Ten years ago this summer, I asked my then-16-year-old to visit local businesses and see if they would be willing to carry a new publication in their stores. As I recall, he came back with 40 that said yes that first day.

We were in the midst of creating what would be called The Paper. It was something I had thought about for a long time. We wanted The Paper to focus on one thing for readers - give me something to do. And that “do” was local food joints, live local music and everything fun and interesting that was going on.

Flash forward and we are at the printing plant in Opelika waiting for the first papers to come off. I think it was 28 pages. I do know we were taking a risk. When I talked about starting a newspaper 10 years ago, everyone thought I was nuts.

Newnan Porchfest’s new date: August 22
After the heartbreak of having to postpone, we are so grateful to get another chance to bring this day back to life. This event means the world to us, and we know it means a lot to this community too. So, let’s get ready for Newnan’s biggest day in music! Right now, we are working with our bands, vendors, porch hosts, and community partners to see who is available and able to be part of the rescheduled date. As you can imagine, moving an event this big is no small thing, but we are doing everything we can to keep the heart and magic of Newnan Porchfest intact. We’ll be back with porches full of music, streets full of vendors, local food, art, community, and all the little things that make Porchfest feel like Porchfest. Basically, we’re going to pretend like it’s May in August! Kids’ activities will still be available at ChildrenConnect, so families can still look forward to a fun, welcoming space for children to enjoy during the festival. We will also be selling the original Newnan Porchfest t-shirts and collectible posters at the event. These were printed for our original date and feature the original lineup. Any new bands added to the August 22nd lineup will not be included on the t-shirts, which honestly makes them a pretty special little time capsule of this wild year. VIP tickets will transfer to the new date. If you already purchased VIP tickets, you are all set for August 22nd. Your tickets will still include all of the VIP perks, including: H VIP breakfast H VIP parking H Private restrooms H VIP garden stops H Drink tickets and more! If you haven’t purchased your VIP tickets yet but are interested in doing so, we are currently working with our event software company to reopen tickets for August 22nd. continued from page 1 That first run was 1,500 copies as I recall. The content was new, but all the ads were pulled from our sister publication, The Coweta Shopper. So one could say a somewhat large financial risk. But we had to have something to show advertisers.
The goal was to distribute as many as we could and just mail what we had to. The exact oppositive of The Shopper. We wanted to be in coffee shops and libraries and any place where people had to wait - and would pick up The Paper to read. We were about readership, or the number of eyes on the content and ads.
Flash, Flash Forward: This summer we celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Paper. We went up to 10,000 copies and more than 125 locations. Every first week of the month, we get together at the post office and load up, literally, hundreds of bundles of The Paper to distribute all over Coweta County and surrounding areas.
So a perfect time to thank our readers who, well, continue to read us. To our advertisers who keep us in business we just want to say thank. And finally to the staff and writers and photographers who, for over the last 10 years, have made this publication - THE Paper. And we want to give back for all the support. Piedmont Newnan Hospital Honored Cancer Survivors
In honor of Cancer Survivors Month, Piedmont Newnan proudly recognized the strength, resilience and courage of cancersurvivors in our local communities. An event was held to celebrate their journey, honor their stories and reaffirm Piedmont’s commitment to providing compassionate, high-quality care to all those affected by cancer. Piedmont Newnan’s Thomas. F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Center hosted a Cancer Survivor Celebration at the hospital on Wednesday, June 3 to celebrate survivors and connect with the community. Nearly 40 cancer survivors attended the event and enjoyed lunch and music from Pete Fodero on the Bistro patio. The event brought cancer survivors together for an afternoon to reflect on their journey, share their experiences with other survivors, and thank those who have supported them along the way.

