Unilever gives $61K for scholarships By FRANCE GASQUET fgasquet@covingtonleader.com

On Monday, July 21, the Tipton County recipients of the REDI scholarship were honored at Dyersburg State Community College. The scholarship, a fundamental part of the REDI program, was developed specifically to increase the culture of education in West Tennessee. REDI, or the Regional Economic Development Initiative, began in March of 2012. According to REDI, educational culture is transformed by stressing post-secondary education, advising career paths and assisting in college applications and financial aid forms. The goal is to create a higher level of educated population and thus a more prosperous workforce and

community. The scholarship is a two-year commitment from the county that provides each student with $600 for both the first and second year. The student must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA and perform eight hours of community service after the first year of college. According to county executive Jeff Huffman, research has shown that in the next 30 years, 72 percent of new jobs will require an education past high school, whether it be a certificate, an associates degree or a four-year university degree. Currently in Tipton County, 14 percent of adult residents (25 years or older) have a bachelors degree or higher and 19 percent of adult residents have an associates degree or higher. That, according to Huffman, is below the state average, which is below the national average.

REDI was created as an economic initiative for SouthWest Tennessee, striving to improve the quality of the workforce in the area, by increasing the current percentages. In the last two years, more than 100 students have received the REDI scholarship, which is more than $61,000 in scholarship dollars this year. There are plans are for an increase in scholarship recipients each year, said Huffman. REDI is funded by payments from Unilever to Tipton County government and according to Huffman, the corporation is proud to be a part of such a program, as the dollars are reinvested back into the workforce, thus improving the quality in the pool of workers. For more information about REDI, go to www.reditn.com.

Munford's ISO drops to a four Family Dollar locating on Munford Avenue By JEFF IRELAND jireland@covingtonleader.com Munford fire chief Alan Barkelew delivered some news at Monday's Munford Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting that should please that town's citizens. He said that his fire department had recently been assessed and that their ISO rating had been reduced from five to four. The ISO program provides a country-wide standard that helps fire departments in planning and budgeting for facilities, equipment and training. Class 1 generally represents superior property fire protection, and Class 10 indicates that the area's fire-suppression program doesn't meet ISO’s minimum criteria. “This is due to the hard work of everybody,” Barkelew said. “And this means savings on everyone's insurance.” According Barlew, the department was one-tenth of a point away from a three. “I'm going to look at some numbers and see if we can get it down to a three,” Barkelew said. “We were so close.” Munford Mayor Dwayne Cole said moving from a four to a three should save citizens six percent on their home owners insurance. Said Cole, “This is a tribute to Alan Barkelew and all of his firefighters.” In other matters: • Family Dollar is coming to Munford. Cole made the announcement Monday night that the company is building a 9,000-square-foot retail story on the south side of Munford Avenue, in between the Munford Fire Department and Pop's Gas Station. Located near the intersection of Munford Avenue and Beaver Road, the building is expected to begin going up in six months. • Cole announced that Gov. FLASHBACK

Senator wants ‘serious’ immigration plan in place U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) recently told the Obama administration it needs to propose a “serious plan” to stop unaccompanied minors from entering the United States illegally. He detailed a three-part plan to secure the border, cut off foreign aid to countries that don’t help the U.S. send unaccompanied children home safely and change federal law to help deal with the crisis more quickly. “What’s missing here is a serious plan from President Obama to secure the border,” Alexander said in a hearing of the Senate Appropriations Committee, of which he is a member. “The president needs to secure the border now – using the National Guard in the way that President Bush did if that’s what it takes – and deal with this crisis of unaccompanied children illegally entering our country. We need to send these unaccompanied children back home safely, as quickly as possible, and we should cut off foreign aid to countries that don’t cooperate.” Alexander continued, “If a Democratic amendment to legislation that passed in 2008 makes it more difficult SEN. LAMAR ALEXANDER to send these unaccompanied children back to a safe place in their own countries, then we need to change the law.” The senator made his remarks at a hearing on President Obama’s proposal to deal with the increase in unaccompanied minors crossing the southern U.S. border. Alexander said a serious proposal would do three things: Secure the border – In particular, he said, the Obama administrationneeds to secure the border in the Rio Grande Valley Sector of Texas, where upwards of 400 children cross the border each day. That may require the use of the National Guard, as President Obama did with 1,200 troops in 2010 and 2011, the senator said. President Bush enacted a more extensive plan, Alexander said, activating 30,000 members of the National Guard from 2006 to 2008. Send unaccompanied children home safely – Alexander said the United States needs to send unaccompanied children back to their home countries safely. If foreign countries won’t help in finding the children a safe place to return to, then they “shouldn’t receive another dime of foreign aid until they cooperate,” Alexander said. Fix the law – Alexander said Congress should re-examine the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2008, which included a Democratic amendment that may be making it more difficult to quickly and safely send unaccompanied minors back to their home countries. Alexander first called on President Obama to consider deploying the National Guard on July 9. On June 26, Alexander joined 42 senators in sending a letter to President Obama calling on him to “make clear” that the U.S. will enforce its “strict rules about how people get into our country.”

