair provides children and their families an opportunity to enjoy time together in a fun, entertaining, and wholesome environment while also providing us the opportunity to give back to the community through grants from the proceeds of the Fair.
What’s new this year, as in rides or attractions?
We’re thrilled to welcome Primetime Carnival back as our Midway provider, featuring a variety of thrilling rides, family-friendly attractions, kiddie rides, and delicious food options. Primetime does a great job of providing a wide variety of rides for all ages.
For this year’s fair, the plan is to have one or two newer rides, including a roller coaster.
As for entertainment and attractions, we will be featuring the McIntyre Circus, (a crowd favorite
high-wire act), a Diaper Derby, Pumpkin Decorating and Gingerbread House Decorating Contests, our annual Beauty Pageant, live Music and free Inflatables, Games and Crafts in “Harvestland”. Dates and times for all entertainment, contests, etc can be found on our website: cowetacountyfair.net
What are some of the big “crowd pleasers” you’ve noticed over the years?
The Lumberjack and Lumberjill competitions, the farm animals, the “princesses” and “characters,” the inflatables and games in Harvestland, and the variety of food.
How much money has the Kiwanis Club put back into the community?
Over $5.5 million in the last 20 plus years, focused on charitable organizations geared towards improving the lives of children throughout Coweta County.
What would be the perfect fair?
Perfect fall weather with no rain and our normal well-behaved crowds.
What do you enjoy the most during the fair?
Seeing the joy and wonder in the faces of the children. Most rewarding is hosting the Special Needs Children from the Coweta County School System. It is an event Kiwanians try not to miss.

What do you wish more people would do at the fair?
Visit the Exhibit Hall. Each year, there are some fantastic pieces of arts and crafts.
What do you do if you lose your phone, a parent, or have some other question?
Check in at the Information Booth (otherwise known as the “Fruit Stand”). Or contact us through our Facebook Page.
What is the best deal?
Definitely the Mega Pass. It saves you up to $15 on Friday and Saturday and can save you time in line on other days. Mega Passes are on sale now through September 17th at cowetacountyfair.net or in person at Keith Ross Agency, Coweta County Extension Office, Arnall Grocery and Summit Family YMCA.
What day is the best day to attend the fair?

I think Sunday’s are best. We are open Sundays from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Crowds are usually light. If Sunday doesn’t work for you, then the best times would be Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday when we have sponsors offering free entry, which saves you up to $10 per person.
Anything else you want to add?
Once again, I need to thank the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, county officials who support our efforts each year, various county departments that prep the fairgrounds and are on-site throughout the fair to address any maintenance issues that arise, our sponsors who help keep the cost down and the numerous volunteers that make this event possible. We think we have another great event planned for this year and look forward to greeting and entertaining record crowds.

The Park of Hope
On August 23, The City of Hope celebrated the grand opening of The Park of Hope—a revitalized community space designed to bring health, wellness, and joy to families for generations to come.
As part of their community benefit program, the park is a partnership with City of Hope Cancer Center Atlanta, the City of Senoia, the Senoia Street Park Steering Committee, other partners, and local residents. Together, they transformed Coweta Street Park (now The Park of Hope) into a beautiful, accessible green space featuring new basketball courts, playground equipment, and walking trails.
“Our vision for a better future begins right here, where children can be active, strong, and safe. And every time we hear a child laugh on that swing set or someone make a basket, we know we are one step closer to that goal,” said City of Hope Cancer Center Atlanta President Jonathan Watkins.
“Thank you to everyone who brought this vision to life. Together, we are creating spaces of health and hope.”

Public Safety Foundation hosts breakfast for local law enforcement officials ❷

The Newnan-Coweta Public Safety Foundation hosted a breakfast meeting for local law enforcement officials on August 14, 2025. The event was held at Redneck Gourmet in Newnan to thank them for their leadership and to invite them and their departments to the annual public safety appreciation luncheon this fall.
The Public Safety Foundation exists to support first responders in Coweta County and to raise awareness of their hard work year-round.
Foundation Chair Pat Craven welcomed the group and told them about some of the Foundation’s efforts over the years, which have most recently included purchasing equipment such as drones, the purchase of K-9s, and the awarding of scholarships to children of local LEOs.
She noted that the 27th Public Safety Appreciation Week Luncheon is coming up October 9 at the Coweta County Fairgrounds. Individuals and groups who would like to contribute to this effort may send a check to Newnan-Coweta Public Safety Foundation, P.O. Box 1113, Newnan, GA 30264.

