Update on 56 E Broad St. Project

September 24 - October 4 11 days of fun

Last year I wrote an article about 57 E. Broad St., located in downtown Newnan. There is significant progress regarding this development recently. The site has been cleared and dirt is moving. You may remember 57 E Broad St was the site for the Caldwell Tanks business for a very long time. Well, 57 E Broad is about to be a very large and private, not city-led, mixed-use development.

What exactly does mixed-use mean and entail? If you have not visited the 57 E Broad St’s website (57-east.com) or social media pages, I would highly recommend doing so. The site and pages are as informative and rich with content as any local development that I have seen. The overall development is planned to bring together a mix of uses including restaurants, boutique retail, residential lofts, office and commercial space, greenspace, a hotel and a connection with the LINC trail network. There will also be a large food hall, Market 57. The hotel is currently planned as a Courtyard by Marriot. This is nice to see as there is a need for a hotel in downtown Newnan.

For fun I sometimes post a photo of one of my Barbies describing my state of mind. The last four weeks have been quite challenging and there were several particularly hard days. So this picture of Barbie pretty much says it all about the last few week…

Life can just be hard and it was time for some changes, so I did.

Now? I am doing much better. So this Barbie photo is a better description of how I am now. Three weeks later, I am doing much better.

The Barbie movie had a very deep underlying theme. It was really a powerful story line. Maybe that is the counselor in me. Most importantly, Barbie wasn’t made to be in box, YOU were not made to be in a box and I know I was not made for one either, Frankly, none of us are.

It was a gift from my mom that I will treasure forever and any little girls who want to play with the house and Barbies are free to come over. The doll house is in desperate need of a remodel. It has a Brady Bunch 70s vibe. So a redesign is in the near future.

The youngest SON of Thunder is in love with a beautiful, lovely, smart young woman and she is the love of his life and we love her too. She came over for my birthday to celebrate and she said to me “You are like Barbie.” You think I am like Barbie? She said “Oh yes with such enthusiasm. You can do anything just like Barbie.”

I got tears in my eyes and my heart was full. Then she gave me my Barbie Birthday card and she wrote, “Happy Birthday to the most influential Barbie I have ever met. You are so loved.” (when I read this it still makes me tear up) Have you ever felt that someone has put you in a box? Well being stereotyped is the same as being put in a box. So just as I freed all my Barbies from their boxes I hope you will be freed from the confines of how others perceive you. Just as so many have judged Barbie, you may have been judged by people too.

They may have you all wrong just because they look only at the outside of you. Barbie was created out of love and so were we.

So, what does Barbie have to do with this column you ask?

Well, we go way back. When I was child my mom had a custom Barbie house made for me. Three stories tall, six rooms and a huge bonus room on the top level. It opens on both sides so I could see my friends when we were playing.

My mom held onto it as I moved all over the country. Then it was decision time. My parents went into a nursing home and there was no question that the doll house was coming to Georgia. The Barbies and their clothes and furniture. The doll house is 4 feet tall and 4 long and it is fabulous. Since I have The Three SONs it made no sense to John Winters to keep it.

But his infamous line is, “Corby, your are going to do what you are gonna do.” So I kept it!

One of the last Barbies I purchased was in a box. Barbie was never made for a box. If you saw the Barbie movie there is a scene where Barbie is in the real world and Mattel tries to get Barbie back in the box. As they tighten the wires to hold her hands she comes flying out of that box. She knows she was not meant to be in a box.

I treasure in my heart the beautiful memories made with my mom and girlfriends through the years. I loved hanging out with Barbie and yes, Skipper and Ken. So whether you like Barbie or not, Barbie can pretty much do anything, from being a flight attendant, a doctor, a veterinarian, a nurse, a reporter, a pilot, a hockey player, astronaut, president, a homemaker, and so much more.

I know there were complaints about Barbie. Some women felt she made girls feel inadequate, but that was never the creator’s intention. Barbie changed everything for so many young girls like me. She is an independent woman, and she has a career, money, her own house, and car.

Just don’t let the blond hair, the clothes and the pink convertible fool you. Look beyond the surface.

People and Barbie really can teach us about life, love and success.

Whether in the real world or Barbieland.

Senoia Optimist Club’s Annual Fishing Derby for Kids is September 19

The Optimist Club of Senoia will host a free Fishing Derby for Kids Saturday, September 19at Marimac Lakes Park in Senoia. Registration begins at 8:30am, and the derby is scheduled from 9am to noon. The catch-and-release derby is for youth up to 15 years old. At least one parent / legal guardian must be present with each participating child.

From Staff Reports Keep Newnan Beautiful will host the last Paint Recycling Event of 2026 on Saturday, September 26.

Fees will apply for the various types of paint. The recycling event will take place in the Newnan City Hall parking lot located at 25 LaGrange Street in downtown Newnan from 8 a.m. to noon.

Paint Recycling is for wet paint only. Costs are $2 each for spray paint cans, $4 per gallon of latex paint, $5 per gallon of oil paint and $4 per gallon of deck/wood stain. No solvents, paint thinner/remover, epoxy, adhesives, lacquers, gasoline, mercury or lead paint will be accepted. Fee discounts are available for City of Newnan residents. Limits may apply in some categories.

Former Coweta County educator Menlia Trammell has established a scholarship at Mercer University in memory of her husband, Dr. Robert “Bob” Trammell. Dr. Bob Trammell was a college professor and university administrator. In retirement, he moved back to his hometown of Luthersville where he served as mayor from 1999 until his death in 2016. Before Flu Season and Holiday Stress, Know Your Numbers As families prepare to settle into busy fall routines, many adults put off routine healthcare visits. But one of the simplest steps people can take to improve their health is knowing your numbers.

Many common conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease, can develop silently without noticeable symptoms. Knowing your numbers is one of the most powerful—and actionable—foundations of preventive care and chronic condition management.

“It is one of the simplest ways to take control of your health,” said Adeola Okeowo, M.D., Piedmont Physicians at Premier Medical in Newnan. “When you understand where you stand, you and your healthcare provider can work together to reduce your risk for serious health problems down the road.”

Numbers you should know •

Blood pressure – Key indicator of heart health and stroke risk. Aim for blood pressure below 140/90, with systolic (top number) under 140 and diastolic (bottom number) under 90.

•

Cholesterol (LDL, HDL, Total) – Helps assess risk for heart disease. Aim for an LDL (bad) cholesterol of less than 130.

•

Blood sugar (Glucose/A1C) – Essential for detecting and managing diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says blood sugar should be 80 to 130 mg/dL before meals. It should stay below 180 mg/dL two hours after meals.

•

Body mass index (BMI) or weight trends – Signals risk for multiple chronic conditions.

Calculate your BMI using the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Calculator. The CDC considers a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 healthy, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or higher obese.

Grief Support Group Info: Piedmont Newnan’s hospital chaplain, Jonathan Pitts, is leading a Grief Recovery Group that is open to the community and will start on September 28.

The grief recovery group offers a safe, evidencebased environment for grievers to take effective and lasting action, no matter the type of loss experienced.

Jonathan is a Grief Recovery Specialist who is trained and certified by the Grief Recovery Institute.