From the family of Angela Young, we would like to express our appreciation to many different churches, family, and friends for their thoughts and prayers. Thanks, Raymond & Peggy Teamer & Shirley Young

The family of Sara Roe Bradshaw would like to extend loving appreciation to all who supported us during the loss of our Mother, Sister, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother. We especially thank Covington Care Center, BM H-Tipton Emergency Staff, Maley Yarbrough Funeral Home, Rev. Lisa Peterson, Mrs. Leigh Buie, Mrs. Camille Smith, Mr. Jeff Bradshaw, Mrs. Dianne Honeycutt, Mrs. Bettye Baskin, Mrs. Ruth Wallace, Donna Olswing and the Julia Ann Sunday School Class from Holly Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Pall Bearers. Our entire family, hosts of friends, and the community, showed love beyond measure. We will forever miss Mother, Meemaw, Sara, but we know in our hearts she is watching over us from Heaven. Thank you for all from the depths of our hearts. Sincerely, Jimmie, Phil, Gale and Faye Bradshaw, Judy Baskin, Ruth Kelley, the Grandchildren and extended family.

My child’s future is important to me. School board meetings. Zoning changes. Proposed laws and resolutions. Public notices inform citizens of those changes. If some state and local officials remove them from our community newspapers and put them on the Internet exclusively, citizens might miss a vote or meeting that will directly affect their lives.

I have the RIGHT to know. Leave public notices in MY local newspaper. Learn why public notices should stay public in TN: tnpublicnotice.com

New Tennessee gun law As of July 1, 2014, any Tennessean can keep a loaded handgun, shotgun or rifle in a car or truck you legally possess. The only requirement is that you are legally able to possess a gun under state and federal law. You still cannot carry it on your body if you don’t have a state-issued handguncarry permit, however. David Peel Handgun-carry perPeel Law Firm mit applicants undergo stringent criminal background checks, must pass mandatory gun-safety training, and are issued a nifty little card to carry. The law won’t allow those without carry permits to keep their loaded firearms in vehicles where parking lots are “posted against guns.” We will see more of those “gun-free zone” signs soon, I am sure. Criminals prefer unarmed victims in gun free zones, but the bad guys seem to entirely ignore the

pesky laws we follow, making them what we call: “criminals.” As you might expect, some law enforcement were in favor, while others opposed this change in the law. Many of those favoring it looked at Texas, where loaded long guns have been allowed for years, without a bloodbath. Some of those opposing it seem to point to the idea that some criminals would be “allowed to have guns” and thus might do bad things. This seems like a better argument in favor of arming the innocent, since bad guys are armed either way. However, if you get pulled over at night, turn on your dome light and grab the steering wheel. Put the police at ease. They do not know you. This law might save some lives, but I fear for the driver that looks to cop like “he is going for a gun.” Be careful. Mr. Peel seeks justice for those injured in car accidents, work place incidents, medical malpractice, and nursing homes. He often addresses churches, clubs and groups without charge. Mr. Peel may be reached through PeelLawFirm.comwherein other articles may be accessed.

COMMENTARY

The Reference Point of Truth Perhaps one of the most perplexing things about our society today is its seeming rejection of absolutes, especially moral absolutes. Just recently, one of the largest Presbyterian groups in the country ordained its first "gay" minister. The minister who delivered the sermon at the ordination had been adamantly opposed to ordaining homosexuals (the Bible uses the term sodomite) to the ministry, but he changed. For all intents and purposes, this was equivalent to ordaining an openly adulterous man to the ministry. How does something like this happen? Someone moved the moral goalposts. The absolute of right and wrong was marred for the sake of emotion and, perhaps, the fear of seeming to be "out of step" with mainstream thought and prac-

