Notes from Perry Street Digging In The Dirt Is Good For The Soul Spring is here and Easter is upon us. The beauty of nature is bursting forth all around us, which for most of us brings joy and hope. It can on the downside too - bringing lots of allergies. For me, I love digging in the dirt. It is one of the best things I can do for myself. There are times I just have to let the laundry, mopping and the stuff of life go and put on a good old pair of garden gloves and start digging.

We need to dig, dig, and dig in the dirt to our heart’s content. It feels good, really good. I do it when I need to think. I need to pray. I need to be alone. When I need to work something out in my heart and soul, I often dig in the dirt and it allows me to dig into my soul. The truth is that sometimes stepping into purpose and following our dreams requires us to dig deep in our soul.

There were two women in my life that pretty much taught me everything I know about gardening. My mom and Winters’ mom. And since then I have been determined to have a beautiful garden. Talent can only take you so far and then dedication, persistence and determination must make up the rest. The same can be said for gardening, our occupation and almost anything in life.

You can learn a lot in your garden while digging in the dirt.

One thing I have found very important is you must have the right tools. It will make gardening easier and the same goes for life. The right tools make life much easier. The wrong tools make your life much more difficult.

You could probably cut a branch down with a pocket knife, but it will take a long, long time and lots of frustration.

Or, you could use a chainsaw and knock it out in seconds. You also have to know the do’s and don’ts in a garden if you wish for the plants to last and to flourish and thrive. A great gardening book is also invaluable and full of tips you will need.

The same goes with life. You can get by using the wrong tools, but the right tools make everyday life so much easier. A must have is a great bible that you actually open and read like a Life Application Bible. And if you can’t apply it, you can’t live it. You also need to fill your life with prayer warriors and women that you can count on to pray with you when you need it and even when you don’t. Learn to forgive and forgive often. Watch out for weeds, the things that can choke the joy out of your life. Trust that the Lord will order your steps. And seek peace and pursue it.

Surround yourself with the right women, the ones I call the “Sacred Few,” the circle of friends that are there for you anytime, anywhere, anyplace. Ask God to help you find them and be one yourself.

Make sure you have plenty of fruit in your life. In fact, ask yourself, “am I fruity.” Plant the right fruit in your life and make sure it stays strong and is not choked out by weeds. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, steadfastness and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23.

And best of all, at the end of the day I pray you can say, “I was able to say, I got my hands dirty and that I allowed my life to be transformed by the hands of the master gardener and used by HIM to help the world be a better place for others.”

Piedmont Newnan Recruiting New Hospital Volunteers Hospital volunteers help in almost every area of a healthcare facility like Piedmont Newnan Hospital. From inpatient services to the Thomas F. Chapman Cancer Wellness Center, these volunteers share their time with the hospital and give back to their local community.

“Our hospital volunteers play a significant role in caring for our patients, visitors and guests, as well as assisting the staff members, nurses and physicians at the hospital,” said Jeannie Johns, Volunteer Services Specialist at Piedmont Newnan. “The work they do every day makes the high-quality, patient-centered care that Piedmont Newnan delivers possible.”

Currently, volunteers are needed in many different departments, and shifts are available every day of the week. There is, however, a specific need for volunteers in the following areas – Breast Health Center, greeters at the Medical Plazas, Infusion Center, Surgical Services, and Cardiac Rehab. At the Breast Health Center, located inside the Medical Plaza adjacent to the hospital, volunteers provide support and comfort to women being seen. The surgical services team provides support for families of our patients in surgery.

They provide directions as well as ensure that loved ones in the waiting room are updated accordingly and comfortable while they wait. Greeters, and those at the Infusion Center and Cardiac Rehab, provide a warm welcome for our patients and provide directions to offices and assist patients in getting to the right place.

“Our purpose at Piedmont is to make a positive difference in every life we touch,” said Johns. “The dedication of our excellent volunteers, and the work they do every day, helps make achieving that purpose possible.”