Chapman Family Cancer Wellness. “Through all of our classes and events, the patients and instructors have really become a family in Cancer Wellness. This event gave us an opportunity to all get together at once to eat, dance and talk in a fun setting! It is one of the highlights of the year and a great way to celebrate Cancer Survivor Month!” The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation defines a survivor as anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. According to the American Cancer Society, there are more than 480,000 cancer survivors in Georgia. The Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness program at Piedmont Newnan offers a variety of free support services and programs to help patients and survivors with the physical, mental and emotional effects of cancer. Massage, yoga, cooking demonstrations and support groups are among the 21 current offerings at Cancer Wellness. Monthly attendance averages between 450 and 500 interactions per month, and there have been over 4,400 encounters with local cancer survivors already this fiscal year. As a not-for-profit hospital, Piedmont Newnan relies on the generosity of donors to offer many programs and advanced medical technology to the community. Tell us one thing about yourself that few people know. Steve: As a senior in high school, I came in 3rd place in 1 meter springboard diving in the State Meet and was a diver in my first year of college. Marie: One thing people don’t know….I really struggled as a student, college was so difficult, I vowed never to return to school after graduation and I have kept that vow. You are hosting a dinner party for six. What five people, living or dead, would you invite and why. Steve: Steve Martin - We have to have some humor. Matthieu Richard - Buddhist monk who wrote Altruism: The Power of Compassion to Change Yourself and the World. Abraham Lincoln - dealing with hard challenges. Isaac Newton - the greatest scientist who ever lived. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks - philosopher, author, TED Talks. Marie: Dinner party, my great grandparents who came from the Ukraine, 4 of them and my grandmother because I miss her. Name an as-yet unfulfilled dream. Steve: Visiting the Galapagos Islands and Antarctica.
Briefly describe yourself and what you do/did. Steve: I am a longtime Newnan resident. I moved here with my family 40 years ago, and with Marie, raised our family on College Street. We moved to the county in 2007. I am a husband, Dad to Matthew and Jennifer, and grandfather to Eleanor and Henry (Washington DC), and Baxley (Newnan). I have a wonderful son-in-law, Toby, and daughter-in-law, Orren. Right now, I am a Catholic Deacon, Board Member at the Samaritan Clinic, Member of the Coweta Public Facilities Authority, Bailiff in the Superior Court, Poll Manager at Panther Creek, volunteer, community supporter, and helping the fight to prevent the rezoning of Rural Conservation land for data centers. I am also a golfer and banjo player with the Straynotes. Prior to my “retirement,” I was the CEO of The Rubicon Group, a company that served the travel industry, helping them determine and set prices to maximize revenue. My start in that field was in 1982 when I oversaw the development of Delta Air Lines’ first Revenue Management System. At the time we sold Rubicon, we had over 18,000 customers worldwide, and I had around 4 million miles on Delta (not to mention many miles on other airlines). Marie: Marie Swope, eldest of eight. BBA in marketing from Georgia State University. Married to Steve Swope. Mother of two successful children and grandmother of three grandchildren. I worked for many years at Delta Airlines as an analyst in Properties and Facilities and Legal. Currently a full-time volunteer as a mentor for Elevate Coweta Students and the Samaritan Clinic. I am also on the foundation board of West Georgia Technical College and Stepping Stones. Proud Coweta Citizen of the year, 2019. Best piece of advice you’ve received. Steve: Treat other people well. If they work for you or even if they don’t, always try to be kind, firm and fair.
Marie: Being tall and thin. If you weren’t doing what you are, you would be … Steve: A professional golfer on the Champions Tour (dream on). Marie: If I wasn’t doing what I am doing, I would love to live in NYC for a year and go to a different play and restaurant every day. Your go-to food. Steve: Steak, medium, grilled out. Marie: Anything sweet, especially cookies from Natalia’s Cake House. Favorite movies(s) … Steve: Saving Private Ryan, Young Frankenstein, Caddyshack, Casablanca, The Godfather. Marie: I am not much of a movie person, but I did love Grease. Dogs or cats? Steve: Even though we have owned cats for a long time, I have to say dogs. Marie: Cats, they are so incredibly independent but so interesting.
Marie: Because I am a worrier, Everything will be OK in the end, if it’s not OK it is not the end.
Your favorite quote and why.
If I had it to do over …
Steve: Jesus: “If you love me you will keep my commandments.” Because the Christian life is guided by love of God, and we show that love by keeping his commandments, which were: Love God with all your mind, all your heart, and all your strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.
Steve: I would have started my company (Rubicon) five years earlier. It was the best professional experience of my life, thanks to the good people at the company and the good customers. I was miserable in my job for the five years leading up to starting Rubicon.
Marie: Love tenderly, act justly and walk humbly with God. It’s a great measurement for living a productive life.
Marie: If I could do it over, I wouldn’t. My life has been wonderful.
Name something that you are extremely glad you did or accomplished.
You are going on an extended solo trip. What three albums and three books would you take?
Marie: I am so glad I stuck college out and graduated and very proud of accomplishing 48 years of marriage.
Steve: For albums it’s really hard because I like a lot of different music. I guess I would pick: Leonard Cohen - Live in London, Jimmy Buffett - Essentials, The Highwaymen - The Essential Highwaymen. For books, that is even harder since I love to read. So rather than list three that I have read, here are three I have purchased and would take with me: Take Me to Your Leader - Neil deGrasse Tyson, The Gales of November - John U. Bacon (currently reading), and American Struggle - Jon Meacham. Marie: Going on a trip, albums anything by Elton John, I own most of his vinyl going back to 1974. Books, I
Steve: Aside from my marriage and family, I would say having the courage and support to start and run Rubicon.
What advice would you give your younger self just starting out on your own? Steve: Don’t be in such a damn hurry. You have a lot of time ahead of you; take more time to enjoy what is right in front of you. Marie: The advice I would give my younger self is to be patient, not everything has to happen at once, and waiting for success is a virtue, not a vice.

