Notes
John A. Winters, Publisher, Editor john@wintersmedia.net
from
Corby Carlin Winters,
Perry Street There are two kinds of people in the world. Examples include boxers or briefs; overlapping or against-the-wall toilet paper rolls; and using your cell phone as a phone up against your ear and mouth OR as a walkie-talkie. I have a certain aversion to listening to people’s conversations, especially when it involves some aunts’ hemorrhoids. But if you want to see the world in a microcosm, you really must visit the annual Kiwanis Coweta County Fair. White, Black, Hispanic, Indian, Asian, alien, folks from Alabama - they are all there. Every size, color, weight, height. Jocks, cheerleaders, band members, nerds, divas, furries, and on and on. And every sexual orientation comes too. And I love seeing such a diverse Coweta County. Each year, I work one of the gates collecting tickets and teacher/student passes. So I see everyone coming through. They’re all happy, friendly, and ready for a good time. Except for the Bobs of the world. There are always a few Bobs, and well, some people just like to watch the world burn. Karens too. Yet, there are really only two types of Fair people. Those who keep their tickets attached, and those who separate them into single tickets. So, after a few years of research, here is how you know who separates and who keeps them together to maintain world order. A couple on a date, and she hands me both tickets attached. She bought them. She is not sure he is the right one either. Older couple: he hands me two attached tickets. Pure chivalry. Mom holding 10 tickets hands them to me and makes a circle motion with her hands, showing who’s in the inner sanctum. Not only did she buy the tickets; she runs that house. Dads with teenagers: Every ticket is taken apart because he is just not in the mood to deal with their angst. Young couples with babies in strollers: Always attached; their hands are already full with baby stuff. High school couple on a date. Almost always torn because he does not want to appear overbearing. Me: are you on a date? Him: Yes. Me: Then you hand me both tickets, be a gentleman. Girl: slaps him, turns to me and goes, “thank you.” High school couple on a date, Part 2: He hands me the attached tickets. Me: Nice move. Him: Yes sir, you taught me that last year at the Fair. His date smiles at him. That kid will go far. And then there was the one dad who watched me thank a mom for handing me 10 attached tickets. He looked right at me, and then tore his four tickets apart and handed them to his wife and two kids with an evil smile. “Karma is knowing your credit card is going to be declined at the ticket window, and you can’t buy tickets for the rides, and your kids are going to freak out in public,” I smiled in response. On behalf of Newnan Kiwanis, thank you for coming to the Fair. Over the years, we have returned well over $5 million to the community through grants and scholarships. We could not do it without your support. The Kiwanis International slogan is “Serving the Children of the World.” Our local club takes that to heart, and every member will show up on the sole Tuesday of the Fair. We open it up early and more than 600 special-needs kids and adults, parents, and caregivers get free rein on the rides. We do it because of the photo to the right. Again, thank you for making this happen.

Cancer Wellness Center Offers Support Along Breast Cancer Journey The Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Center at Piedmont Newnan offers a monthly breast cancer survivor group open to those in any stage of their breast cancer journey. The group provides information, emotional support, education and resources for breast cancer survivors. The next meeting is Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. and is held at the center located at Piedmont Medical Plaza 1, 775 Poplar Road, Suite 340, in Newnan, next to the hospital. Cancer Wellness is a free program for anyone who has ever been diagnosed with any cancer at any point in their cancer journey whether treated at Piedmont or not. The classes and services focus on six aspects of wellness: Creativity, Nutrition, Knowledge, Exercise, Relaxation and Socialization. A full calendar of events can be found at www.piedmont.org/cancerwellness.
What to Know Piedmont Oncology highlights the importance of early detection, screening and high-quality treatment options. According to the Centers for Disease Control, breast cancer is the second most common cancer and cancer-related cause of death among women in the United States, with one in eight women being diagnosed in their lifetime. Piedmont Oncology recommends women start annual mammograms at age 40. People at high risk based on family history or other factors should begin at age 30. There is hope because when caught in its earliest stages, the five-year relative survival rate for breast cancer is 99%. Annual mammograms can be conveniently scheduled online at PiedmontMammo.org. “It is essential that women prioritize breast health,” breast surgeon Frank Powell, M.D., says. “In addition to annual mammograms, women should do at-home selfbreast exams at the same time each month while in the shower, in front of a mirror or lying down to catch any changes with their breasts.” Piedmont Oncology doctors, nurses and navigators work together to provide personalized high-quality treatment plans for patients diagnosed with breast cancer. “Innovative breast cancer treatment options may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy or clinical trials,” Dr. Powell explains.” Visit Piedmont.org/cancer for more information about breast cancer, a step-by-step guide to at-home self-exams and supportive services.

