Lifelong resident of Senoia Ellis Crook passed away June 22 of this year at the age of 95.

There was a huge gathering for the road sign dedication. Family and friends, Senator Matt Brass, and other dignitaries celebrated the placement of the sign just outside Crooks Marketplace Ellis Crook Highway … a section of Highway 16 from Broad Street to the round-a-bout at Highway 16 / Highway 54 in Turin.

Notes from Perry Street

Decades ago, the Peter Principle appeared.

Basically, it states that employees tend to be promoted to their level of incompetence.

I recently reached that level of incompetence with automobiles.

I buy a car and drive it until, well, I obviously need another one. To date, I have never owned a vehicle with one of those big screens on the front console that can do the whole map thing, backup camera and satellite radio.

The LBD has the camera thing. My truck does not. It’s a truck and does truck things without all those bells and whistles that, I am learning, everyone now has. Anyway, said truck had to go to the shop for a problem no one could figure out. And it was taking some time.

The problem was The Paper was coming out in a couple of days, and I usually have 7,000 or so copies loaded up in there. So we talked with the nice rental car people, who did not have any trucks or large Suburbans or anything adequate to carry and deliver 7,000 or so copies of The Paper.

And then they mentioned the mini-van. Apparently these “mini-vans” that no male would be caught dead in, are now all the rage. And it was huge and could handle 7,000 copies of The Paper.

A reminder: I drove old trucks. This is a brand new black mini-van. I get in and the nice rental car manager starts going over “a few things.” And I am like, yes, it is a car, well, a mini-van, and I can handle it.

Keys please? Apparently, there are no keys. Huh? No, you push a button … make sure you press the brake in … and that starts the car. But I have to have this control device in the car, which serves to, well, make the damn mini-van fly or something. I can start the car remotely, open all the windows, the back door, side doors and many other things I just did not have time to learn.

So the nice rental manager pats me on the shoulder and says enjoy or something, and I am ready. I push in the brake. I push the little button to start the engine. Ta da! I reach for the gear shift and …

It is not where it is supposed to be, right in the middle console between the driver and front passenger seats. Okay, we have gone back to gear shifts on the actual steering wheel?

No.

There is no way I am about to go back inside and ask them how to put a car in drive. This is embarrassing. And then I notice the “knob.” Said knob it about 1.5 inches in diameter and is has P, R, N, D, D1 on it. So I just turn it to D, and the damn car is ready to go.

Lesson 1 learned.

This stud muffin chick magnet mini-van also has “safety systems.” Like alarms go off and lights blink and the radio says “YOU MAY DIE” because another vehicle gets too close. I nearly wrecked.

Lesson 2 learned.

I never figured out the radio. The AC was hit and miss. At least I could figure out how to roll down the windows.

I was explaining my troubles to my kids and their respective mates and some more of the younger generation. I was getting abused. You didn’t know this, that, or whatever?

No, I do not.

But I can drive a standard shift very, very well. A what? They all say in unison. Small victory. And here is a rotary phone. Call me for your tuition.

Until next time

The Interview with BTG’s Grace Rodriguez

Briefly describe yourself and what you do/did.

I’m Grace Rodriguez, the Deputy Director of BTG Community Outreach. Every day I have the privilege of helping connect people with food, resources, and hope while helping build programs and partnerships that strengthen our community. Outside of work, I’m a proud mom to my daughter, Leilani, and I genuinely believe that loving people well can change lives.

Best piece of advice you’ve received.

Don’t be afraid to take up space. You don’t have to shrink yourself to make other people comfortable.

If I had it to do over…

I would spend less time worrying about what everyone else thought of me and more time

enjoying the season I was in. Life moves a lot faster than we realize.

You are going on an extended solo trip. What three albums and three books would you take?

Albums:

• Born Sinner J. Cole

• My Beautiful Dark Twisted Enemy Kanye West

• The Art of Loving Olivia Dean Books:

• The Perks of Being a Wallflower Stephen Chbosky

• Where the Crawdads Sing Delia Owens

• Stuff I’ve Been Feeling Lately Alicia Cook

Tell us one thing about yourself that few people know.

A fun fact about me is that I love writing poetry. It’s one of the ways I make sense of the world and turn life’s experiences into something meaningful.

