Briefly describe yourself and what you do/did.

Best piece of advice you’ve received.

Tough question: I’ve had the benefit of some amazing mentors throughout my career and have received nuggets of wisdom and advice from them all, so to select a “best piece” is difficult. I will, however, say that the gem that resonates most at the moment is to be certain to never become so consumed with work, titles, and material things that you neglect your family, particularly your parents! You never know what tomorrow has in store, so cherish today with them. My dad’s health is declining so I’ve thought about those words a lot lately.

If I had it to do over.

If you weren’t doing what you are, you would be.

If I weren’t a healthcare executive, I’d love to be a high-end real estate broker. I’m a huge fan of the television series Million Dollar Listings NY. The show follows four agents as they move and shake around NY selling homes to some of the world’s wealthiest people.

It seems like a pretty fun job to have!

Your go-to food.

You are going on an extended solo trip. What three albums and three books would you take?

Albums: Blueprint (Jay-Z), Off the Wall (Michael Jackson), Confessions (Usher).

Books: Outliers (Malcolm Gladwell), Strength To Love (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.), A Promised Land (Barack Obama) Tell us one thing about yourself that few people know.

I’m extremely afraid of heights. I hide it relatively well, but my heart rate increases whenever I’m forced to use an exterior exposed elevator. I’m considering starting a petition to have them banned. No one needs to see out of an elevator anyway!

You are hosting a dinner party for six. What five people, living or dead, would you invite and why?

Kobe Bryant – I greatly admired his work ethic, will to win, and ability to transition from the game of basketball as arguably one of the best to ever play to game, to an Oscar winning film producer.

Barack Obama – His rise to become the nation’s first African American President, while still serving as an engaged father and husband is admirable.

Abraham Lincoln – Arguably the nation’s most impactful President. His perseverance and vision as a leader was second to none.

Rev. Samuel Harris – While not known like the other guests, he was my wife’s grandfather and probably one of the strongest, wisest and wittiest men I had the pleasure of being around. I didn’t prioritize spending the type of time with him that I should have to truly soak up all of his knowledge and insight, and will forever regret it.

Jay-Z – I’m a huge fan of not only his music, but also his business savvy.

Name an as yet unfulfilled dream.

I’m the President of City of Hope Cancer Center, formerly Cancer Treatment Centers of America. In my role, I’m responsible for the strategic and administrative oversight of City of Hope’s Southeastern market hospital and clinics. I am tasked with leading the market in integrating new and innovative approaches to improve patient care, cost reduction, and community perception. I also serve as the liaison to our national Board of Directors for all items related to market performance. I routinely collaborate with our medical staff, research leaders, and enterprise executives on long-term strategic initiatives aimed at addressing the organization’s mission of improving access to cancer care for all individuals affected by the disease.

I would have purchased Bitcoin when it was initially presented to me as an investment opportunity. In 2016, I was a young healthcare executive working as the Chief Operating Officer of Kaiser Permanente’s Central Valley area. A physician colleague mentioned it to me, and rather than look into it seriously, I wrote it off as a hoax or get-rich-quick scheme. Well, I looked back a few weeks ago and discovered that a single coin purchased in 2016 for a little over $900 would now be valued at over $67,000! Definitely wish I had that to do over!

Dogs! We don’t have either yet, but our daughter is wearing us down. She’s got her mother’s powers of persuasion! In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if I arrived home after a long day in the office to a brand new dog, and my wife and daughter smiling at me as if it magically appeared.

I will not lose, for even in defeat, there is a valuable lesson learned so it evens it up for me! Jay-Z (Blueprint 2) It’s a reminder that our trials and tribulations can be just as meaningful as our triumphs when we view them from an opportunistic lens.

Name something that you are extremely glad you did or accomplished.

Of all my accomplishments and achievements, I’m most proud that I get to serve as a husband and father! I have an extremely intelligent and loving wife and the cutest 6-year-old little girl in the world! (of course I’m a little biased) They are truly the greatest gift I could ever ask for!

What advice would you give your younger self just starting out on their own.

Keep passion and purpose top of mind as you navigate your career.

30 local students received a total of $60,000 in scholarships this year from Coweta-Fayette EMC’s Operation Round Up Trust.

15 students received Melissa Segars Memorial Scholarships, worth $3,000 each; and 15 students received Coweta-Fayette Trust Technical Scholarships, worth $1,000 each.

The 2024 Memorial Day Ceremony in Newnan honored PFC Daniel Lowery.