Medicare Is Changing in 2027 Here’s What You Need to Know Before Open Enrollment
By Guest Columnist Rudy L. Flores If you have Medicare, October is no longer a month to simply toss another envelope into the “deal with it At the same time, Medicare will implement negotiated prices for additional high-cost medications. That later” pile. could provide savings for some people taking those medications, although the actual impact will depend on Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7, and the decisions you the drug, the plan and the individual’s coverage. make during that window can affect your premiums, prescriptions, doctors and out-of-pocket costs for the Medicare Advantage beneficiaries have another important reason to pay attention this year. Plans can entire year ahead. change their premiums, benefits, provider networks, drug formularies and service areas from one year to the next. Some plans may also leave certain markets. For 2027, there are several changes Medicare beneficiaries should have on their radar.
One of the biggest areas to watch is prescription drug coverage. The standard Part D deductible is projected That makes the Annual Notice of Change, or ANOC, one of the most important pieces of mail you will receive to increase from $615 in 2026 to approximately $700 in 2027. The annual Part D out-of-pocket limit is also this fall. Your plan should send it before the end of September. Don’t just look at the monthly premium. Look at the entire picture. scheduled to increase to $2,400. Are your doctors still in network? Is your hospital still included? Are your prescriptions covered, and at what tier? Has your preferred pharmacy changed? Are there new prior-authorization requirements? What will your maximum out-of-pocket exposure be if you have a bad year medically? And remember something that is often overlooked: Original Medicare does not have an annual outof-pocket maximum. Medicare Advantage plans generally do have a maximum for covered services. Medigap can provide another way to manage certain costs when paired with Original Medicare. For those whose Medicare Advantage plan is ending or leaving their area, there may also be special protections that aren’t available to everyone who voluntarily changes coverage. That is an important distinction and one worth understanding before making a decision. My advice is simple: don’t automatically renew just because you’ve been happy with your plan. Review it. Medicare isn’t one-size-fits-all. The plan that worked well for you this year may not be the plan that best fits your doctors, prescriptions, health needs or budget next year. The good news is that you don’t have to navigate it alone. Medicare.gov provides plan-comparison tools, and free counseling is available through your state’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). Whether you work with a counselor, an independent Medicare professional or do the research yourself, take the time to review your coverage before December 7. A few hours of careful review now could prevent some very expensive surprises in 2027.

October read … Frankenstein
Mary Shelley was a nepo baby … if they had nepo babies in 1797. She was the daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft, a pioneering feminist philosopher who wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (you can thank me for not suggesting that as our October read) and William Godwin, a famous political philosopher often called a founder of philosophical anarchism. Mother died soon after Mary was born. After her mother’s death, her father provided an intellectually stimulating childhood. Later father married widow neighbor lady who had a daughter. Dead mom, single dad, stepmother issues ensue, I’m guessing. At the age of 14 she met and fell in love with an acquaintance of her father’s … Percy Bysshe Shelley before he became famous or infamous. Percy had been married and he and Mary didn’t marry until after Shelley’s first wife, Harriet, committed suicide. They eloped and moved to Europe. Teen bride?

During a damp, raining summer in Switzerland in 1816, 18 year old Mary Shelly, husband poet Percy, Lord Byron (She Walk’s In Beauty and many more poems of the Romantic variety), John William Polidori (possibly the creator of the vampire genre), and Mary’s stepsister Claire Clairmont spent time together and at some point Lord Byron challenged them all to a ghost story competition.
Byron produced “A Fragment,” which later inspired John Polidori to write The Vampyre. Mary completed her short story back in England, and it was published as Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus in 1818. Worried that men would not read a story by a woman she published anonymously. This short gothic horror story deals with a scientist who creates a humanoid monster that returns to persecute him. A famous epigraph - “Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay To mould me man, Did I solicit thee From darkness to promote me?” originally from John MIlton’s Paradise Lost describes the whole premise. In Milton’s work Adam asks his creator whether he ever asked to be created from the dust or placed in paradise. Frankenstein is about the relationship between the creator and the

Coweta Graduates SAT Scores rise in 2026
The Coweta County School System’s average composite SAT score for the graduating class of 2026 rose nine points over the previous year’s class, placing Coweta graduates well above state and national averages on the college entrance exam. Coweta Schools’ average SAT score rose to 1085 in 2026, 74 points above the national SAT average on the college entrance exam, and 54 points above the state average, comparing this year’s results for all public school students in the state of Georgia and the U.S.
