Newnan Teen Wins Mounted Shooting Competitions

Sixteen-year-old Baylor Mikell just won her latest Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association tournament in Florida, her first win in 2024.

In 2023, her first year in competition, she finished with eight wins under her belt with its elegant winner’s buckle. She is the daughter of Adam Mikell and granddaughter of James Mikell, both residents of Newnan. Her mother Lindsey and stepfather Kevin Pogorzelski live in Turin.

“I appreciate my family,” said Baylor. “It’s because of them that I get to participate in this exciting sport.”

According to their website, the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (C.M.S.A.) supports “the Fastest Growing Equestrian Sport in the Nation. Mounted contestants compete in this fast-action, timed event using two .45-caliber single action revolvers.” The revolvers have shortened barrels and are loaded with a special powder that bursts a balloon when shot from about 12 feet.

The C.M.S.A. has a variety of levels of competition, ranging from

Photos by Baylor Mikell novice levels to the seasoned professional. Children are welcome to participate in a division for 6-to-11-year-olds. The adult division includes everyone from age 12 to 55. Older adults compete in their own Senior Division. Riders start at Level 1 and move to higher levels by winning competitions. It takes four wins to move to the next level. Baylor is at Level 3. Level 6 is the top.

C.M.S.A. is serious about the “cowboy” in its title. Participants are required to wear traditional cowboy clothing and to only use guns like those from the late 1800s. “Single action revolvers must be cocked each time before firing by drawing the hammer back.” Since competition is based on speed, shooting accurately and quickly with such a weapon requires a high degree of skill.

Competition involves shooting balloons while riding at breakneck speed. The object is to shoot all balloons while riding in a fixed pattern. When riders miss a balloon, five seconds is added to their time. The rider who shoots the most balloons in the shortest amount of time is the winner.

Baylor practices riding and shooting at Hidden Treasure Farm near Hogansville. This establishment offers horse boarding and a variety of other services such as horse training and riding lessons. Owner Courtney Chapman taught Baylor to ride and shoot and allows her to ride one of her horses in competitions. Baylor no longer takes riding lessons, but Courtney is still helping her improve her shooting. Baylor “helps out around the barn,” as she puts it. This includes cleaning stalls, plus grooming, bathing, and feeding the horses.

Last December, Adam, James, and Baylor drove 1,100 miles in a motorhome to Amarillo, Texas, for a worldwide championship event. Though Baylor didn’t win prize money, her dad said she performed incredibly well against far more experienced riders.

As one might imagine, Adam Mikell is very proud of Baylor, as is her G-dad James. “Watching your daughter ride and shoot like she does definitely puts a smile on your face,” said Adam. “The Association is full of good people. Competition is based on skill, not age and experience, and it teaches responsibility.”

“Riding and shooting in the C.M.S.A. is more than a sport,” said Baylor. “It’s given me lots of friends from all over the country. We all hang out together and it’s kind of cool.”

Baylor has played softball since she was seven with her father Adam as her team coach until last year when she joined the East Coweta All Star Junior Varsity team. Her dad had high hopes for her future in softball. However, when she decided she wanted to devote her spare time to what she loved most, he supported her without hesitation.

Baylor wants a horse-related career someday, though she has no idea right now of what that might be. However, with her drive and talent and the support of her family, she is bound to be a huge success.◗

Surviving Allergy Season The dreaded yellow film that coats your car, your front porch, your dog and almost anything that remains outside for more than a few minutes is back.

And that can only mean one thing: pollen season, which translates to seasonal allergies for millions of Americans. According to the most recent data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4.1 million people made appointments in 2019 to see a physician as a result of allergic rhinitis, irritation and inflammation of the mucus membrane inside the nose, as the primary diagnosis.

If you are suffering from sneezing, itchy eyes, and nasal congestion and all of the uncomfortable symptoms associated with an increase in the pollen count, you might want to make an appointment with a primary care physician or visit a local urgent care clinic.

Those 4.1 million who made appointments represent just a fraction of people who suffer from seasonal allergies. Per the CDC, 18.9 percent of children younger than 18 suffer from season allergies and 25.7 percent of those 18 and older suffer from seasonal allergies.

