Each branch will host a rousing kickoff party. Powell and Central libraries will start it off on Saturday, June 3, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Our Senoia branch will also kick off on that day from 10 a.m. to noon.

Grantville library will hold their party on Thursday, June 1 from 10 a.m. to noon as well. These parties will feature programs, games, crafts, and more.

As always, reading contests will be a big part of the summer and sign up will begin on our website (see above) or at coweta.beanstack.com, on May 15. Staff will be available via telephone and in person to help anyone who needs assistance with signing up. There will be categories by grade level for the kids while teens and adults will have their own respective contests and prizes.

All branches have talented, passionate staff who will lead cool programs, but we will also have featured performers too. Locally based, award winning magician Ken Scott will perform several shows for Coweta libraries as will popular magician and sleight of hand expert, Arthur Atsma. Music and dance will also

and a Little Zen Every now and then I step back and take stock of, well, what’s going on. It has not been a pretty few months.

Russia has restarted bombing what are obviously civilian apartments, killing children without a thought. Why ordinary Russians have not stormed Putin’s lair is beyond me.

There is another civil war in Africa. I am not aware of a time in my life when there wasn’t a war somewhere in Africa.

And then we have France. The country is in the midst of major rioting from one end to the other.

By rioting I mean water cannons, batons, riot gear, shots fired, hundreds of police and rioters injured.

And why have the French taken to the trenches, er streets? The government had the audacity to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64.

We are not alone here in the old U.S.A. We seem to be on a shooting spree.

A child is shot because her ball bounced into her neighbor’s yard. A black teenager was killed when he knocked on the wrong door. Ask your neighbor to tone down firing off his AK-47 in the front yard? That’s a shooting that led to the execution-style killing of five family members.

Two teenagers - cheerleaders no less - were shot when they got into the wrong car. Their assailant followed them to their car and shot them. When they start shooting the cheerleaders …

A former president has been indicted on more than 30 counts relating to using campaign funds to cover up an affair with a porn star. I never thought I would write a sentence like that. The former vice president just testified before an investigative panel regarding the aforementioned former president’s role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots to determine whether the former president tried to overthrow the elections.

Everyone, that being government types, is raising hell about the Chinese-owned app Tik-Tok, saying our Eastern friends are using the information gleaned to spy on Americans.

News flash to the few who don’t get it yet. Our phones are spying on us. (Everyone nod their heads please). Don’t believe me? Start talking about anything near your phone. I promise whatever you were talking about will show up in your next Internet search.

A few other things on my mind …

How to leave your phone number. One does not leave a long message and then say “my number is: 9185551212.” I got, maybe, the first two numbers. I will now have to replay your looooong message multiple times to get your number. Try this: “my number is 918 … 555 … 1212. Those … are pauses if you were wondering.

Speaking of phones, when someone tries to leave you a message and you get the nice recording saying “the mailbox is full … goodbye,” or “the mailbox has not been set up, goodbye,” yeah, people will not want to do business with you.

And speaking of business, what is up with this new trend of just not showing up for a scheduled meeting? By scheduled, I’m talking about accepting calendar invites, text reminders, etc., and then playing ghost. How do these people stay in business?

Final thoughts.

At Easter, when we are supposed to be celebrating Jesus’ resurrection, many families have lamb. Probably just as many have ham. Jesus was Jewish.

Last two: there is an animal called the East Asian Raccoon Dog and you are not using your manual can opener correctly - do the Google.

Mr. Personality Newnan’s Goodwill Ambassador MAY: The highlights for this month are National Day of Prayer, Mother’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Armed Forces Day, and Memorial Day. Considering what I hear of the daily news, I believe that every day should be National Day of Prayer.

Mother’s Day also should be a daily event, not just a once a year affair.

I am sure I am not the only person that wishes I could do Mother’s Day over again in 20/20 hindsight.

With all of the April showers we had, there should be an abundance of May flowers. Perhaps there is more sunshine days ahead at long last. I see people planting and digging in the dirt on my way to the Square and back. The Courthouse Square itself is starting to bloom as more and more people visit on holidays and on the long weekends.