Volunteer services is open to adults, ages 18 and older, and as a way to say thank you, they receive a free meal in the Bistro cafeteria each shift. Over the years, the volunteers have contributed to various hospital needs including scholarships for dependents of staff members and the star atop the hospital that is lit every November and December as part of the hospital’s annual Starry Night event.

“Our volunteers are so selfless, giving, kind and funny,” said Johns. “They come from all walks of life – some are pickleball players, lead singers in a band, golfers, quilters, world travelers and Sunday school teachers. Some have retired from the military, the school system, government roles, and the airlines.

One thing they all have in common is that they will help wherever there is a need and want to ensure our patients have a positive experience from the moment they enter our parking lot.”

Applicants interested in volunteering at Piedmont Newnan should have a genuine interest in giving back to the community. Those with an interest or a background in the health care industry make for ideal candidates, but it is not a requirement.

“People who have retired, or work from home, or those whose children are now in school or out of the house, may find themselves having more time and a need to make personal connections and help those in need,” said Johns.

“Being a hospital volunteer is the perfect way to give back your time.”

A retired Army drill sergeant, Shannon is married to a nurse and both of his children are serving in the military. He has been volunteering twice a week for almost a year, one day a week as a Courtesy Cart driver in our parking lots and the other day as a greeter in our Medical Plaza assisting patients however needed. “I enjoy interacting with people, helping people and being a servant,” said Shannon.

She has two sons who both live outside of the United States, and is fortunate enough to be able to visit both of them often and has loved each and every experience she’s had abroad. “It is a joy to assist patients as they come in for their appointments,” said Martin.

RUSTY KNORR Hospital Front Desk Started volunteering in 2014 Rusty Knorr has been a volunteer at the main hospital front desk at Piedmont Newnan for nine years, assisting patients, visitors, and staff. Prior to retiring, he served as a teacher, principal, Director of Operations, Central Office Administrator and Assistant Superintendent in public K-12 education for 43 years (33 in Alabama and 10 in Georgia). He grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, and has lived in Troy, AL, Opelika, AL, Eufaula, AL and Newnan, GA.

OLIVER, Pet Therapy Dog Started Volunteering in 2022

His latest obsession is pickleball. “My favorite part about being a hospital volunteer is meeting people and giving back to the community and our hospital,” said Knorr.

Oliver was born 2019 in Waterford, Ireland and is a pure-bred Golden Retriever. Dave and Pam Thomas adopted him when he was eight weeks old in Jefferson, GA. Oliver is certified as a Therapy Dog through Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Additionally, he has many certificates including HOPE Animal Assisted Crisis Response Dog and First Responders Therapy Dog.

“Our hospital volunteers play a significant role in caring for our patients, visitors and guests, as well as assisting the staff members, nurses and physicians at the hospital,” said Jeannie Johns, Volunteer Services Specialist at Piedmont Newnan.

“The work they do every day makes the high-quality, patient-centered care that Piedmont Newnan delivers possible.”

Oliver and his handlers enjoy visiting the Piedmont Newnan Hospital staff. Oliver also visits Coweta County 911 call center, Coweta County Fire/ Rescue, Pathways, Nursing homes, Coweta County Powell Library, Encompass Rehabilitation and Juvenile Court. He has the best job in the world.

Oliver typically visits Piedmont Newnan Hospital once a week, rotating between day and night shifts, and providing comfort to the staff. “Tuesdays are exciting for me because I know Oliver is coming,” said Kayla, who works in the ICU. “Oliver is just what I need to boost me up. When I get a few minutes of snuggle time with Oliver, it just makes me smile. He is the best!”

Coweta Sports Hall of Fame to induct 3

The Coweta Sports Hall of Fame is set to grow by three new inductees at its 20th Annual Banquet on Saturday, April 15, at the Coweta County Fairgrounds and Conference Center.

The 2023 Coweta Sports Hall of Fame Class will include Matt Donahue, Vernon Strickland and James Warner. Each were standout athletes at Newnan High School.