Exacerbating conditions for most Georgians is that over 60 percent of the state’s land is made up of pine forests and pine pollen is a prime irritant for those who suffer from seasonal allergies.

“If you’re suffering from allergies and need relief or are wondering whether or not it is a cold, a visit with your doctor can pinpoint what steps to take next,” said William Courson, D.O., who specializes in family medicine, at Piedmont Physicians at Premier Medical in Newnan. “Meeting with a physician in a virtual visit will keep you safe and comfortable, and can be more convenient for those constantly on the go.”

Potential over-the-counter treatments are available for seasonal allergies. These include antihistamines, which block histamines, the chemicals found in some of the body’s cells that cause many of the symptoms of allergies. Additionally, nasal sprays are available. These are corticosteroids that help to reduce inflammation.

Confusing seasonal allergies with COVID and flu remains a possibility at this time of the year.

“Determining whether a patient is just suffering from allergies or is coming down with a cold can easily be done through telemedicine,” said Dr. Courson. “Once diagnosed, we can discuss medications and other steps to relieve the patient’s symptoms and get them feeling better.”

Piedmont offers virtual visits with primary care physicians, urgent care locations, and specialty practices. Most visits are conducted over video, and all you need to get started is a video-enabled computer, tablet or smartphone. Piedmont’s virtual visits are also HIPAA-compliant, so you can be confident that your information is kept safely. In addition, Piedmont now offers On-Demand Virtual Visits that allow patients to be seen same-day for minor illnesses or concerns, like seasonal allergies, through the Piedmont MyChart portal. If patients start experiencing symptoms, they can see a provider virtually with no appointment needed.

Screening for Colorectal Cancer is Critical

March was national colorectal cancer awareness month, and doctors at Piedmont hope to educate people in the community about the importance of regular colorectal cancer screenings, especially for individuals at high risk.

According to the American Cancer Society, except for skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the U.S. A colonoscopy is the best screening test available for colorectal cancer, and many of these cancers can be prevented through regular screenings.

With colorectal cancer now occurring in people under the age of 50, colonoscopy screenings are recommended for men and women over the age of 45. The American College of Gastroenterology, however, recommends that patients determined to be at higher risk start screening for colorectal cancer before 45. Risk factors include racial and ethnic background, a personal or family history of colorectal polyps or cancer, a history of inflammatory bowel disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, smoking, and alcohol use, to name a few.

“Anyone with an immediate family member with a history of colon cancer, such as a parent or sibling, should be tested 10 years earlier than the recommended age of 45,” said Ibrahim Adamu, M.D., a colorectal surgeon at Piedmont Physicians Surgical Specialists in Newnan. “Anyone with a genetic disposition or genetic disease should also be tested earlier.”

The American Cancer Society states that “American Indian and Alaska Native people have the highest rates of colorectal cancer in the United States, followed by African American men and women.

It is believed that an estimated 150,000 new cases of colon and rectal cancers will be diagnosed in the United States for 2024, and about 5,000 cases will be in Georgia. A recent report by the American Cancer Society revealed that Georgians are behind the national average for getting screened for these cancers, at 64 percent versus a national average of 80 percent.

A screening colonoscopy is the best way to screen for colorectal cancers and is an easier procedure than many realize. A colonoscopy is a procedure that allows for an examination of inside the colon, helping doctors to identify precancerous polyps, which are abnormal growths in the colon or rectum. Any polyps or abnormal tissues found during a colonoscopy can be removed and sent to a laboratory for testing.

Depending on risk factors, a patient may be screened using a stool-based test.

Patients are encouraged to speak with their primary care doctor to determine which screening option is the best choice.

Early stages of colorectal cancer usually present no symptoms, which is why screening is crucial because when found early, colorectal cancer is highly treatable.

“Symptoms to look for are a change in bowel habits, unintentional weight loss and loss of appetite,” said Dr. Adamu. “If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should see your primary care physician.”

Money Available When You Need It

This is my second issue of my essay titled “Living Life to the Fullest,” and it is written in honor of Iris Apfel, my wardrobe guru and inspiration. Truly a classical example of living life to the fullest. She died March 1st this year at the young age of 102. Her occupation ranged from businesswoman, interior designer, fashion designer and model. She signed to IMG in 2019 as a model at the age of 97.