tice. rather one of M a y b e absolutes. The we should Lord has told just accept us that sexual the fact that activity outside walking with of marriage is God will wrong. Morality is judge ourselves there is not a relevant matter, but no hope of correcting our

moral shortcomings. Absolutes are those markers, those reference points of truth, by which we can examine our life and get it back in line with the Word of God. Pandering to the flesh, excusing our sin, and haven't we all been guilty of that, will only serve to further the deviation from godliness to ungodliness. The Bible is clear that there will be a decline and apostasy in the last days. It may well be that we are seeing the fulfillment of prophecy but are so involved in daily life that we are missing the broader implications. What are we to do? We are commanded to stand fast. We are commanded to hold forth the truth in love that we may rescue some from hell. May the Lord help us to do so.

Band raises more than $40,000 for uniforms By FRANCE GASQUET fgasquet@covingtonleader.com Since mid April, the 130 students who make up the Brighton band have raised more than $40,000 for uniforms. “It’s amazing what 130 kids who make up their minds can do,” said Jonathan Finley, director of the Brighton band. In order to close in on the final goal of $62,000, band members and supporters have sold popcorn, had car washes, participated in Dairy Queen night (where 10 percent of sales were donated to the cause), sold sweet tea to Brighton High Students, sold peaches from Jones Orchard and asked for sponsorships. The next upcoming fundraiser will be selling cookie dough this fall. “The customer has

an option to just donate money, which has done really well,” said Finely. “The community has been phenomenal in supporting us.” Finley said the band also received a grant of $11,500 from the City of Atoka. “Right now, we’re down to only needing $22,000. We’ve raised $40,000 since midApril.” For more information or to help with a new band uniform, go to brightonband.com or call the band office at 8409420. “Under sponsorship forms, a uniform-drive sheet can be downloaded,” said Finley. “It shows the supporter where the money goes, for example, someone can purchase a pair of pants for the band.

Junior Auxiliary has new location Stuff the Bus project is this Saturday By FRANCE GASQUET fgasquet@covingtonleader.com Junior Auxiliary has announced a new Covington site for the annual Stuff the Bus Project, which will be held Saturday, Aug. 2, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Applebee's in Covington and Fred’s in Munford are the new locations. Stuff the Bus collects school supplies for children in need and last year, the project served every school in the county. Lists for supplies are above and JA will hand out lists at each location. Auxiliary member Shannon Leach said the project is very important to the community. “It makes such a difference for children, families, and teachers when our

students can start their school year off with everything they need,” said Leach. “We are so thankful and blessed by how generous the people of Tipton County have been each year by donating school supplies for this project and we are looking forward to being able to provide even more students with supplies this year.” This year, the two locations will be holding a friendly competition to see which one can collect the most school supplies. Donations for the project will be accepted from those who cannot attend Aug. 2. For more information, contact the Junior Auxiliary of Tipton County Facebook page or email at contactus@ tiptoncountyja.org.

DIXIE GIRLS SOFTBALL

Thousands attend World Series

Pair of Atoka teams make lifelong memories By JEFF IRELAND jireland@covingtonleader.com

Neither of the two local teams involved in the Dixie Girls Softball World Series last week and early this week in Atoka were able to win a title. But one thing is for sure: The players, coaches and fans made some lifelong memories. “This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Matt Meadors, who coached the Atoka Debs in the 17-18-year-old age group. “They will remember this all their lives.” Twenty four teams from around the southeastern United States competed in two age groups: Angels (9-10) and Debs. Atoka Dixie Girls president Hayden Harrison estimated that 2,500 to 3,000 people came through the games Saturday and Sunday to watch 32 games. As teams were eliminated the crowd naturally became smaller, but Harrison said he couldn't have asked for a better tournament. “I think it went great,” Harrison said. “We were blessed with perfect weather and no rain. I talked to a guy from Louisiana who had been to other world series and he said this was the best one he ever attended.” The Debs lost to a strong Alabama team in the tournament opener on Saturday before bouncing back for a 9-1 win over Florida on Sunday. Mississippi eliminated the Debs Sunday night. “I was very, very proud of the girls,” Meadors said. “I think they did outstanding against some serious competition. I really want to thank Atoka and Dixie Youth. They put on a great show.” The Atoka Angels defeated Virginia 11-0 in their tournament opener Saturday afternoon.