Georgia students have outscored the nation on average SAT performance for the last nine years. Coweta Schools have outscored state and national SAT averages for several years, and this year’s rise followed a 14 point average increase in 2025 among Coweta graduates. When 2026 results for all schools are compared – including SAT averages for student test-takers in all public schools as well as private schools – Coweta high school graduates continue to outperform state and national averages. Comparing average SAT scores for test-takers in all schools in 2026 shows Coweta high school graduates 40 points above the national SAT average on the college entrance exam, and 22 points above the state average for all public and private schools. Coweta Schools’ average SAT was also 22 points above the College Board’s reported “Global” SAT average of 1064 in 2026. The College Board’s annual SAT report presents data only for students in the class of 2026 who took the SAT during high school, SAT takers are counted only once, and only the most recent score is included. “However you compare us, our high schools and our graduates continue to outperform their peers state and nation wide,” said Coweta Superintendent Evan Horton. “That delivers real results for students and our whole community. Our focus as a school system is about building the competitiveness of our graduates, whether that is through college readiness or other post-secondary paths. By investing in students and helping them achieve this level of performance, we are making a difference for our students, and making Coweta County the kind of place that others want to invest in as well.” “This level of performance is the result of several years of good work from all Coweta schools, pre-K through 12th grade, and the support of parents and our community in that work,” said Horton.
Abby’s Closets
Abby’s Closets are restocked every month of the school year and this process is well underway with the help of dedicated Abby’s Closet volunteers. We are also in the process of updating and reorganizing many of our original spaces over the next few weeks to make them as welcoming and as user friendly as possible for each and every student who visits. We are experiencing an unexpected increase in demand and usage of Abby’s Closets this school year and we pray they can meet student’s needs and provide the tools to feel supported. Thank you for embracing this meaningful outreach that truly reflects the excitement Abby felt to shop for school supplies and her heart for making sure everyone feels accepted and loved.
“Our collective efforts in K-12 literacy and math, along with expanded Dual Enrollment, Advanced Placement, and Career and Technical Education programs, continues to pay off,” said Dr. Chase Puckett, Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction. “Our relentless focus on ensuring high expectations and delivering a high-quality education in every classroom across our district continues to make a real difference for our students and our community.” “I am extremely proud of Georgia’s class of 2026 for becoming the ninth in a row to beat the national average for public school students on the SAT,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. National Teen Driver Safety Week October 18-24 It is a week of safe and responsible driving awareness held every 3rd week of October. Not many people know this week exists. We are here to change that. October 18-24 will focus on building safe driving habits and opening conversations between teen peers and between parents and teen drivers. Abby’s Angels Foundation has hosted this life saving week and partnered with Coweta County High Schools, the Coweta County Sheriff’s Department and Newnan Police Departments for the past several years. Through engaging campus activities, sharing our personal story and Abby’s life with high school students and providing information and awareness; the goal is to promote positive prevention and empower young drivers to pledge to help share our #1Life1Choice safe driving mission.

Announcing the 2026 Christmas Parade
This year the City of Newnan will also present the “Spirit of Newnan” award to the home on the updated parade route which best represents community, hometown pride, and the Christmas spirit.
The City of Newnan recently announced it will host the annual Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 12 at 6pm in downtown Newnan. The theme this year is “Candy Cane Lane” and includes the following award categories:
Mayor Shepherd shared, “Christmas is the season when all of Newnan comes together. We’re a city that keeps its traditions, and the parade is one of our best. There’s nothing quite like a cold December night downtown, the sidewalks full, kids waving at every float that goes by. I’m looking forward to getting into the Christmas spirit with everybody, and I hope every church, school, team, and business that’s ever thought about entering signs up this year.”
• Grand Champion (best float) • Candy Cane Lane Award (best use of theme)
The Christmas Parade Committee is being led by Stephanie Beck, City Hall Administrative Specialist, and Andrew Moody, Special Projects Manager. All applications to participate in the parade must be received by pm on December 4.