She did indeed live life to the fullest from 1950-2024. I suggest you, the reader, look up Iris Apfel’s entire story as I am limited to what I can share here, both in substance and in words. In my own mind, I have declared every Monday to be “Fun-It-Up Monday,” in which I shall use my imagination to dress a little more “out there” every Monday in memory of Iris Apfel. Feel free to join me in this effort to pay proper respect to such a colorful personality.

The book of the Month is titled “How to Use the Laws of the Mind” by the author Dr. Joseph Murphy (May 20, 1898- December 16, 1981). He was an Irish-born American author and new thought minister. He followed in the steps of James Allen, Dale Carnegie, Napoleon Hill, and Norman Vincent Peale. This book deals with the power of your unconscious mind as well as healing, prayer, becoming spiritual-minded, the meaning of evil, the meaning of life, controlling one’s fears, the power of suggestion, marriage, sex, and divorce. I suggest this book be read slowly and more than once.

After each chapter, the reader would do well to ponder on the subject matter just before going on to the next chapter. For the month of May, I shall have a new essay and another interesting Book of the Month.

Yamaha presents the 2nd annual Coweta Grand Prix on April 20

The thrill of racing will return to downtown Newnan on April 20, when the second annual Coweta Grand Prix (formerly known as the Soap Box Derby) is presented by Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America. With proceeds to benefit the Coweta Community Foundation, this exhilarating event will support local students through the Yamaha Downhill Dreams Academy, where youth will have the opportunity to build and race their own cars.

According to the Foundation, this event is one “where passion meets STEM education, instilling leadership values and fostering teamwork, creating champions on and off the track!” The event is not just for youth, as there is an adult division as well.

The Coweta Grand Prix is being held in conjunction with the Rock & Road Festival that day, which will include the Rock & Road Criterium, Tour of Coweta, a Rock & Road Car Show, and other fun family-friendly events.

Kristin Webb, CEO of the Coweta Community Foundation, said, “We had so much fun last year as kids throughout the community partnered with Yamaha’s product design engineers to design custom racing cars.”

“There’s nothing like the look on a young person’s face when their design heads down the hill in the race,” said Bob Brown, Vice President of Finance and Operations Support at Yamaha. “STEM activities for young people with the Yamaha Downhill Dreams Academy make engineering meet fun.”

Godzilla x Kong; The New Empire (now playing) – l Fix Rating 6/10 – This monster movie installment is a marginal improvement over 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong.” Still, “The New Empire’s” heavily animated weightless special effects can’t hold a candle to recent Oscar winner “Godzilla Minus One.” And “Empire’s” story, if you can call it a story, lacks any attempt to be coherent or genuinely engaging.

This entry picks up in the years since the discovery of the subterranean world known as the Hollow Earth. Humans have cultivated a relationship with mortal enemies Godzilla and Kong. To prevent the two from fighting and wrecking every major city on the globe, Kong has been banished to the Hollow Earth while the unmanageable Godzilla roams freely topside. Whenever another titan, a monster of enormous size, emerges, Godzilla acts as our planet’s protector, using his great strength and nuclear breath to vanquish dangerous forces.

But when a chasm opens in Kong’s new basement dwelling, a fresh group of monsters step forth. Will Kong and Godzilla join forces to save the day?

Any fan will already know the answer to that question. But the fun is in watching Kong and Godzilla duke it out with each other and take on a colorful assortment of strange creatures. The silly, self-aware performances by actors Dan Stevens and Brian Tyree Henry help sell the film’s goofy tone. Their rolling commentary as the epic battles dominate acts as a good contrast against Rebecca Hall’s strait-laced scientist.

The problem here is the lack of any serious stakes. Possibly millions perish as the monsters destroy major cities, which is met with a slew of empty jokes. Gone is the pathos introduced in the opening sequence of 2014’s “Godzilla,” which started this new series of monster movies.