Tickets are now on sale for the Banquet which begins with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the ceremony will follow at 7 p.m. The tickets are $45 each and can be purchased by mail. Donahue was a standout pitcher for the Newnan Cougars in the mid 1980’s who went on to play baseball at the junior college level, then starred in the Atlantic Coast Conference at North Carolina State before being drafted by the Florida Marlins.

Strickland played football at Newnan High School for legendary coach Max Bass from 1988-1990, graduating in 1991, before walking on at Georgia Tech and later earning spots on rosters with various NFL teams.

Warner played football and basketball at Newnan High School before going on to Athens to become a 4-year letterman in football for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Moreland to host 2 events to honor authors

Two exciting events are coming to Coweta County this year which honor local authors. This pair of events are the Lewis Grizzard Games and the Hunt for the Lost Treasure of Coweta.

The Lewis Gizzard Games, a series of athletic competitions and celebrations, will take place June 22-24. Lewis Grizzard, the internationally known humorist, columnist and entertainer, began his career as a sports journalist. From his youth as a high school letterman athlete throughout his adult life, Lewis loved and played many sports. He is remembered as an avid tennis player and golfer. The Lewis Gizzard Games, honoring the athletic author, will give participants a chance to compete for prizes in these games as well as showcase his writing. Loyal fans can reminisce and new ones can discover his wit and wisdom.

Later in the fall, the Hunt for the Lost Treasure of Coweta will honor the work of two local authors, Edward and Helen Wolak, in a month-long event. Beginning September 1, treasure hunters will search for lost relics and ruins throughout Coweta County. Clues will be released weekly, and treasure hunters will scour the county for its trove of historic jewels. On September 30, in a finale celebration, the first to complete the hunt will be rewarded with the Grand Prize: one troy ounce of gold (valued 2/28/2023 $1823). Other valuable and fantastic prizes will be awarded as well.

Local Real Estate Market Update

2023 is off to an interesting start. While national headlines and media outlets report and forecast doom and gloom, the Coweta County real estate market is holding strong. Residential real estate prices are practically unchanged, while listing inventory and the number of transactions decreased significantly.

According to the Georgia Multiple Listing Service (GAMLS), the number of homes for sale was down 15% in January and 20% in February year-over-year. Pending sales (properties under contract) were down 28% in both January and February. Closings were down 48% in January and 34% in February.

All of this sounds bad but there are several positives. Realtors are seeing a healthier market in 2023. While it is still a seller’s market, we are seeing less multiple-offer situations and buyers have a greater chance of securing a home.

Active listings (homes for sale) were up 36% in January and 33% in February. Buyers have a much better selection of properties to choose from than they did a year ago.

Despite a large supply of homes to choose from and decreased demand, home prices are holding strong. The average sales price in Coweta County was up two percent in January and only down two percent in February. Homes are taking longer to sell: The average days on market was up to 59 days in January and 54 days in February. These are 31% and 86% increases year-over-year.

Market Update

In March, I have seen a dramatic increase in both buyer and seller activity. As of March 27th, there are 408 homes for sale in Coweta County. We were well under 200 homes for sale during the peak of a seller’s market the last two years. I have had many different types of buyers put properties under contract in the last few weeks; millennial first-time buyers, cash buyers from the baby boomer generation, builders, investors and commercial developers.

From my perspective the market is healthy. I only expect conditions to improve as we enter the spring and the summer, the busiest times of the year in real estate. Inflation, interest rates, the stock market and the Federal Reserve’s decision making are all things to keep an eye on. All these factors will influence our real estate market in 2023.

I’ve been asked how I got started playing music. Well, let’s go back a ways to my youth.

We played there for awhile, then branched out to local lodges: Moose, Elks, VFW, et.c. Later on we were able to land higher paying gigs like wedding receptions, holiday gigs, and the like.

