Publisher’s Letter The start of a new year brings many things. A reset, fresh eyes, promise of greatness, resolutions, new beginnings and... floods. I mean fairdinkum! Come on! It keeps coming and coming. That’s three now. Yes, they have been big; horrific fire season 2019/2020, global pandemic 2020 to 2022, and now, the recent floods. Our hearts go out to the people affected by the floods who have lost everything. A shout out to the diversity of our culture and the Aussie spirit. Local artist Billy Bain is challenging colonial narratives of masculinity with his unique exhibition ‘Being Manly’ at Manly Art Gallery & Museum. An Indigenous man born and raised in Manly, his paintings and ceramic artworks playfully examine popular iconography and histories of the area while referencing the continued presence of the traditional custodians of this land. “When Captain Arthur Phillip encountered the Gayemagal people in 1788, he was impressed by their ‘confidence and manly behaviour’, so he named the area Manly Cove,” Billy said.

COVER ARTIST
Sydney-based illustrator, poet, and muralist Joel ‘Mulga’ Moore has been covering the world with bright and bold characters for years. His latest creation, MulgaKongz, has entered a new digital platform. Beaches COVERED. Publisher, John Vickery, spoke with this season’s Cover Artist to find out more. G’day Joel. I did a little Google research and discovered the name Mulga is reference to a hardy Australian Native plant found throughout inland Australia. Why the name Mulga? How does it suit your personality? Mulga was my nickname at school and I got it when I was in year 5. I recited Banjo Patterson’s poem ‘Mulga Bill’s Bicycle’ in front of my class. I heard one of my snot-nosed classmates, who sat next to me saying, “Hey it’s Mulgaaaa.” The name stuck. Some variations have been Mulga Bill, Mulga Pig and Mulgs. When it came to choosing an artist name, I googled my real name. There

is an American actor dude with the same name as me. He even has the same middle name as me, which is kinda freaky. You might recognise him from the movies – Dodgeball and Avatar. I think Mulga works well and it ties in nicely with how my art has an Australian larrikin feel and the fact that my nickname comes from a character in a poem. I now write poems about my own artistic creations so it’s a nice full circle kind of thing. If the plants are Aussie and hardy, as an artist how would you describe yourself, style, persona, wit? I’d describe my artistic style as Summer fun-loving Aussie
good times; lots of bright colours and funky characters chilling. I like to make people smile so with my art, I’m always trying to bring joy, colour and fun times into the world. The world is full of serious bad stuff at the moment so I like to make my mark by creating a world where only good times exist, and the viewer can enter it for a brief moment of time and feel good. Your style is definitely unique and colourful. Is this the inner kid trying to break-out in you or do you just wish to make a statement with colour? I don’t want to grow up so there’s definitely that element of the child within breaking out

Your characters in your artwork, such as the MulgaKongz NFT series, will be throughout this issue of Beaches COVERED. Why are the characters cool to draw? How did you come up with the concept? I first started drawing gorillas in 2012 after taking my daughter to Taronga Zoo. There was this big, awesome gorilla just hanging out there. He inspired me. I’ve painted a lot of murals, but my first ever mural was of a gorilla at Bondi Beach. Releasing an NFT collection of Summer-loving gorillas is a natural progression. I really do love drawing them. Funky humanified animals is my favourite subject matter. Growing up as a kid, was the height of Mambo Art with legends such as Reg Mombassa an inspiration to you? Reg Mombassa and his awesome collab work with Mambo was definitely an inspiration to me. I sketched a few farting dog drawings in the margins of my textbooks in my school days.
in my creations. Creating in bright, funky colours is something that came natural to me. I figured if you are going to use colours, it’s better to use bright, nice ones than dull, daggy ones. Reinvention. You once worked in finance. You’re now a successful international artist. Talk me through how you made that transition. After I left school, I went to uni and got a Bachelor of Economics. I found myself working in the financial planning industry. After 10 years, I came to my senses and thought of trying my hand at fulfilling my lifelong desire of having a career I actually liked. Art was something I loved so I started my new career in art by printing my artwork onto T-shirts and taking them to markets on the weekends. For about two years, I did this while still working in an office job. My art career then just took off. That was eight years ago and it’s been an awesome ride. I’ve heard you are getting into the NFT world. What are NFTs and how have they made monetising art in the new world a lot easier and profitable? Non-Fungible Token (NFT) is a digital asset that exists completely in the digital universe—you can’t touch
it, but you can own it. An NFT can be any type of digital file – an artwork, an article, music or even a meme. The way, it can be owned through technology called the blockchain which makes ownership of digital assets possible. Before blockchain technology, digital assets could not be owned, so it’s a pretty huge development. Now you can purchase, own and trade unique digital artworks like you can a real life original painting. I’m releasing a collection of artworks called MulgaKongz. There will be 8,888 unique gorilla artworks sitting on the Ethereum blockchain. If you purchase one, you will be a shareholder in the MulgaKongz world, join the community and participate in the benefits it provides. Over time, that digital asset could increase in value (not financial advice).
What’s the biggest piece of wall space you have ever worked on? I’ve painted a couple of big colourful gorilla characters on some large walls at Greenway Plaza Shopping Centre in Western Sydney. The biggest wall was about 30 metres by 8 metres. I’ve also been part of a project in China where my artwork was animated and lit up on about 15 high-rise buildings using millions of LED lights. That was pretty sweet! Beaches COVERED.’s Autumn issue theme is CULTURE. Do you think the Australian art scene and culture is in a strong place for 2022? I know a lot of the creative industry have been doing it tough these past few years during COVID and the lockdowns. But taking COVID out of the equation, I think we are in a good place. As an artist, there are a lot of opportunities, whether that be public art projects, licensing art on cool products for cool brands or to the emergence of the NFT world. There are opportunities out there. It’s just a matter of finding them and getting involved. •
It’s still early days for NFTs and 99% of people don’t know what they are, but I think it’s worth being educated on it and getting your head around it too. If you are interested in checking out my MulgaKongz project, go to my Twitter account at @MulgaKongzNFT or visit www.mulgakongz.com.

NANCY NUNGURRAYI WORKING ON WIRRULNGYA
NANCY NUNGURRAYI Nancy Nungurrayi was an exceptionally talented artist of worldwide acclaim. Born in 1935, deep in the Australian Desert in Pollock Hills, Western Australia, Nancy sadly passed away in 2009. Nancy, her clan’s matriarch and senior law woman for her country, grew up in the bush. From a young age, she was instructed on how to locate and extract water and hunt for sand goanna, birds and collect edible flora. Nancy’s artworks always include patterning that represents water. Nancy loved being busy and was often described as being a “bee in a bottle”. She was most happy with a paint

brush in her hand and never wanted to be without a canvas. Nancy had an intense passion for what she was painting and unlike most artists, who paint one story over and over, painted enormous variety. Every canvas is unique, as Nancy painted the creation story of various locations throughout her country. She would always sing the creation story as she painted. Nancy was inseparable from her sister Naata, also a world-renowned artist. Nancy and her sister supported their large extended family with the proceeds of their art and were both incredibly proud of their success and ability to support their family. Their works are housed by private and public collections worldwide.

Honey Ant Gallery’s artworks have been carefully hand selected over many years from some of Australia’s most remote art communities. “It’s especially rewarding to showcase emerging artists, and support them on their journey in becoming more established and highly sought after,” says Lisa McLaren from the Sydney gallery. The Gallery represents many superb artists, all with their distinctive styles, especially two exceptional talents, Nancy Nungurrayi and Polly Kngale.

POLLY KNGALE Polly Kngale is an immensely respected and accomplished artist from the Utopia region who was born in 1940. Together with her sisters, Polly is a senior custodian of the Bush Plum Dreaming story. Polly’s artworks are highly sought after for their bold, timeless and joyous quality. Layer upon layer of paint is applied, creating a multi-dimensional, aerial representation of her country where the bush plums are plentiful. Polly commenced her artistic career with batik like many of the women in Utopia, before venturing into painting with acrylic paints on canvas - a far more broadly appealing medium. Polly, a highly skilled colourist, often depicts the topography in shades of reds, oranges and yellows reflecting the varying seasonal palette. With great intuition she applies big, bold dots, each representing the bush plum. The knowledge of gathering and storing Bush Plums and scattering its seeds is referred to as ‘Bush Plum Dreaming’. Polly honours the spirit of the bush plum with patterns celebrating all aspects of the bush plum fruit.

SEA EAGLES CONNECTING WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES ON THE BEACHES
The Manly Warringah Sea Eagles have teamed up with local business owners through an exciting new initiative called the ‘Eagles Nest Business Club.’ Beaches COVERED. spoke with local businessman and co-founder, Andrew Towner, to find out more.
JACOB BIRCH, ASHLING O’BRIEN, ANDREW TOWNER, ADAM THOMAS & TIM PHARO
The Eagles Nest Business Club is a new concept to the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles based on an initiative by the club and local business owner, Andrew Towner. The new program is designed for businesses who want to dip their toe into an NRL Club sponsorship at a lower than usual investment level. The former Northern Beaches restaurant owner and now, Fancy Forks Hospitality owner has been working with the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles since 2019 in a Business Development role. “I’ve been involved in multiple business networking groups for years, and I saw a huge opportunity for business owners that were Sea Eagles fans like myself to get together and help each other’s businesses grow.