What You Need to Know About Atrial Fibrillation
September marks National Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Awareness Month. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), AFib is an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia), a condition where the heart beats in an irregular, often fast, way. When a heart is in AFib, it may not be pumping enough oxygen-rich blood out to the body, which can led to other heart-related complications.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) it is estimated that 12.1 million people in the U.S. will have AFib in 2030. While it is the most common type of arrhythmia, many people do not know they have AFib until they are at a routine doctor’s appointment or they are hospitalized for complications caused by AFib. Compared to people without, those with AFib, even without symptoms, have a fivetimes-greater risk of stroke, three-times-greater risk of heart failure and two-times-greater risk of dementia.
Board-certified electrophysiologist and cardiologist Aaron Cole Richardson, D.O., says it is important for residents to increase their awareness of atrial fibrillation and other common conditions treated by electrophysiology, because without treatment, AFib can lead to blood clots, stroke, and heart failure.
Symptoms can include:
• Rapid or irregular heartbeat or pulse
• Skipped heartbeats
• Chest palpitations (common)
• Lightheadedness or fainting
• Confusion
• Extreme fatigue
• Shortness of breath
• Chest pain, or angina (seek immediate medical attention at an emergency room)
Dr. Richardson cautions patients not to overlook the more subtle symptoms, such as fatigue, if they do not experience palpitations, as they may or may not be present.

“Different patients have different symptoms. Some describe AFib as feeling like skipped heartbeats; some as an erratic heartbeat, strong heart palpitations, or simply a rapid heartbeat; while for others it feels like a fluttering, butterflies or even a flopping fish in their chest; while some patients don’t have any symptoms at all,” says Dr. Richardson. “If you suspect you may have this condition or another cardiac issue, he recommends scheduling an appointment with a cardiologist as soon as possible.”
Dr. Richardson also recommends seeing your primary care physician (PCP) annually and to be aware of any factors that may increase your risk of AFib, including high blood pressure, a prior heart attack or heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, and prior heart surgery. Controlling these risk factors may prevent AFib from developing.
In addition to regular check-ups with your PCP, Dr. Richardson recommends self-monitoring your heart at home, and checking it on a daily basis.

Piedmont celebrated the opening of Piedmont Primary Care at Arbor Springs, located at 9 Arbor Springs Terrace, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 20 to mark this milestone in bringing expanded access to primary care in Newnan. With three primary care providers now accepting new patients, and soon a pediatrician, the Arbor Springs location brings more convenient, personalized care to the community. This new clinic offers same-day appointments, online scheduling, and video visits, making it easier than ever for patients to connect with trusted providers. To schedule an appointment, call 770.400.7270 or visit piedmont.org.
“If you notice your heartrate is greater than 110bpm at rest and/or irregular, it’s probably time to visit and talk with your doctor about it,” explains Dr. Richardson.
While AFib is serious, Dr. Richardson says that early detection and management are key.
“People can live long, healthy and active lives with AFib. Controlling your risk factors for heart disease, stroke and knowing what can trigger your AFib will help improve your long-term management of AFib. The most important thing you can do is work with your doctor or other health care professionals to make sure you’re doing all you can to prevent complications that could occur as a result of AFib,” says Dr. Richardson.

Dr. Richardson is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology. He specializes in the treatment of heart rhythm disorders ranging from atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, heart block, bradycardia, atrial flutter, premature ventricular contractions, and ventricular tachycardia, with a special interest in the treatment and management of atrial fibrillation, leadless pacing, and cardiac resynchronization therapy.
Available at Piedmont Heart Institute in Newnan and Fayetteville, Dr. Richardson welcomes new patients and accepts most insurance plans. To schedule an appointment, visit piedmont.org

The Real Estate
A Strong Summer for Real Estate
After a slow start in 2025, the local real estate market really picked up this summer. Many local real estate agents were discouraged after the start of 2025. Spring is typically the strongest time for a real estate market. However, the first half of 2025 was weak, with closed sales down every month, year-over-year, from 2024 (per Georgia Multiple Listing Service, GAMLS).

