National Teen Driver Safety Week WAS October 18-24
Abby’s Angels has hosted this life saving week and partnered with Coweta County High Schools, the Coweta County Sheriff’s Department and Newnan Police Departments for the past several years. The focus is on building safe driving habits and opening conversations between teen peers and between parents and teen drivers. DRIVERS WHO TEXT ARE 23 TIMES
More Likely To Be Involved In A Crash
TEEN DRIVERS WHO REACH FOR THEIR PHONE Increase Their Risk of Crashing One of the 5 key factors of safe teen driving and driving in general is seat belt usage. In recent data, roughly 53% of drivers aged 15–20 who died in crashes were unrestrained. There should never be more people riding in the car than there are seat belts!
It’s never ok to drive under the influence of any substance. Thinking you’re “ok” to drive is like playing russian roulette with a 2 ton weapon. Reaction time, decision making, vision-everything is altered and impaired.

I love the Holidays. All of you who follow me know that. I got the passion from my mom. Usually there isn’t a nook or a cranny that isn’t decorated. So the season starts with fall foliage and pumpkins and of course, Halloween. Back in October of 2021, I spent the day in downtown Newnan celebrating Munchkin Madness, handing out candy to more kids (and parents) than I could count. At the time, we had an office on Jackson Street. And streams of every type of superhero, movie character, aliens and more came all morning.
Each year, Halloween just keeps exploding with new and crazier costumes and decorations. I finally finished “some” candy and looked up the day after Halloween. Remnants of Halloween were still up, but Christmas was now everywhere in the stores.
I love Christmas! I mean LOVE Christmas! Just ask Winters and all my friends. I am crazy about decorating, gift giving, gift getting, wrapping presents, decking the halls and just about every morsel of the holiday season. But most of all I love the celebration of Christ’s birth. That makes Christmas the best time of year. Back in 2016 I wrote a blog called, Can’t we just skip Thanksgiving? Frankly, once Halloween was over, I was ready to jump right to Christmas.
But you just can’t skip Thanksgiving and let it get lost in the shuffle. We can’t forget about Thanksgiving. We need Thanksgiving now more than ever.
We need Thanksgiving not just to celebrate our country’s history, but to remind us to stop and celebrate all our blessings. We can celebrate family and friends, life and the beauty all around us. We can, and should, be grateful for our blessings. To show, basically, gratitude. We need Thanksgiving to remember the things we are thankful for. It is hard to believe it is now November 2026 and I first wrote this column in 2021. There is so much upheaval in the country and division. Families and friends are divided. The politics of today have created big gas and food increases.
So this November I would like to urge each of us to celebrate each day for all our blessings. Let’s remember that we can’t ever skip Thanksgiving or any opportunity to be thankful. November is a perfect time to stir up the flames of love, hope, gratitude, faith and joy! Setting aside a holiday or an ordinary day or just a brief moment to give thanks reminds us of God’s faithfulness, His provisions and His unending love for us.
So may you celebrate all the blessings you have had and continue to have in your lives, no matter how great or small! Take a moment to give thanks!
Be blessed and encouraged abundantly this holiday season and remember that we can NEVER ever skip Thanksgiving and jump to Christmas because Thanksgiving begins to prepare the heart of the believer for the most wonderful time of year, Christmas.
Happy Thanksgiving, dear friends, from all of us at The Paper and The Shopper. We count you as a great blessing! Now may the decorating begin.

Newnan Utilities Caring Customers awards $5,000 to 3 local non-profits
Through Caring Customers, Newnan Utilities customers help local nonprofits meet needs across Coweta County. The program has awarded $5,000 in its latest round of grants to three organizations serving children and families. The Caring Customers advisory committee awarded the following grants:
Coweta CASA — $2,000 This grant will provide gas cards through CASA’s Drive to Serve program, helping volunteers travel to visit children in foster care and advocate for them in court. Coweta Ferst Readers — $1,000 This grant will help provide free, age-appropriate books to Coweta children from birth through age five, building early reading skills and helping prepare them for school. Hope Revisited — $2,000 This grant will support visits, parenting classes and mentorship for families With these awards, Caring Customers has granted nearly $170,000 to local nonprofits since the program began. Newnan Utilities customers make these grants working to reunite with their children in foster care possible by donating $1 a month or rounding up their utility bills. To learn more or enroll, visit https://newnanutilities.org/caring-customers/. and stay together. “Coweta CASA is grateful for our continued partnership with the Newnan Utilities Foundation through its Caring Customers program. Many Coweta children in foster care are placed outside our area. This grant will help ease that travel barrier and move us closer to serving every child who needs us,” said Amanda Camp-Fenlon, executive director of Coweta CASA.