You are hosting a dinner party for six. What five people, living or dead, would you invite and why?

• Selena Quintanilla – She embodied joy, humility, and authenticity. Despite her incredible success, she remained grounded, and I’d love to hear how she balanced ambition with staying true to herself.

• My mom – There are so many conversations we never got to have. I’d love one more evening to hear her stories, ask for her advice, and simply spend time with her.

• Marcus Aurelius – His writings on resilience, discipline, and finding peace in the face of hardship have stood the test of time. I’d love to hear how he viewed leadership, purpose, and navigating life’s challenges.

• Maya Angelou – Her wisdom, grace, and ability to turn pain into powerful words have always inspired me. I’d love to learn from the way she viewed courage, kindness, and humanity.

• J. Cole – Beyond his music, I admire his thoughtfulness, humility, and willingness to speak honestly about life, success, and social issues. I think he’d bring a grounded perspective and meaningful conversation to the table.

Name an as yet unfulfilled dream.

I’d love to build a legacy of service that inspires my daughter to believe she can make a difference too. Professionally, I hope to continue growing a graduation program that allows our clients to find stability in their restoration.

Favorite movie(s).

Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse

Dogs or cats?

Cats, I’m actually scared of big dogs. My daughter also really loves cats.

Your favorite quote and why. “Be the reason someone believes there is still good in the world.”

It’s simple, but it reminds me that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a lasting impact.

Name something that you are extremely glad you did or accomplished.

Choosing to step into leadership, even when I wasn’t sure I was ready. It has stretched me, challenged me, and showed me I’m capable of far more than I ever gave myself credit for.

What advice would you give your younger self just starting out on their own?

Give yourself more grace. You’re going to make mistakes, change your mind, outgrow people, and start over more than once and that’s okay. None of those things mean you’ve failed. They mean you’re growing. Keep showing up, keep loving people well, and don’t lose your sense of humor, even when life gets messy. 

More Than a Gala: How the COSF Snow Ball Brings Aspen Together

Every winter, Aspen becomes a gathering place for some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs, philanthropists, entertainers, and tastemakers. But for one remarkable evening, status takes a back seat to something far more human.

The Aspen Snow Ball, benefiting COSF (Children’s Oncology Support Fund) has grown into far more than a glamorous gala on the social calendar. Yes, guests arrive in black-tie elegance, and the setting feels like something out of a dream—snow falling softly outside (well not this year, it was 70 degrees…but for story telling purposes let’s continue), candlelight glowing inside—but what lingers long after the night ends is not the spectacle. It is the feeling in the room. A feeling of unity, of purpose, of people showing up for something bigger than themselves.

There is no denying the beauty of the evening. Aspen’s mountain backdrop, the refined atmosphere, and the unmistakable energy of a room filled with global influence create a sense of occasion that is rare even among the world’s most exclusive events. But what truly defines the Snow Ball is not what people wear or who they are—it is how fully they give themselves to the cause once they arrive.

Throughout the night, live performances transform the ballroom into something almost cinematic. Acclaimed musicians and surprise guest artists take the stage, not simply to entertain, but to move the room. At moments, the energy is electric—uplifting, celebratory, alive. At others, it becomes deeply emotional, as strippedback performances quiet the space and remind everyone why they are there in the first place. These are not just sets between speeches; they are shared experiences that connect every person in the room to the mission.

One of the most memorable moments of the weekend came after a performance by The Fray In the post-show energy, I met Joe King briefly and complimented him on his set. He noticed my sunglasses, loved them immediately, and in a spontaneous moment, I ended up giving them to him. What made it even more surreal was that he continued wearing them throughout the entire weekend—every time I saw him around Aspen, there they were. It became this unexpected, lighthearted thread woven through an otherwise deeply emotional few days. And in those moments, the noise of the outside world disappears. What remains is presence.

Perhaps that is what makes the Snow Ball so powerful. In a world where attention is fragmented and causes compete for visibility, this event creates something increasingly rare: collective focus. Everyone in the room is aligned, even if they arrived from entirely different worlds.

Aspen itself plays a quiet but important role in that. The town has long been more than a destination—it is a meeting point for people who care deeply about impact. Over time, it has cultivated a culture where philanthropy is not an accessory to lifestyle, but part of its foundation. The Snow Ball reflects that identity in its purest form.

