Piedmont Newnan Hospital broke ground on the first phase of its $65 million South Tower expansion project on Wednesday (Oct. 19), which includes adding 80,000 square feet and 50 new patient beds.

The first phase will consist of three levels that will connect to the hospital, with the structure designed to support five future additional floors.

Hospital staff and community members gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction.

“This groundbreaking is a huge milestone for our hospital and we’re very excited to be providing greater access to Piedmont’s high-quality services to our community,” said Piedmont Newnan Chief Operating Officer (COO) Vicki Kaiser. “We appreciate everyone who joined us to celebrate as we welcome this much needed expansion to our hospital’s campus.”

Piedmont Newnan has consistently been recognized for quality and safety and has the most Leapfrog A hospital safety grades in the state of Georgia. As a top destination for care in south Atlanta, this project is necessary to keep up with Coweta County’s fast-paced growth and to continue to provide high-quality, patient-centered care close to home for the county’s residents, especially after the increase in volumes since the opening of the new interchange at Interstate 85 and Poplar Road in 2019.

During the 10 years from 2012 to the present, Coweta County is Georgia’s 18th largest county with an estimated population of 156,042, has grown by 21.97%, according to the US Census.

In 2012, Piedmont Newnan expanded to better meet the needs of county residents, opening a state-ofthe-art 362,000 square-foot, 136-bed hospital. The growth of the hospital has correlated with the County’s growth, with inpatient admissions growing 61%, outpatient encounters growing 62%, Emergency Department visits growing 14%, surgeries growing 85%, and newborn deliveries growing 71%, since 2012. The hospital currently employees over 1,200 staff and more than 600 physicians.

The hospital has previously expanded the current facility, growing from a 136-bed to a 167-bed facility, but remains full. The South Tower project, which will add 50 additional beds, includes the intent to continue to build additional floors in future phases, and is the most significant investment Piedmont has made in Coweta County since building this new hospital on Poplar Road almost 10 years ago. Since opening the new hospital on Poplar Road, Piedmont has invested almost $300 million in capital here at Newnan.

“The new tower expansion will be designed in line with the original campus which creates an atmosphere that supports and promotes healing, with a strong patient/staff orientation to nature and focus to the landscape,” said Jack Tillman, Chief Real Estate and Corporate Development Officer at Piedmont Healthcare. “The new addition will continue to prioritize natural light and will be built with the same warm materials such as the stacked stone, brick and large windows that are used on the existing hospital base.”

Plus, I’ve gotten three “pay up or else” emails so far concerning two of my old personal blogs.

Devin Malm, whom I am guessing is British because he has a uk.com email, wants $2,500 in bitcoin. Chandra Cross, not sure where she is from, wants $3,000 in bitcoin and Tiffany Lindt, again not sure, wants $3,000 in bitcoin as well.

Interestingly, the women want more. (nails, hair, throw pillows?). More interesting, the wording from all three blackmailing hackers are pretty much verbatim.

In the newspaper business, hard news stories need to have a powerful lede (yes, that is spelled correctly). The lede is your first sentence. It needs to get the reader’s attention.

Their lede was “Your Site Has Been Hacked.”

So yeah, that got my attention. Kudos to whomever taught them journalism.

That is followed by “PLEASE FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO SOMEONE IN YOUR COMPANY WHO IS ALLOWED TO MAKE IMPORTANT DECISIONS!” So at least they are polite. But that depends if the ALL CAPS was shouting or just making sure I knew what to do next.

So apparently they found a vulnerability they were able to exploit, then gained access to my database credentials and extracted said entire database to an offshore server.

Their words, not mine, because I don’t know anything about database credentials.

Then they got nasty. “We will systematically go through a series of steps of totally damaging your reputation.”

They will sell my database to the “highest bidder which they will use with whatever their intentions are.” I had to reread that a couple of times. Visions of Doctor Evil popped into my mind, as well as becoming pretty sure these folks weren’t American or British like Devin claimed.

I’m beginning to think this is the new Nigerian scam but with Russians computer hackers.

And if all that wasn’t enough, they are going to sell my emails (don’t have any on those blogs, but let’s keep that between us), which will “thusly damaging your reputation and having angry customers/associates with whatever angry customers/associates do.” Again, their words/spelling, not mine.