Mortgage Rates – A Historical Perspective
If you ask anyone involved in real estate how the market is, you are likely to hear something regarding mortgage rates and how they have recently risen, instead of falling. This is certainly part of the reason the 2026 real estate market has been sluggish. At the time of writing, mortgage rates are averaging around 6.5%. Compared to the time of COVID (March 2020) and the time shortly after, this is a high rate. With a little perspective, we can see that 6.5% is much closer to average, even a little lower, historically.

A mortgage payment in June of 1982, with very good credit, five percent down, at $69,300, 16.5% interest, in Newnan, would estimate to be around $1,258 a month (including taxes and insurance). This is nearly half of what a payment today would be at 1/6 of the sales price. The mortgage, or interest rate, is a very powerful factor in the real estate market. The bigger issue today is how the cost of everything, along with prices, has increased dramatically since 1982. If you are waiting for rates to drop back to the two and three percent range again to purchase, you will likely never see that. With a little perspective, you may discover that it may not be a bad time to purchase after all. I would suggest centering your decision to purchase, if possible, on other factors like where you are in your life, job, family, lifestyle, etc. rather than based on mortgage rates and predictions. Through his accounting and business advisory work, he has a strong background in investments and commercial real estate but also loves land and residential. Yamaha celebrates 2026 Scholarship Recipients Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America (YMMC) recently awarded a total of $25,000 in college scholarships to students who are children or dependents of full-time YMMC employees. The annual scholarship program was created to support the educational goals of employees’ children as the pursue postsecondary education. This year, 10 students were selected to receive scholarships through the program. YMMC’s scholarship program is funded through the company’s recycling fund, which turns everyday sustainability efforts into meaningful support. Through the recycling fund, materials collected through YMMC’s recycling initiatives help provide scholarship opportunities for students to continue their education. “Each year, this scholarship program gives us a chance to recognize outstanding students and the Yamaha families who have supported them along the way,” said Bob Brown, President and CEO of YMMC. “These recipients have worked hard to reach this point, and we are proud to celebrate their accomplishments. We are excited to see what they achieve in the future and the positive impact they will make as future leaders in our community.” YMMC’s scholarship program began in 2002. Since its start, the company has awarded 207 scholarships totaling more than $500,000 to help students further their education. As Enola prepares to marry Lord Tewkesbury, she must investigate the disappearance of her brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill). While viewers follow the mystery, many will also wonder whether marriage means Enola will retain the Holmes name. Hamnet (July 6) – l Fix Rating 8/10 – Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao (see “Nomadland”) directs this take on the origins of the famous Bard William Shakespeare and the personal tragedy that helped shape the classic play “Hamlet.” Jessie Buckley won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Shakespeare’s wife in this riveting exploration of grief. The film is less interested in literary trivia than in the way private pain can become public art. HBO Max delivers its expected combination of prestige series, theatrical premieres, and engaging documentaries. The Man Will Burn (June 21) — This fourpart HBO documentary traces the origins and continuing endurance of the Burning Man festival. Other films have covered this ground, but HBO’s involvement should ensure prestige handling of the edgy subject, with striking cinematography and focused reporting. 7/10 — This effective adaptation of Stephen King’s