“I spoke to the Club about working out a way to help local businesses get involved without having to invest a huge amount of cashflow that most don’t have spare,” said Andrew. “COVID put all our plans on hold, but now more than ever was the perfect time and opportunity to support each other coming out of what was a devastating two years.” The Eagles Nest Business Club is a B2B networking group that gives
business owners a glimpse into the inner sanctum of a Corporate Partnership and opportunity to meet and potentially do business with other local business owners within the group. “Andrew has a real passion for networking and providing opportunities for businesses of all levels all across the Northern Beaches to be part of the Sea Eagles family,” said Sea Eagles Chief Commercial Officer, Luke Tucker. “Already there are over thirty businesses across a wide range of different industries signed up and ready to start benefiting from being part of the Eagles Nest Business Club. “Our goal with this program is to generate strong business amongst the group that then helps to move Eagles Nest Business Club members up into becoming higher level Corporate Partners with the Club moving forward.” There will be monthly networking events for the members to attend to get to know each other with the goal of everyone referring business to each other. Included in the Eagles Nest Business Club membership are tickets to the Eagles Nest Corporate Hospitality Suite that is another new initiative that brings B2B networking together
with a corporate game day hospitality experience at 4 Pines Park, Brookvale. All Eagles Nest Business Club members also get a listing with website clickthrough link as a member of the Eagles Nest Business Club on the Partners page of the Sea Eagles website. SONS OF THE EAST
KIRRAH AMOSA
WORDS: + PHOTOGRAPHY: BEEHIVE PR
Local Australian band, Sons of the East, are an under-theradar success story, racking up millions of streams and selling out shows across Europe without ever straying from their independent roots. And like their musical heroes, they built that impressive following through exceptional original songs, an irresistible vocal blend, and a little bit of luck. Growing up on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, band members Jack Rollins (vocals/ guitar), Nic Johnston (vocals/ keys) and Dan Wallage (guitar/banjo) have been friends since childhood. Now, with an international fan base and a strong foothold in the U.S., they are completing work on their first full-length album and attracting early attention through singles such

as “You Might Think,” “On My Way,” and “Fool Me.” “The longer we’ve gone on, the more we realise the better stuff we write harkens back to the music we grew up listening to,” says Nic, citing The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac as examples. “Harmony has been a big part of what we do for a while now. It’s so powerful when you hear a song with three-part harmony, especially when it’s done live and it’s done well.” The musical chemistry stems from the friendship they’ve developed since their teenage years. Dan explains, “Before we did any of this, we were mates and that’s the underlying reason why we’ve kept on doing it. That’s made it so much easier.”
When their 2013 music video for “Hold On” landed on an influential blog, it proved to be a break-out moment. A festival booker in Europe happened to hear them online and offered them a gig. The shows pulled in hundreds of fans in cities where Sons of the East had never played. The band is preparing to release their first full-length album and attracting early attention through singles such as “You Might Think,” “On My Way,” “Fool Me” and “Undone”. Sons of the East are playing at a free performance at The Deck at Pittwater RSL on Monday 25 April 2022 from 5pm.

MICHAEL JAMES KEANE Indie folk country NEW ALBUM
‘Wandering Bull’
Emerging with wicked hooks and a vocal presence that is impossible to ignore, Canberra R&B artist Kirrah Amosa is an absolute breath of fresh air. With her new single ‘Possessive’, Kirrah brings the type of energy R&B fans have been riding hard for within the genre in recent years: confident and passionate, with a unique sense of edgy cool threaded throughout. Late night beats and rhythms are a strong foundation for Kirrah’s hypnotic R&B vocals as they weave around a narrative that is pretty straight forward: ‘a loving reminder,’as Kirrah says, to ‘keep your hands and eyes on your side of the table.’

There is a playful energy within the song that keeps Kirrah’s self-awareness in check. On this record, she acknowledges the darker side of herself, but also that through dark times, she has emerged into a healthier space where she is at peace with her being. “2020/2021 bestowed on me the best of the worst; crushed my dreams, dissolved years of hard work, ended my relationship, introduced me to my new bestie, anxiety, and helped me understand that the niggling feeling in the back of my head wasn’t motivation to be healthier – it was body dysmorphia. “2022 is officially the new year of birth as I have completely shed all remnants
of the shame and doubt that fuelled my being and have fully embraced my good and semi-toxic traits e.g., ‘Possessive’.“ “Instead of entering the always-vicious screening cycle with a new potential partner, feel free to play them ‘Possessive’. Let ‘em know what to expect, and if they get surprised by your ‘passion’ (or emotion-filled mood swings), that’s on them,” says Kirrah. This year will see Kirrah unveil more new music than ever before; a treat for fans around the country who have been following her journey as not just a talented singer.

Jervis Bay duo Debbies are back with their melodic punk rock in ‘Let You Know’. Following off a year that saw a growing fanbase, Noah Egan and Alex Robertson have kicked things up a notch with their new sounds. Wrapped in stylistic references and throwbacks to the likes of Blink 182, The Story So Far and more contemporary Australian projects like Ceres, Luca Brasi and Lincoln Le Fevre and a recent revival of American punk rock, ‘Let You Know’ comes with heart on its sleeve. “We wanted to show a more mature and upgraded side of Debbies that we felt like we hadn’t done yet. We’ve been inspired by the punk rock
revival that has been going on in the American music scene lately. This made us keen on producing some more punkish tones where we think we’ve landed somewhere between what our fans already love, and a taste of the direction we are taking Debbies in,” said Noah and Alex. “In trying to create a different style of songwriting, we steered away from the topics we usually write about. “After stringing together personal experiences, writing lyrics with my girlfriend and playing the song countless times, it felt like we ended up with the most real Debbies song we have created so far,” said Noah.

40,000 years of Beaches Culture LAURIE BIMSON RECKONS HE KNOWS A THING OR TWO ABOUT CULTURE. HE’S BEEN LIVING IT FOR 70 YEARS, PASSING THE TEACHINGS ONTO HIS OWN KIDS AND EDUCATING OTHERS FOR THE PAST 13 YEARS. OH YEAH, WE SHOULD ALSO MENTION HE’S LEANING ON HIS PEOPLE’S 40,000 YEARS OF LIVED EXPERIENCE. A FAIR RESUME, WOULDN’T YOU SAY? Laurie is a proud Garigal man from Guringai country, which takes in Manly-Warringah as part of its huge catchment area. Northern Beaches’ Indigenous numbers are small, but their importance to Aboriginal history is hugely significant.
WORDS: ADAM LUCIUS / PHOTOGRAPHY: WOTSO BROOKVALE
This area is considered one of the busiest places for Aboriginal rock art in Australia and played a major, albeit involuntary, role in white settlement. Laurie has made it his goal to educate not only his own people, but also the white population about Guringai’s standing and history in Aboriginal culture. He has been operating Guringai Aboriginal Tours since 2009, taking groups on bush walks through his people’s land and showing first-hand how his ancestors survived – and thrived – for centuries. “My ambition in life is to teach people more about my ancestors, about the land they’re living on, how we looked after it and how it all works,” he said. “I’m passionate about educating people.“
“I’ll get 20 people in my tour groups and sometimes you’ll see somebody there under sufferance, but I’ll generally win them over by the end of it. “I’ve got a way people seem to like. You’ve got to make learning culture a fun thing. Educate, not lecture.” Born in Narrabeen and raised in Frenchs Forest, Laurie believes there is a willingness to learn more about Aboriginal culture. But because it’s not in our faces, it’s been pushed to one side for too long. “Most of the traditional owners in this area, our skin’s not that dark,” Laurie, who grew up wishing his skin was darker, explained. “I didn’t go broadcasting it (his Aboriginality) too much because you got all these little questions. “As soon as you broadcast it, people ask, ‘Well, what percentage are you?’ “Everyone around here has their own life and are living in their own little world, and it (Aboriginal culture) hasn’t been pushed at them enough.” Laurie is doing his bit to ensure that changes. He said, “The funny thing is I see people going to the dog park and using their ball thrower, and they wonder where the design came from.” “Take a look at the Aboriginal woomera (spear-throwing device), and there you go.”
“I explain the engineering of a boomerang to my tour groups. If the Wright brothers had come and seen us a long time ago, they would have got those planes up there a lot faster. We could have sorted that out for them. “One of the most important learnings from Aboriginal culture is looking after the land better. The white man doesn’t look after the land very well. “We’re still building houses in flood plains and close to bushfire zones. “We need to learn and educate about how the environment works. “I take it for granted that I know these things, but it’s amazing the amount of people that don’t even think about it.” The key, according to Laurie, is to get to people at a young age in the hopes they pass on the message to their elders. “I work on the younger generation and ask them to go home and tell their parents about the boomerang and how we build houses and farming,” he continued. “I love teaching children about our ways and how my ancestors taught their kids, and the general history of my people and early white settlement / invasion of our country. “That bit hurts a bit but needs to be told. “I feel we are making some really good progress. Aboriginal culture, just in the last few years, has been more accepted.” •

WORKSPACE
24 // Social
As if we needed more encouragement to never leave the Northern Beaches. Now that flexible workspace provider, WOTSO, has arrived in Brookvale, providing you with the perfect option for work-life balance. For those unfamiliar, WOTSO began operating in 2014. Fast forward to today, and WOTSO boasts nineteen flexible workspaces Australia wide two of those sites happen to be situated right here on the Northern Beaches.
WOTSO Manly, situated directly across from the beautiful Manly Beach at 19 -21 South Steyne Street, features surfboard racks for members’ use, coastal-inspired murals on the walls and a rooftop perfect for a quick surf check or lunch in the sunshine. The second Northern Beaches site 2 Ada Avenue, Brookvale - is the latest addition to the WOTSO family. Officially opening this month, WOTSO Brookvale is immediately identifiable by the incredible artwork and décor by local artist, Michael Black. Exuding a laid-back vibe on-brand for the beachside suburb, WOTSO offers a professional environment for businesses of any size to run their business in a productive and vibrant space. Businesses come to WOTSO and end up making a home. Many stay for years, all
the while continuing to operate under no lock-in contracts which is WOTSO’s signature offer. Members of WOTSO appreciate the flexibility and support that allows them to scale or retract at a moment’s notice, aligning its offers in a tailored way to meet the individual business’s needs. Spend a day at WOTSO, and you will instantly understand what the hype is all about. Greeted by a friendly WOTSO Space Leader, the kitchens are fully stocked with snacks. Dogs are perched happily next to their owners, and the podcast studios are a hum of activity. Work from your desk is another option. It’s a phone booth (a mini-meeting room of sorts), one of the many break-out areas for a bit of office variety. Whilst WOTSO is flexible in nature, its presence is here to stay.