Fortunately, they answered my burning question with - “How do I stop this?”

They think of everything, don’t they? Basically, follow the steps as outlined and they will refrain from destroying my site’s reputation.

They ended with what I guess is the general hacker threat. Don’t reply to the email. This was not a hoax and they will not negotiate. If I don’t pay up they will start the aforementioned destruction in however many days it was.

The light at the end of the tunnel?

“Once you have paid we will stop what we were doing and you will never hear from us again!”

So I guess this will continue, cause I’m just not paying. And to be truthful, I can’t figure out their instructions anyway.

You get the point. Great Chef favorites, some awesome looking seafood creations and the steak tacos were to die for.

Personally, I was never a big fan of rice and beans. I now take that back. Great rice and beans are now the key indicator to me that everything else will be good. It’s like going to a sandwich place and trying out their cheesesteak. If that ain’t good, move on.

Just for You

Is there a store that you always feel has something just for you? Is it brick and mortar or online? Is the store general or specific in its inventory and do they have old standards or cutting-edge products or both?

Well, I have one, or several to be truthful, and I must shop smart or my debit card becomes quite uncooperative! I do have a favorite place that has what I want, either online or brick/mortar, and it features oldies and all the newest. And it is free. I bet you know where I am going with this now…. yes, right to one of the four Coweta County libraries!

Maybe I have made my case so let’s go back to the store you love because it has something just for you. Everyone has interests, right? If you do not like mysteries or romances or westerns because they are “made up,” we have this thing called a Dewey Decimal system that puts books in order by subject order or interests. I have news for you too … fiction titles today can teach you a whole lot of non-fiction knowledge. These authors do the research!

Surely, with hundreds of thousands of titles, there is something to hook a person’s interest or tickle their curiosity. And we have it in the tried and true book form and we have it in the electronic form.

The world is wacky wired today. This has increased my reading time pleasure; I can relax, lose myself in another world or place, and not give a flip about the news or social media. That, my friends, is worth its weight in gold to me.

It is not bragging if it is true. I like to think that given the chance we (library staff) can make about anyone a happy customer if they give us a chance. If you are a reader, I know that we got you, but I love to try and sell non-readers on what we have to offer. There are numerous reasons to rearrange your daily routine if reading is not a part of it. Many, many studies show that people who read are less stressed, happier, do better in school, and make more money. Once again, I am not making this up … it is not bragging.

I love preaching to the choir but if you know someone who does not read or is that person that says I do not read and I am happy about it, please let me try and put a book in their hand. The world is so full of information and the internet is so full of opinions; it behooves all of us to have our mind as fit as our bodies.

Do not make me break out the dementia studies that show reading can put off diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Who really wants to spend the relaxed, retired days of their life battling such a terrible disease when there is something that can possibly help prevent it???

Clothes Less Traveled opens its 2023 Grant Process

Clothes Less Traveled, a nonprofit thrift store in Peachtree City, is preparing to open their two-step annual grant process.

Since their founding in 1997, Clothes Less Traveled has been committed to reinvesting profits into the local community, awarding over $7.5 million dollars to more than 100 charities.

These grants support a wide range of local causes including healthcare, food insecurity, animal protection, special education, foster care, conservation and more.

“We look forward to empowering change in our community by continuing to work with our local non-profit partners in many ways,” said Frank Newland, 2023 Clothes Less Traveled Grant Committee Chair. “Returning our profits into our community is a core value at CLT and we have proudly done so for many years. We continue to

November, the month of Veterans Day, the end of Daylight Savings Time and Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I want to give Christy’s Cafe a shout-out and a huge hug for all those amazing free Thanksgiving dinners that she provided for so many years.

Since I have reached old age, I limit my shopping a great deal. If I cannot wear it, eat it or read it, I don’t need it.

I suggest that those who have family and friends visiting Newnan be sure to bring them to the Courthouse Square, the best kept secret in all of Georgia. Be sure to give them a tour of the Carnegie Library and the amazing library staff. They are so knowledgeable and friendly, and very professional. I hang out there most often, and get your friends to pick up a Mr. Personality bookmark there as well.