None of it, however, would exist without the organizers. Behind the scenes, an extraordinary team works with precision, care, and an almost invisible sense of devotion. Every detail is intentional—from the flow of the evening to the emotional arc of the program. Their work is not just logistical; it is deeply human. They are not simply producing an event—they are holding space for generosity, grief, hope, and action to exist in the same room.

And they do it seamlessly.

It is this combination of vision and execution that allows the Snow Ball to feel effortless on the surface, even though it is anything but. The result is an evening where nothing feels forced, yet everything feels meaningful.

As the night unfolds, the performances, stories, and moments of reflection build into something larger than entertainment. They become reminders—sometimes subtle, sometimes overwhelming—of what is at stake. And in response, the generosity in the room is immediate and instinctive. People do not hesitate. They respond with open hands and open hearts.

In a world filled with charity galas, the COSF Aspen Snow Ball stands apart not because of its scale or its guest list, but because of its emotional clarity. It is not an event people simply attend. It is an experience they feel part of.

A community that forms, dissolves, and reforms each year—but is always bound by the same purpose. By the end of the evening, what remains is not the memory of a performance or a photograph or a name on a seating chart. It is something quieter and more lasting: the sense that, for one night in Aspen, people came together and truly saw one another—not as celebrities or donors or organizers, but as participants in something deeply, urgently human.

And that is what carries forward long after the lights go down and the sunglasses come off.

The MUSIC … Local&Live

Newnan‘s Kris Youmans Band has a unique rootsy, country sound with a bit of Western swing that makes them a perfect edition to GPB’s Georgia’s Country Connection series at GPB.org/Country

We are fortunate she writes The Music column for us at The Paper.

Featured Artist … Mike Manocchi

The Beatles drew the ear of Mike Manocchi toward music the way they did millions of other young listeners, but Mike listened deeper. After his introduction to guitar icons like Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix, Manocchi also discovered players like Steve Lukather and Larry Carlton, and great session acts like the Swampers and the MGs. His deep hunger for musical knowledge led to a technical prowess he’s been perfecting for nearly 30 years, and has made him a respected Atlanta name, both with HIGHWAY 54 and Indigo Road.

Mike is from L.A. but his true music inspiration came after moving to Atlanta to be near his parents. Here is where he met the musicians that helped to form the two bands Hwy 54 &Indigo Rd.

You can hear both of these Bands -Highway 54 & Indigo Road at local venues in Coweta, Fayette & surrounding areas.

Newnan Porchfest’s August 22

After the heartbreak of having to postpone, we are so grateful to get another chance to bring this day back to life. This event means the world to us, and we know it means a lot to this community too.

So, let’s get ready for Newnan’s biggest day in music!

We’ll be back with porches full of music, streets full of vendors, local food, art, community, and all the little things that make Porchfest feel like Porchfest.

Activities for the little ones will be available at Temple Ave.’s ChildrenConnect Museum, so families can look forward to a fun, welcoming space for children to enjoy during the festival.

We will also be selling the original Newnan Porchfest t-shirts and collectible posters at the event. These were printed for our original date and feature the original lineup. Any new bands added to the August 22nd lineup will not be included on the t-shirts, which honestly makes them a pretty special little time capsule of this wild year.

VIP tickets will transfer to the new date.

If you already purchased VIP tickets, you are all set for August 22nd. Your tickets will still include all of the VIP perks, including: H VIP breakfast H VIP parking H Private restrooms H VIP garden stops H Drink tickets and more!

Back-to-School Shouldn’t Break the Bank—But for Many Families, It Does.

 51% of parents say the cost of back-to-school is their #1 stressor.

 Families spend an average of $570 per child—and up to $875 for high schoolers—just to prepare for the school year.

 In the past 4 years, the cost of school supplies has skyrocketed by 24%.

 Half of parents say they would go into debt for school supplies or extracurriculars so their child can feel confident and fit in.

At Abby’s Angels Foundation, we believe every child deserves to start the school year with the tools they need to succeed—without adding stress to their families.

 That’s why we stock and restock Abby’s Closets at 53+ local schools—all year long—making sure students have the supplies they need, not just in August, but whenever they need them.