Make This the Year You Quit Smoking
Why Lung Cancer Screenings Save Lives
Smoking is the single, largest, preventable cause of death and illness in the world. It’s estimated that smoking causes Known as the silent killer due to its lack of symptoms in early stages, lung cancer is the second most common type of about 480,000 deaths each year as it is a risk factor for stroke and heart disease as well as lung cancer and respiratory cancer, and statistically the most fatal. The American Cancer Society estimates a total of 226,650 newly diagnosed cases illnesses. The Great American Smokeout, which takes place on the third Thursday of every November, is a great place to in 2025, with more than half not discovering their cancer until it has advanced or is in metastatic stage, making it even begin the journey of being smoke free. Vijay Patel, M.D., a pulmonologist with Piedmont Physicians Pulmonology and more crucial that those at risk receive screening as soon as possible. Sleep Medicine Newnan, urges smokers to quit starting on Thursday, Nov. 20, if not sooner. “The most effective way to fight lung cancer is to begin treatment early on,” says Matthew Roberts, D.O., who specializes in family medicine, at Piedmont Physicians at White Oak in Newnan. “But we can’t do so if you aren’t aware you even have it. Following the guidelines, getting screened if you’re at risk—it’s all about staying on top of your health.” Who is Eligible for a Lung Cancer Screening? To qualify: “Quitting smoking will improve your lung function and circulation. You’ll likely feel a difference within a few weeks,” said Dr. Patel. “Your risk of having a heart attack is also reduced once you quit smoking and your risk of heart disease decreases as well.” Quitting smoking doesn’t just benefit you, but also everyone around you. Smoke exposure causes many serious health problems – such as heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer – in nonsmoking adults. In children, secondhand smoke can cause sudden infant death syndrome, acute respiratory infections and ear infections, and more frequent and severe asthma attacks.
• Age 50-80 • Smoking history of 20 pack years (one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years) • Current smoker or stopped in the last 15 years or less • No current pulmonary symptoms, such as worsening cough, coughing up blood, or shortness of breath • No unexplained weight loss
Research suggests that exposure to certain industrial substances such as arsenic, some organic chemicals, radon, asbestos, diesel exhaust radiation exposure, air pollution, tuberculosis and environmental tobacco smoke in nonsmokers “Smoking, and that includes the use of e-cigarettes, can cause a lot of damage,” said Dr. Patel. “It’s important to also increases a person’s risk of developing lung cancer. do all you can to either reverse that damage or stop it from progressing further.” It can be difficult to quit smoking, especially if you have been smoking for an extended period, but those who have “If you think you may be at risk, do not wait,” advises Dr. Roberts. “Talk to your primary care provider about support on their journey tend to have better success. For more information on resources to quit smoking visit https:// scheduling a low-dose CT scan.” www.piedmont.org/patients-visitors/stop-smoking. So, how does it work? The screening process itself is a straightforward CT scan---no injections or medications are involved. The screening-eligible patient will simply lie still on the table that will slide them through the doughnut-shaped scanner, taking only 20 seconds to complete. Afterward, your physician will then receive your results and follow up with you via phone call Piedmont Newnan Presents to discuss next steps.

745 Poplar Rd Newnan, GA 30265
In the event that your CT scan comes back with normal results (hooray!), our recommendation is for you to continue annual CT scans for the next two years to monitor any changes. Your nurse navigator will guide you through the entire process and remind you when it is time for your next screening or for additional tests. *Please note that 30 to 40 percent of lung cancer CT scans show abnormal results. Most of these results will be noncancerous (benign) but abnormal scans require close follow-up and further testing. Even if you do not qualify for screening, there are steps you can take to protect your lung health, including: • Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke • Limit exposure to air pollution and harmful chemicals • Stay up to date on vaccines • Practice good hand hygiene • Maintain dental health • Eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly • Get routine check-ups To schedule a visit with a primary care physician, visit piedmont.org.