Originally scheduled for Veterans Park, the ceremony was moved next door to McKoon’s Funeral Home due to rain. Lowery grew up in the Madras area off of Happy Valley Circle. He was killed in action by an enemy sniper while on patrol in Vietnam.

Over in Peachtree City, inclement weather forced the Memorial Day Ceremony into the City Council Chambers as more than 100 people attended. Peachtree City thanked the American Legion Post 50, VFW Post 9949, Marine Corps League and all participating members of the local veterans groups for helping to make their ceremony possible.

The Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony in Senoia was canceled due to the inclement weather in the area.

East Coweta High School History Teacher Jennifer Sandlin was named the 2024 Coweta County Teacher of the Year recently at the annual Coweta teacher of the year ceremony held by the Coweta County Board of Education. Sandlin – a 20-year educator at ECHS – was chosen from among 33 nominees from all Coweta County schools, and three finalists, including Rebecca Craver, a 4th Grade teacher at Elm Street Elementary School, and Stephanie Landrum, the Media Specialist at Ruth Hill Elementary School. Just entering his 20s, Aaron Watkins has already forged a name for himself in the Newnan area.

Coming from a musical background where his mother, a multi-instrumentalist and a singer with a music degree, and a father, a dedicated guitarist, has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Tim Dugger. When performing, his stage presence and captivating sound has become a crowd favorite for audiences of all ages.

His incredibly low, smokey voice, often compared to Josh Turner and Trace Adkins, allows him to draw inspiration from a diverse range of musical influences.

Aaron has also crafted his guitar skills that are far beyond his years. He has an ability to showcase astonishing speed, accuracy, and has an innate sense of melody while playing lead guitar, which has become one of the highlights of his shows. Releasing his first single “Holy Smokin” in October of 2023, he finds himself on Atlanta country radio stations for their local musician spotlight shows.

Holding a production deal with “Realpeoplemusic” at Real 2 Reel Studios in Jonesboro, he is collaborating with acclaimed artists Brian Collins and Will Turpin from Collective Soul. Currently back in the studio, he is writing and working on his upcoming EP. Channeling the collective talents of the musical artists around him, he will continue to produce exceptional projects that are sure to leave a lasting impression. Aaron possesses boundless potential for a radiant future in the music industry.

When he’s not playing one of his own shows, he can usually be found at open mic nights at Abide, Anthony’s or sitting in with other musicians. He’s doing something music related 5 nights a week.

June: The highlights for this month are Flag Day and the first day of Summer. My good friend from Seldon’s Old School Barbershop will make house calls and shut-ins can request a haircut and a shave. You can also find me conversing and socializing on the Courthouse Square most days of the week. On most weekends, someone will be playing music on some corner on the Courthouse Square for hours on end. My Book of the Month is titled “Who Moved My Cheese?” By Spencer Johnson. This book is about a funny story that has much hidden wisdom about human nature. How we tend to resist change, feel entitled, overanalyzing things, and our inclination to procrastinate. It is also very interesting how the author is applying much hype and overemphasizing the psychological contents of a simple story to enhance the book’s importance. This obvious ploy to sell the book is another good reason to read it. It gives another side of human nature, read the page “About the Author” on the very last page for more hype and more exaggerations basically overselling both the author and the book. A classic example of “ego” getting in the way of a good story. I suggest you read the book for the wisdom it contains and the unexpected insight on the use of hype that is becoming obvious as more authors use the same ploy.

This shall be my last column my friends. It is time to better myself in mind, body, and in spirit, as I am in the winter of life. I am downsizing my efforts and activities to match my levels of energy.

As my mind and body decline, I am forced to adapt accordingly. My attention shall be fully focused upon the Divine Spirit as I enter the first of the last stages of life. It is time, my memory is fading more and more each day and it is difficult to walk short distances. I shall as always be living each day to the very fullest. I shall keep doing my sign waving gigs and showing up at the Courthouse Square as much as possible.

New Classes Now Offered at Piedmont Newnan Cancer Wellness The Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Center at Piedmont Newnan Hospital recently added acupressure, sound journey, drum circle, a journaling class, and reiki to its monthly programs. Cancer Wellness, located on the third floor of the Piedmont Medical Plaza next to the hospital, offers free support services and programs such as yoga, cooking demonstrations, expressive art classes and counseling to anyone affected by cancer, regardless of whether or not he or she is a Piedmont patient.

The Cancer Wellness Center saw record numbers in 2023, with a total of 4,424 interactions, through classes and services that focus on the five aspects of wellness: exercise, nutrition, creativity, knowledge and relaxation. The classes and services are offered on a weekly or monthly basis.