 For a child, new supplies aren’t just things—they’re a fresh start, a sense of belonging, and the confidence to take ownership of their learning.

 When a student enters Abby’s Closet they are welcomed with colorful inspiration and friendship. Abby loved her school and shopping for school supplies excited for each school year. She especially LOVED her time with friends. Abby’s Closets embody Abby’s spirit and personality. Each space is uniquely Abby and her living legacy.

Join Newnan Coweta History Center and local historian celebrities Steve Quesinberry and Winston Skinner! Quesinberry discusses the expansive history of Newnan High School in, “Flagship.” And Winston Skinner goes waaaaaay back in time to one-room schoolhouses, outlining the progression of education in our county to what it is today. Skinner will hit highlights from the book “Coweta School Days.” Books available for purchase and signing. Refreshment reception begins at 5:30pm; program 6 to 7pm. Real Estate

Land in Coweta County

When people discuss real estate, we often think and talk about residential real estate and homes. That is a significant part of real estate, but does not cover it all. Land, commercial, and multifamily are all important sectors of real estate. Land has been a hot topic of discussion in Coweta County lately. Land prices here are the highest they have ever been. Between data centers, residential and commercial developments, and large homes on acreage, land in our county is in high demand!

Our office has been part of some large land deals this year. We had a 240-unit multifamily deal in South Fulton, Fairburn, bringing $350,000 an acre for raw land. Another home in northeast Coweta, on 25 acres, sold for over $1,500,000 to a home builder and developer that plans to build high-end homes on the property. South Coweta, particularly the Moreland area, is also highly desirable. We sold a beautiful custom home on 50 acres for over $1,500,000 in south Moreland.

All these transactions are different examples of different types of buyers purchasing land and homes on acreage. But the hottest topic right now is data centers. These data center companies pay substantial prices for land as the real estate purchase is only a small part of their developmental costs. 505.49 +/acres sold on Welcome to Sargent Rd in rural west Coweta sold for $6,500,000 in 2024 per the Coweta County Tax Assessor.

This is part of the location of the contentious Project Sail development. This is a huge transaction in Coweta County, but when you consider the scale and cost of a $17 billion data center development, you wonder if the seller could have received more for the land? The sale, on this tax parcel, comes out to almost $13,000 an acre, which is slightly above market for raw land in that area, especially with a large power easement occupying usable land on the property.

Our office was part of another large land sale back in 2024. This property would go on to be part of the proposed Project Oak data center site just a couple years later. 847 Walt Sanders Rd in North Newnan sold for $10,504,040 or over $41,000 an acre on May 9th, 2024.

I don’t know if this buyer had a data center in mind when they purchased this tract, but these data center developers are eying properties like this across Coweta County. The commissioners of Coweta County approved a 180-day data center moratorium at their June 16th meeting. The moratorium will allow the commissioners and staff to review their data center ordinance. I don’t see the demand for data centers in our county going anywhere, however, especially when the developers can offer landowners huge prices. Jess Barron is an Associate Broker with Lindsey’s Inc. Piedmont Newnan Honored 24 Nurses at Residency Program Celebration

A total of 24 registered nurses from the Summer 2025 cohort completed the enhanced Nurse Residency Program, and were recently recognized at a celebration.

“We’re proud to celebrate our Summer 2025 cohort of nurse residents as they graduate from our comprehensive transition-to-practice program,” said Krysten Johnson, MSN, RN, Nurse Residency Coordinator at Piedmont Newnan. “These 24 dedicated nurses are now ready to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care – and make a positive difference in every life they touch.”

Piedmont’s Transition to Practice Nurse Residency Program is a formal, structured, evidence-based, 12-month program designed to foster Piedmont nurses who are competent, confident, and committed clinicians who practice evidence-based care. Through learning and clinical experiences with preceptors, ongoing support from experienced educators, mentors and leadership, the residents are integrated into a culture that prioritizes and supports their growth. At their graduation from the program each nurse resident is asked to select a topic they are passionate about that links evidence-based care to practice outcomes. They conduct a literary search, develop a PICO question, create a background summary, report a summary statement based on analysis and outcomes based off their literary searches.