This year I started the practice of staying home all day two days out of the week. I want to spend more time with my inner self, unplugged from the world of information overload. This is also an excellent opportunity to count my blessings and communicate with the Divine Spirit.

As I shared in my column before, Divine Spirit places books of wisdom in my path and I talk about them in my Book of the Month part of my column. I have been praying for more knowledge on how to pray and I received this book titled “Praying Like Jesus, The Lord’s Prayer In A Culture Of Prosperity” by James Mulholland.

This is indeed a handbook on how to pray like Jesus. I am keeping this book on my bedside table and reading and re-reading it many times.

When his disciples asked Jesus how to pray, he said that when you pray, remember to whom you are speaking to. This short but powerfully written book has much to say on how not to pray as well.

I have often felt when people would pray out loud that the message was intended more for me than for God. I have often preferred praying in secret or when only God and I are around.

This book has reminded me to say thank you God more often and to ask for others’ needs more than for myself. I have been truly blessed every day for the past 10 years, beyond words to express.

I am well aware that I am to share my many blessings in some form in every opportunity I have with all walks of life and all of humankind.

I urge you to check out the contents of this amazing book for yourself.

The percentage of Coweta County School System high school students graduating on-time rose to 90.5 percent for the class of 2022. That reflects an increase of 1.2 percent in Coweta’s four-year graduation rate over that of 2021, according to a graduation report released by the Georgia Department of Education. Coweta County’s four-year graduation rate was more than 6 percent higher than the state of Georgia’s 2022 rate, which also increased from 2021 to 2022. Individually, East Coweta High School posted a 2022 fouryear graduation rate of 91.7 percent, Newnan High a rate of 87.7 percent, and Northgate had a rate of 90.6 percent. [ [ [

Interstate NationaLease is helping increase program growth and training opportunities for students of West Georgia Technical College’s Diesel Equipment Technology Program with the donation of a 2016 Kenworth T3000 truck to help grow the program.

The Coweta County School System’s average SAT score for the graduating class of 2022 was 1070, placing participating Coweta students well above state and national averages on the college entrance exam. Annual T-Shirts for Turkeys event set for Nov. 7-10

From Staff Reports The Joy FM and 1st Franklin Financial are teaming up again this year to help local families in need as the annual T-Shirts for Turkeys event returns.

This four-day happening begins Monday, November 7 and runs through Thursday, November 10. Both The Joy FM and 1st Franklin Financial needs the public’s help in stocking the freezers of the many area food banks and ministries who feed the local, hurting families.

People are asked to donate frozen turkeys at designated Chick-fil-A drop-off points. When folks donate a turkey, they will receive a newly designed Joy FM T-shirt. $10 gift cards from any local grocery store and cash are also accepted.

Those turkeys, which are dropped off, go immediately to the freezers of the food banks and homeless shelters. From there, those turkeys will be turned into food boxes, holiday meal plates and the warmth of hope and God’s love for the unfortunate in this community, many of whom are children.

Briefly describe yourself and what you do.

Years ago I came up with an idea for a new way to make calendars: Why not draw a year? So with pen in hand, and having no idea what I was doing, I drew my first calendar. It was a planetoid floating in space, with the dates carved into its surface. This was about the time I started using the pen name Pilliard Dickle. (My real name is Joe Chandler.) Since then I’ve turned that seedling of an idea into a whole world of time called The Land of Calendaria. I also write books. And then there’s my 1 1/2 Man Show, featuring the present me performing whimsical original songs with the past me (which I recorded at my kitchen table, using a spoon and coffee cup for percussion). So what do I do? Good question. The common thread that runs through all my projects is that, to bear the Pilliard Dickle brand, they must have an element of uniqueness, or, better yet, of never having been done before. That’s why I dub myself, for lack of a better term, an “Imaginationist.”

the senses that can cause people to, for example, smell colors or see music. In my case, I see time. That is, I picture the shapes and colors of days, weeks and months. If you say “I’ll see you next Tuesday,” I picture not when Tuesday is, but where Tuesday is, in relation to the shape of the week. (BTW, Tuesdays are red.) This might have been an influence on my having started drawing calendars.