WOTSO
We joke that residents of the Northern Beaches never want to leave their suburbs, and with good reason - why would you when you have everything you need? The addition of a suburban workspace, despite the obvious reason, brings a myriad of benefits to the local communities. WOTSO is all about community and believes it to be the core of what the business does. With every site it opens, WOTSO is conscious of supporting a localised way of living. Through WOTSO attracting businesses, there is an automatic generation of localised spending, collaboration, and growth partnerships. The Friends of WOTSO initiative takes this one step further. WOTSO partners with local businesses which provide WOTSO members with discounts or other specifically tailored benefits to enjoy at their discretion – a win-win for all.
Suburban workspaces give you the best of both worlds - they get you out of the house and provide you with a professional work environment surrounded by like-minded individuals getting work done. Similarly, they allow you to remain close enough to home to pick the kids up after school, make that early gym class and spend time with the family. Working near to home but not at home allows us that work-life balance we’re all constantly striving for. WOTSO has remained “industry agnostic” from the outset, providing workspace solutions for companies across a spectrum of industries of all sizes at any stage of their business lifecycle. Whether you need a desk for a day, something more permanent or a workplace that is surfboard friendly, WOTSO will have a workspace solution for you. •
Flexible workspaces are undoubtedly the future of work, with the past few years highlighting how valuable no lockin contracts for office space really are. While it’s great to have the option to Work From Home (WFH), the reality can often be the antithesis to productivity.

THE MAN BEHIND THE PAINTWORK.
Local Sydney artist, Michael Black has created a real wow factor in Brookvale with his incredible mural on WOTSO’s co-working space. His vivid, larger-than-life mural brings the space to life, adding colour, movement and joy to the local community. Michael, tell us where your art career began? I’ve always had an interest in drawing from a young age and a wild imagination, so I guess my art career started as soon as I could draw. It got more serious reaching the later years of high school when I had some encouraging individuals who championed me to push myself and further this general interest I had in creativity and painting. Completing a BA in fine arts helped me develop my practice and gave me a broad exploration of skills from graphic design and media to working with more hands-on elements such as painting, drawing, and even sculpture. It was also great to rub shoulders with other creatives during that time who are on a similar path. Would you consider yourself foremost a street artist? Who are the street artists you look up to? I’ll probably just say I’m an artist in general. I look up to a lot of Sydney-based artists who have helped me along with my career path and encouraged me – such as Nico Green and Alex Lehours. Have you always lived in Sydney? What do you think of the street art that Sydney has to offer? Yep, born and bred in Sydney. There is a lot of room for growth and opportunity for artists throughout the Sydney landscape. I would love to see more councils and local businesses embrace the value in engaging with public art, and I feel it would be mutually beneficial for the community. What do you take into consideration before beginning large pieces of public artworks? I try and look at the architecture of the existing space and what aesthetic already exists within the shape of the building. There is also a lot of logistical assessing that you need to consider such as scissor lift access, powerlines, windows, wall surface, and even sun exposure that all need to be factored into budgets and timelines. How do you feel when you see your completed murals and know you have contributed to the aesthetic of an area/environment? It feels so amazing to have other individuals partner and appreciate your work in the same way you do. It’s best when you work with a client who permits you to individualise their space and make it a significant location. What exciting things are coming up for you in 2022? Well, we just had our first baby! So that’s been by far the most exciting thing already. But in regards to work, I’ve got a bunch of public art projects that I’m excited to partake in. I’m also having a solo show in late March this year at The Rocks in Sydney. I’m looking forward to additionally exploring and developing my work into new spaces of public art such as sculpture and interactive public art. •

A SMALL GROUP OF LOCALS LIVING ON THE NORTHERN BEACHES WANTED TO CELEBRATE WHERE THEY LIVED, RAISE AWARENESS FOR MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES SUCH AS DEMENTIA, ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE, DEPRESSION, AND ANXIETY DISORDERS, AND HAVE SOME FUN. For one local resident, Mick Harrold and his mate, the goal was to swim all of the ocean rockpools around the area in one day. This event was an opportunity for more than just a couple of friends. So, in October 2021, a date was set for everyone to come to the big Ocean Rockpool Tour on January 15th 2022. Mental health has become an international issue in the past years, with older and younger onset cases of Alzheimer’s. One man, Bill, was recently diagnosed with Younger Onset Alzheimer’s Disease. His friends decided to make it a fundraiser to support Bill and others and improve their own health. “We wanted to support our mate Bill and improve our
28 // Social
own health and wellbeing,” said Mick. The charities the team chose to support were Lifeline and Vinnies — both fantastic organisations. They also reached out to local businesses 7th Day Brewery, Sale Pepe Pizzeria and Budgy Smuggler to help out. The ocean rockpools on the Northern Beaches are a local icon of sorts. There are 14 ocean rockpools on the Beaches, 15 if you count Fairlight pool in North Harbour. Built during the 1930s depression, the rock pools have always been a fun and safe source of enjoyment, but also a place that many locals have learned to swim at, for decades. “We live in a lucky country, in one of the best cities in the world and one of the finest neighbourhoods. “We wanted to have some fun for our own health and wellbeing, and while doing so, raise awareness to a range of mental health issues. We want to help remove the stigma sometimes associated with mental health disorders and raise funds for affected local disadvantaged people in need of money and support,” says Mick.
Organisers, Mick Harrold, Bill Yeates, Simon Rorke and Peter Yeates led the charge for a healthier life. The 22-strong team and their bus driver Peter Farrell started their swimming adventure at Palm Beach and finished their day at Fairy Bower Manly. The day offered an opportunity to pause from daily activities and reflect on what’s important: friends, mental health, and physical wellbeing. In this new era, everyone can improve their mental and physical health with some exercise and time with friends. Finally celebrating their day at the 7th Day Brewery in Brookvale, the group of ocean rockpool swimmers raised over $10,000 for charities including Lifeline Northern Beaches, Vinnies Northern Beaches and Dementia Alliance International (DAI). It’s amazing to see the dedication of the people on the Northern Beaches. Every action, word and dollar counts. This is a fine example of the culture on the Northern Beaches; people that make things happen. You can reach out to find out more on this team of healthy individuals by visiting www. The iconic new look Manly Pacific On a beautiful morning, in the recently renovated Manly Pacific, John Vickery from Beaches COVERED. caught up with General Manager, Dylan Cole, to find out the importance of reconnecting people with travel. NEW LOOK MANLY PACIFIC
G’day Dylan. The grand old dame of Manly has nally had a makeover. Fantastic news. The rooms look super stylish. Tell me about the inspiration behind the design from the artwork in the foyer to the overall styling of the new look Manly Pacic. G’day John and welcome to Manly Pacific. One of the most immediate changes we have undertaken is reclaiming our original name, Manly Pacific. Manly has an iconic heritage and locals have always referred to the hotel as Manly Pacific so it was a natural decision that we embraced the nostalgia felt by our local community. The influence of the local spirit flows right through into the design of the hotel. When anyone comes to Manly, they feel the change of pace and that’s exactly what happens the moment you step inside the hotel. We’ve moved away from the traditional hotel to ensure we offer a local flavour. The design and style has been one aspect, but we are crafting our authentic story - the signature of Manly Pacific’s personality and bringing that to life. We have partnered with local photographer, Murray Fraser, who focuses on the early morning lifestyle of beaches up and down the Northern Beaches. The photo you see here in the lobby captures the essence of our hotel it was taken at Freshwater at dawn.
30 // Social
There is a lot of creative talent on the beaches, and we want to be able to do more than just offer a night’s stay but be a platform to showcase what the area has to offer. Coco Republic was asked to create the interior look and are renowned for beautiful bold pieces of statement furnishings. How have they transformed the vibe of the hotel room spaces? It’s been such a perfect collaboration between Manly Pacific and Coco Republic. The partnership has provided us with a design that answers the true nature of the hotel – communicating a Pacific aesthetic with a welcoming and homely air in all areas of the redefined space. They have used natural elements, colours and raw materials that have been juxtaposed with stronger aesthetics. For example, using travertine stone for the bedside tables which exemplifies the sandy grain found along the beaches. We’ve been able to bring the outside in using natural textures as you would find in a beautiful coastal home. The rooms are contemporary and create a sense of calm drawing the ocean into the room. The palette of colours used also imitates the smooth gradient of the sky over the sea that Manly projects at different times of the day. The new world has brought about many challenges across the hospitality
tourist and accommodation sector. How are you meeting this shift in the mindset of the post-pandemic market? It’s been difficult during lockdown and has had an impact on our community. What we’ve found is that there hasn’t been a shift in mindset as such but more of a desire to return to what people have missed out on. People want to reconnect with others and do what they love, especially travel again. With the borders well and truly open now, we’ve seen guests returning to celebrate key milestones such as birthdays and anniversaries which they haven’t been able to do for a long time. It has been wonderful to see new memories being created once again! The hotel’s new style suits the business market as well as the high-end tourist clientele. Was this the intent? Are these key markets driving the recovery of the sector or is the local staycation market a new goal? The lockdown not only impacted us but local businesses in Manly. As a destination, Manly offers such a wide range of different experiences from fine dining and culture to health and well-being. There are so many hidden gems around Manly and the Northern Beaches. We’ve found locals that are keen on exploring their own backyard.
MANLY PACIFIC GENERAL MANAGER, DYLAN COLE
We’ve also seen the rise of the discerning traveller and we know that when guests stay at Manly Pacific, they are craving a personalised experience away from the mass, which is what we are offering to our guests. We want to encourage our guests to support local businesses and boutique stores in and around Manly and the Northern Beaches. The new style of the hotel is listening to what we hear our guests want and that’s what we’re committed to. The business traveler has evolved. They’re not in your traditional suit. They’re unleashing personal passions and are working remotely and demanding a work-life balance. Manly offers the close proximity to the CBD yet offers fresh air, a sea breeze and a relaxed pace. I have heard you have a new offering for businesses that need a space to work for the day, but not necessarily need to sleep overnight. What’s this about? With companies now making it the norm for employees to work from home, we wanted to give Sydneysiders a change of scenery where they can have the option to have a meeting, go for a surf and then grab a quick shower. We’ve developed a stay that offers the day use of the Superior Ocean View Room at an accessible price point. The stay includes unlimited coffee pods, lunch at Bistro Manly and a cocktail when they
finish their day. They also get access to the rooftop pool, gym and a personalised Manly Pacific Spotify playlist.
I believe the conference and events level are next on the agenda for a makeover?
The French Bistro is a hidden gem in Manly. What are your top 3 dishes across the menu, and if I’m drinking cocktails, what’s not to miss?
We’ve always played a significant part of celebrating key milestones for our guests, and we will continue to ensure we deliver a space that our community can be proud of.
I personally find it very hard to go past the steak frites at Bistro Manly. It’s not your ordinary steak frites. It goes well beyond expectations using a 120 day dry aged bavette with a mustard seed salsa verde, pommes frites and red wine jus. Chef Ryan has a keen eye on presentation too, and the Pipis and clams bouillabaisse with French beans is a show stopper. For desserts, we’ve seen even those concerned about their waistline unable to resist the Rum and Raisin Bombe Alaska with brandy flambé – it’s a beauty. Bistro Manly incorporates a mix of local and French wines. It’s a well-considered wine list that has been carefully curated. We also partner with ‘Manly Spirits’, another local gem who have a range of botanical vodkas and gins who take their inspiration from the coastline too. Our most popular cocktail is the Espresso Martini, combining the Manly Spirits local Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur and Vodka Grape. You’ll have to stay back and try one, John.
The design of the Conference and Events rooms is led by Coco Republic. They’re refreshing and tailoring the bespoke interiors to create a space that is not only inviting but relevant. From an intimate day meeting to a large corporate conference, there is a lot of flexibility. It’s the ideal place to create special memories. What’s your favourite new space in the hotel? I’ve been able to have a sneak preview of the suites, and we’re only weeks away till they are unveiled. The space is extraordinary, combining comfort and style with a unique aesthetic. It takes in the jaw dropping panoramic view of Manly Beach, setting the tone of a relaxed room, filled with class and sophistication. Final words. As the General Manager of the leading hotel in Manly, every day you get up and come to Manly Pacific to... Create lasting experiences for our incredible guests and my extraordinary team! •