Streaming Selects: Star Trek: Discovery (Season 5 premiere April 4) – This “Star Trek” prequel and sequel series (that’s how things roll in the “Star Trek” universe) starring Sonequa Martin-Green and Doug Jones begins its fifth and final season on April 4. But Trekkies have nothing to fear; 2025 might deliver another space saga, “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” to keep things living long and hopefully prospering.

And reports are that a fourth (new reboot cast) big-screen adventure is still planned.

Migration (April 19) – At the end of last year, family audiences flocked to this animated tale of a family of ducks on vacation led by their overprotective father. Peacock gets the exclusive streaming debut of this full-feathered adventure.

Ripley (April 4) – “Fleabag’s” sexy priest Andrew Scott plays Tom Ripley in this adaptation of novelist Patricia Highsmith’s most famous creation. While many viewers may be familiar with the ne-

farious character from 1999’s “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” where Matt Damon inhabited the role, it was far from the first attempt to bring the frightening grifter to the screen. Actor Alain Delon played him in “Purple Noon” in 1960, and Dennis Hopper took a turn in 1977’s “American Friend.” This new adaptation from Netflix comes from the pen of Oscar-winner Steven Zaillian (see “Schindler’s List”).

Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver (April 4) – Director/ co-writer Zack Snyder finishes what he started last year with “Part One: A Child of Fire.” Few liked the first installment, and I wasn’t a fan, but maybe Snyder can right the ship. The story has Kora and the surviving heroes banding together to defend a peaceful settlement on the moon called Veldt.

Fallout (season 1, April 11) – While Netflix hopes to win over science fiction fans with Zack Snyder’s pricey “Rebel Moon” sequel, Amazon is betting big that video gamers will turnout for and turn on to “Fallout,” the handsomely produced adaptation of the popular role-playing adventure. Christopher Nolan’s brother Jonathan directs three installments of the eight-episode first season, which features prominent appearances by Walton Goggins and Kyle MacLachlan alongside an attractive, youthful cast. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles.

X-Men ‘97 (new episodes streaming weekly) – This series is a direct continuation of “X-Men: The Animated Series” that ran from 1992 through 1997. Fans have been bullish on this popular Marvel Comics franchise animated adaptation.

Franklin (April 12) – This lavishly produced historical series has a secret weapon, Michael Douglas in the lead as none other than Founding Father Benjamin Franklin. The story follows Franklin’s attempts to convince France to join the Americans in an alliance against the British in 1778. “A Quiet Place” star Noah Jupe and the always watchable English actor Eddie Marsan round out the cast.

VOD:: Blood for Dust (April 19) – Director/co-writer Rod Blackhurst (see 2016’s effective and minimalist “Here Alone”) assembles an impressive cast that includes Josh Lucas, Kit Harington, Stephen Dorff, and Scoot McNairy in this atmospheric crime thriller. McNairy plays a family man named Cliff who takes a dangerous business opportunity from a friend named Ricky (“Game of Thrones” star Harington). Things go badly, and Cliff is forced to deal with criminal forces that threaten his future.

Theatrical Teasers:: Monkey Man (April 5) – Dev Patel directs and stars in this gritty-looking action movie about an anonymous man who embarks on a bloody path of vengeance. The trailers tease “John Wick” style action.

The First Omen (April 5) – This isn’t the first “Omen” movie, but the fifth. After the awful “Exorcist” sequel crashed and burned last year, one wonders if an “Omen” franchise that began in 1976 has a chance. This installment purports to be a prequel following an American woman named Margaret (Apple TV+’s “Servant” star Nell Tiger Free), who, as part of her service to the church, is sent to Rome, where she stumbles onto the possible birth of the Antichrist.

Civil War (April 12) – This dystopian yarn takes place in the near future. It follows a group of reporters embedded with the military in America during a time when the country is fracturing. Parts of the nation have seceded, and nowhere is safe, even for well-meaning journalists. Word is that “Civil War” is more provocative than action-packed, and that makes sense, given that the director and writer is the Oscar-nominated Alex Garland (see 2016’s “Ex Machina”).

The People’s Joker (April 12) – Atlanta’s Plaza Theater is hosting a run for this controversial experimental feature that is a DC parody (made without permission of the copyright holders). The story casts the Joker (in the film identified as “Joker the Harlequin,” played by the film’s writer/director Vera Drew) struggling with gender identity questions and coming into conflict with a certain caped crusader.