Things started to pick up in May. Pending sales were up over 20% from last year. As a result, closed sales increased 26% and 11% in June and July, respectively. This is an encouraging sign of things to come. August is looking like it will be a strong month as well with many contracts in the pipeline to close.
Compared to the last few years, it is actually a good time to purchase and many savvy buyers have noticed this. The selection of homes to buy is up significantly. In fact, new listings have increased every month, year-over-year, in 2025. Pricing has stayed flat all year as well. The months of supply, or the estimated time it would take to sell all the currently available homes for sale given the current sales pace, has increased also.
Sellers conceding on price, as well as providing closing cost credits to buyers, has been a trend all year long. It is a great time to purchase new construction. Many local builders are offering up to $25,000 in buyer incentives and offering to buy down the buyer’s interest rates also. Interest rates have hovered around 6.5% and 7% all summer. Interest rates seem to be the most significant obstacle in people’s way to purchase, especially for younger buyers. The average sales price in Coweta County has been between $438,000 and $485,000 each month in 2025. This price, amortized at the current rates, makes purchasing very difficult for buyers with lower incomes.
The battle between President Trump and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has been publicly documented all year. The President has put pressure on Chairman Powell to lower the interest rates in hopes that this well lower mortgage rates, among other things, make housing more affordable and jump start the real estate economy. Chairman Powell has yet to do so. Looking at the data for Coweta County this summer, I can see why Powell has not. The numbers look promising, at least locally. If rates drop significantly, we will likely see a large influx of buyers which in my opinion, would shoot prices up very quickly. A slight drop in interest rates over time seems to be the route to take.

Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/

Wednesday (season 2, part 2, September 3) –After taking on a Hyde in season 2, part 1, and finding herself thrown through a window and left in a coma, the fearless, pint-sized, detectivein-training Wednesday Addams lives again in the second half of this year’s exciting, spooky, and darned entertaining series. The spin-off of the popular 1960s show stars Jenna Ortega as the title character, alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones as her mother, Morticia, and Luis Guzmán as Gomez. Steve Buscemi joins season two as Principal Dort, and Christina Ricci (who once played Wednesday in the 1990s film adaptations) returns from season one to play villain Marilyn Thornhill, a disgraced Nevermore Academy teacher.

Highest 2 Lowest (premieres September 5) –
l NO Fix Rating 5/10 – Quickly after a limited theatrical run just last month, Spike Lee’s latest collaboration with Denzel Washington finds itself available at home. There is an intentional falseness on display in “Highest 2 Lowest,” Lee’s experimental remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic “High and Low.” While the flat soap opera approach taken by Lee is well-intended, it’s not the kind of filmmaking that will resonate with today’s modern audiences. The kidnapping narrative has Washington playing a music executive having to make a life and death decision on the eve of a big business deal.

Warfare (September 12) – l Fix Rating 10/10: “Warfare” is a riveting and essential cinematic achievement. Having made a limited theatrical run in April, HBO Max subscribers can now experience this Alex Garland (see “Civil War”) and Ray Mendoza (a former Navy SEAL) co-directed picture from the safe confines of their living rooms. By relying upon the tangible remembrances of U.S Navy SEALs, including the film’s co-director and co-writer, Ray Mendoza, viewers are taken inside the experiences of soldiers on modern battlefields. Home theaters will come alive with the excellent combination of immersive visuals and authentic sound design, placing the viewer at the center of a 2006 battle in Ramadi, Iraq.

The Paper (premieres on September 4) – This mockumentary-style sitcom is a spin-off of “The Office.” The story has the documentary crew training their cameras on a struggling newspaper named The Truth Teller. When Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson) takes over the publication as the editor-in-chief, to save the business, he must deal with the oddball staff, who have minimal real newspaper experience. Oscar Nũnez reprises his “The Office” role, once again playing Oscar Martinez in “The Paper.”
Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare (September 5) and Screamboat (September 12) – These two films are part of a new sub-sub-genre referred to as “public domain horror” that preverts classic children’s intellectual property into something lurid and possibly creepy. Both films come from Jagged Edge Productions, the same low-budget company that gave us “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.” “Neverland Nightmare” is a slasher in which a villainous Peter Pan terrorizes
Wendy and her friends. “Screamboat” is based on the classic “Steamboat Willie” that entered the public domain in January of last year. Nightmares are sought by turning Mickey Mouse into a gruesome killer.