With only weeks to go before the next federal election, Australian voters are once again left to choose between two uninspiring, lacklustre candidates to lead the country post pandemic. In years gone by, whether a voter liked or disliked a candidate for Prime Minister, at least they had an idea of what they stood for. What is the vision for Australia over the next 2, 5 or 10 years, let alone the following 50?

Since Scott Morrison won the last ‘miracle’ election, he has had to deal with bushfires, COVID 19 and now the floods. It’s easy to generalise and say that he has mishandled these problems, but I doubt there have been many leaders in modern Australian history that have a more challenging term in government. First, a mistimed holiday to Hawaii with his family during the bushfires had him on the back foot. He then had a chance to redeem himself in the eyes of the public with the outbreak of the pandemic. Initially setting up the National Cabinet with the state Premiers and Territory Chief Ministers, Morrison took control and was rightly given credit, along with the Premiers and Chief Ministers, for steering the country through the start of the crisis. Then came the vaccine, and despite Morrison promising that any Australian who wanted a vaccine by October last year could get one (which ended up pretty much being the case), he was roundly criticised for a slow rollout. More recently, he is copping flak for taking too long to declare a
32 // Social
national disaster regarding the floods in NSW and QLD. These are all fair judgements of Morrison’s performance, but going forward, what does this man stand for? How does he see this country’s future? It will either be him or Anthony Albanese who will be this country’s next PM. Aside from personal attacks on the current PM, where does Albanese differ? What is his vision? Can anybody tell me if he has any plans to reform the economy which is stalling with no wage growth, and possible high inflation and interest rates? Neither of these two men inspire any confidence in me whatsoever. On a local level, Mackellar MP Jason Falinski is facing a challenge from local GP, Independent Sophie Scamps. I believe her biggest test will be to convince voters that an independent in Parliament can achieve much. When I ask people what Zali Steggall’s achievements are since ousting Tony Abbott, there is no clear answer, other than ‘getting rid of Tony’. Also, I’d like to see some of these Independents go after some of the Labor Party’s ideas, otherwise the comments from some conservative commentators that they are ‘fake’ Independents will start to ring true. It promises to be another absorbing contest. Hardly anyone will give Morrison a chance last time, and to me, it seems an even bigger hill to climb this time. The bookies have Labor well in front, but the current PM is a formidable campaigner, so I think it could still go either way. •
A BRIGHTER 2022... THE RESILIENCE OF THE NORTHERN BEACHES COMMUNITY HAS ONCE AGAIN BEEN ON DISPLAY. OUR ABILITY TO BOUNCE BACK FROM LOCKDOWNS, OUR ABILITY TO GET BACK TO NORMAL LIFE AND MORE RECENTLY OUR ABILITY TO HELP EACH OTHER IN THE FACE OF DEVASTATING FLOODS HAS REMINDED ALL OF US WHAT A FANTASTIC COMMUNITY WE ARE ALL PART OF. SEEING THE RESILIENCE OF OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES, SHOPS, CAFES AND RESTAURANTS HAS BEEN REMARKABLE. I continue to work closely with our local business community, and welcome the opening of international borders which will reunite family and friends and boost international tourism opportunities. Historically, only 4% of overnight visitors to Manly have been international tourists. This is something we need to do better at. Special mention to Charlotte Rimmer, President of the Manly Business Chamber whom I nominated and was recently awarded the Local Woman of the Year Award for all her hard work and dedication to helping businesses in the Manly electorate to thrive even during the difficult times!
BUILDING A BETTER TOURISM INDUSTRY FOR MANLY The Covid Recovery Taskforce I formed in late 2022 has developed into an exciting new entity called Experience Manly. Experience Manly is a not-for-profit organisation that will help secure funding for events and initiatives to showcase Manly and its surrounds to the world. This will help increase our tourism industry which has operated well below the average for nearly a decade. The key objectives are to reactivate the Manly CBD and
engage local businesses, improve destination awareness, increase visitation and spending, boost economic recovery and social connection. The first event will start mid-April. You can expect some exciting things like light art, projection mapping, oversized signage, street scrabble, a street maze, concerts, outdoor cinema and more!
FORMER MANLY HOSPITAL SITE UPDATE The old Manly Hospital site has been busy with construction activity over the past few months as Australia’s first hospice for young adults is built. The major concrete pour has occurred and the second floor of the facility is now visible. This marks a significant milestone in the development of the $19.5 million project, dedicated to caring for young people from across NSW with a lifelimiting illness. The facility will provide young people and their families with a tranquil, supportive environment at the most difficult of times by providing respite care, counselling, symptom management and end-of-life care. Construction of the facility is due for completion later this year. The remainder of the former hospital site will be converted into a community health and wellbeing precinct.
MANLY COVE UPGRADE I spoke recently in Parliament about the upgrade project for Manly Cove. Plans released in December show how Manly will benefit from $205 million in Maritime stimulus spending. The existing Wharf 3 wooden jetty will be upgraded with a new hydraulic platform with a waiting area that will have fixed seating and weather protection with proper accessible gangways.
James Griffin The project also includes enhancing the former sea life aquarium site by removing the aquarium building and reconnecting the Pavilion and heritage building with the promenade. There is also an opportunity to improve public waterfront access with the possibility of a small wharf for recreational vessels. Detailed environmental studies will form part of the environmental impact assessment for both projects to identify potential environmental impacts at an early stage in the project development. You can keep up-to-date and have a look at the interactive portal by visiting www.caportal.com.au/tfnsw/manly-cove
DELIVERING FOR OUR COMMUNITY Some news you might have missed: • The $3.89 million upgrade of North Head National Park scenic area is nearing completion • Harbord Kindergarten will get a new upgraded playground • Northern Beaches Secondary College will receive $31,790 for a new hightech plasma cutter so they can learn important future trade skills • Important work to rehabilitate Harbord and Curl Curl Lagoon will continue thanks to a $50,000 grant provided to the Northern Beaches Council Finally, I will continue to work hard to deliver for our community. If there is anything I can help you with, please don’t hesitate to contact my office. •