Continued from B1 After a 9-0 loss to Texas Sunday morning, Mississippi ended the Angels' run with a 3-1 win in extra innings Sunday night. Angels head coach Bobby Billings took his team to three tournaments before the world series and they won them all. He said he hopes to keep his group together next year and make another postseason run. “We're going to try and give it another run next year, Billings said. It was the first time Billings had coached in a world series and it was the first time his players had competed in one. “That Sunday, there were so many people in the crowd, I think that put some pressure on our players, Billings said. “There were at least 200 people in the crowd. None of those kids had been in a game with that many people watching.

THE CIVIL WAR AND TIPTON COUNTY

Battle of Missionary Ridge-attack on the Confederate center By RUSSELL BAILEY Tipton County HIstorian Continued Nov. 25, 1863 Confederate artillery fire did not slow the Federal advance; the weak volleys from Rebel skirmishers and those in the rifle pits at the base of the Ridge failed to stop the enemy infantry. As these troops retreated up to the crest of Missionary Ridge, Confederates on top could not fire down without shooting into their comrades climbing the steep slope. Many a barefooted Rebel soldier had a terrible time retreating up the slope of the ridge, shooting occasionally, reloading, carrying his knap or haversack. One Confederate recalled “scraping, cutting and bruising his bare feet, struggling up the ridge.” The initial Federal breakthrough of the Confederate lines along the center on top of Missionary Ridge occurred where Patton Anderson’s division was deployed. It was Anderson’s old Mississippi brigade com-

manded by Col. William F. Tucker that was the first to break and retreat, then those of Arthur Manigault and Zachariah Deas. Deas’ departure uncovered the flank of Brigadier Gen. Alfred J. Vaughan, Jr., the last of Anderson’s division who were still battling the Yankees on the northern end of Missionary Ridge. Vaughan’s soldiers had skirmished with Federals earlier in the rifle pits at the base of the ridge. Tipton’s Rebels in the consolidated 13th and 154th Tennessee infantry regiments, Vaughan’s brigade, had been in reserve on top of the ridge; they now became engaged with the Yankees. Vaughan’s front was assailed by the Union brigade of Edward Phelps; Phelps was killed ascending the slope. Vaughan’s left flank was also being attacked; the 11th Tennessee under Col. George W. Gordon (later Tipton’s United States Congressman from 1907-1911) was directed to charge Van Derveer’s Indianans coming from the south. At this point Vaughan’s entire embattled brigade advanced on the foe, firing a deadly volley into the Federals at 40 paces. Their success was only or a moment. Vaughan’s men

Mt. Carmel-Clopton Elaine Watkins Well, we're getting to the time of year that we pray for rain. On Sunday, it was cloudy, but just a 30 percent chance, then nothing the rest of the week. I hope we get a little out of this cold front that will take temps from 96 today into the 80s! I've been working early election in Munford all week, and love it, especially seeing all the folks I've worked with before. It’s been a good turnout so far - early vote until noon this Saturday, Aug. 2! I took Wednesday off and went to a Tennessee Area of Conservation district directors' meeting in Jackson. I went to see my

dad, Kenneth "Pop" Weir, and he wasn’t doing well, very confused. I hope he's better today - there are good and bad days and worse days with Alzheimer’s. We celebrated Courtney’s birthday Wednesday night with a “Better Than Sex” cake. We had a big time eating cake and watching her open gifts. Lyla and Minnie the Cat played with the tissue paper from the gifts! Happy birthday, Courtney! Debbie Otts’ mother, Charlie Hardin, Pat Armstrong’s father, and so many others who are taking treatments and all servicemen and women, as well as voters! Happy birthday to Ashley Hobson on July 28, Lisa Johnson and Camille Starck on the 29th, Ann Huggins, Dustin Pinner and Linda Grant on the 30th, Courtney Watkins and Kristin Sallee on the 31st and Dale Laxton, Paulette Graham and Caleb Smith on July 2! Happy anniversary to Jeff and Jan Hanks on July 27 and Jimmy and Mary Jane Rogers on the 28th! This week’s farm report:

were ordered to fall back to Chickamauga Station by Gen. Patton Anderson. As Anderson’s division gave way, the divisions of Generals’ William B. Bate (future Tennessee governor and United States senator) and Alexander P. Stewart crumbled. (Stewart had commanded an artillery battalion at Randolph in 1861.) These divisions were in the corps commanded by former U. S. Vice-President John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky. One of Stewart’s brigades was commanded by Gen. Otho French Strahl. This Ohio-born, Dyersburg lawyer commanded Tipton’s men in the 4th and 5th Tennessee Consolidated and also served at Randolph in 1861. Strahl commanded the Rebel left wing of the division that day. Strahl’s Tennesseans, 974 men and Marcellus Stovall’s 741 Georgians extended southward from Bate’s line along the Bragg’s headquarters front. Randall Lee Gibson commanded a small Louisiana brigade of 764 muskets to the right or north of Strahl. Jesse J. Finely’s Florida brigade was next to Gibson’s command and numbered about 750 muskets. These four brigades