Game Shows Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune (streaming for the first time starting September 9) Only Murders in the Building (season 5, threeepisode premiere on September 9, followed by a new episode dropping every Tuesday) – The podcasting threesome investigates the alleged murder of their doorman, Lester, this time around. Of course, the murder was thought to be accidental, but is it? New cast members include Renée Zellweger, Christoph Waltz, KeeganMichael Key, and Dianne Wiest.
Chad Powers (two-episode premiere drops on September 30, followed by weekly installments) – Glen Powell (see Netflix’s “Hit Man”) stars and serves as a co-creator of this sports comedy series inspired by the viral Eli Manning “Chad Powers” sketch from 2022. The story features Powell playing a disgraced college quarterback who invents a fake identity named Chad Powers and walks onto a Southern college team.

Lilo & Stitch (September 3) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – The ongoing live-action repackaging of Disney’s animated library has produced uneven results. Earlier this year, we got “Snow White,” a movie that no one really wanted but a project the studio desperately needed. Its failure on numerous levels led to an estimated $115 million loss for the company, which is less than Disney shelled out to make “Lilo & Stitch.”
The good news for Disney is that the relatively bargain production of “Lilo & Stitch” paid off handsomely, grossing over $1 billion worldwide this year. This movie is terrific family entertainment, pushing “cutes” over lardedup social messaging. While a concentration on family values underlies this bright and whimsical narrative, the light-hearted tone is exactly what propelled Disney films of the past and will hopefully move them forward.
In October, for your Streaming pleasure, look for Last Frontier and Down Cemetery Road on Apple. The latest season of The Diplomat is on Netflix - where politics are fun and exciting. All the people are beautiful.
On TV networks the Chicagos are back, SNL, Elsbeth, Matlock, Ghosts and more.
Options to consider for exterior audio
Outdoor entertaining areas are increasingly coveted by homeowners looking to blend the comforts of indoors with the accessibility to nature backyards provide. Homeowners do much to enhance the comfort and functionality of backyard spaces, and one way to elevate these spaces is through the installation of audio capabilities.
The ability to listen to an audio book while floating in the pool or stream a party playlist while hosting a barbecue enhances outdoor spaces. Individuals have various options to consider when seeking to upgrade their outdoor sound capabilities.
· Portable Bluetooth speakers. Bluetooth technology revolutionized the way various devices exchange data. Bluetooth utilizes short-range radio waves to connect and share information without a need for wires. That means it can connect devices like smartphones and computers to items like headphones and speakers. Homeowners who want a simple way to bring audio outdoors can look to portable speakers, which range in size from tabletop versions to larger, tailgate-style speakers. Many offer quality sound that is easily queued up when needed.
· Wireless stationary speakers. Similar to portable speakers, wireless stationary speakers designed for the outdoors employ Bluetooth technology through portable speakers or a networked computer Wi-Fi connection. Each are mounted to deck railings or are placed around the yard. Interference can affect these types of speakers, depending on placement and distance from the device that is playing the music. They may be sufficient for the casual listener.
· Wired outdoor speakers. Wired outdoor speakers need to be hooked up to an amplifier inside a home with wires. Although it sounds complicated, typically it’s a job a do-it-yourselfer can handle; otherwise, qualified technicians can do it for homeowners. Wired systems may not come with the same hassles of connectivity dropping or even having to replace/ recharge batteries, depending on the model chosen. Plus, once they are installed, homeowners have little to do other than utilize the speakers and enjoy their time spent outside with music, sports games, podcasts, and more.
· Cone size and wattage matters. Cone size and wattage of the speakers affects the ability of the speakers to provide quality audio, according to Outdoor Speaker Depot. Larger cone size will offer superior, low-frequency response, which helps in large backyards. The larger the cone, the more bass it will provide. A greater wattage range also enables a better volume increase and improved sound quality at lower volumes. For 300 to 500 square feet, wattage of 80 to 100 might suffice. Larger areas will need wattage of 150, 175 or higher for clear, sharp sound.
Homeowners should discuss audio needs with an electronics professional, who can help them choose outdoor speakers that will make exterior living spaces more enjoyable.