“Bachman” 1979 novel stays true to the source material almost to a fault. The devastating story is nearly too heavy to be entertaining. However, under director Francis Lawrence’s stewardship, the movie remains faithful to the book while introducing, dare I say, entertaining elements. The narrative follows Ray Garraty (Cooper Hoffman), who participates in a national endurance test controlled by the vicious The Major (Mark Hamill). To win, you must continuously walk until everyone around you dies or is killed. That grim premise gives the film its power, even if it also makes the experience difficult to shake.
Peacock’s July lineup offers insightful womencentered drama. The Five-Star Weekend (July 9) — This series adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s bestseller features an ensemble cast led by Jennifer Garner, along with Regina Hall, Chloë Sevigny, and D’Arcy Carden. Garner plays Hollis Shaw, a celebrity chef whose carefully planned life begins to fall apart during a
reunion weekend getaway with four friends from different stages in life. This appears to be is comfort viewing with teeth: pretty locations, complicated relationships, and just enough emotional mess to keep the glossy surface from getting too slick. Reminders of Him (July 10) — The feature version of Colleen Hoover’s novel lands on the small screen after its successful theatrical release in March. While not the blockbuster hit Hoover saw with “It Ends with Us,” the modestly budgeted production proved that the writer’s material lives on even as the controversy surrounding the first film ground to an unceremonious halt. “Reminders of Him” is an unconventional romance that follows a young mother named Kenna Rowan (Maika Monroe), who attempts to reconnect with her daughter after being released from prison.
King of the Hill (Season 15, July 20) — Hulu drops all ten episodes of the revival of the animated sensation that began in 1997 and restarted last year. Hank and Peggy cope with retirement while their son Bobby continues to advance as an entrepreneur. Hulu has already greenlit seasons 16 and 17, so viewers can be reassured that the Hill story will live on. For fans, the appeal is not just nostalgia; it is the pleasure of returning to characters who somehow feel both frozen in time and oddly current.

Summer Movie Express at Regal Animation and sharks lead Disney’s streaming month. X-Men ‘97 (July 1) — The first three episodes of this popular animated series drop on July 1. This acclaimed show revived the classic series from the 1990s and effectively relaunched the evocative material by expanding the original story. In season 2, the X-Men are forced to confront rising antimutant sentiment while combating the villain Apocalypse. Word is strong on this one. Sharkfest (July 5) — Dropping at the end of the Fourth of July weekend, National Geographic rolled out shark documentaries that include “Hammerhead Sharks Up Close with Bertie Gregory,” “World’s Biggest Mako,” and “Shark vs. Giant Croc.” Our fascination and fear of these hunters of the deep will never end. Bottom Line: July’s streaming slate is not built around one giant title. Instead, it spreads the wealth. Netflix has the strongest one-two punch with “Enola Holmes 3” and “Hamnet,” Apple TV+ may have the sleekest new series with “Lucky,” Peacock offers smart adult drama, Hulu brings back a beloved animated institution, and Disney+ leans into superheroes and sharks. If viewers are looking for a place to start, “Hamnet,” “The Long Walk,” “The Five-Star Weekend,” and “Lucky” should move to the top of the queue.