Acupressure, a traditional Chinese healing method where pressure is applied in order to stimulate key healing points, is offered by appointment and helps reduce pain while leaving recipients feeling more alert and energetic.

Journaling A new journaling class, Just Write, is offered weekly and motivates class members to incorporate journaling into their wellness routine.

Music Two new weekly music classes, sound journey and drum circle, both led by Kim “Kiiom” Coker, were also added. Sound journey, is a sound vibration experience, that uses tuning forks, crystal singing bowls, crystal pyramids and other instruments to explore a sense of peace and tranquility while also possibly releasing emotions that have been stagnant.

Drum circle is for people with all levels of drumming experience, that is intentionally freestyle in nature, and allows participants to maximize the creativity and relaxation found when drumming.

Reiki, led by Aida Dotson, is available by appointment only, and helps restore the body’s natural ability to heal, purify and create balance by working with energy throughout the body.

Another new offering at the Cancer Wellness Center is The Turquoise Table. It is said that there is a special connection made between people when they gather around a table and the conversations that occur may not take place in any other context. This table is a place to connect, share and build friendships in a safe and trusted space.

Support Groups are Important Part of Cancer Wellness There are over one hundred hours of programming each month at the Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Newnan Hospital, ranging from exercise classes and cooking demonstrations, to gatherings of individuals interested in arts and crafts.

Each program has an educational value and connects people at various points on their cancer journey with others, but often the most beneficial and most highly regarded programs offered are the support groups.

There are currently four active support groups offered each month, many of which formed when Cancer Wellness launched in 2014. While the numbers of attendees can vary from group to group or month to month, the consistency of the programs offered provides an important resource for individuals and families facing a cancer diagnosis.

Recently, a men’s support group was added, to support men who have been diagnosed with any type of cancer. Led by a prostate cancer survivor, these monthly discussions will provide information, emotional support, education and resources.

“Each support group may have a different overall focus, but they all provide a way for someone to get what they need, whether that’s advice, answers, encouragement, or just someone to listen,” said Jennifer Palmer, Program Coordinator, Thomas. F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness. “The support groups all have excellent facilitators, but it’s the individual members who truly lead the groups and often provide terrific insight and support.”

In Theaters: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (now playing) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – This fifth film in the “Mad Max” franchise is a prequel to 2015’s Oscar-winning “Fury Road.” “Furiosa” gives us the origin story of the title character, a grizzled one-armed heroine played by Charlize Theron in the previous installment. “Furiosa” reveals how she lost her arm and the crucible of violence that created the fierce, expert driver of the almost unstoppable rolling killing machine called the War Rig. Like “Fury Road,” the story is set in the dangerous desert, where gangs rule the wasteland, and a fortress called the Citadel is governed by the strange Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme, taking over the role from the late Hugh Keays-Byrne).

As part of the origin story, we meet Furiosa as a child (played by Alyla Browne), where she lives in a kind of garden paradise. But her idyllic world is shattered when a motorcycle gang steals her away.

Furiosa falls into the hands of an evil and crazy warlord who calls himself Dementus (a bizarre Chris Hemsworth). Her experiences with Dementus lead her on an adventure that we know ends in the employ of Immortan Joe behind the walls of the Citadel.

The first third of “Furiosa” is thrilling and impressive. While this part of the story takes place within the “Mad Max” universe, it feels like its own contained story. But when the film shifts to the older version of the character (then played by Anya Taylor-Joy), the elements that made “Fury Road” a stone-cold-classic take over but with a more muted effect. Furiosa’s journey is somewhat familiar, as she distinguishes herself on the hard-fought road, helping to fend off marauding gangs that attack the infamous War Rig. The script fleshes out the rules of the wasteland, revisiting Immortan Joe’s sickening harem of beauties and his attempts to sire “whole” children. And we get the politics of the various strongholds that feed Joe’s compound. The War Rig is instrumental in maintaining the balance of power, and a sequence showing the construction of one of these gas-guzzling marvels will interest franchise fans.

Streaming Selects: How to Rob a Bank (June 5) – l Fix Rating 8/10 – Directors Stephen Robert Morse (see “Amanda Knox”) and Seth Porges tell the story of a mysterious 1990s Seattle bank robber dubbed the world’s best. Through creative use of archived footage, high-end Hollywood-style re-enactments, and colorful comic book-like animations, Morse and Porges vividly put us in the moment, creatively chronicling the rise of a notorious and famous Robin Hood-type character. Interviews with the surviving members of the ill-fated criminal operation narrate this “how to” and “how not to” cautionary tale. At the film’s end, you will be jonesing for a narrative feature film that uses this skillfully produced documentary as the template.

