A Special Interview with Melody Kiser

Musician/Owner of HeyDreamer Music Group, LLC.

1. Tell us a little about your musical background. I grew up in a musical family, so I’ve been a musician for most of my life. I’m the lead singer and guitarist for my band, HeyDreamer, and music has really shaped almost every part of who I am. I have a Master’s degree in Music Business from Berklee College of Music, and I’ve spent years performing, writing, booking shows, producing events, and working with other artists.

My band is currently working with Will Turpin of Collective Soul and Brian Collins through Real People Music, and we’ve been recording our new concept album at Real 2 Reel Studios. So, I come at Porchfest from both sides: as an artist who knows how hard musicians work, and as an organizer who wants to create meaningful opportunities for them to be heard.

2. How did the whole idea of Porchfest come about?

I’ve played larger music events for years. I’ve performed on music cruises with artists like Melissa Etheridge and Nancy Wilson of Heart, and I’ve toured around the U.S. and played with artists from bands like Journey, Santana, Boston, and others, so I’m familiar with how successful music festivals are run and what makes an event feel good for both the audience and the musicians.

HeyDreamer, my band, played at the Virginia Highlands Porchfest in Atlanta, and while it was a great experience, it was also a really difficult day logistically for the musicians. That got me thinking about what a Porchfest could look like if it was designed with the artists’ experience in mind from the very beginning.

So, I called Kris Youmans and Steve Quick and asked if they’d want to be part of creating an event that felt tailored to the local musicians here in Newnan. We’re known as “The City of Homes,” so the idea of turning front porches into stages felt natural. It gave us a way to celebrate Newnan’s historic neighborhoods, local music, local artists, small businesses, and the community spirit that already exists here.

I wanted to create something accessible and joyful, where families could walk from porch to porch, hear completely different styles of music, discover

local artists, and experience Newnan in a way that feels personal and unique. Porchfest felt like the perfect way to bring all of that together.

3. Everyone thought Porchfest 2025 was a big success. What were the positives you took away from that inaugural event?

The biggest positive was seeing how much the community embraced it. We hoped people would come, but the response was honestly beyond anything we expected. Thousands of people showed up, and what stood out most to me was how happy everyone seemed to be. People were walking, dancing, sitting in front yards, supporting local vendors, discovering new bands, and just enjoying being together.

I also loved seeing the impact on the artists and small businesses. Musicians were gaining new fans, vendors were making sales, and several downtown businesses had incredible days. It proved that an event like this can be fun and meaningful, but also have a real economic and cultural impact.

And honestly, one of my favorite takeaways was how peaceful and positive the whole day felt. For an event that large, especially in its first year, it was amazing to see people show up with such respect for the neighborhood, the homeowners, and each other.

4. Reviewing Porchfest 2025, what didn’t quite work the way you hoped?

The biggest challenge was that we were prepared for a much smaller crowd than we actually got. We were hoping for around 3,500 people, and we ended up with more than 10,000. That is a wonderful problem to have, but it definitely showed us where we needed to improve.

The map was one of the biggest pieces of feedback. People loved the event, but the single-page map was a little hard to navigate once they were actually out walking around. We also learned that we needed more signage, more facilities, more security, and better crowd flow.

So, nothing “failed” exactly, but 2025 taught us a lot. It showed us that if this event was going to grow, the infrastructure had to grow with it.

5. Biggest changes from 2025 to this year?

This year, we’ve made major improvements to the event infrastructure. We’re adding more security, more facilities, better signage, and a much more userfriendly map booklet instead of a single-page map. We’re also working to spread the crowd out more thoughtfully so that people can move through the festival more comfortably.

We also have more participating homes, more music, more vendors, and more community partners. Another big change is that we’ve added even more to our VIP experience, hosted by the Newnan-Coweta History Center! The VIP experience now includes complimentary beer and wine at the museum, character-actor guided historic garden tours, specialty Historic Garden cocktail stops, and more! That gives people a really special way to experience Porchfest while also supporting the organization the event benefits.

Overall, the goal is to keep the charm and magic of the first year, but make the logistics stronger and smoother for everyone.

6. How many bands?

We had an incredible response from musicians this year. We received more than 150 applications, which is amazing and also really difficult because we

Newnan Porchfest is hosting over 80 bands and acts this year!

This year’s lineup includes dozens of bands and artists across porches, downtown partner locations, and special performances throughout the day. The exciting part is the variety. You’ll hear rock, country, folk, jazz, blues, singersongwriters, alternative music, student bands, and more. There really is something for everybody.

7. How many volunteers and what all do they do?

It takes a lot of people to make an event like this happen! Volunteers help with everything from check-in and information booths to helping vendors, supporting musicians, assisting with the kids’ area, passing out maps and signage, answering questions, selling t-shirts and posters, and helping people find their way around the festival.