There are ever more shops with a long range of services, colors, and decor.

The Carnegie Library has gotten new carpet and it is beautiful, fresh, and adds class to the entire library. Another good idea by Susan Crutchfield, the Carnegie director, and her friendly staff who are a joy to visit daily.

I hope to see The Taste of Newnan return to the Courthouse Square and a healthy farmer’s market as well. Every day I give thanks to the Divine Spirit for being sent to this spirit- filled town of Newnan. God truly lives here. The positive energy and spiritual vibration of Divine Spirit can be strongly felt 24/7. I had still yet another dream a few nights ago in which I found the shining light of the Divine Spirit behind a locked door and I was trying to let the light shine out freely upon me and throughout the universe. I am still pondering this dream for the spiritual meaning. I shaved off my facial hair due to a dream right before this one; simply a matter of OBEDIENCE.

This book speaks of the wisdom of the desert mothers and the desert fathers, as well as that of the Benedictine Sisters of Erse. I found this book to be truly a refreshing read, as it paints out the difference between religious truth, spiritual truth, and tradition. I intend to read this book many times. I feel this should be the second book you read following the Bible. I found God’s wisdom on every page and I suggest you read it for yourself.

This is quite the change from the “buyer beware” era of real estate in the past, when there typically was no due diligence period and the buyer was “locked-in” the contract.

What Is Due Diligence?

When purchasing real estate, it is important to know what a “due diligence” period is. This is the opportunity for the buyer to do their homework and discover information about the property they are purchasing. The due diligence period is negotiable between the buyer and seller and is part of the purchase and sale agreement.

In residential real estate, this time period is typically the first 7 to 14 days of the contract, but can be longer or shorter. This is the best time for a buyer to conduct a home inspection. Some people think of due diligence like an option. The buyer can option out of the contract without any penalty and have their earnest money returned in full.

Regarding home inspections, the buyer can use the ability to option out of the contract as leverage for concerns found during the home inspection. The purchaser may ask the seller for home repairs during this

Home inspections are not all that is conducted during a due diligence period. In land purchases, a buyer may perform a perc test, to confirm that the soil is sufficiently permeable to water. This is necessary in rural areas for septic tanks. If the land is being rezoned, the purchaser may need a lengthy due diligence to determine if the local government will rezone the property for the intended use. For example, a buyer may want to rezone a property from rural conservation to commercial. This would require a rezoning hearing with the local governing authority. Typically, you will see several months of due diligence allowed for this process.

In the history of real estate, the due diligence period is still a relatively new concept. Due diligence is controversial to some agents as they see sellers getting taken advantage of. A buyer beats a seller down on price initially during the contract negotiation and then comes back again a few days later to negotiate again during the due diligence period. To protect themselves, sellers can attempt to sell “as-is” with no repairs.

In a strong real estate market, the seller can also use their market to advantage. If the buyer threatens to back out during due diligence, it is likely the seller will find another buyer quickly. This gives the seller some negotiation power. At the same time, it may be very difficult for the buyer to find another home in a competitive market.

Our Featured Artist: ELLIS LOWERY I’m a Newnan native, Newnan High School Grad, former Marine and retired Army combat Veteran after 24 years active duty.

I always wanted to be able to play an instrument along with their songs, but never seemed to have the time to commit and ended up buying and selling several guitars over the years.

Then in 2011 I was instructing a class for the Army, and a guy introduced me to the ukulele and taught me 4 chords.

A switch flipped and I learned a bunch of old classics on the ukulele. I would sit around the campfire and come up with my own songs just as a hobby.

Candis bought me a guitar for Christmas and I was a little intimidated by it for a while, but started teaching myself chord progressions and playing along with my favorite songs. It all just kept going from there - I played a few small gigs, and began to write. I continue to write and have shows planned in Griffin, Tyrone, Coweta county, Fayette and beyond.

I guess the best way to describe my music experience is - selftaught, and just picking up as much as I can through the years of knowing and playing with the amazing talent of the musicians I’ve been fortunate enough to spend time with.