Challengers (April 26) – Director Luca Guadagnino (see “Call Me

by Your Name”) weaves a sexy story about a former tennis star (played by “Dune’s” Zendaya) faced with a dilemma when her tennis champion husband is confronted with a new threat on the court who has a past with his wife. Trailers tease a heated love triangle.

Boy Kills World (April 26) – “It” star Bill Skarsgård (he was Pennywise) plays the title Boy in this blood-soaked revenge actioner. The futuristic-looking film has Skarsgård as a deaf man who trains for an eventual showdown with the criminals who murdered his family. Trailers tease classic video game-style fights and thrills.

As a Chef from Des Moines, Iowa, all my cooking has some Midwest influences. This version of Steak Diane is one of my favorites. I created this in southern Illinois while working my way down to Newnan, where I eventually opened Knife and Stone. I was in a small town where I worked for some gentlemen who owned a nice little restaurant in the historic downtown area. They were well-traveled and wanted me to create a tableside date night menu based loosely on a dining experience they often shared in Palm Beach.

So, on Tuesday nights, I would come out tableside and prepare a Caeser Salad, Steak Diane, and Banana Foster. All three of these dishes have remained with me over the years. We often serve the Steak Diane and a version of the Caeser Salad at Knife and Stone.

tablespoon of oil ¼ yellow onion minced 2 roasted garlic cloves sliced mushroom ¼ lb. ¼ cup whiskey 2 teaspoon Dijon ¼ cup cream ¼ cup stock dash Worcestershire sauce.

Season filet with salt and pepper. Place oil and butter into a hot pan, and sear the meat on both sides.

Remove filet from pan and add mushrooms and onions, cooking until soft. Add garlic and whiskey (watch for flame). Once the liquor is burned off, add cream, stock, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Reduce by half. Place medallions back in the sauce and cook to the desired temperature.

If you have purchased a home before or been around the real estate business you have probably heard of the appraisal process.

This is something the average person typically does not give much thought to. In the real estate world, the appraisal can be the make or break part of a transaction. An appraisal can even be a “bad word” in real estate transactions.

A home appraisal is an unbiased estimate of the true, or fair market, value of what a home is worth.

Lenders order an appraisal during the mortgage loan process so that there is an objective way to assess the home’s market value and ensure that the amount of money requested by the borrower is appropriate. Some people believe that the true market value is when a seller and buyer agree on a price. This may be true but the lender needs a way to assess this value of the property being purchased.

Appraisers, in Georgia, are regulated by the Georgia Real Estate Appraisers Board. Generally, the Georgia Real Estate Appraisers Board’s Appraisal Act requires appraisers to meet certain standards in order to conduct business and prohibits a wide variety of unfair trade practices. Appraisers must meet both education and experience requirements, complete an examination and undergo a criminal history report.

Most lenders will select their appraiser from a pre-approved pool or queue of appraisers. You may want to ask your lender about their appraiser-selecting process when you apply for a loan. Local appraisers seem to have a better grasp for current conditions of the local real estate market. As part of the appraisal process, the appraiser will take a trip to see the home in person. The appraiser will look at factors like condition, upgrades, amenities, number of bedrooms/bathrooms, room size, ceiling height, lot size, etc.

The challenging part of the process for the appraiser is selecting appropriate and recent comparable sales near the property to create a value for the property. Appraisers will look for properties with similar factors as those mentioned above. The comparable sales need to be within a certain radius (usually a few miles) of the subject property, or the property being appraised.

Appraisers can adjust and weigh the comparable sales to help create the value for the property being appraised. It is normal for an appraiser to use 3-5 recent sales to create a value for the subject property. Some properties are more difficult to appraise than others.

For example, it may be hard to find a recent comparable sale for a 10,000 sq ft property on 100 acres. In that case, the appraiser will need to open up their criteria.