You are hosting a dinner party for six. What five people, living or dead, would you invite and why?

Xyla Danielle, an amazing vocalist/songwriter. She was my musical partner when I lived on St. Simons Island. If they let me sing a few of my songs (and they would, because it’s my dinner party), I’d sound so much better with her backing me up.

Best piece of advice you’ve received.

When you’re first starting out, put all your available cash in matching socks and food storage containers with matching lids.

But nooo, I squandered it on girls and such, buying a few socks and containers here and there, and now … nothing matches!

If I had it to do over …

I would not be so timid. Of living life, taking chances. My favorite lyric is from a song called The Art of Happiness by my friend Xan. “Leave your umbrella inside, let the rain fill your eyes. For far too long life’s kept them dry. Open wide!” That.

You are going on an extended solo trip. What three albums and three books would you take?

How about an album by Philip Glass…but one that’s actually listenable. Maybe Koyaanisqatsi. And something by Beethoven or one of those guys. And — I hate to be so predictable — Revolver. No wait — The White Album.

As for books: Miriam-Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary … because it has all the words! OK, seriously, how about The Discoverers: A History of Man’s Search to Know His World and Himself by Daniel Boorstin (the former National Librarian). And Before the Big Bang by Laura Mersini-Houghton, a cosmologist at UNC whom I definitely do not have a debilitating celebrity crush on. And lastly, one I’ve been writing since shortly after they invented fire called O Say Can You See (Your Nose)? Because maybe I’d finally finish the dang thing!

Tell us one thing about yourself that few people know.

I have a perceptual anomaly called synesthesia. It’s a cross-wiring of

My mother, so I could tell her I’ve come to realize that anything I like about myself, the good stuff I do, my determination to bring something positive to the world, came from her.

OK, I better come up with some famous folks. How about one living and one dead?

The living one: Ringo. I saw an interview where he was telling the story of being at George Harrison’s bedside in George’s final days and said he was going to have to go to New York to see his daughter (who was also ill). George said “You want me to come with you?” At that point in the interview, Ringo had to run a finger under his big sunglasses to wipe a tear. Then he looked around the room and said “It’s like a ****ing Barbara Walter’s special in here.” That’s the exact frame when Ringo became my favorite Beatle. (Plus, between entries, I’d hit him up for a coupla mil—he’d never miss it.)

The dead one: How about Nikola Tesla? (Note: He’d come back to life before the party — then he could go back to being dead again.)

Name an as yet unfulfilled dream.

To land an interview in The Pap … oh, wait.

Off and on over the years I’ve worked on a book called A Novel Without Words. As the name implies, it’s all told in pictures. The characters speak in colors. It’s never been quite finished—but it’s about to be. I have it in my sights and I shall publish that book in 2023 or my name’s not Pilliard Dickle.

Your go-to food.

Not sure what “go-to” means. If it means go-to every day as a staple, it’s a whole bunch of vegetables, fruits, nuts and a bunch of other healthy stuff thrown into various salad-esqe concoctions.

If it means go-to when you need comfort food, let’s do chickenandouille gumbo with roasted potatoes and a side of bruschetta.

Favorite movies(s).

The Truman Show. At the end [SPOILER] when the mast of that boat pierced that wall and he walked up those invisible steps to that door in the sky and Christof started speaking to him from the moon, my daughter Emily and my wife Natalie (wife at the time, that is, and we’re still great friends) both turned to me and said “Did you like it?” But I, the perpetually verbose Pilliard Dickle, could not speak, literally. I finally got some words out in the parking lot.

Dogs or cats?

I had an orange part-time cat-at-large for a while, but he quit coming round. I do have a grand-dog—a Pomeranian named Belle Chanel, who seems to be a minor celebrity around downtown Newnan. Or, wait, did you mean to pick one? Ha, I’m not falling into that trap—I’d alienate half the readers!

Your favorite quote and why.

I try to live my life based on sayings I see on t-shirts, bumper stickers and tote bags. One that comes to mind is from Wayne Gretzky: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” But that was recently superseded by my granddaughter Olivia, who was dictating her Christmas list onto my phone. One of the gifts was “Lots of hugs from Pop Pop.” And she was not even vying for ice cream!