“The goal of the program is to enhance the onboarding and residency experience of our new graduate nurses beyond just skill acquisition to address the array of challenges in the transition from student nurse to competent, confident practitioner,” said Johnson.

Piedmont Nationally Recognized for High-Quality Stroke and Diabetes Care

Piedmont Healthcare has been recognized by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for demonstrating commitment to following the latest research-based guidelines for the treatment of stroke and diabetes, ultimately leading to more lives saved, shorter recovery times and fewer hospital readmissions. Overall, Piedmont received 35 awards across its 28-hospital system.

Piedmont Newnan Hospital received the Get With The Guidelines®Stroke Gold Plus Award, with Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll.

“Piedmont Newnan is honored to be recognized for our dedication to helping stroke patients have the best possible chance of survival and quality of life,” said Maria Willis, stroke manager at Piedmont Newnan. “Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke, and it is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the U.S.”

Two out of three people with diabetes die from heart disease or stroke.

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die.

It’s important to “BE FAST” as early detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and speeding up recovery time:

B: Balance— watch for dizziness or loss of balance

E: Eyes— check for vision loss or double vision

F: Face— look for an uneven smile

A: Arm— check if one arm is weak

S: Speech— listen for slurred speech

T: Time— call 911 at the first sign of a stoke

Get With The Guidelines put the expertise of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest evidence and research-based guidelines. As a participant in both programs, Piedmont qualified for the awards by demonstrating how the organization has committed to improving quality care. Studies show patients can recover better when providers consistently follow treatment guidelines.

Capsule Reviews … Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/

August streaming is less about one dominant title than a collection of recognizable brands, returning favorites, genre experiments, and a pair of theatrical releases finding a second life at home. The major services are spreading their bets across horror, prestige science fiction, political drama, romantic comedy, superheroes, and several dependable series.

Netflix leans on a pair of original thrillers, one built around a trapped family and the other around a missing child and a dangerous criminal legacy.

The Last House (August 7) — Louis Leterrier, the filmmaker behind “The Incredible Hulk” and “Fast X,” directs this high-concept horror thriller starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura. They play the parents of a family of four who wake up to discover that their home has been sealed from the outside. With supplies dwindling and no obvious way to escape, the setup promises a mixture of survival drama, supernatural mystery, and the kind of domestic tension that gets worse when everyone is trapped together.

The Whisper Man (August 28) — This adaptation of Alex North’s bestselling novel assembles an unusually strong cast for a serial-killer thriller. Adam Scott plays a widowed crime writer (see Scott playing another troubled writer in the solid horror film “Hokum” released earlier this year) whose young son disappears, forcing him to seek help from his estranged father, a retired detective played by Robert De Niro. The elder man once put away the killer now connected to the abduction. Michael Keaton, Michelle Monaghan, John Carroll Lynch, Hamish Linklater, and Owen Teague round out the impressive ensemble.

Prime Video keeps one of its most reliable action franchises moving while shifting Jack Reacher into a darker urban mystery.

Reacher (Season 4, August 12) — Alan Ritchson returns as Lee Child’s enormous wandering investigator in a season based on the novel “Gone Tomorrow.” Reacher witnesses a woman acting suspiciously on a late-night New York subway train shortly before her death. What first looks like suicide opens into a conspiracy involving government secrets, an NYPD detective, and the

victim’s brother. The series works best when its uncomplicated hero is dropped into a complicated mystery, and this season’s neo-noir setup sounds like a good fit. Use of Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” in the season 4 trailer is a nice touch!

Apple’s August slate brings back its most beloved comedy and one of its more ambitious sciencefiction shows.

Ted Lasso (Season 4, August 5) — Jason Sudeikis returns, after ending with season 3 in 2026, to Richmond for a new assignment that gives the warmhearted comedy a needed change of formation. Ted is now coaching a second-division women’s football team, where he and the players must learn to take chances before they feel fully prepared. Reviving this beloved series after what felt like a natural ending is a big risk. However, a fresh roster and a different corner of the sport could keep the show from merely replaying its old formula. “Football is life?” Coach Beard asks one of the players in the trailer. “No, life is so much more than football,” she responds. “Not as catchy, but true,” observes Lasso.

