On Saturday, Sept. 17, I invite you to the 28th annual Celebrate Munford. This year’s celebration is the culmination of a year long project by many volunteers and I encourage you to join us for the festivities. I would like to personally thank Patriot Bank, Patriot Bank Mortgage and Patriot-Stitt Insurance for their support as our title sponsor. Also, many thanks to Baptist Memorial Hospital – Tipton for their sponsorship of the Celebrate Munford 5K Run held in August. Without the support of these fine sponsors and the support of many other businesses and individuals, this day could not happen. The Celebrate Committee has worked hard to lay out our booth spaces, car show, and stages to better accommodate the large crowds we expect this year. I believe you will like it better. We are pleased to present a fine slate of musical entertainment for you this year on four separate stages. We have assembled a variety of genre to appeal to all ages. The Mighty Electric St. Jude Band is our featured entertainer; they will perform at 4 p.m. and we will present a check for $1,500 to St. Jude Children’s Hospital at the end of their performance. Throughout the past year, Celebrate Munford has been involved in the community, sponsoring Celebrate Independence on July 4, the Celebrate 5K Run and “Fill the Sleigh” Christmas Parade. Celebrate Munford grants have been given to many charitable organizations and scholarships have been given to deserving Munford High School students. Again, I invite you to come to Munford on Saturday Sept. 17 for a great day of family fun and entertainment. Munford is nationally acclaimed as a safe place to live and raise a family. Exceptional schools, safe neighborhoods, recreational opportunities and a high quality of life attract many to our town. That’s why we say Munford is “My Kind of Town.” Best regards, Dwayne Cole, Mayor

For more than 120 years, The Leader has maintained a print shop for commercial customers and that tradition is still alive and well. A two-color Harris press continues to crank out products, from postcards to magazines while a Chief duplicator handles business cards, letterhead and envelopes and more. While technology changes from time to time and a new piece of equipment is moved in, the commercial print operation has been running strong since well before The Leader moved into its current location more than 40 years ago.

New fire station under construction Funded with a $1.8 million Recovery Act grant, a new fire station is under construction in downtown Munford. The much-needed facility will bring more space for the Munford Fire Department’s headquarters, allowing for the housing of each of the department’s vehicles. Fire chief Alan Barkelew said a museum will also be included in the new facility in addition to new day rooms, offices, sleeping quarters, a kitchen and more. The department employs eight full-time and 40 volunteer firefighters at three stations in Munford and Atoka. Firefighters protect a 35-square mile area in the department’s primary response area and participates in automatic mutual aid to other departments extending coverage to more than 60 miles. A population of more than 29,000 people receive fire services through the Munford-Atoka Fire Department. The project is expected to be completed by early 2012, according to city officials.