At an early age I got my 1st drumset … and I remember playing along with a “Chuck Berry’s Greatest Hits” 8 track. That’s where I learned meter, dynamics, stole certain chops, etc.

Dad was my “chaperone “ more or less, to get in these places and man, some of the things I saw, just party people in general. Like I said, it was a different time.

Later when I was in high school, I was entering my third year in Band when Dad asked me if I ever considered playing my drums out in public. I think the reason he asked me was every evening I’d come home from school and play my drums til it was time for supper.

Now, keep in mind when Dad asked me this, it was a different time, a time when you could smoke at your local Waffle House. And that’s what he did every morning along with his cup of coffee, he’d meet up with the same bunch of guys before heading to work.

This guy told him he was playing at a nearby community center and was looking for a drummer. I hadn’t thought of it but was willing to

Spring is such a delightful time of year! Sunshine, flowers, staying light later, and the Carnegie Spring Festival! Spring always feels like such a time of renewal after winter. I always feel like that’s when the new year really begins. The trees turn green around the square and the flower baskets pop up. The downtown area really shows off how beautiful it is during spring. We won’t even discuss the pollen though. You win some, you lose some!

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery — This book begins in the spring and the descriptions are so beautiful and vivid. Who can forget Anne’s dreams of wanting to sleep in the wild cherry trees? No one can describe a nature scene like L.M. Montgomery!

The Scent Keeper by Erica Bauermeister — This book is so stunningly written. It weaves magical realism with family drama and longing for a place to feel like home. I also loved the visceral descriptions in this book. And the way the author uses scent as magic feels fresh and new.

Weather Girl by Rachel Lynn Solomon — I adored this romance book about a TV meteorologist and sports reporter. These two start scheming to reunite their formerly married bosses so they will leave them alone at work and during the process, they get to know one another. I like how this book handled depression in such a beautiful way.

Hey there, Paper readers! I’ve been thinking a lot about how quickly life’s pace has changed over the last four years. Stop, start. Run, crawl, sprint.

Work harder because you are lucky to have a job. Your job is lucky to have you.

Make your own terms. Rise up. Shut your mouth. Keep your head down. Speak up.

The reality is, there are times when we have to do each one of these things and it can be overwhelming when you don’t see it coming.

I’ve written a lot about mental health in this column, how some things seem so out of control that it affects the way we think and feel in a massively negative way.

Also, about staying positive and surrounding yourself with others that have the same and/or better mindset than you do. People that make you want to be better and make you feel heard and loved. About continuously having goals and not giving up.

But what about pushing yourself when you don’t want to, to continue to move to the next level? What about making yourself rise up and fight when you feel like you’re slipping away or that you’re overwhelmed and don’t think you can keep it up?

I tend to be a very driven person but I wasn’t always that way. If my husband hadn’t told me to stop talking to him about college until I did something about it I probably wouldn’t have signed up. If I hadn’t been given the opportunity to have the quality of life I have now, I don’t think I would not have believed it was possible.

But trust me, I had to leap to get here. Leap, sprint, crawl, pole vault and leap again.

Even writing this column was so completely out of my comfort zone it was unreal.

We have to give ourselves the permission to take chances, even though we may fall flat on our face. If you allow it to be, it can be as simple as decision making. Yes, I may fail but if and/or when I do, I will pause to reflect and start over. As long as you know what is truly important to you, and what you want aligns with that – there should be no question on whether you will give it another go.

I’ve been listening to a David Goggins audiobook lately. Although I’m not a huge fan of the excessive profanity, I think his story is fascinating. Not going into too much detail here, but if you haven’t heard of him – look him up. I read his first book (Can’t Hurt Me) last year and am halfway through the second book (Never Finished). He repeatedly makes me think about my life and my decision making.

Two takeaways from this book that I believe are valuable in this context are: 1.

Our sad stories tend to allow us to grade ourselves on a forgiving curve.