They are really the heartbeat of the event day. A lot of what makes Porchfest feel welcoming comes from having friendly people throughout the festival who are willing to help. We could not do this without them.

If anyone’s interested in signing up to volunteer on May 30, head over to our website at www. newnanporchfest.com and fill out our volunteer application. Shifts are 2-hours long, so you can still enjoy the festival while helping the cause!

8. Proceeds from the event go where?

Proceeds benefit the Newnan-Coweta History Center. That partnership is really important to me because Porchfest is not just about music. It’s also about Newnan, our history, and our community.

We’re bringing people into one of Newnan’s historic neighborhoods and inviting them to experience these beautiful homes, streets, and stories in a new way. Supporting the History Center helps preserve and share the history that makes Newnan so special.

9. Anything you want to add?

I just want to say how grateful I am. Porchfest only works because people believe in it. Homeowners say yes to turning their porches into stages. Musicians say yes to sharing their art and donating their time and talents. Volunteers, sponsors, vendors, city staff, local businesses, and community members all come together to make it happen.

That is what makes this event special. It is not just a music festival. It is a love letter to Newnan. It’s a celebration of creativity, history, and community, and I feel really lucky to be able to bring this to our community. 

Real Estate

First Quarter Real Estate Recap

The first quarter (Q1) of 2026 was up and down for Coweta County real estate. The number of closings increased from Q1 2025 to Q1 2026. New listings were slightly up in January and March but significantly down 17% in February from the previous year.

The median sales price was $395,000 for Coweta County in the first quarter of 2026. The average sales price was $453,318. Those numbers were down from 2025. The median price was $409,999 and average price was $465,037 in Q1 last year. The average days on market, or the time it takes for a house listed for sale to go under contract increased. For the first quarter of 2026 the average days on market for Coweta County was 65. The average days on market for the first quarter of 2025 was 59. There was a 4.1 months supply of listings available for the first quarter of 2026, which is considered healthy to slightly favoring the seller. In other words, it would take 4.1 months to sell all the existing listing inventory at the current sales pace. The months supply was down from 4.9 in first quarter of last year.

That’s the data. Working in this market every day, the market felt inconsistent. We would be very busy for a couple weeks then slow the next two weeks. Mortgage rates dipped into the high 5’s percent in January. This increased the buying power for prospective buyers and seemed to increase activity. The rates quickly rose back into the 6’s percent however. Along with mortgage rates, the war in Iran, rising fuel costs, and

inflation all seem to be having negative effects on the housing market. Despite all of this, our office was part of some large land, multifamily and development real estate transactions in early 2026. So, larger deals are still being completed even if the residential single family home market is sluggish.

I would consider the real estate market to be in a relatively fair or even situation as it relates to sellers and buyers. It is not a bad time to purchase as sellers are coming off their list prices and conceding on the closing costs, repairs and credits. Builders, especially, are offering significant incentives for buyers including closing cost credits and allowances. If you are selling, the buyer demand is still strong. In the first quarter of this year, sellers were receiving 98.1% of their asking price.

Piedmont Newnan Hospital Stresses the Importance of Knowing Signs of Stroke

On average, someone in the United States dies from a stroke every 3 minutes and 11 seconds, according to the American Heart Association. All told, strokes are responsible for one in every 20 deaths.

Strokes occur when the blood supply to the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. Because up to 80 percent of strokes are preventable, Piedmont Newnan reminds the community that prevention and quick action saves lives. Many of the most common stroke risk factors are within our control.

Spring Series

“Keeping a check on the risk factors we can control is key,” said Maria Wills, stroke manager at Piedmont Newnan. “Hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes and smoking are four major contributors to stroke risk, but they’re also things we can do something about. Small lifestyle changes, diet, exercise, and knowing your numbers (Blood Pressure, Lipid Panel, A1C) and regular checkups can all have a big impact.”

Additionally, knowing the signs of a stroke and taking immediate action can often lead to better recovery outcomes. In general, rapid recognition and response are key to decreasing the chances of long-term disability. To help identify signs of a stroke, use the acronym B.E.F.A.S.T.:

About Dr. El-Deiry

Dr. El-Deiry has been practicing medicine for over 20 years and is one of the most experienced head and neck cancer surgeons in the country. Prior to joining Piedmont, Dr. El-Deiry was the Program Lead for the Head and Neck Tumor Program at Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University where he developed a unique multidisciplinary model of care for head and neck cancer, including the design of the new cancer tower in Midtown, as well as helping that program achieve national prominence.

Wolfe said every minute matters when it comes to seeking medical care. Two million brains cells die every minute during a stroke, so time is brain tissue.

