Ten years ago this summer, I asked my then-16-year-old to visit local businesses and see if they would be willing to carry a new publication in their stores. As I recall, he came back with 40 that said yes that first day.

The fact that I told Caleb I would pay him $1 per store served as a good incentive, I guess.
We were in the midst of creating what would be called The Paper. It was something I had thought about for a long time. We wanted The Paper to focus on one thing for readers - give me something to do. And that “do” was local food joints, live local music and everything fun and interesting that was going on.

Flash forward and we are at the printing plant in Opelika waiting for the first papers to come off. I think it was 28 pages. I do know we were taking a risk. When I talked about starting a newspaper 10 years ago, everyone thought I was nuts.