A POSITIVE FUTURE IN AN UNCERTAIN WORLD. Jason Falinski FIVE SHORT YEARS AGO, I STOOD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE PARLIAMENT, TO UTTER MY FIRST WORDS IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. I MARVELLED THEN, AS I DO NOW, AT HOW FEW NATIONS ON EARTH COULD TAKE THE SON OF A MIGRANT, WHO WHEN HE ARRIVED SPOKE NOT A SINGLE WORD OF ENGLISH, AND ELECT HIM TO THE HIGHEST DECISION MAKING BODY IN THE LAND.
In our nation, to serve others is a gift given by those you serve. I am grateful to our country and grateful to my community for the opportunity to serve. When I gave that first speech, I ended it by saying that I believed Australia’s best days were ahead of us because we have so much to hope for and so little to fear. I am reminded of that as I look at Narrabeen Lagoon, badly flooded this week, along with homes in Manly, businesses in Narrabeen, Brookvale and schools in Manly Vale. Some homes were lost, people evacuated, and lives were turned upside down. But I also witnessed the resolve of our community, the instinctive response of so many to look to others, to help where help was needed, and to care for those who could not care for themselves. In our time of need, once more, we found each other. None of the many challenges we have faced in the last three years, both here and around the world, have diminished us. We have not been found wanting. These challenges have brought us together, and in doing so, made us stronger. Like you, I too worry about the future geopolitical tensions, climate change, energy prices, housing affordability and brittle supply chains just to name a few. But the lesson of our history
34 // Social
is that we only succeed when we face our challenges front on. When this Federation was founded, its promise was for the brave not the timid. Our Founders called to those who wanted to live in a place that did not care who you were or where you came from, but only what you were willing to give. A land where if you had a go, you got a go. A nation whose children would be afforded the best opportunities to develop their talents. A nation that understood that care and compassion came from friends, our families, a community and not a government department. That true fairness comes from equality of opportunity, not outcome. And that when one of us have a freedom removed, all of us are less free. That these are things worth protecting and preserving because they are sacred. No country is perfect, and we are not a perfect nation, nor are we a perfect people. However, our mission is. This election is not about votes. It is about a commitment to that first mission of opportunity for all. Can we commit to young Australians, to once more create affordable housing so they too can share in the Australian Dream? Can we make the lives of working Australians better and easier?
Can we secure the financial future of people who worked and saved all their lives so that they may have a comfortable retirement? And for those who are yet to be born, will we protect and preserve our planet? The answer, of course, is yes. Each of us have a path we have trodden on to this point. I was born in Manly to a migrant father who met my Mum while selling clothes to her shop in Collaroy. We grew up in a fibro cottage in Belrose, with four kids and one bathroom. It gave a very real world meaning to the economic concept of first mover advantage. The house’s most notable feature was a snake in the roof to keep away the possums. My parents founded a computer company that became Australia’s largest. They built a house, a family, and a community around this business. But that dream was shattered, like so many others, during the recession “we had to have.” I watched as the banks, the lawyers and the accountants strip everything for themselves like locusts. Those times left their scars, but good ones. I made a promise to myself that I would always fight for a fairer Australia and I tried to live by that promise every day since. We face choices about how we live every day. In the coming weeks, there is
another choice, who is going to govern us for the next three years? There is much at stake.
because we have a strong economy. Our economic security is paying for our national security.
Can our economy deliver real wage increases not just create jobs? Can we invent new industries, make housing affordable, project strength both here and abroad, as well as show the world that reaching Net Zero is both possible and profitable?
Our record of economic management and reform have ensured the lowest unemployment rate in nearly five decades with the highest participation rate on record. I believe you grow an economy by putting people first – that’s why we have cut taxes again and again because you are better at spending your money than the government.
Or will we turn away from these complex challenges and pretend they can be solved with three-line policies on websites and vague promises by the untested about doing things differently. These are times of consequences and that approach – of imagining the world as you want it to be, rather than facing as it is, won’t cut it. Chanting slogans hidden inside clichés, wrapped in other people’s unearned money is meaningless. Just saying ‘Climate Action Now’ without a plan to Net Zero is one of many examples of this approach. You have to know how you will keep Australia strong. There is a great battle going on between liberal democracies in which governments serve people and authoritarian states in which people serve governments. That is why we have been making the most significant investments in our defence force since World War II. We’ve been strengthening our partnerships with neighbours, like minded countries and our allies as well. The AUKUS agreement and its commitment to build nuclear propelled submarines is another major step in strengthening Australia’s defences. We can make these investments in this defence force transformation
As well, Australia has come out of the COVID-19 pandemic with one of the world’s lowest rates of death and some of the highest rates of vaccination. We’ve led the world protecting lives and livelihoods. We built a world class policy response - JobKeeper, massive small business support, Telehealth, pandemic payments – all the while working together. We can take pride in that. As your elected representation, I have fought to keep us prosperous and to make Australia fairer. I’ve brought down reports on creating a taxpayer advocate, establishing a retail corporate bond market, reducing regulations and taxes on employee share schemes, reforming bankruptcy laws, competition law and housing affordability. The bipartisan Economics Committee that I chair has held APRA, ASIC, the big four banks, Big Super and the RBA to account. I have long advocated for NetZero and it is now government policy. We are taking a technology not taxes approach to reducing emissions, and we are doing it in a way that will create new jobs, secure our energy supplies, and not put pressure on energy prices. Along with the community, I said no to PEP-11. This will protect our local environment for this generation and the
next by stopping gas and oil exploration off the Northern Beaches. I believe in strong communities because you can’t have a strong country unless you have strong communities. We have funded new phone towers at Belrose and Cottage Point, invested in the IT infrastructure of local schools, provided $7 million to fund local roads and school zones, and provided major funding boosts for the upgrading of Long Reef Surf Life Saving Club and support for Manly Warringah Football Association. I have also been working closely with local businesses. I stayed close with them during the pandemic, and I’ve sought to encourage and harness the innovation of local businesses and young entrepreneurs like BioCarbon and Device Technologies. And there is more to do. We have a great new hospital in Frenchs Forest, but it means little if you can’t get there if the Wakehurst Parkway is blocked. We must continue the fight to have Wakehurst Parkway upgraded and we need to start Beaches Link today. This election is about choice. The choice of which path we go down on our journey to a more perfect nation. This is a journey without end, but it is our generation’s responsibility to advance as far down that path as possible. We on the Northern Beaches have seen that alone, some might go fast, but together, we can all go far. •

5 STEPS TO NET ZERO
Zali Steggall
AUSTRALIA NEEDS PROACTIVE LEADERSHIP AND A SENSIBLE PLAN TO GET TO NET ZERO EMISSIONS SO WE CAN POSITION OUR ECONOMY FOR SUCCESS, AND SAFEGUARD OUR COMMUNITIES AGAINST DISASTROUS CLIMATE IMPACTS THAT ARE ALREADY UNFOLDING.
WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY: ZALI STEGGALL, OAM, MP
We are careening from ‘unprecedented’ disaster to disaster, from droughts to fires to floods, with deafening silence from the media and the federal government on the root cause: global warming supercharging these events. Whilst immediate attention is needed on rescue and recovery efforts, we cannot mindlessly sleepwalk to the next disaster. We need to plan for a safer future. It was only recently in early March that we experienced flooding never seen before on the Northern Beaches and surrounding areas. Incredibly, we watched cars marooned in major intersections, torrents of water rushing through local businesses and inundating our civic centres. Like the smoke that choked our cities for months during the terrible 2019-20 summer bushfires, this is a real and present reminder of the impacts of climate change due to global warming we face in Warringah and Australia.
36 // Social
The recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report spells out the compounding and cascading consequences for our community if we fail in our mission to get to a Net Zero economy. Putting aside the environmental and health cost, our local and national economies simply won’t cope with repeated disasters and disruption. The cost of natural disasters is estimated to increase to over $1.2 trillion in the next forty years. Now that’s a number you don’t see front and centre of election debates! It is so important that even amongst the current disaster and recovery efforts, we also focus on solutions and longterm planning. Australia is at the front line of global warming. The IPCC singles Australia out as one of the most climate change vulnerable developed countries in the world. We must better prepare

It has the overwhelming support of every sector from business, industry, academics, unions and community groups as it provides a clear legislated framework with attainable long term targets...” and mitigate by reducing emissions, assessing risks and adapting. The ‘5 Steps to Net Zero’ plan that I have released would position Australia as a global leader, both in keeping its people safe and in riding the wave of economic

opportunities of the global transition to Net Zero. The 5 Steps provide the roadmap to significantly reduce our emissions and adapt in this critical decade to 2030. Importantly, the 5 Steps are built on expert advice, with policies from rapidly decarbonising our energy sector, cleaning up transport, transforming industry and futureproofing agriculture. A suite of necessary policies are included - from a ‘Future Transmission Fund’ to ensure our transmission and grid are not holding back the uptake of renewable energy, to an ‘Australian Vehicle Emissions Standard’ to stop Australia becoming a dumping ground for the dirtiest vehicles in the OECD, to a ‘Fair Employment Transition Agency’ to help regional affected communities transition to new clean industries and sustainable