The “nightmare scenario” for a real estate transaction is a low appraisal. These are the two words that can keep a real estate agent awake at night. For example, you may have a $200,000 sales price for the contract but a $190,000 appraisal value on the property. In this case, you can choose to challenge the appraisal by providing additional comparable sales (maybe the appraiser missed a sale), re-order the appraisal, change lenders to have a new appraisal completed or negotiate the difference in sales price and appraisal value. It is up to the buyer and seller to negotiate, hopefully with the help of their agent, the difference between the contract price and appraisal value.

It’s held in April which is organ donation awareness month and distracted driving awareness month, two causes very important to the work of Abby’s Angels Foundation.

Online auction coincides with this event and bidding is open April 17th and will end April 20th at 5 p.m.

• 9 a.m. start for the Rainbow Run. Free coffee is provided by Community Coffee in the morning.

5K Rainbow Run/Family Fun Day April 20 & Online Auction.

Abby’s Closets—welcoming, inspirational and warm spaces in 55 schools including Angels House and the Boys and Girls Club.

These spaces provide any school supply a students could need or want from Kindergarten-12th grade. They also provide emotional support for students as well to feel safe and supported.

TVOC (Teen Vehicle Operations Course) — monthly safe driving skills class taught by retired police academy instructors. AAF funds 1/2 of the cost for each student and a parent/guardian. This class teaches accident avoidance skills and is proven to save lives. www. tvoc.ws College Scholarships — 6 $1000 college scholarships are offered and awarded annually to graduating seniors who have completed the TVOC class.

Kate’s Club — AAF 100% funds this program/partnership in Coweta County providing free grief services to children/teens in our community. www.katesclub.org.

It only takes a stroll in pretty much any US city to see that homelessness is an issue. The problem is not new, nor easy to solve, nor simple to write about.

As I looked into the research, the numbers were worse than expected, and particularly sobering when realizing that each number represents a name. A human being. Each number representing someone’s child, parent, sibling, or neighbor.

Kelli Yeager, Executive Director of Bridging the Gap, leads one of the many local organizations working to improve the numbers and the lives of our unhoused residents. Bridging the Gap, now the largest food pantry on the south side of Atlanta, provides food assistance to around 400 families, a number which has risen 300% over the last 18 months. Fifty-two percent of their clients were new in 2023.

In addition to food, Bridging the Gap also provides showers, laundry access, hot meals, help with securing IDs and documents, financial education, and housing. There is no shelter in Coweta County (except for NEST, a warming shelter.) The closest shelter is in Carrollton.

Lighting the Way: Part 1 According to the United Way’s 2023 ALICE Report (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), forty-three percent of Cowetans in 2021 were unable to afford the basics of housing, child care, food, transportation, health care, and technology.

To use the term unhoused or unsheltered in lieu of homeless “helps to expand understanding of who these people are. Our unhoused population comes from a wide range of backgrounds, many of whom are working, and we want to get away from any stereotype that people may have in their minds,” said Yeager.

“Many clients are senior citizens who live in their cars. Rent has increased dramatically, and seniors who were paying $600/ month for the last 10-15 years are now being asked to pay $1200 $1800/month. These seniors have to move out, and have enough social security to afford a hotel for two weeks and then live in their cars the other two weeks,” said Yeager.

Affordable housing is an ongoing issue everywhere, especially during and after the pandemic. But Coweta was given an extra challenge with a devastating tornado in March 2021, displacing many residents. High inflation rates have been an issue, as well.

According to the United Way’s 2023 ALICE Report (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), forty-three percent of Cowetans in 2021 were unable to afford the basics of housing, child care, food, transportation, health care, and technology. Georgia’s ALICE rate is one of the worst in the country, with only Alabama, West Virginia, Louisiana, and Mississippi having higher scores.

With numbers like these, our nonprofits need our help. Bridging the Gap needs volunteers to assist with home deliveries, events, the warehouse, the website, prayer teams, and summer lunch programs.

They also need monetary donations, to use to buy food in bulk at the Atlanta food bank. “We can buy 12 family size boxes of cereal for $1. People often get 10 boxes for $10 at the grocery store to donate. For $10, BTG can purchase 120 boxes,” she said.

They also need to find partners to help with food distribution in Arnco-Sargent, Greenville, and Palmetto. If you’d like to help in any way, or if you need help, contact Bridging the Gap at 770-6839110. They are located at 19 First Avenue in Newnan.