numbered 3,279 men. Stewart’s line was hit from the front, rear and both flanks by 10,000 Federals. The entire division was routed. Dawson’s and Stanford’s batteries were able to withdraw and save their guns. Stewart’s Rebels were attacked by Richard Johnson’s division and the brigades of Francis T. Sherman and Charles Harker of Philip Sheridan’s division. William Dillon describes the ensuing fighting that Covington’s “Tipton Rifles” were engaged: “At daylight we marched about one mile further to the right…I did not see the General Stewart all day. Shortly after daylight the 31st and 33rd (Tennessee) regiments were thrown out as…skirmishers; our (4th and 5th Tennessee) regiments (remained in rifle pits prepared by Gen. Bushrod Johnson) to support them. We lay in this situation about half way up the side of the ridge for about three hours when we were sent out as skirmishers…” Continued next week

Greetings. Hello everyone, I am still on vacation. Our prayer list includes Janet and Jeffrey Mosley and their son Charles, Nathanial Sherrill Jr., Eugene Baker, Katarene Harber, Marie Powell Ivy, from Jonesboro, Ga., Ruth Alston, Carlotta Jones, Connie Brown, Eva Heaston, Jessie Lawson, Clark and Birdie Jones, Joseph Heaston Sr., Charlene Sneed, Flossie Woods, Buelah Wakefield, Mary Ballard and Alma Burton Dye. This is it for this time. Remember, “Life is too short to not enjoy every moment of it.” Until next time.

Hi everyone. I hope you have had a great week. Have you completed those summertime projects yet? Famous last words often are, "This summer, I’m going to take care of that." or "This summer, we’re going to see them." You know what I mean! We all seem to have a way of letting things get in the way. Once that task is completed, man, what a relief! My attic needs cleaning out, as well as a storage building, but I have a legitimate excuse; it’s been too hot. I suppose the fall will be a better time for that sort of cleaning. My daughter Sherri Ann, is having a yard sale this weekend, maybe I can join her with a few things. My other grandson, Chase Kidd, has had another somewhat serious injury. He plays such aggressive sports he’s been to the emergency room a few times. He was in Atlanta playing baseball about two weeks ago and rolled his ankle. It swelled up like a tennis ball. Come to find out, he has two torn ligaments.

There will be no football this season for him, but he says basketball later is still most likely. I love it when they all stay busy. It helps to keep me busy, too. Speaking of the Kidd’s, I had lunch with Miss Linda and Mr. Wayne and all the Kidd family this past Sunday. She is a remarkable cook. It is so nice to be able to continue family traditions. Salem Presbyterian Church Worship is at 11 a.m. Rev. Charles Todd is the minister. The session will meet this Sunday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. and the diaconate will meet at 3 p.m. Dear Salem, Thank you for all the love and support that you have shown during my mom’s hospital stay and her last days at Covington Care. We appreciate all the cards, calls, visits, food and especially the prayers. My mom loved Salem and all the people. What a special church family! We are truly blessed here at Salem. Kim Gray and family. Address change: Rebecca Regen, 1424 Island Town Drive, Memphis, 38103 Memorials to Salem: In memory of Frances Blackmon and W. L. Sparkman.

Sharon Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church Worship is at 9 a.m. Rev. Charles Todd is the minister. We welcome members, friends and visitors. Please remember our prayer list : Kimberly Bascomb, Brian Holland, Gayle Hulsey, Mary Kirk, Lorrie Martin, Martha McQuiston, Edgar Moses, Danny Salmon and Marvin Turnage. In closing, I’ll be glad when early voting is over for many reasons, however it has been fun visiting with so many people coming and going and talking to the various folks working for the candidates in the tents. I’ve been working for a candidate as well. She and I have been friends for a long time. She has really done a good job for the people in our district. Thanks to Mr. Jimmy Vandergrift for supplying our nice tents and wonderful location. The world in which we presently live, is in such a bad shape, that many, many prayers are needed. God bless America.