jobs. This plan can deliver over 250,000 jobs and $680 billion in economic gains. Passing the Climate Change Bill that I have introduced to Parliament is the very important first step. It has the overwhelming support of every sector from business, industry, academics, unions and community groups as it provides a clear legislated framework with attainable long term targets and mandated national risk assessments and adaptation planning. A core component of the Climate Change Bill is the requirement for an independent Climate Change Commission to conduct ‘National Climate Change Risk Assessments,’ which assesses the key risks to Australia’s economy, communities and environment. Based on the findings of these assessments, the Government is then required to
REGENERATE AUSTRALIA: 8MHA OF REFORESTATION BY 2030
develop and implement its own ‘National Adaptation Plans’ to address those risks that have been identified. We need these risk assessments in order to prepare and protect communities. The Morrison Government has to date blocked debate on the bills, refusing to meaningfully address the impacts and causes of global warming. By downplaying the risks and threats to our communities as unpredictable, ‘one-in-ahundred-year’ or misleadingly ‘one-inone-thousand-year’ events, it avoids the clear need to do more to prepare, adapt and mitigate. It is abundantly clear that national risk assessments are urgently needed. Keeping our communities safe and prosperous needs action, clear plans and leadership. CLIMATE CHANGE IS HERE BUT THERE IS STILL HOPE FOR OUR FUTURE. Dr Sophie Scamps
WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY: DR SOPHIE SCAMPS
DR SOPHIE SCAMPS’ PASSION FOR POLITICS AND THE ENVIRONMENT SHINES THROUGH IN EVERYTHING SHE DOES. WORKING AND LIVING ON THE NORTHERN BEACHES FOR 22 YEARS, SHE HAS DEVELOPED A STRONG UNDERSTANDING FOR HER COMMUNITY. HER DETERMINATION TO MAKE A CHANGE SEES HER STANDING AS AN INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE FOR THE NEXT FEDERAL ELECTION WITH NO ALLEGIANCE OTHER THAN TO HER ELECTORATE. At the time of writing this article, parts of the Northern Beaches from Narrabeen to Manly were underwater due to unprecedented floods and heavy rain hitting our community. I hope that by the time you read this latest issue of Beaches COVERED., the thousands of people and small businesses impacted have recovered and are starting to get back on their feet. While some may try to use the floods to deflect and tell us ‘now isn’t the time to talk about climate change’ – I completely disagree.
38 // Social
In fact, my concern about how climate change will impact our community and the government’s lack of action are some reasons I decided to run as an Independent candidate for Mackellar at the next Federal election. What worries me most is that while it is clear climate change is already impacting our community, the government seems more interested in supporting their mates in the fossil fuel industry than in taking action to protect our community. The record rain and floods that impacted the east coast during March, including us here on the Northern Beaches, were unprecedented and driven by climate change.
to prevent coastal erosion affecting more of our beautiful beaches. As a GP, I also see climate change as a health emergency. I still remember just two summers ago, while working as a GP in Narrabeen, I saw many patients suffering from breathing problems caused by the smoke and air pollution from the Black Summer bushfires. While we’re already seeing the impacts of climate change, we can still prevent the worst effects from occurring. But the window of opportunity is closing fast. The next three years are absolutely critical to the type of future we want to see, which is why this election is so vitally important, and why I am standing to be Mackellar’s Independent voice in Canberra.
I know some people that live near Narrabeen Lagoon have now been evacuated twice in the last three years as the risk of floods increases.
Now is the time for us all to stand up, and do whatever we can to help limit climate change. So what can you do?
Coastal erosion is also a real problem here on the Northern Beaches, as people living in Collaroy and elsewhere on the coast know all too well. We need to act on climate change
Firstly, vote for a candidate that wants to see serious action on climate change – this election is our final chance to get real action on climate change through our Parliament.
DR SOPHIE SCAMPS WITH HER FAMILY
Talk to your friends and family about why addressing climate change immediately is so important. Volunteer your time or donate what you can afford to give to charities that are tackling the climate crisis. Finally, vote with your wallet – support brands and companies that are committed to Net Zero emissions, renewable energy and that leave a positive impact on the planet. While there are many things we can all do to tackle climate change, as an Independent MP, I will be in a powerful position to influence the direction of our national climate policies. If elected, I promise to: • Work with the government of the day to set a 2030 emissions reduction target of at least 50%. This is the minimum we need to avert the worst impacts of climate change and is backed by business groups, including the Business Council of Australia, scientists and nearly all state and territory governments – but opposed by Scott Morrison. This means if you vote for a Liberal candidate, no matter what they say, you will still get the climate policies of Scott Morrison and Barnaby Joyce. • Support investment in cheaper, cleaner and more reliable renewable
energy so we hit 100% renewables as soon as possible, creating new jobs, reducing energy bills and securing Australia’s energy independence in a volatile world. • Develop a national electric vehicle policy so everyone from tradies to truckies to families and everyone in between, can afford cheaper and cleaner electric vehicles. • Introduce legislation to stop oil and gas exploration and mining off Australia’s coast and end taxpayer support for the fossil fuel industry. • Work with the government of the day to increase funding for community adaptation and resilience projects to help protect us all from the worst impacts of climate change over the coming decades. Now is the time to stand up, to be counted, and to act. I promise that as an Independent for Mackellar, I will do just that and fight every day to protect our way of life and ensure our children and grandchildren have a bright and safe future. Dr Sophie Scamps – Independent candidate for Mackellar. You can find out more about Dr. Sophie Scamps and her campaign at www.sophiescamps.com.au •
Where is Mackellar? Stretching from Dee Why in the south to Palm Beach in the north and taking in the suburbs of Duffys Forest, Terrey Hills and Davidson to the west, Mackellar is home to over 150,000 Northern Beaches locals. The electorate of Mackellar was created in 1949 and named in honour of the famous poet, Dorothea Mackellar – best known for writing ‘My Country’. The Liberal Party is the only party to ever win the seat of Mackellar and it is currently held by a backbench Liberal Party MP.

BMW ROADTEST
BAVARIAN 330i
MASTERPIECE IS SURE TO REWARD. BY JON THOMSON BMW IS ONE OF THE GREAT SUCCESS STORIES OF THE LUXURY AND PERFORMANCE CAR WORLD, FLOURISHING FROM ITS ORIGINS AS A NICHE CAR MAKER IN BAVARIA. IT HAS BECOME A LEADING LIGHT IN TERMS OF TECHNOLOGY, PERFORMANCE AND DESIRABILITY AROUND THE WORLD. WE SLIPPED BEHIND THE WHEEL OF ITS LATEST 330I SEDAN FOR A DAY OF DRIVING FUN.
Col Crawford BMW in Brookvale is the local dealer and sales person, Joel, gave us a full run-down on the turbo four cylinder before we headed out on a drive along our glorious coastline on a rare sunny break in the shocking weather we have had to endure lately.
BMW’s iDrive system has matured and allows the driver to control the large 10.25-inch flat infotainment touch screen display with ease. The audio system allows easy interface with Apple Car Play wirelessly. With a wireless charging panel, it allows you to sit your phone in a small nook to charge without being plugged in, all while playing music or displaying Google maps, etc. It is all very easy.
Confession here, we are fully paid up BMW fans and have been for a long time. The Bimmer designers have always had more flair than their colleagues at the other German car makers, and for that reason, they have more character and greater pure sporting appeal.
Our test car was finished in a beautiful shade known as Phytonic Blue, while the striking interior was trimmed with a gorgeous dark tan leather upholstery that BMW calls Vemasca Cognac. It gave the 330i a really luxurious feel, appropriately, because it was equipped with the Luxury Line trim.
We reckon the BMW 330i is the sweet spot in the BMW range, not just the BMW 3 series range. That’s because of its brilliant engine, but it is also because of it being the right fit for a lot of luxury car buyers.
While the aesthetics of a BMW are important, the Bavarians put a lot of store in the driving experience and always have done, bolstering that ethos with many successful motor sport forays over the decades.
It runs a beautiful two litre, four-cylinder turbo engine, coupled to an eight speed automatic, and of course like most BMW’s down through the years, it is rearwheel-drive, adding to that sport sedan feel and handling.
Having said that, the 330i is not a race car. It is however a high performance sedan of great accomplishment delivering rapid acceleration with razor sharp handling and road-holding.
It’s a sweet powertrain and packaged in a delightful body that has the integrity and resembles something that feels like it has been carved from a single bullet of steel. Behind the wheel, you face a beautiful dash and instrument panel bristling with the latest high tech interfaces.
It feels exceptionally well balanced, with a perfect 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution. The thick-rimmed wheel feels good in your hands with the car responding accurately and confidently to driver commands. Power from the turbo four-cylinder is tremendous, with peak torque of 400Nm
across a flat curve between 1500rpm and 4400rpm, ensuring flexible performance continuing all the way to redline at 6500rpm where maximum power of a stunning 190kW is reached. The 330i’s engine balance of performance and efficiency is a real highlight with impressive fuel consumption claimed at just 6.4L/100km. The eight-speed ZF-automatic gearbox is great either on the open road or around town. It’s terrific because it’s always grabbing the right gear with paddle shifts allowing the driver to upshift and down shift as a clutch-less manual. Our test car had a promotional price of $86,995 at Col Crawford, factoring in all of the packages and options which included the Luxury Line, Visibility package and Comfort package. The car would normally have had a drive away price of $94,635. Any way you cut it, this is a great car that rewards the driver with exhilarating performance with comfort and allure a bonus. Have a chat to the team at Col Crawford for one of these tremendous machines. •

TEXTURE IN THE KITCHEN Texture can be used in many different ways to create an amazing kitchen design. The use of textured walls, backsplashes, or even the cabinets can make a kitchen stand out. Texture can also help to reduce the feeling of being closed in, or make a room seem larger. Timber is a good choice for kitchen cabinets and feature sections, like wooden slatted walls; it adds visual interest and warmth to contemporary and traditional designs.

Our tip, don’t use your Belvedere! The cheapest bottle of Vodka will do the trick.