Name something that you are extremely glad you did or accomplished.

During the pandemic I wrote a novel about an ant.

If you weren’t doing what you are, you would be …

A movie critic. I mean, you watch movies then tell people what you think about ‘em. What kind of a “job” is that? You should pay them to let you do it. I think Gene Shalit might agree. (He used to review my calendars on the Today show, BTW.) (Are shameless plugs permitted?)

What advice would you give your younger self just starting out on their own?

Buying, Selling Land in Georgia With fall here, I thought I would write about buying and selling land in Georgia. Fall is often regarded as the best time to sell land and acreage.

The temperatures are cooler, it is easier to see the entire property with the leaves falling and there are less bugs and snakes.

The process of buying and selling land is completely different than a residential transaction. The list price for land and acreage is typically calculated at a price per acre. The value for the land is determined by factors such as location, topography, water features, quality of soil, timber value, road frontage, internal road systems, structures and/or improvements, uses for the land, comparable sales, etc. It is very important to have a quality survey of the property when selling or buying land. You need to know exactly what you are selling or buying.

When a property’s value is calculated on a per acre basis, a small difference in acreage can make a huge impact on a sales price. If a survey is not provided, you can ask the seller to provide one or have someone complete a survey for you. Newnan and Coweta County have a great group of local surveyors. I would not recommend buying or selling a property without a survey as there can be disputes about boundaries and encroachments from adjacent properties.

Sellers often will cut the timber off a property before selling it to cash in on the value of the timber. I would not recommend this as cutting the timber leaves the land looking barren and rough. You want to dress up acreage, like you would a house or car before selling it. This can be as simple as bush hogging a field or as complicated as adding a pond to make the property more desirable.

Thinning is a good idea to help a land tract show better. Thinning is the calculated removal of certain trees with a specific objective in mind (gfc.state.ga.us). This process is beneficial to the overall health of trees on the property also. For example, thinning an area of dead or diseased trees will allow a property to show better. The Georgia Forestry Commission is a great resource for questions about timber.

If you plan to build a home or structure on some land, I would highly recommend having a soil or “perc test” completed during a due diligence period. Percolation tests measure the water absorption rate of soil. This will help to determine if you can put a septic tank and drain field on the property. The Coweta County Health Department can provide perc tests, as well as local soil scientists. It is not a bad idea to have a soil test, along with a topographic report, completed before you list a property so the prospective buyers know where they can build a home. A topographic report is a detailed map of the surface features of the land. This includes mountains, hills, creeks, valleys, etc. on a particular property.

I hope you are able to enjoy being outside this fall. Walking and showing land is one of my favorite parts of my job!

Ticket to Paradise (now playing) – l NO Fix Rating 5/10-“Ticket to Paradise” is the blandest comedy to be widely released in years. Aside from a blurted-out F$#$ bomb, some innocuous drinking, and veiled mention of sexuality, the movie barely qualifies for its PG-13 rating.

George Clooney and Julia Roberts are charming as ever, but their chemistry only carries the film so far. And because the narrative is overly twee and sentimental, the insincerity of the entire project shines through. The movie needed to be meaner and edgier to generate the required tension to make us care about the character’s plight.

Black Adam (now playing) – l Fix Rating 6/10 -Comparisons to MCU projects complicate the success of “Black Adam.” It’s hard to shake the feeling that this film feels like an imitator. If there is a difference, it’s the renewed commitment to the Zack Snyder visual style that features high-contrast images and the abundance of slo-mo.

“Black Adam” is a palatable event film. Still, if the DC cinematic universe is to compete in the crowded superhero marketplace, it will need to give us something unique that engages visually and emotionally. And that will inevitably be another outing for the Man of Steel.

The Banshees of Inisherin (now playing) – l Fix Rating 9/10 Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson make a fantastic team.

And this time around, writer/director Martin McDonagh (see “In Bruges”) isolates them on an Irish island, where they play lifelong besties, whiling away their days with a good pint in hand. But one afternoon, the elder and more sophisticated Colm (Gleeson) tells Pádraic (Farrell) that he doesn’t want to be friends with him anymore. This nuanced tale of aging and friendship makes “The Banshees of Inisherin” one of the year’s most sincere and meaningful films.