Hit Man (June 7) – Actor Glen Powell (see “Top Gun: Maverick” and recent surprise hit “Anyone But You”) co-writes “Hit Man” with his “Everybody Wants Some!!” director Richard Linklater. The film has Powell playing a college professor named Gary, who moonlights as the title character, a fake assassin for hire working for the police department. However, things take a dangerous and romantic turn when Gary falls for one of his clients (Adria Arjona).

Theatrical Teasers: The Boys (season 4, June 13) – It’s time to become “wrathful gods!” Homelander (Antony Starr) suggests to his fellow supers in the trailer for season 4 of Prime’s violent comic book series. It’s been two years since the end of season 3, with Homelander realizing that the more evil he gets, the more popular he becomes. Can Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and his team stop the fascist forces led by Homelander and the sinister corporation Vought International? I’ll bet watching how things play out will be a bloody good time.

Star Wars: The Acolyte (series premiere June 4) – Set a hundred years before “The Phantom Menace,” “The Acolyte” takes place during the Star Wars universe’s High Republic era. The story has a Jedi Master investigating some unusual crimes that may be linked to a former Padawan. The diverse cast includes Jodie Turner-Smith (see 2019’s criminally underrated “Queen & Slim”) and Carrie-Anne Moss, who will get to use a bit of the Force that may remind viewers of her moves as Trinity in “The Matrix” franchise.

Presumed Innocent (June 12) – Jake Gyllenhaal plays a prosecutor in Chicago who is accused of a shocking murder in this limited series based on the Scott Turow bestseller. The material was adapted for the big screen in 1990 with the late Alan J. Pakula (see “All the President’s Men”) directing and Harrison Ford in the lead. Like most Apple TV+ projects, this eight-episode series is handsomely produced and sports a top-tier cast, including Ruth Negga (see “Preacher”), Bill Camp, and Peter Sarsgaard.

House of the Dragon (June 16) — The splashy, sexy, and violent prequel series to HBO’s epic “Game of Thrones” franchise delivers its second season with more complex George R.R. Martin storytelling. After a compelling but uneven first season that helped to construct a familiar but new world, this second helping appears to lean heavily on the action by heaping on the battles and fire-breathing dragons. With a new king occupying the famed Iron Throne, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and her vicious brother, Prince Daemon (Matt Smith), must find a way to reclaim their rightful place in the kingdom. Of course, that means that many must die.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die (June 7) — After reviving the “Bad Boys” franchise in 2020 with the surprisingly successful “Bad Boys for Life,” Will Smith and Martin Lawrence slide back into the roles of Miami Police Detective Lieutenants Michael Lowrey and Marcus Burnett. When their late Captain Conrad Howard (Joe Pantoliano) is accused of being in league with a drug cartel, Lowey and Burnett work together and outside official channels to clear their mentor’s name. Directors Adil & Bilall return to helm this installment after finding commercial success with the last one.

Inside Out 2 (June 14) – Pixar tries to capture the old magic that led them to Oscar and commercial gold in 2016 with the original “Inside Out.” In this sequel, Riley Anderson (now voiced by Kensington Tallman, replacing Kaitlyn Dias) is 13 years old and begins to experience new emotions. While much of the voice cast returns, actor Tony Hale replaces Bill Hader as Fear, and Maya Hawke joins the cast playing a new emotion, Anxiety.

Tuesday (June 14) – Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays Zora, a mother devoted to caring for her disabled daughter Tuesday (Lola Petticrew).

They are forced to confront Death when it arrives in the form of a fantastic talking bird. The trailers for this one tease a moving and inspiring portrait that explores end-of-life decisions while celebrating the short time in this world we all hold near and dear.

The Bikeriders (June 21) – This long-delayed project about a Midwestern motorcycle club known as the Vandals will finally make its way to the big screen after being pushed out last year. The film is written and directed by the talented Jeff Nichols (see 2016’s “Loving” and 2011’s “Take Shelter”). The cast is equally impressive, led by breakout “Elvis” star Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Michael Shannon, Boyd Holbrook, Jodie Comer, and “Challengers” heartthrob Mike Faist. Local readers will be keen to see this one because Norman Reedus has a significant role.

A Quiet Place: Day One (June 28) – The third film in the “A Quiet Place” franchise is the first installment not directed by John Krasinski. As the title suggests, this entry is a prequel showing us the arrival of the killer aliens from a different perspective. Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o stars.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (June 28) – The first of two Horizon films to be released this year, “Chapter 1,” is Kevin Costner’s big budgeted Western gamble. The story is set over a 15year timespan, both before and after the Civil War. Costner is in the film, along with a large ensemble cast. Part 2 will be released on August 16.