A century of success OUR BRAND NAME MAY BE NEW BUT WHO WE ARE TODAY RESTS ON A PROUD CENTURY OF SERVICE EXCELLENCE IN SYDNEY REAL ESTATE. REFLECTING ON 100 GOLDEN YEARS OF HELPING AUSTRALIANS FIND THEMSELVES IN A BETTER PLACE, WE’VE BUILT ON A LEGACY OF FORWARD-THINKING VISION, AMBITION AND DEVELOPMENT.
Peter Mosedale and fellow co-owner Lachlan Yeates began their real estate careers together at an agency in Freshwater. Joining forces with commercial property expert, Vincent West, they started their own agencies in Dee Why and Collaroy. In 2019 they merged the agencies, including one with direct lineage to the Weight family, and Upstate was born. We’ve been on a long and colourful journey to become the Upstate that we are today. Our story began when one of our parent companies, ‘Weight and Co’, was established in 1922. Looking back at newspaper articles from the 1950’s, when typical sales agents were selling an average of 50 properties a year, our very own Mr. Woodrow Weight was selling around 130 properties in Manly-Warringah! Weight and Co were the talk of the town, setting records in the 1940s and contributing to the development of the local community. After 100 years, some things change and others stay the same – but all for the better. From traditional selling techniques back then to the latest tech
today, we’ve always maintained the same selling integrity and supported our local communities.
A CENTURY OF SUCCESS We now have over 118,000 prospective buyers and tenants on our database, a 35% market share in the commercial real estate sector, and achieve on average 25% above the sale guide price. With a single, central office, our 80+ dedicated staff go the extra mile every single day to deliver the Upstate promise we’re known for. While we’ve grown into a big agency over the century, our track record and commitment to bespoke service has allowed us to maintain our origins as a boutique agency. Continually setting new records, our determination is what drives this growth and success for our community. Now, we have expanded our real estate services to adapt to the evolving market and to accommodate the needs of our clients, offering: • Residential and commercial property management • Residential sales and leasing • Commercial sales and leasing • Commercial asset management
• Project marketing and site amalgamation • Complementary property concierge services • Financial advice and mortgage brokering • Digital marketing and creative specialists
100 YEARS OF SERVICE While ‘Weight and Co’ worked with traditional selling methods, we have built upon this, now adopting a digitalfirst approach to meet and assist clients across different platforms at their own convenience. From Facebook and Google Advertising, YouTube, Signboards, Digital Property Reports, Chatbots, Email Marketing, Bitcoin, QR Codes and Apps – Upstate is consistently bringing people closer to their dream properties. But numbers aside, we measure our own success by the success of the people we work with. We are always honoured to be welcomed into people’s homes and given the opportunity to play a huge role in realising their goals and dreams. We’ve come so far since 1922, and we couldn’t have gone this far without you. From modest beginnings to promising futures, Upstate is here to stay for a hundred more. •

BANK VS BROKER. What is the difference and the smart choice for your finance needs. Beaches COVERED. spoke to Sam Ayliffe from Astute Manly to get the lowdown on going straight to a bank vs using a local trusted Broker.
In the mood for Flooring
The lending landscape is a mine-field, with policy so wide and varied, many consumers feel they can get the same deal, rate or lending limits, with every bank. This unfortunately couldn’t be further from the truth as we discovered. Why choose a Mortgage Broker? Over 60% of home loans written in Australia are by Mortgage Brokers. They are finance professionals who are legally obligated to act in your best interests when suggesting a loan for you. Many Mortgage Brokers do not charge upfront fees and are paid by the lender based on your loan size. The bank pays the broker, so they do not have to worry about their overheads and to give them a wider network of potential clients. A Mortgage Broker can do all the leg work, ensure the needs and objectives of the client are met, and can put forward a loan that can reasonably be expected to be approved by the bank. A win-win for everyone involved.
QUALITY TIMBER FLOORS There is nothing not to love about a natural timber look, particularly one with the inherent elegance of Plantino Native Landmark Blackbutt. Available from our friends at Choices Flooring, this flooring product will provide an organic, natural and warm feel to any interior.
With access to a wide range of lenders, you can also often ensure you have the most suitable product for your needs along with a competitive interest rate that can sometimes even be negotiated with the lender depending on the situation. Most brokers can deliver you a comprehensive service including: • Many lenders to choose from, including out-of-the-box solutions. • They have experienced teams dedicated to sourcing the right loan. • Many brokers support local schools and communities, sponsoring your local sports teams. • Many can help find and finance your cars and Commercial Vehicles. • Some brokers like Sam, also have access to insurance products for your home, car or business • Sam even has access to a Financial Adviser to assist with growing your wealth. “They really do provide you with a full scope of services, from a wide variety or sources, and this is the difference between a good broker and a bank,” says Sam Ayliffe.
WARM WOOL Serenity - Mayfair is incredibly soft, which is why the triexta fibre carpet is often chosen for bedrooms. Indulge yourself with a touch of luxury every morning when you wake up and walk barefoot on this silky soft carpet. And, because it features permanent built-in stain resistance and exceptional durability, you can enjoy life’s special moments worry-free!
“It’s about more than a service. We specialise in a relationship across your whole range of needs. You may come first to get a great home loan, but soon we are talking about how to position you in investments, vehicles, insurance and all other financial matters. “If you have a home loan over 2.5% variable, call me now! I will personally look after you. We have lenders with rebates, great deals on fixed and variable rates. We want to help you save time and money - repaying your home sooner.” Variable ra rates still remain low but for how long? Fixed interest rates are climbing and there are changes to product offerings across tthe lending landscape. With the historic lows, rates will ine inevitably move, so don’t sit on your hands and wait, challen challenge your broker today.

How does the slab construction on your site commence? Ground preparation is a milestone in the building process. It’s time to invest IN A SMARTER HOME
SMART HOME TECHNOLOGY
SOLAR EV CHARGER
Harnessing the power of the sun to reduce your energy costs, it makes sense to choose solar technology that’s smart and reliable. But where do you start? Beaches COVERED. sat down with Solarpro’s Managing Director, David Veal, to find out about how smart solar power technology can help you maximise your solar generated power and save money in your home.
Solarpro are the Northern Beaches’ oldest and most experienced residential solar power experts and pride themselves on their seamless ability to design and install solar panels to match your home. “The truth is solar panels do not have to look ugly,” explains Managing Director, David Veal. “We design our installations with aesthetics in mind. The technology and aesthetics now are game changing.” Solarpro are a family-run business that started out installing solar hot water systems. They have since become renowned for their bespoke, fully customised systems, great customer service, and expert advice, geared to a more holistic approach. “Our primary expertise is in turning homes into Smart Homes. We use technology to give customers control over how they use their solar power. It’s more efcient and ends up giving them a better return on investment.”
Depending on your home environment, Solarpro will cater to different needs and budgets using a combination of solar power and battery storage, hot water systems, and solar pool heating (if required) and help bring your energy bills as near to zero as possible.
thermal energy in hot water tanks, and room heaters,” explains David.
SMART HOME TECHNOLOGY
And for those who want to have the greatest impact, Fully Integrated Smart Energy System has all the environmental bells and whistles.
“We did the rst installation in Australia of SOIIOS building integrated solar panels that are in the roof rather than on it,” adds David.
Having a Solar Storage Battery also makes financial and environmental sense, and Solarpro have a range to choose from including Powerwall. The ROI on a solar power and battery system is currently much higher than other investment options and it opens up opportunities to join Virtual Power Plants (VPPs).
Did you know Australia has the highest uptake of solar globally, with around 30% of homes with rooftop solar PV?
So, if you’ve been waiting for solar to ‘look’ more appealing, the wait is over. SOIIOS panels are designed for new builds or roof renovations and perfect for customers who are after a sleek look. While it can be more expensive, they can also be retrotted to a roof. Like electric vehicles, our homes are getting clever now too, and Solarpro’s primary expertise is how to turn regular homes into Smart Homes. “There are a lot of clever things that can be done including getting Solar Powered Pool Heat Pumps to run free on the sun, storing solar power as
Solarpro also have the world’s first Solar EV charging inverter. “Many people assume all EV chargers use solar but they don’t.”
Whether it’s Roof Integrated Solar Panels, Solar Powered Pool Heat Pumps, or Smart Home technology you’re after, the only real question you need to ask right now is, ‘Am I ready to invest and do my bit for the environment?’ Then call Solarpro, and they’ll help you do the rest, including No Deposit Green Loans which are increasingly popular. SALMON CEVICHE
NATURAL OYSTERS
If you were seconded by a member, only then would you be considered for membership after being vetted by the committee of the day. The membership divide was understandably tilted towards the sailing fraternity, with social members accounting for a small percentage of a group numbering in its hundreds. Keys instead of swipe cards were used to enter the premises, largely hidden behind an imposing front door. It was mystical, almost mythical, and very much exclusive. Think George Costanza’s supermodel nightclub morphing into a meatworks by day. How times have changed. Skiff club memberships will touch 10,000 this year after a concerted drive beginning a decade or so ago, coinciding with a multi-million dollar refurbishment of what were tired old premises. The majority of new members – with all due respect – would not know a spinnaker from a halyard, but they know and appreciate good food, wine and service at one of the best vantage points on Sydney Harbour. Long-serving Secretary-Manager,
Matt Hazell, makes no apologies for taking a different course. “You only have to take a walk around Manly to see the level of competition out there,” he said. “People have a lot more choice than they did 10, 15, 20 years ago and we needed to keep pace or ahead of that competition. “It would be easy to get complacent and think the view alone will attract people, but it’s not as simple as that. “You’ve got to keep evolving and reinventing yourself. We are constantly looking at ways we can improve the dining and drinking experience for members and their guests.” There’s been a heavy emphasis on improving and modernising the menu, overseen by head chef Justin Wong. Where once upon a time greasy hamburgers and deep-fried food dominated offerings, the skiffies now caters for a wide range of palates. The eclectic choices include crab and salmon cakes, seared tuna salad, kurobuta pork cutlets and pork and fennel tagliatelle. You can still grab a burger, seafood platter or pizza but with a top-end twist.
BABY OCTOPUS & PRAWNS
The wine menu, heavily stocked with Australia’s best drops, French rosés and Italian Prosecco, is equally impressive, while the expanding list of cocktails is proving extremely popular. Hazell feels the club has nailed the right mix between respecting the sailing culture the skiffies was founded on and listening and moving to meet the expectations of new members. “The sailing program is still very much front and centre of what we do,” he said. “The more successful we are from a licensed club point of view, the better off the sailors are because more funds can be dedicated to the cause. “You only have to look at the sustained success we’ve enjoyed across the various classes of sailing and the numbers we’ve got competing to see the spin-off benefits. “People might say there’s been a shift in culture, but I’d argue it’s been a positive one. “What we are doing off the water perfectly complements what we are doing on it. “This club has been around for almost 100 years, and we want to ensure it heads into the next 100 in the healthiest possible position.” •