The
CHEF …
The Chefs column highlights our local culinary masters. They share a recipe that has a lot of meaning to them and thankfully, how to make it. (Well at least most of it, sometimes secrets must remain that.) This month’s chef is … Roberto Orozia of A Comer Caliente Y Frio
Chef Roberto Ozoria shares his Pumpkin (Ahuyama) Flan Recipe A Comer Caliente y Frio is owned by Elizabeth and Roberto Ozoria EST 2023. After 30 years, they moved to Georgia from New Jersey with the dream of opening their own restaurant. A Comer caliente y Frio offers everything from oxtails to mofongos to flan. Amazing Caribbean flavors with a homecooked touch, you cant find anywhere else. Ingredients: • 1/2 pound of pumpkin (ahuyama)
Open Tuesday - Saturday | 10:30am - 4:00pm
For the Caramel: • 1 cup of sugar • 1/4 cup of water
Now Open
For the Flan: • 4 eggs • 1 can (14 oz) of condensed milk • 1 can (12 oz) of evaporated milk • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon • 2 sweet cloves (whole cloves) • 1 teaspoon of ground ginger (optional) • 1/4 teaspoon of salt Instructions Prepare the Caramel • Place the sugar and water in a saucepan over the stove until it turns into caramel. • Pour the caramel into your mold, spread it evenly to coat the bottom, and set it aside. Prepare the Pumpkin • Boil the pumpkin with a cinnamon stick or 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon until it softens completely. • Drain and mash it into a smooth puree, then let it cool. Blend the Flan Mixture • In a blender (on low speed), blend the eggs with the vanilla. • Add the evaporated milk, condensed milk, ground cinnamon, and the cooled pumpkin puree. Blend until smooth. Strain and Pour • Strain the mixture through a fine sieve to remove any lumps, ensuring a smooth and creamy texture. • Pour the strained mixture into the prepared mold over the hardened caramel. Bake • Prepare a water bath (baño de maría) by placing the flan mold inside a larger baking pan filled with hot water. • Bake at 200°C (392°F) for 45 minutes (or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean). Mold size: 20cm (approx. 8 inches)

Streaming Edition of
“Way of the Warrior Kid” (November 25) — Chris Pratt plays Jake, an injured Navy SEAL recuperating with his sister Sarah (Linda Cardellini) and her son Marc (Jude Hill). Marc’s difficulties at school prompt his uncle to develop a training program aimed at confidence and courage. McG (see “Charlie’s Angels” and the sequel) directs the adaptation of Jocko Willink’s novel.

HBO Max has the month’s most literal horror selection and a sitcom whose Thanksgiving gatherings offer a less lethal kind of discomfort.
November streaming brings the family together, although the people on screen do not always enjoy the experience. This month’s Thanksgiving choices range from a familiar travel disaster to a holiday dinner with a body count. New releases also leave room for football, four-legged companionship and an uncle trying to help his nephew.
Netflix gets an early start on Christmas before offering a football drama with considerably more at stake than a holiday rivalry. “A Dog’s Perfect Christmas” (November 4) — Dennis Quaid and Milo Ventimiglia lead the cast of this adaptation of W. Bruce Cameron’s novel. A teenager, her grandfather and a basset hound try to hold a struggling family together at Christmas. Cathryn Michon ( see “Muffin Top: A Love Story” and a writer on “A Dog’s Journey”) directs, with Thomas Haden Church providing the dog’s voice. For viewers drawn to animal stories, this is a new option; those wary of sentimental family dramas should know what they’re getting into. Jennifer Tilly and Mary Steenburgen add to the likeable cast. “The Mosquito Bowl” (November 25) — Peter Berg (see “Lone Survivor”) directs this World War II drama about four college football stars who join the Marines after Pearl Harbor. Their paths lead toward Okinawa and a football game played in the shadow of war. Nicholas Galitzine and Bill Skarsgård star. As is always difficult with this type of material, Berg’s challenge will be making the players matter as people before history supplies the consequences.
Prime’s November selection also follows football off the field, with a familiar name taking on one of the sport’s most recognizable personalities. “Madden” (November 18) — A beefed up Nicolas Cage plays John Madden in director David O. Russell’s account of the coach’s journey from the Oakland Raiders to his iconic status in the video game business. Christian Bale plays Raiders owner Al Davis, with Kathryn Hahn as Madden’s wife, Virginia. Cage and Bale are an intriguing pairing for a story about outsized personalities and the business surrounding a game. The risk to Cage is that with a life this well known is that audience familiarity does much of the work of the characterization. Still, the attractive casting and the presence of an edgy auteur providing a singular vision gives football fans a reason to investigate between actual games.
Apple pairs a Thanksgiving staple with a new film about family support. “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” (Already streaming; free November 14–15) — Peppermint Patty invites the gang to Charlie Brown’s house, creating a hosting problem for a boy who already has plans with his grandmother. The always helpful, if not sensible, Snoopy assembles a decidedly unconventional meal. Apple subscribers can watch now; the announced November 14–15 window also lets nonsubscribers stream it free. That free weekend
“Thanksgiving” (Currently listed on HBO Max) — Eli Roth’s 2023 slasher follows a Thanksgiving-themed killer terrorizing Plymouth, Massachusetts, a year after a fatal Black Friday riot. Nell Verlaque, Gina Gershon, Patrick Dempsey and Rick Hoffman star. The setup makes the shopping frenzy part of the holiday nightmare, with revenge replacing gratitude. Viewers who wanted Halloween to last another month have an obvious candidate here. This is an R-rated horror-comedy, so keep it out of your family-animation queue. “Friends” Thanksgiving episodes (Currently streaming) — Ready for a trip down memory lane? Start with “The One Where Ross Got High,” from season six, in which family secrets and Rachel’s disastrous trifle compete for attention at dinner. “The One With All the Thanksgivings,” from season five, builds its comedy around memories of earlier holiday catastrophes. Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and their fellow regulars make these easy selections for viewers who already know the legendary group. Either episode provides a manageable break between cooking and company, without asking anyone to begin another season-long commitment.
Hulu’s own holiday horror comes from its “Into the Dark” anthology, where an attempt to teach thankfulness becomes a very bad hosting decision. “Pilgrim” (Already streaming) — This entry from “Into the Dark’s” season 2, technically, episode 3, features a woman who invites Pilgrim reenactors to spend Thanksgiving with her family, only to discover that the visitors will not abandon their roles when the experience turns dangerous. Marcus Dunstan (see “The Collector”) directs the 2019 film, with Courtney Henggeler, Reign Edwards and Kerr Smith starring. This bloody horror adult option offers a darker companion to the family comedies available elsewhere.
Peacock’s November library additions include two Thanksgiving comedies, one perennial movie built around getting home and the other around the people who turn up once dinner begins. “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” (November 1) — You’ve no doubt seen this one before, but it is always worth revisiting around the holidays. Steve Martin plays Neal Page, whose attempt to get home to Chicago for Thanksgiving brings him into agonizingly long contact with John Candy’s affable traveling salesman, Del Griffith. John Hughes’s 1987 comedy makes missed connections and unwanted companionship feel like a personal conspiracy against a man with very little patience left. “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” is the one