Guest Columnist Steve Swope
Dear Editor,
There has been a lot of discussion, correct information, disinformation, and chaos about the proposed Project Sail data center in western Coweta County. Those of us who are members of Citizens for Rural Coweta are in favor of data centers coming to Coweta County, but they should be in the many areas already zoned for industrial development, not in areas rezoned from Rural Conservation. Since January, we have been vocal about our objections to the proposed rezoning, at Commission meetings, in one-on-one meetings with commissioners, and with Coweta County staff.
In July, Citizens for Rural Coweta was contacted, through our attorney, about attending a meeting with the developer, Prologis. Prologis said they would give us an update on their plans for western Coweta, answer questions, and have a general discussion. We welcome such an open dialogue. Before agreeing to their invitation, we made it clear that we would meet with them only if our legal counsel could also attend. Our desire to have our counsel present was for two reasons. First, we wanted to be absolutely certain that neither our organization nor Prologis crossed any legal boundaries. Second, we wanted to avoid the frequent problem that each side has a different interpretation of the discussion and there was no binding tacit agreement on anything. To be fair, to all concerned, we invited Prologis to have its legal counsel present as well.
J.C. Witt of Prologis disagreed with our commonsense approach. He told one of our leadership team that with lawyers present, the discussion would turn into a deposition. That was never our intent. We expected the attorneys would attend to take notes, interject if any statutes were on the verge of being broken and make a clear record of the meeting that would be transparent and publicly available. Since that offer, we have not had a response.
To allay Mr. Witt’s concerns, we are making a different offer to facilitate a meeting. We will have five members of Citizens for Rural Coweta present; they can bring the same number from Prologis. We stipulate that what they tell us is not the final form of their plans, but informational and for discussion. We simply ask that members of the media be able to attend and report on the discussions. We will limit the media members to three reporters. It seems logical that anything Prologis would like to tell us, they would be happy to tell the larger community. If not, what is the point?
We are also prepared for what we expect will be a large public relations campaign by Prologis. It will not be the least bit surprising to hear them promote themselves as “community friendly” and a “good neighbor” to Cowetans. We suspect that in a public relations campaign they will not commit to staying in our county for 20+ years because most developers, like Prologis, intend on “flipping” the data center rather than operating it. They will not endorse paying impact fees that would cover the costs for infrastructure improvements due to the planned 10 years of construction. They won’t publicly commit to any huge and meaningful tax revenue for the county without any property tax abatements. We will not hear anything about funding a bond to dismantle almost five million square feet of buildings when it is eventually decommissioned. You will not hear about any of these prominent issues mentioned in their public relations campaign.
Good neighbors care for those around them. I have great neighbors, and I respect their property values, their rights, and the quiet rural life that they enjoy. We work together to make our community better. We look after each other’s homes when someone is out of town. We call when we think a neighbor is ill. We are of diverse backgrounds, religions, political opinions, and viewpoints. But we are neighbors. I would not intentionally do anything that would disrupt their lives; and I know they in turn give me the same respect.
Real neighbors are like that, they really care. Others are neighbors in name only. They don’t mind barging in to an area, stripping the land of 800+ acres of timber, sucking up 9 million gallons of water, burning through 900mw of electricity, generating hundreds of tons of trash daily and putting those around them through ten consecutive years of intensive, ongoing, loud, dusty, disruptive construction, and then running with the profits back to San Francisco, California. Some neighbor! One commissioner during the discussion on Project Peach said he would welcome such a neighbor in his backyard. Well, commissioner, you can have this one if you want them.
A company that fears having legal representation in a meeting, even when their own lawyer can be included, who for the sake of profit won’t consider areas already zoned for industrial use, and wants to industrialize acres of land zoned for Rural Conservation, and subject those around them to ten long years of construction does not fit the character or definition of a good neighbor, at least here in Coweta County. If this prospective neighbor wants to meet with us and they are willing to have either legal counsel or the media in attendance, we will meet with them and listen. We will really listen. That is what good neighbors do.
I am Steve Swope, a long time resident of Coweta County. I have been involved in our county in many different ways, including serving on the Airport Authority, Public Facilities Authority, Superior Court Bailiff and Precinct Manager on Election Day. After living in downtown Newnan for 22 years, my wife, Marie and I moved to western Coweta County 18 years ago. We love the quiet, peaceful area that this part of the county provides. Now that is being threatened by a massive data center development that logically could be better placed in areas already zoned for industrial use. Project Sail belongs in a heavy industrial location, not in western Coweta County. For more information visit www.stopsail.com