• Rudolph’s Choice Award (fun entry that stands out in a special way) • Santa’s Little Helper Award (for an outstanding group of young Christmas helpers, capturing the magic of Christmas)

Gingerbread House Build From Special Reports Do you have what it takes to build the greatest gingerbread house in Coweta County? The Newnan-Coweta Habitat for Humanity is hosting its 10th annual Great Gingerbread Build and Marketplace at the Newnan Historic Train Depot at 60 East Broad Street on Sunday, Dec. 13 from 1 to 4:30pm. A family-friendly competition, this timed and judged gingerbread building contest will include registered teams. Each team will be provided with a gingerbread kit and is encouraged to bring EDIBLE decorations to make their house stand out. A “ building materials” area is provided but if you need something specific to your design…here are some ideas … • Powdered Sugar _ snow, you know • • • • • •
Ice Cream Cones _ trees, maybe some turrets Candy Canes _ maybe fence, street lamps Nuts _ roofing material Pretzel Rods _ logs or firewood
Graham Crackers _ most any structure support M&Ms _ for snacking
Teams will be given a time limit to complete an entirely edible, self-standing gingerbread house. But beware! No building is complete without obstacles. The Grinch has wrecked havoc on construction efforts with building citations and unforeseen delays. Will his antics impact your family-friendly fun? A note: all houses must be built on site during the competition. Participants will enjoy hot chocolate and cider stations, Christmas cookie decorating, pictures with Santa and more! And the Marketplace - holiday shopping. Awards will be given. Proceeds from this fun, family-friendly event will help Cowetans in need of affordable housing or critical home repairs.

Streaming Edition of
Black Phone,” combines romance with a monster mystery. The irresistible movie star pairing makes this a possible compromise for couples with different appetites for horror: a love and monster story thriller.
The Film Fix with Jonathan W. Hickman Jonathan W. Hickman is an entertainment attorney, filmmaker, college professor, and novelist. More about Jonathan can be found by visiting http://filmproductionlaw.com/ Capsule Reviews … Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/ October streaming options transform an ordinary evening at home into a visit to somewhere spooky: a haunted island, a cursed summer camp, or a house with something creepy behind the walls. This month’s choices include new versions of classic nightmares and a few seasonal discoveries. There is also room for viewers who prefer their scares with some romance or humor.
Netflix pairs a recent award-winning coastal mystery with a Gothic romance set in a crumbling mansion that is equal parts inviting and dangerous. “Below” (October 8) — Josh Hartnett plays Calvin, a Newfoundland fisherman whose community is invaded by a mysterious sea creature. When his son Wade (Charlie Heaton) begins showing alarming symptoms, Calvin joins forces with marine biologist Fonda (Mackenzie Davis). The six-part series reportedly offers an appealing combination of recognizable actors and a setting with texture. “Below” appears to be one of the month’s more intriguing new premises. “Crimson Peak” (October 1) Fix Rating 7/10 — Oscar-winning writer/director Guillermo del Toro’s 2015 “Crimson Peak” follows a young woman (Mia Wasikowska) into the ancestral home of her dashing new husband (Tom Hiddleston) and his unsettling sister (Jessica Chastain). Ghosts are part of the attraction, but the family secrets are just as important. For viewers who want Halloween atmosphere without another masked killer chasing teenagers, the elaborate costumes and decaying house offer a different kind of escape. Think Gothic romance matched with a very troubling set of in-laws.
Prime’s big horror event returns to Stephen King’s first published novel, with a filmmaker who is vested in faithfully adapting the great writer’s work. “Carrie” (October 7) — Mike Flanagan, whose credits include “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Midnight Mass,” expands King’s book (one of his shortest novels) into an eight-episode series. Summer H. Howell plays Carrie White, the isolated teenager whose emerging powers make the cruelty of her classmates especially consequential. Samantha Sloyan plays her overly religious mother, Margaret. All eight episodes hit the platform simultaneously, which means that you can binge it in one lazy weekend. Still, Brian De Palma’s 1976 adaptation of the same source material remains a formidable comparison, but the longer format that Flanagan has perfected could give Carrie’s home life and school relationships more room to develop.
Apple TV+: Apple’s Halloween selections are already available, making this a good month to catch up rather than wait for a premiere.