When Treating Strokes, Every Minute Counts Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. As a result, Piedmont Newnan Hospital is on a mission to increase awareness of stroke signs, symptoms and risk factors. While Piedmont Newnan can provide excellent care for patients suffering from stroke, the biggest factor in creating positive outcomes is for a person to act quickly at the first signs of symptoms.

“Time means everything when it comes to a patient’s potential recovery from a stroke,” said Robin Baker, RN, BSN, SCRN, CEN, Stroke Program Manager at Piedmont Newnan. “If you are experiencing any symptoms of a stroke or other cardiac event, call 9-1-1 immediately. Your outcomes are far worse from a heart attack or stroke if you delay care or do not come to the hospital.”

A stroke is when the blood flow to the brain is interrupted due to a blockage or a ruptured blood vessel. When this happens, the brain does not receive oxygen that is required to prevent brain cells from dying.

The key of optimal recovery of a stroke and decreasing disability is to B.E.F.A.S.T.:  Balance - sudden dizziness or loss of balance  Eyes - sudden vision loss or double vision  Face - look for an uneven smile  Arm - check if one arm or leg is weak  Speech - listen for slurred speech or difficulty speaking  Time - call 9-1-1 right away

According to the Heart Attack and Stroke Prevention Center, Georgia is part of a group of 11 states, call the Stroke Belt, where the risk of having a stroke is 34 percent higher than in other areas of the country. Researchers attribute this to higher rates of obesity, smoking and cardiovascular disease such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

“The faster a stroke is recognized and treatment is provided to restore blood flow to the brain the greater chance disability will be reduced. Every minute nearly 2 million brain cells can die. Recognizing the symptoms and calling 9-1-1 immediately are the first steps to improving outcomes, “said Baker.

Piedmont’s Community Impact Brings Its Purpose to Life Piedmont Newnan and other nearby Piedmont hospitals performed more than 130 community involvement activities, more than 100 health education and awareness activities, and over 20 community health services.

Each year, in accordance with government requirements as a nonprofit health system, Piedmont prepares a community benefit report narrowly defined by the federal government, with fixed dollar amounts and time directly related to improving the health of its communities.

Nevertheless, Piedmont’s efforts extend beyond quantifiable financial benefits. That is why for the past two years, Piedmont has prepared a Community Impact Report that highlights the myriad ways its team members — physicians, nurses, executives, staff and beyond — fulfill Piedmont’s purpose to make a positive difference in every life and every community we touch, showing the qualitative depth of its impact in the communities we serve across the state.

During Piedmont’s Fiscal Year 2022 (July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022), Piedmont performed more than 345 community involvement activities, 110 health education and awareness activities, 55 community health services, 50 Physician Enterprise activities and 20 Diversity Equity and Inclusion activities. In addition, Piedmont employees were represented on more than 265 board or committee memberships. Piedmont provided nearly $360 million in Community Benefit in FY 2022, including approximately $310 million in uncompensated care.

At the local level, Piedmont Newnan provided medical screenings and supplies to patients of the Coweta Samaritan Clinic, including 500 COVID-19 test kits in partnership with Georgia-Pacific, free screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasounds, free lab testing and diagnostic imaging. Over the course of 2022, Piedmont Newnan served 117 Coweta Samaritan women through free screening mammograms. The Coweta Samaritan Clinic is a local, nonprofit organization that provides free medical care in a faith-based environment to adult residents of Coweta County who lack health insurance.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (May 5) – l Fix Rating 8/10 — After seeing a franchise low with the lackluster “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” that limped just over $200 million domestically earlier this year, Marvel Studios is in desperate need of a bonafide hit. And the ensemble “Guardians” series has been a dependable property, with the 2017 sequel managing to enchant viewers with comic action thrills. Director James Gunn, who now makes his home helming the DC universe, infuses “Vol. 3” with the goofy comradery that’s made the previous movies so entertaining.