The reality is we should forgive ourselves. But we should also get up, shake it off, learn from the sadness and the tragedy. Then rise up. Fight and claw your way back if you have to, but don’t allow your Journey to stop because of something that did or didn’t happen to you in the past. Keep moving up in that curve.

The hand you were dealt was not your fault, but it is your responsibility. Like it or not, it is what it is. It is your responsibility to move on and be better for your own mental health and to show the next generation what human beings are capable of overcoming.

APRIL - The highlights for this month are Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Christ Jesus is truly risen and is walking among us daily.

Some of you have noticed that I am completely clean shaved and BEARDLESS. A new look for me since I moved to this loving town of Newnan. I was given instructions to remove all facial hair in a recent dream by a voice that I came to know as Jesus Christ. I heard and I obeyed.

A Yamaha Special Delivery Provides Inclusion and Accessibility for Bass Middle Students

A large public school campus can be intimidating, especially for those young people who have issues with mobility due to an injury or a permanent disability. For a special group of students at Blake Bass Middle School, inclusion and accessibility to all parts of the campus was proving difficult due to walking distances.

But with help from Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation, Bass Middle School in Newnan now has a way to meet the needs of students who need a hand getting around campus.

Dr. Cindy Bennett, the school’s principal, remembered how Yamaha helped her former school and others in the Coweta County school district. With that in mind, she reached out in the spring of 2022 to the company to request the donation of a gas-powered golf car.

“Our school would greatly benefit from this donation as we have multiple students who experience difficulty in walking long distances. The use of a golf car would allow our staff to transport these students to various areas around our school such as the bus circle, the football field, the track, and to the other side of our campus where we are planning to add an outdoor classroom,” she wrote in her petition to Yamaha.

“In addition, our special needs class, which consists of six students, is committed to keeping the area around our school marquee free of debris and trash. The marquee is not within walking distance for these students, so the golf car would allow the teacher to transport the students to the marquee to complete a ‘job’ that they love to do for our school.”

Yamaha heard her and has been able to fulfill her wish. A vehicle recently became available through Yamaha’s Golf Cars division and Yamaha negotiated special funding at the school district level so that it did not impact the Bass’ limited budget. A refurbished golf car with six seats was delivered, with a few additional items thrown in to help the students. Some of the enhancements that were made include a better sunroof, windshield, upgraded seats, and custom graphic package.

“Yamaha is just so responsive and really wants to go out of their way to help students to find out what the needs are and to do what they can to the best of their ability to ensure that students have what they need,” Bennett said. “We want a school of innovation that produces well-rounded students who truly know that we don’t want to see any type of limits. We want students to reach for the stars and fulfill, whatever it is, their destiny here at Blake Bass Middle School.”

The Chefs column highlights our local culinary masters. They share a recipe that has a lot of meaning to them and thankfully, how to make it. (Well at least most of it, sometimes secrets must remain that.) This month’s chef is …

Tryst and a chef lead catering company called Cuisine Chez Vous, where I spent my last five years before I moved to Georgia.

I was looking forward to moving here and trying southern, local cuisine and home cooking, only to find that it’s mostly chain restaurants and very few chef-run establishments. So, I opened Cafe 1485 to get back to basics. We take pride in using as much local products as we can including meats, breads and produce and quality brands. Even though we are currently in a small location it’s a start on the right path.

At 15, I started at McDonalds, then moved to our local Country Club where I got an introduction to Chef life. I was hooked.

The Brine:

Originally from a small town in western Pennsylvania, I fell in love with cooking at a young age. Glued to programs like “Iron Chef Japan” and “Good Eats” opened a world of ingredients unavailable to me at my local grocery store.

While working on my culinary degree at Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island, I now had a culinary playground at my fingertips, spending hours at local ethnic grocery stores and hole in the wall restaurants.

After graduating, I moved to Boston and started working for McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant where I quickly got promoted to Sous Chef.

Now, living in Boston and wanting new experiences, I worked at local private restaurants, most notably

Recipes are a great reference but unless you’re baking, they are merely a push in the right direction.