Dark Matter (Season 2, August 28) — The first season adapted Blake Crouch’s novel about Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a Chicago physicist abducted into an alternate version of his life. After fighting through a maze of realities, Jason and his family appeared to find safety. Naturally, that peace will not last. Season 2 sends the Dessens running again as the consequences of those alternate lives catch up with them. The multiverse concept has become overused, but this series hopes to shift the focus on identity, regret, and the roads not taken.

HBO Max offers the month’s biggest superhero premiere and a theatrical crime thriller that I reviewed earlier this year.

Normal (August 14) – l Fix Rating 5/10 — Bob Odenkirk plays Ulysses Richardson, a drifting lawman who takes a temporary job as the top deputy in a snowbound town hiding an increasingly absurd criminal conspiracy. Director Ben Wheatley gives him shootouts, corrupt officials, and Yakuza trouble, but little of the humor or character chemistry that made the “Nobody” films click. Odenkirk remains watchable, while Lena Headey, Henry Winkler, and Brendan Fletcher suggest a better ensemble movie that never materializes. At 91 minutes, it moves quickly, hits its marks, and exits without leaving much behind.

Lanterns (August 16) — DC Studios moves into prestige television with this eight-episode series starring Kyle Chandler as veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. The two intergalactic law officers investigate a murder in the American heartland, a grounded setup that has been described as a cosmic version of a hardboiled police drama. Kelly Macdonald and Nathan Fillion co-star. After the uneven “Supergirl,” the new DC universe could use a confident smallscreen victory. The latest trailer sure sells the pathos, and having Macdonald and Fillion involved should ensure some sincere, prestige moments.

Hulu’s most interesting August arrivals include a political drama I reviewed this spring and a curious reworking of a familiar “X-Files” feature.

The Wizard of the Kremlin (August 14) – l Fix Rating 6/10 — Paul Dano plays Vadim Baranov, a fictionalized version of Russian political strategist Vladislav Surkov, who helps engineer the rise of Vladimir Putin (Jude Law). Based on Giuliano da Empoli’s historical novel, the film has inherently fascinating material but the wrong filmmaker handling it. Director Olivier Assayas drifts through the decades with a placid approach that drains urgency from a story that should crackle with

danger and intrigue. Dano remains interesting, but the result plays less like a gripping political thriller than a mildly fascinating historical-fiction footnote.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe — Director’s Cut (August 14) — Rumor has it that Creator Chris Carter’s R-rated version of his chilly 2008 feature will hit Hulu this month. The director’s cut is supposed to restore his original vision. Years after leaving the FBI, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are drawn back into a case involving abducted women, a missing federal agent, and a disgraced priest who claims to have psychic visions. The original movie frustrated viewers hoping for extraterrestrial mythology, but a darker and more complete version of its standalone mystery might justify another investigation. Meanwhile, Ryan Coogler has cast Atlanta actress Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel in new X-Files series that’s shooting now.

Peacock has a relatively light month, but its marquee romantic comedy offers attractive scenery and two appealing stars.

You, Me & Tuscany (August 7) — Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page lead this romantic comedy from producer Will Packer. The pairing alone gives Peacock a marketable late-summer escape, with the Italian setting doing much of the atmospheric work. Page has the polished charm required for the genre, while Bailey continues to build a screen career beyond “The Little Mermaid.” If the chemistry works, the movie could be a pleasant piece of comfort viewing before the fall schedules arrive.

The Undeclared War (Season 2, August 27) — The British cyber-thriller returns to the secretive world of the United Kingdom’s Government Communications Headquarters. The first season followed a young analyst confronting a Russian malware attack during a national election. The new season continues the conflict between intelligence agencies, hackers, and statesponsored disinformation. Cyberwar can be difficult to dramatize, but the series strives to show that invisible attacks can have very visible political consequences.

Bottom Line: August offers enough variety to justify keeping several subscriptions active for another month. Netflix has the strongest movie cast with “The Whisper Man,” Apple brings back two proven favorites, and “Lanterns” is HBO Max’s most important swing. Viewers looking for something already tested can sample “Normal” and “The Wizard of the Kremlin,” although both come with reservations. My first choices would be “The Whisper Man,” dad favorite “Reacher,” and, with cautious optimism, “Lanterns.” 