“Once your symptoms start, the clock starts running. The faster you receive care, the better your chance of recovery. The biggest mistake we see is that people think their symptoms will just go away on their own and in doing that, they end up outside of the treatment window. So, if you have symptoms, don’t hesitate. Call 911 immediately!”

Dr. El-Deiry specializes in treating both benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck. His special interests include microvascular reconstruction of complex head and neck defects, post radiation complications in the head and neck as well as treating rare tumors of the head and neck including salivary tumors and vascular tumors.

Streaming Edition of The Film Fix with Jonathan W. Hickman

Jonathan W. Hickman is an entertainment attorney, filmmaker, college professor, and novelist. More about Jonathan can be found by visiting http://filmproductionlaw.com/

Capsule Reviews … Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/

If April felt like a content dump, the month of May plays more like a reshuffle. There’s no single streaming title that’s a must see, no obvious cultural center pulling everything toward it. Instead, there’s a scattering of platform offerings— prestige here, franchise maintenance there, and a whole lot of “more of the same” in between.

Netflix continues to operate on quantity sometimes also delivering quality, but even within their sprawl, a couple of titles stand out.

Lord of the Flies (May 12) — This one arrives as yet another adaptation of William Golding’s classic work of literature, this time migrating from the BBC. The material is durable, but familiarity cuts both ways. We know where it’s going. The only question is whether this handsome looking series finds a new angle into the psychology of collapse or simply retraces the same bleak path.

The Boroughs (May 21) — Produced by the Duffer Brothers, “The Boroughs” could be the month’s more intriguing option in the streamer’s sizable library. The premise—a supernatural story unfolding within a retirement community—suggests a tonal pivot away from the adolescent nostalgia that powered by the Duffer’s blockbuster “Stranger Things.” There’s potential here for something more reflective, even melancholy, couple with entertaining fantasy elements. Or it could just be the same formula with older faces. Here’s hoping that this doesn’t feel entirely recycled.

Apple continues to act less like a streamer and more like a boutique studio, with fewer releases, but each positioned as an event.

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed (May 20) — Actress Tatiana Maslany (see “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” and “Orphan Black”) gets a showcase playing a suburban mother pulled into a blackmail scheme through a cam-boy connection. It’s a premise that could tilt toward satire or suspense, and Maslany’s ability to navigate tonal shifts should make this one worth watching.

Star City (May 29) — This is a spinoff of Apple’s epic “For All Mankind,”using an unique POV play. By shifting the space race perspective to the Soviet side, “Star City” expands its parent show’s

alternate-history conceit in a way that appears to be organic and personal rather than opportunistic and action driven. Apple has been careful with its IP, and this looks like a continuation of that strategy.

HBO Max lands one of the month’s most visually striking releases with Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights.”

Wuthering Heights — l Fix Rating 6/10. Fennell doesn’t make gentle films, and she doesn’t start here. Her take on Emily Brontë’s novel is lush, abrasive, and ultimately exhausting—a story of doomed love told with such relentless misery that it begins to work against itself.

The first third of the film is strong. The childhood connection between Cathy and Heathcliff carries real emotional weight, and the film’s visual language—courtesy of cinematographer Linus Sandgren—does much of the storytelling. But as the characters age, the narrative stalls. What begins as tragedy hardens into repetition, with scene after scene reinforcing the same dour emotional beat without deepening it.

There’s undeniable craft on display. The production design is sumptuous, the performances committed, and Fennell’s stylistic confidence never wavers. But the film’s refusal to offer even a flicker of relief leaves it feeling more punishing than profound.

Free Movies at The Wadsworth! Leisure Services and the Carnegie Library will partner to create an engaging event by providing crafts/activities for select showings! A few features will include downtown Newnan businesses for added fun!

Lilo & Stitch • June 1, 10am & 2pm

Greenland 2: Migration (Mid May) – l Fix

Rating 6/10 Gerard Butler returns to his increasingly reliable niche: mid-budget disaster films that move just fast enough to keep you from asking too many questions. The original “Greenland,” a COVID era release, succeeded on urgency, tracking a family’s desperate race toward survival as the world collapsed. The sequel widens the scope but loses some of that immediacy.

This time, the Garritys are forced out of a vast, but collapsing underground bunker and into a crosscontinental migration through a landscape still reeling from catastrophe. The journey—by land, sea, and whatever else gets them forward—becomes repetitive, even exhausting. And yet, Butler’s grounded presence and the film’s efficient runtime keep it from completely wearing out its welcome.

It’s not an escalation so much as a continuation. Another solid entry in Butler’s run of dependable, unpretentious actioners.

Peacock’s approach remains simple: offer one reason to show up and surround it with familiarity.