Depending on seasonal vegetables available, the following pickle recipe can easily be adjusted to fit tastes. The important part to this recipe is the vinegar, salt and water ratios. Also make sure everything is clean and wear clean gloves if possible. The bacteria and oil on your hands can taint the recipe.

2 Qts Water 1 Qt Apple Cider Vinegar 2 Cups Kosher Salt 1/4 Cup Sugar 1/4 Cup Pickling Spice 5 Garlic Cloves In a pot bring to a light simmer just enough to melt the salt.

Wash, then thin slice your veggies to uniform sizes so the batch will finish evenly. A mandoline may help save your wrist.

1 large Red Onion 3-4 Ribs of Celery 5 Medium Carrots, Peeled 2 Red Bell Peppers 7 Jalapenos (keep some seeds if you like it spicy) Place vegetables in a large container either made of glass or heat resistant plastic.

Pour the warm liquid over the vegetables, making sure the liquid covers them. (A small plate can help keep vegetables submerged).

In Theaters:

Air (April 5) – l Fix Rating 8/10 — Ben Affleck directs and plays the juicy role of Phil Knight, the visionary CEO of Nike. Affleck’s usual partner in the movies, Matt Damon, plays Sonny Vaccaro, the basketball-obsessed scout for the company who signs then-NBA rookie Michael Jordan to a ground-breaking shoe contract.

While the high-flying Jordan is a character in the film, the narrative focuses on his genius mother, Deloris (Viola Davis), who was greatly responsible for the landmark deal. Even though “Air” is an April release, it’s likely an award contender in several categories, including Davis and Damon, who are terrific in this nostalgic take on a significant moment in business and popular culture history.

On a Wing and a Prayer (April 5) — l Fix Rating 7/10 — Speaking of flying, “On a Wing and a Prayer” is a surprisingly effective telling of a harrowing true story. This inspirational film does start with some goofy, homespun, near-wince-inducing elements. But when things shift to the airplane, “Prayer” takes off.

The film becomes a riveting life-and-death struggle as southern businessman Doug White (Dennis Quaid) and his wife (Heather Graham) must figure out how to land their plane when the pilot dies in mid-flight. “Desperate Housewives” star Jesse Metcalfe plays a pilot on the ground who figures out how to communicate with White and talk him back to earth.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (now playing) l Fix Rating 7/10 – Who knew that the role-playing game that was previously adapted unsuccessfully could be effectively rebooted? “Honor Among Thieves” is light, family entertainment.

Chris Pine stars as Edgin, the leader of a band of thieves who embark on an epic quest. Edgin’s crew includes Holga (Michelle Rodriquez), his muscular enforcer, a hapless sorcerer named Simon (Justice Smith), and Doric (Sophia Lillis), a ferocious animal shapeshifter. They are assisted by Xenk (Regé-Jean Page), a gallant hero who can confront almost any threat.

Theatrical Teasers: Barry (Season 4 starts on April 16) – This is the final season of the award-winning series about a professional killer named Barry (Bill Hader), who decides to change careers and become an actor. Of course, getting out of the murder game is nearly impossible as Barry gets deeper and deeper embroiled in bloody battles between criminal organizations requiring his brutal skills.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always (season 1, April 19) – The Rangers from the original 1990s series return to don the costumes and fight evil forces from their past. While the production values look higher end than previous efforts, this new refreshed series doesn’t abandon the cornball charm of the original. Plenty of fans are no doubt ready for “Morphin Time!”

Tetris (now streaming) – l Fix Rating 8/10 — Ever since “The Social Network” proved that business narratives could make for fascinating cinema, stories of the formation of a company and the contract negotiations continue to be popular. “Air” is a similar business procedural, and next month, we’ll see the movie “Blackberry” in theaters (it’s pretty good, by the way). “Tetris” is hugely entertaining.