“Widow’s Bay” (Already streaming) – l Fix Rating 8/10 — This award-winning hit show stars Matthew Rhys as Tom Loftis, the mayor of a struggling New England island town. Tom’s big idea is to make Widow’s Bay a tourist destination. The locals believe the island is cursed, an inconvenient reputation for anyone trying to fill hotel rooms. Unfortunately, their fears have an unpleasant history. Created by Katie Dippold, the series mixes supernatural horror with comedy. Stephen Root and Kate O’Flynn co-star. Small-town boosterism meets a very difficult public-relations problem. “The Gorge” (Already streaming) – l Fix Rating 6/10 — Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy play exceptional skilled operatives assigned to guard opposite sides of a mysterious gorge. Their instructions and geography keep them apart, but naturally, a relationship develops as they watch for whatever is lurking in the gorge below. Director Scott Derrickson, whose horror credits include “Sinister” and “The
HBO Max offers two recent theatrical horror films, with an established franchise at one end and an internet-born nightmare at the other. “Evil Dead Burn” (October 2) — Director Sébastien Vaniček takes charge of the latest installment in the demonic-possession franchise. Souheila Yacoub plays a woman who seeks refuge with her late husband’s family, only to find herself facing a much worse ordeal as relatives become Deadites. Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert produce. The premise puts a particularly ugly spin on family hospitality. This is the selection for viewers who want their October horror bloody and aggressive; anyone looking for a gentle ghost story should choose elsewhere.
“Backrooms” (Already streaming) – l Fix Rating 6/10 — YouTuber Kane Parsons brings his online horror phenomenon (an adaptation of the creepy pasta meme) to a feature starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve. A strange doorway in a furniture showroom opens onto a liminal space that should not exist. The appeal is the unease of ordinary-looking rooms that no longer obey ordinary rules. Viewers who have never encountered the internet stories do not need to study them first. The basic fear is easy to grasp: you step somewhere familiar and discover that getting home may be impossible. After the initial introduction to the liminal world, “Backrooms” gets repetitive.
Hulu has a returning television horror institution and a theatrical sequel that once again turns survival into a deadly contest. “American Horror Story: 13” (New episodes through October) — Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s anthology reaches its appropriately numbered 13th installment, which began in September. FX is promoting the return of regular performers in fan-favorite roles, making this season especially important to series completists. After so many haunted houses, witches, and other elaborate horrors, the challenge is giving this reunion a reason to exist beyond mere fan service and callbacks. Catching this one on Hulu is a convenient way to follow the season through the Halloween month without keeping up with FX appointment TV. “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” (Already streaming) — Samara Weaving is back as Grace, whose bloody escape from the first film’s murderous family unfortunately lands her in a much larger game. This time around, she’s joined by her estranged sister Faith (Kathryn Newton), as four rival families are hunting them. The sequel offers a Halloween option for viewers who enjoy dark comedy alongside the bloodshed. Start with the original if you have not met Grace; the appeal of the follow-up rests partly on knowing just how much she has already survived.
Peacock returns to Camp Crystal Lake while also offering an animated choice for households that want spooky rather than gory. “Crystal Lake” (October 15) — Linda Cardellini (see “DTF: St. Louis”) plays Pamela Voorhees in this eight-episode prequel to “Friday the 13th.” Created by Brad Caleb Kane, the series explores the mother behind one of horror’s most recognizable family names. Cardellini’s casting is the strongest reason to take another trip to the summer camp. A longer story could make Pamela more than the murderous mother a famous killer, although the series will still have to satisfy viewers expecting the franchise’s violence. Along with this series, Peacock also adds the first three “Friday the 13th” films on October 1.
“Coraline” (October 1) – l Fix Rating 8/10 — Henry Selick’s stop-motion adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s story follows a girl into an alternate version of her home, where the attention she craves comes at a frightening price. The button-eyed Other Mother remains a wonderfully disturbing creation. Animation makes this a more accessible seasonal choice than the month’s adult horror releases, but parents should remember that accessible does not mean harmless. Younger or sensitive children may find its sinister household and threats of captivity quite scary.
The October Film Fix streaming watch list starts with “Carrie” and “Below,” with “Crystal Lake” close behind. For an evening without a new-series commitment, “Crimson Peak” supplies the haunted-house atmosphere, while “The Gorge” offers romance and thrills with its monsters. Families can consider “Coraline,” provided the children are ready for it. The hardest part may be deciding which nightmare to invite into your living room first.