That reason could be “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair” available to stream on Peacock starting on May 22. Quentin Tarantino’s long-gestating two film action revenge saga has been combined with added footage into one marathon viewing experience. For fans, it’s an easy proposition—a four-hour immersion into a story that was already designed to feel operatic in scale.

what you’d expect: reality programming, true crime, and library titles designed to fill time rather than command it.

Hulu continues to split the difference between curation and volume.

Deli Boys (Season 2, May 28) — The popular crime series returns after a first season that introduced the show’s central concept. The series followed two Pakistani American brothers navigating their late father’s hidden criminal empire. If it can maintain its unique momentum, “Deli Boys” will remain one of the more distinctive offerings in Hulu’s lineup. Beyond that, the platform leans heavily on its usual mix of reality programming and catalog additions. It’s less about discovery than it is about availability.

Disney+ stays exactly where you’d expect—firmly within its franchise ecosystem.

The Punisher: One Last Kill (May 12) — Jon Bernthal is back as Frank Castle, continuing Marvel’s incremental push toward more characterfocused storytelling. The appeal is direct: if you’re already invested, you’ll be watching. If you’re not, this isn’t likely to change your mind.

Bottom Line:

May’s streaming slate feels less like a statement and more like maintenance. Sequels, spinoffs, reinterpretations—variations on what’s already proven to work.

There are highlights. “Wuthering Heights” for those willing to endure its bleakness but will be enchanted by the visual style. “Greenland 2” for viewers looking for something straightforward and kinetic, while giving viewers another gruff Gerard Butler starring vehicle. “Star City” and “The Boroughs” for high-concept television with at least the promise of something new.

But this is a month built on familiarity. Whether that’s comfort or complacency depends on what you’re looking for.

May 16, 8 to 10pm The Yacht Rock Schooner will take you on a journey to the late ’70s and early ’80s featuring the music of acts like Hall & Oates, Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. The eight-man Schooner features some of Atlanta’s top players with a dual keyboard setup, multiple ace vocalists and (of course) a sax man. Enjoy an evening of feel-good classics and laid-back vibes. Chairs can be put out the day of the show.

West Georgia Technical College Sponsors and Participates in Coweta Grand Prix with Student-Built Derby Car

West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) proudly participated in and sponsored this year’s Coweta Grand Prix, a community event held in downtown Newnan that brings together schools, organizations, and local partners for a day centered around creativity, engineering, and friendly competition.

The Coweta Grand Prix is a community-based soapbox derby-style racing event that allows participants to design, build, and race custom gravity-powered cars. In addition to the races, the event emphasizes hands-on learning, teamwork, and STEM education, providing students and community members the opportunity to apply engineering and fabrication skills in a real-world, high-energy environment.

WGTC’s entry into the event was a collaborative effort between welding students and instructors, who spent several months rebuilding and redesigning a derby car originally constructed in a previous year’s class. The team’s work paid off on race day, with WGTC’s car earning recognition as the Fastest Adult Car at the competition.

Welding instructor Matt Hofius described the project as a true team effort across multiple classes and skill levels.

“As far as the aesthetic, we decided to make the car look like our mascot Knightro with an old hot rod feel,” Hofius said. “We took the car apart, cut it down to size, and started building it back up from there.”

The project was intentionally structured so students could take ownership of different phases of the build. Dual-enrolled student Ben Larson, who had prior experience building a go-kart with his family, helped set up and weld the front suspension. Students in evening classes, Bryson Guarnera and Mason Eidson, fabricated the hood using forms designed by instructors to guide measurements and shaping.

Other creative elements were developed through collaboration across the program. Welding student Alyson Horn designed the wing structures inspired by WGTC’s Knightro mascot, which were later cut using the program’s plasma table and finished with hand-painted detail work. Instructor Ricky Parker supported the project with paintwork and fabrication assistance, while Hofius assisted with final suspension tuning and decal application.

The build process also included sanding, shaping, and final assembly work completed over several months, with students contributing in stages based on class schedules. Hofius noted that the structure of the project

allowed students to build on each other’s progress over time.

“The work was split between morning and night classes, so students didn’t always work together at the same time,” Hofius said. “They would come in and see what had been done before and get excited seeing their plans becoming a reality.”

In addition to technical skill development, Hofius said the project reinforced key workforce readiness lessons.

“They learned how to work as a team, how important sequencing is, and how mistakes can affect the whole project,” he said. “There’s nothing worse than having to weld something after it’s already been painted.”

For WGTC, participation in the Coweta Grand Prix also served as an opportunity to engage with the broader community and showcase student talent.

“It’s been great for students to showcase their creativity and abilities,” Hofius said. “And at the event, it’s just fun to see all the different designs and be part of something the community enjoys.”

Reading with your child for at least 15 minutes daily can drastically improve their language and academics. The more words a child hears, the larger the child’s vocabulary and the larger the child’s vocabulary, the more likely the child will be a proficient reader.