In May, I really took the name of my column to a whole ‘nother level. I went WAY out and about – overseas.

A belated graduation gift to our kids, our trip took us to London and Paris for nine days. With dreams of hanging with the Royal Family and baguettes, cheese, and wine for every meal, I planned the trip within an inch of its life. I was excited, and also intimidated. I had only been to Europe forty years ago with my grandparents. I might as well have been wearing a neon sign saying “HEY Y’ALL, WE DON’T SPEAK BRITISH OR FRENCH. WE ARE DOING OUR BEST.”

Despite all the language barriers, and not really knowing what things were going to be like, we fared pretty well. Honestly, people in both cities were friendly and nice to us. They turned out to be more like us than I expected. They dressed like us, laughed like us, were tourists like us, had good manners like (some of) us. They gave up subway seats to elderly folks like us. They helped when we didn’t understand the announcement to switch trains and told us what train to take. (No telling where we would’ve ended up!)

about looking and feeling different, I was able to learn about these different cultures and expand my mind. Traveling is fun and stressful and beautiful and crazy and tiring and energizing and humbling. This trip was a good reminder that wherever you go, people are people. I hope you’ll discover the same wherever your adventures take you this summer.

It is reassuring that once I got over my apprehension

In London, even though we speak the same language, it’s not the same. I was fascinated to hear their terms for things. Lift = elevator, tube = subway, crisps = chips, chips = french fries, uni = university, innit = isn’t it, etc. A big sign on the tube says to “mind the gap.” There really is a gap, sizes of which vary, between the trains and the platforms, and you really do have to mind it, lest you fall in, never to be heard from again. Well, it’s not that dramatic, but you could get hurt. So, mind the gap!

In Paris, we were ready to try out our new, fresh Duolingo (free version, obviously) skills. Fortunately, most everyone spoke English, and they were spared from wasting their valuable time while we searched for words we didn’t know. I did try to say small things here and there, and beamed with pride when I asked for sugar for my tea. Small victories, guys.

One of my low points in Paris with the language was when I ordered a baguette, of all things. Seems simple, non? Well, I ordered a baguette and then she started saying words back. Lots of words. So I just said “yes.” Then she asked a question, and I didn’t know the words there either, so I just said “yes.” She then held up a baguette and I said “yes.” And then, she held up another baguette. And, you guessed it, I said yes. Sigh.

Fellow Cowetans, I apologize. I tried to represent us well. I really did. In that moment, though, I felt like David Sedaris in Me Talk Pretty One Day. It was humbling. The story ended well, however. She eventually put a beautiful baguette in a bag and I paid for it. She even smiled at me. I feel sure that she was thinking

I had the pleasure of speaking to the residents at Wesley Woods of Newnan recently regarding the listing process. I thought I would share a condensed version here. My presentation was entitled “From Deciding to Sell to Sold.”

The first step in deciding to sell is to think about where you are in life. Maybe you own your first home, and you need a bigger house for a growing family. Maybe you have a large home, and your children are grown. It may be time to downsize and purchase a smaller house. Wherever you are in life, it is important to really think about what you need moving forward. Often though, sellers do not have a choice in selling as they may be moving for a job, due to a foreclosure, or divorce, or even death.

What is the local market like where your property is located? Is it a buyer’s market or a seller’s market? Maybe it is not the right time to sell. In a seller’s market, you can expect numerous showings and perhaps multiple offers. In a buyer’s market, it could be difficult to generate an offer on your house, at least one close to the price you want. The type of market where you live will factor in the value of your home.

Pricing your home is extremely important. Considering comparable sales, or “comps,” is essential in determining the value of your property. You want to think like an appraiser and use homes that are of similar style and age, with similar finishes, close in proximity to your own home. A 4,000 square foot two story home does not compare to a 1,600 square foot ranch.

Once you are ready to list, you want to think like a prospective buyer when preparing your home for the market. What would you like to see when viewing a home to purchase? Is there any deferred maintenance that you need to take care of as a homeowner? Any touch ups like fresh paint? How does your flooring look? Fresh paint, landscaping and pressure washing are all good returns on your investment as a seller. In order to obtain top dollar, you need to have your home in excellent condition when it hits the market for sale.

Hopefully, this gives you a little insight into the process of deciding to sell your home, timing, pricing and preparing the property for the market. An experienced Realtor can consult with you and guide you every step of the way.