of the most natural starting points for a Thanksgiving movie night. Despite its seasonal warmth, the film is rated R, 1980s style; the language is a consideration for younger viewers. “Friendsgiving” (November 1) — Malin Akerman and Kat Dennings star in writer/director Nicol Paone’s 2020 comedy about a Thanksgiving gathering that becomes increasingly crowded and chaotic. This one reminds us that choosing your company does not necessarily make getting through a holiday dinner any easier. This R-rated selection might fit adults gathering after the children have gone to bed. Pair “Friendsgiving” with the Hughes classic for an evening devoted to the failure of one’s best laid plans. The November Film Fix streaming watch list starts with “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” and “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.” For something new, “Madden” and “Way of the Warrior Kid” offer very different family-room prospects. Horror fans can consider “Thanksgiving” or “Pilgrim” once the younger guests are elsewhere. With this much trouble unfolding on screen, an ordinary argument about who brought the wrong side dish may get the proper context.

Let’s Fall Into Some Land Deals
With fall here, I thought I would write about buying and selling land in Georgia. Fall is often regarded as the best time to sell land and acreage. The temperatures are cooler, it is easier to see the entire property with the leaves falling and there are less bugs and snakes. The process of buying and selling land is completely different than a residential transaction. The list price for land and acreage is typically calculated at a price per acre. The value for the land is determined by factors such as location, topography, water features, quality of soil, timber value, road frontage, internal road systems, structures and/or improvements, uses for the land, comparable sales, etc. It is very important to have a quality survey of the property when selling or buying land. You need to know exactly what you are selling or buying. When a property’s value is calculated on a per acre basis, a small difference in acreage can make a huge impact on a sales price. If a survey is not provided, you can ask the seller to provide one or have someone complete a survey for you. Newnan and Coweta County have a great group of local surveyors. I would not recommend buying or selling a property without a survey as there can be disputes about boundaries and encroachments from adjacent properties. Sellers often will cut the timber off a property before selling it to cash in on the value of the timber. I would not recommend this as cutting the timber leaves the land looking barren and rough. You want to dress up acreage, like you would a house or car before selling it. This can be as simple as bush hogging a field or as complicated as adding a pond to make the property more desirable. Thinning is a good idea to help a land tract show better. Thinning is the calculated removal of certain trees with a specific objective in mind (gfc.state.ga.us). This process is beneficial to the overall health of trees on the property also. For example, thinning an area of dead or diseased trees will allow a property to show better. The Georgia Forestry Commission is a great resource for questions about timber. If you plan to build a home or structure on some land, I would highly recommend having a soil or “perc test” completed during a due diligence period. Percolation tests measure the water absorption rate of soil. This will help to determine if you can put a septic tank and drain field on the property. The Coweta County Health Department can provide perc tests, as well as local soil scientists. It is not a bad idea to have a soil test, along with a topographic report, completed before you list a property so the prospective buyers know where they can build a home. A topographic report is a detailed map of the surface features of the land. This includes mountains, hills, creeks, valleys, etc. on a particular property.