There might not be a dry eye in the house as the story focuses primarily on instantly endearing Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), the cocky raccoon with an attitude who can make and repair almost any machine. When he’s mortally injured and dying, the other Guardians span the heavens to save him. This quest leads them to a megalomaniac named The High Evolutionary (a fantastic Chukwudi Iwuji), the man responsible for Rocket’s mutated existence.

This sweetly sentimental film is immensely entertaining as Peter “Star-Lord” Quill (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Mantis (Pom Kiementieff), Kraglin (Sean Gunn), even Gamora (Zoe Saldana) crisscross the universe to help a member of their extended family. Will “Vol. 3” save the MCU? Let’s say that it’s a step in the right direction.

Sisu (now playing) – l Fix Rating 7/10 — Writer/Director Jalmari Helander (see 2010’s Christmas/Santa Claus-themed “Rare Exports”) and his team know how to make a genre action picture.

The WWII set “Sisu” is another hugely entertaining example of Helander’s work. This guy would be right at home helming a “John Wick” spin-off.

We’re told that the Finnish word Sisu has no literal translation, but it refers to “a white-knuckled form of courage and unimaginable determination in the face of overwhelming odds.” And in Helander’s film, several men possess it, even the bloodthirsty Nazis.

This import from Finland has Nazi soldiers in the waning days of WWII running afoul of a lonely gold prospector. Of course, that prospector, Aatami (Jorma Tommila), isn’t who he appears to be.

Much blood is spilled as Aatami works through the German ranks with everything from his trusty pickaxe to an array of guns.

Evil Dead Rise (now playing) – l NO Fix Rating 5/10 — “Evil Dead Rise” is an unpleasant film. While this is by design, the morbid elements dominate, making it a tough movie to recommend even to franchise fans.

In this “Dead” installment, the action occurs in Los Angeles, where an evil supernatural force visits a family. When the evil possesses a poor soul, they become an entity known as a “Deadite.”

There’s little joy associated with the possessions we witness in “Evil Dead Rise.” Part of the problem is that despite actress Lily Sullivan’s heroic turn as Beth, even with the franchise’s signature shotgun and a chainsaw, she isn’t given any of the vicious wit Bruce Campbell (the star of the first three “Dead” entries) capably commanded. Everything is handled with deadly seriousness resulting in another sad and ugly horror movie about a family torn apart in the most unimaginable way possible.

In “Evil Dead Rise,” Beth is emotionally tortured with no levity to relieve all the horrible silliness around her. And make no mistake, the stupidity of the Deadite possessions is so absurd that a bit of humor is essential. Sadly, that necessary ingredient is absent.

Streaming Selects: The Family Stallone (Season 1 starts on May 17) — Sylvester Stallone and his attractive family open up in a reality series. This show appears to feature a celebrity family’s “unscripted” day-to-day life. Some big names drop in, as Dolph Lundgren and Al Pacino appear in the trailer. Can they be the next Kardashians?

The Other Two (Season 3 starts on May 4) – This show is a funny reality parody about two siblings, Cary (Drew Tarver) and Brooke (Heléne Yorke), who inanely try to find their footing in shark-infested celebrity waters. And their little brother, Chase (Case Walker), has become a big internet sensation. This loopy series makes a good time waster and features a deep comedic cast, including Molly Shannon and Wanda Sykes.

Theatrical Teasers: Hypnotic (May 12) – Ben Affleck plays a detective investigating an enduring mystery involving his lost daughter. Secret government forces may be using hypnotic mind control in this slick-looking conspiracy thriller. Robert Rodriguez directs from a script he cowrote.

Fast X (May 19) – The 10th movie in the bombastic, over-the-top, high-octane franchise isn’t the last. “Fast X” is just part one of a twopart grand finale. Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family confront a new danger in Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa), the son of the drug kingpin Hernan Reyes killed in 2011’s “Fast Five.”

The Little Mermaid (May 26) – Disney continues to recycle its animated properties in live-action format with a reimagining of their 1989 Oscar winner. In this version, Halle Bailey inhabits the iconic role of Ariel, the young mermaid who makes a deal for legs so that she can explore life on land. Naturally, she falls for a handsome prince who finds her equally irresistible. Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy lead an all-star cast.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (series premiere May 4) – This “Bridgerton” spin-off follows the life and rise of a young Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio). The popular “Bridgerton” universe, from super-producer Shonda Rhimes, captured youthful imagination in 2020 and has shown little sign of diminishing.