This 1980s set film follows Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton) and his efforts to procure the license rights to the famous game about falling blocks. But the inventor lives behind the Iron Curtain, and Henk has to travel to Russia and negotiate with shadowy government forces. It’s an engrossing and exciting film.

When Forge (Hugh Grant), a former member of Edgin’s gang, gains control of a kingdom, the thieves must work together to thwart his plans while doing pitched battle with a powerful sorcerer. The attractive cast and colorful visuals make this whimsical adventure work.

John Wick: Chapter 4 (now playing) –l Fix Rating 9/10 — The 4th film in the blockbuster series could be the best Wick yet. This epic film, clocking in at almost 3 hours, has Wick (Keanu Reeves), once again, trying to untangle himself from the mysterious High Table. Everything is bigger in this action-packed installment.

The “gun-fu” fight sequences are amazing, with one sequence shot from a bird’s eye view that is a highlight in this elegant action extravaganza.

Streaming Selects: Fatal Attraction (Season 1 starts on April 30) — Everything old is new again, as the 1987 erotic thriller gets a series update. What doesn’t ever get old is the edgy consequences of infidelity. Joshua Jackson takes on the role of Dan Gallagher, played by Michael Douglas in the original. Lizzy Caplan steps into Glenn Close’s shoes as Alex Forrest, the other woman, turned stalker after an affair. And Amanda Peet is Beth Gallagher, played by Anne Archer in 1987.

Bunnies aren’t likely safe in this steamy reimagining.

Rennervations (season 1 starts on April 12) – Before Jeremy Renner’s near-death experience with a renegade snow plow, he headlined this reality series about repurposing old vehicles for underserved communities. It looks like a home show with a unique twist.

Renfield (April 14) – Nicolas Cage stars as Count Dracula, but this movie is about his loyal assistant Renfield (Nicholas Hoult).

After years of doing whatever his boss demands and coping with a hostile work environment, Renfield decides to stand up and assert himself. Naturally, this does sit well with the Count, who will leave death and destruction in his path. Awkwafina plays a police officer who befriends Renfield on his journey of self-discovery and independence.

The Pope’s Exorcist (April 14) – Russell Crowe plays Father Gabriele Amorth, who works for the Vatican performing exorcisms.

But when the Pope (Franco Nero) asks him to investigate the possession of a boy, Amorth uncovers a conspiracy that might undermine the church.

Evil Dead Rise (April 21) – This update of the Sam Raimi franchise thrilled audiences at the South by Southwest Film Festival. The cabin in the woods is replaced with an apartment building in a big city. The reuniting of two estranged sisters is interrupted by the arrival of demons that possess folks with evil. The trailers tease blood-curdling thrills and nasty horror. Bring on the Deadites!

Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World (April 28) – George Foreman’s story is long overdue for a proper cinematic telling. The trailers look promising as the film traces the history of the beloved boxer. “Big George Foreman” is directed by George Tillman, Jr. (see “The Hate U Give” and “The Longest Ride”), and Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker plays a prominent role.

47th Annual Atlanta Film Festival + Creative Conference (April 20 – 30) — The 10-day festival kicks off at Atlanta’s treasured historic movie theater, The Plaza, with an opening night presentation of Sundance favorite, the action/comedy “Polite Society.” Among other notable screenings, Festival attendees will have an early opportunity to see “The Card Counter” director Paul Schrader’s latest crime drama “Master Gardener” starring Joel Edgerton and Sigourney Weaver. Dead Ringers (season 1, April 21) – Oscar-winner Rachel Weisz plays the role once inhabited by another Academy Award recipient Jeremy Irons in director David Cronenberg’s fantastically disturbing 1988 film by the same name. In this new approach to the Bari Wood novel “Twins,” Weisz plays the brilliant Mantle Twins, physicians who aim to change how women give birth. But anyone who experienced the Cronenberg gem will know that nothing goes as planned. The Mantles may be identical, but their personalities are starkly different, leading to an inevitable conflict. The trailers look deliciously devilish.