The narrative has the adult Ralphie returning to the old house on Cleveland Street to give his children a Christmas as memorable as those he had as a child. Along the way, he will reconnect with his past and confront his father’s death.

Falling for Christmas (November 10) – Remember Lindsay Lohan? Even though she’s been working steadily over the last few years, her off-screen struggles effectively pulled her from many higher-profile opportunities at the peak of her career. With “Falling for Christmas,” the 36-year-old “Mean Girls” star falls into the irresistibly cheesy Netflix holiday movie rotation playing a newly engaged heiress who gets amnesia after a skiing accident. When no one looks for her, she is naturally befriended by a handsome, single (of course) man and his daughter. Amorous sparks fly in this familiar looking (but how can you not watch) festive rom-com.

The Crown (Season 5 – November 9) – In the shadow of Queen Elizabeth’s passing, season 5 of the award-winning series that traces her historic reign marches forward. This season examines the rocky relationship of Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and Prince Charles (Dominic West). Queen Elizabeth II is played by Imelda Staunton (“Harry Potter’s” Dolores Umbridge and Oscar-nominated for 2004’s Vera Drake).

Wednesday (November 23) – It’s impossible not to get a little excited about Tim Burton directing all eight episodes of this “The Addams Family” spin-off focusing on the precocious Wednesday (Jenna Ortega). And the casting looks fantastic, with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán playing Morticia and Gomez. Even Christina Ricci, who once played Wednesday in the 1990s adaptations of the long-running television series, gets in on the fun in this edgy-looking update.

Streaming Selects: A Christmas Story Christmas (November 17) – By bringing back Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) and other original surviving cast

Willow (season 1, November 30) – I’ve seen three episodes of this handsome series continuation of the 1988 Ron Howard film. It picks up years after the events of the movie. Warwick Davis returns

as the title wizard, who must go on another quest that will test his magic ability. Joanne Whalley returns as Sorsha and is joined by new faces Erin Kellyman, Ellie Bamber, Ruby Cruz, and Spider-Man star Tony Revolori. Of the new cast, I’m most impressed by Amar Chadha-Patel, playing a brutish protector ordered to accompany Willow and the others as they try to save their world.

Welcome to Chippendales (November 22) – Series creator Robert Siegel (see Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy”) tackles the origin story of Somen “Steve” Banerjee (Kumail Nanjani), the Indian American businessman who formed the all-male stripper troupe known as the Chippendales. The trailers look like sexy fun mixed with some edgy, crushing reality. Comedian Nanjani continues to turn in solid performances in serious projects as his acting star continues to rise.

My Policeman (November 4) Fix Rating 6/10 – In “My Policeman,” pop superstar Harry Styles plays a humble officer named Tom, who engages in a torrid, clandestine affair with museum curator Patrick (David Dawson) in 1950s England. But while their relationship is adventurous and erotic, the depth of their attachment is more than physical. And in that time and that place, it was a criminal act.

While the film provides a prestige project for Styles to showcase his acting chops, it can’t distinguish itself from other productions that grapple with that dark time in British history.

Theatrical Teasers: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (November 11) – Early word on this sequel to the ground-breaking “Black Panther” call it “epic” and “exhilarating,” while it also searches desperately for the right tone to handle the loss of star Chadwick Boseman. The story focuses on how Wakanda can maintain its sovereignty following the loss of its king T’Challa (played in the 2018 film by Boseman). Director Ryan Coogler returns along with many of the original cast members. The nagging question on everyone’s lips is: who will be the next Panther?

Arthouse Corner:

The Fabelmans (November 23) – Winner of the People’s Choice Award at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, “The Fabelmans” might be Steven Spielberg’s most personal film. The semi-autobiographical story concentrates on the title family as the young Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle) copes with problems at home by leaning on his love of movies. Michelle Williams plays the mother who inspires Sammy to pursue his dreams, while his father (played by Paul Dano) focuses on more concrete realities. “The Fabelmans” is already touted as the front-runner for many awards, including the best film of the year.n _______________________________