It’s a historical romance blending sexual orientations and racial identities and mixing in modern pop music unusually.

Platonic (series premiere May 24) – The team behind the “Neighbors” movies reunites to give us this new romantic comedy that holds back the romance. Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne play childhood friends that reconnect as adults. But instead of falling madly in love, they decide to be besties. Rogen is a bachelor who owns a microbrewery, and Byrne is a mother of three. Will their platonic friendship last? I’m not counting on it.

Crater (May 12) – When a boy loses his father, he leaves the safety of a lunar mining colony to explore a legendary crater. He takes four of his best friends with him. This science-fiction fantasy (set in the year 2257) looks like great fun.

Primo (series premiere May 19) – Watch this on Prime’s free channel. “Primo” comes from the producers of “Parks & Recreation” and “The Good Place.” The San Antonio set coming-of-age story tracks a teen coping with his varied, busy family while also balancing his social life with college right around the corner. It’s based on the life of bestselling author Shea Serrano.

From Special Reports A large number of smiling young engineering and sporting enthusiasts were on the roads in downtown Newnan Saturday, April 15.

Each one got behind the wheel of his or her very own custom-made vehicle for an old-fashioned Soapbox Derby, a fundraiser to benefit the Coweta Community Foundation, Bridging the Gap, and local Boys & Girls Clubs.

Yamaha employees spent several weeks off and on lending a hand to the racers.

“It’s been a really unique experience for us that are in the structured ‘day in, day out’ of corporate work to have this opportunity to take our skillset and our knowledge and relate that to an application that’s fun for the kids,” said Yamaha senior design engineer Evan Kaminsky.

The design workshops allowed the young people to give their input on the design and breathe life into the cars so that they would be unique to each child’s liking. For Kaminsky, hearing these kids say thank you and that the car turned out exactly as their young minds conceived it was especially gratifying.

The educational part of the experience was not lost on the grownups, either.

“It’s been cool to have these kids actually turn a wrench and understand some of the mechanical properties and have a mechanical understanding of systems in general,” said Kaminsky.

Or, as development engineer Jake Crace put it: “When kids learn science, everybody wins.”

Even in the initial stages of the design, the young people expressed their excitement about the upcoming race as they began to see their visions come to life.

“I’m most excited about driving a car and meeting new people and winning the prize,” said Trevion.

“I love riding my bike. I think it’ll be even cooler to be in the soapbox like that,” said Virginia.

Once the process moved from design to assembly and the actual cars began to take shape, the kids were even more in awe.

“It was crazy,” said Adonis. “I didn’t think it was going to look like we actually wanted it to look. I like it.

Coweta Community Foundation board chair Cynthia Bennett noted that probably the most remarkable thing she heard on the day the finished cars were revealed was when one young man looked at the engineers and said, “This has been the best hour of my life.”

While the cars were built by and for children, many of the adults were impressed enough that they would not have hesitated to get behind the wheel if given an opportunity.

Fastest Over All

Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation, the title sponsor for the event, had a real hands-on role in the entire process. Their engineers and other design professionals brought in the contestants to their Newnan facility and walked them through the creation of their vehicles from start to finish. Once the racing machines were built, the young drivers were able to test them under the supervision of their Yamaha partners in advance of the actual race.

“When they showed up to actually build their cars, I could see the light in their eyes,” said Amelia Davis, regional director, Boys & Girls Club of Metro Atlanta. “It gave them such enthusiasm to know that they can build something from beginning to end.”

“If I had the chance to race any of these cars, I would,” said Amelia Davis. “But I was so excited to stand on the sidelines and watch these kids live out their dream.”

But just standing back and watching has been its own reward, as CCF executive director Kristen Webb acknowledged.

“Seeing the smiles on these kids’ faces, and the smiles on the adults’ faces, has been a true highlight,” Webb said.