NON ALCOHOLIC DRINKS
I’ll drink to that
Freshwater’s famous non-alcoholic drinks superstore, Sans Drinks, made it easy to have a great night out, without the hangover. Now, Founder Irene Falcone has released Australia’s first non-alcoholic Vodka substitute. There’s always something fun happening at Sans Drinks in Freshwater. Pop in on a Friday afternoon, and you’ll strike up a conversation with a fellow local stocking up for a hangover free weekend. From clever 18 year olds to health conscious mums, couples, and those over 50s, there is something for everyone to enjoy from a huge selection of non-alcoholic drinks. And now, in preparation for a rollout across Australia, Sans Drinks is getting a makeover. “There’s new branding, new signage at the store, and some brand new products,” says Sans Drinks Owner, Irene Falcone. “We’ve gone from being more of a young, fun, and quirky brand to something a little more slick and sophisticated.” While popular drops like Heaps Normal beer, Noughty bubbles, and 1920 wines continue to fly off the shelves, Sans Drinks has expanded its own exclusive range of products under the Sans Bar, and Ms Sans labels, including non-alc spritz, gin, whiskey, and tequila substitutes.
“I created Sans Bar and Ms Sans to give customers delicious, complex, non-alcoholic spirits at an affordable price,” says Irene.
62 // Eat + Drink
“I found such a massive gap in the market for alcohol-free drinks so we’ve released a whole range of alcohol-free spirits including replacements for Vodka, Whisky and more.” And even more impressive is the brand’s latest offering which is an alcohol-free vodka substitute. “I found such a massive gap in the market for alcohol-free drinks so we’ve released a whole range of alcohol-free spirits including replacements for Vodka, Whisky and more. “No one has done a non-alcoholic vodka substitute before because it’s very hard to do. Once you take the alcohol out, there’s not much left. We’ve managed to make something that’s as close as you’re going to get, and it’s a wonderful tasting formulation. I drink it on its own in a martini glass,” laughs Irene.
Always a leader in her field, Irene is a brilliant business woman, especially when it comes to delivering exactly what the market wants. “I did it because people kept asking for it,” she says. “We had to use a lot of non-alcoholic gin substitutes to emulate drinks like a Cosmopolitan or an Espresso Martini, so we created a vodka substitute for people to use.” The most colourful bottle in all of the Ms Sans range has to be the classic purple, Call Me Indigo Butterfly Pea, which is a winner for anyone who’s partial to a gin-alternative with a twist. And if you’re stuck for mocktail
inspiration on Saturday night, ht, there are over 200 recipes to choose from on the Sans Drinks rinks website, including Ms Sans n, Classic Virgin Cosmopolitan, Wilfred’s Sec Martini, and Nine Elms Sangria. For anyone who has an event coming up, or if you can’t pop into the shop, Sans Drinks has a same day door-and-dash delivery option. WHARF BAR
“The locals are loving this new chapter for the venue and we had an awesome first summer back open. It’s the Wharf Bar that everyone knows and loves, but better.” Ben May, Owner
Sophisticated Coastal Cool
Manly Wharf, one of Sydney’s most covetable dining and entertainment precincts, has been home to Manly Wharf Hotel for over 18 years, and now there are more reasons than ever to visit this popular harbourside institution. ‘Wharfy’, as it’s favourably called by locals, has long been a hub for the community, and last year, the venue underwent an extensive renovation reopening just in time for summer with an impressive new look, and the addition of an incredible new restaurant, The Tropic.
The reinvigorated venue elevates the already vibrant wharfside precinct, surf culture and beachside living. The stunning retro-inspired design by Alexander & Co makes the most of the unbeatable views and oozes sophisticated coastal cool with pops of warm colour and terrazzo finishes inside. Known to be the place to meet with friends for drinks and a weekend party destination for Northern Beaches revellers, there is now a whole new

reason to visit Wharf Bar. New Executive Chef, Francois ‘Franky’ Poulard, has come in to shake things up and bring his fresh approach to the pub menu and open the new restaurant, The Tropic, that now runs next door to the main bar. Franky, a Manly local himself, has an impressive background with stints at Chiswick, Aria and North Bondi Fish, and loves cooking the kind of food that people want to eat. Poulard has done a complete overhaul of the pub menu using quality produce and ingredients in hopes of changing people’s perceptions. “We have been getting really great feedback on the new menu and people keep coming back just for the food. We want it to be somewhere locals come to meet their family and friends for a good meal any day of the week. We are also cooking up some of the best pizzas in Manly now.”

Owner, Ben May said: “The locals are loving this new chapter for the venue and we had an awesome first summer back open. It’s the Wharf Bar that everyone knows and loves, but better. We are really proud of the evolution of the venue and the incredible dining, drinking and entertainment experiences we have created.”
The menu has something for everyone and is full of classics with a fresh twist; from fresh tiger prawns on ice, grass fed rump steak, fish and chips, burgers, schnitzel, fish tacos, to a seared yellowfin tuna nicoise salad and a kingfish poke bowl. The chefs are hand-stretching fresh pizza dough all day to make a range of flavour-packed pizzas cooked to order in the custom-built wood-fired pizza oven. Perfectly pair your meal with a cold beer or two.
The menu is made for shared feasting - think starting with oysters, freshly shucked upon ordering and washed down with a glass of Champagne. There are also hand-sized prawn cocktails cupped in crispy gem lettuce and delicious wood-fired bread with a selection of shared antipasto plates. One of the highlights of the menu is the crispy fish sandwich, already heralded as one of the best in Sydney. The cold seafood platter is a sight to behold. It’s one of the most vibrant photo-worthy dishes in Sydney. If you feel like indulging, the Eastern rock lobster, split in half and grilled with herb butter is served with a very generous pile of shoestring fries, or there’s ‘Franky’s Double Cheeseburger’ which will have you drooling.
THE TROPIC Poulard is also leading the charge at The Tropic and has designed a Mediterranean-inspired menu with a strong seafood focus made for the idyllic harbourside location. Alongside ex-Bert’s alumni Steven Lebreuilly (Venue Manager) and Gracy Ticout (Restaurant Manager), they bring their expertise and effortless service style to the laid-back surf meets city vibe of The Tropic. The impressive wharf-side outdoor terrace is unrivalled in Manly with views overlooking Jetty Bar and the glistening harbour water. The ultimate dining spot for sunny days, settle into one of the luxe banquettes for a long leisurely lunch that will probably turn into sunset cocktails.
To satisfy your sweet tooth, there’s a delicate raspberry and coconut pavlova, or if you need a post-meal pick me up, The Tropic affogato with cinnamon ice cream and a shot of Frangelico is the way to go. Pair any of these dishes with the wine list made up of talented Australian winemakers, 3 litre double magnums of AIX French rosé, or easy sipping cocktails like the spiced pineapple margarita. You’ll never want to leave.
ENTERTAINMENT Wharf Bar continues to have a jampacked entertainment line-up with live music and acoustic sets in the main bar during the week. DJs bring the party vibe every Friday and Saturday, and epic Sunday Sessions to round out the weekend. The Tropic has just launched ‘The Tropic Live’ acoustic music sessions on the terrace every Sunday from 3pm. The restaurant will be filled with the sounds of incredible local talent with live acoustic music sessions every Sunday from 3pm. Drop in for a few afternoon snacks and wines or book in for dinner and a sunset and be soothed by sounds from the likes of Uncle Jed, Zed Apton, Seani Marchetti and Vale Duo. With a buzzing atmosphere and relaxed coastal vibes, there’s no better place to sit back with a fresh cocktail and soak in the best harbour views in town. See you at the Wharf Bar. •
If you’re looking for somewhere to host your next celebration out with a group of friends, hen’s party, or special event, the restaurant’s stunning lightfilled private dining room can seat up to 30 people and opens out onto the deck outside. It’s unlike any other space on the Northern Beaches.

A River called
GOODRADIGBEE Founder, creator and fine liquor maker John O’Connor, back in the day, would go fishing with his Dad, down a track off the back of Canberra at the northern tip of the pristine Snowy Mountains wilderness of New South Wales. This is where John learnt how to fly fish on the Goodradigbee River.
GOODRADIGBEE’S AUSTRALIAN HARDWOOD CUBES
This is the story about the determination of an Australian distiller to create a spirit that is the only one of its type on the shelf. This burning desire began, funnily enough, while burning an Australian hardwood on a campfire beside the Goodradigbee River, at the northern end of the Snowy Mountains. A large Ironbark log from the mighty Ironbark tree was placed in the flames.
The guessing game began. Was that the aroma of chocolate wafting from the flames? Another campfire, another question, on a sheep station in Leonora, WA. This time a Jarrah log was thrown down. Was that the aroma of cinnamon or aniseed? This was revelatory – incredible aromas emerging from native trees.
A NEW SINGLE MALT TAKES SHAPE “We didn’t set out to be different for the sake of it. We simply wanted to make quality spirits that had unique provenance; to produce a singular Australian taste quicker and deliver it with flair. “Our accelerated maturation cubes (patent pending), built from these unique Australian hardwoods, have a much higher wood-to-liquid volume than
a barrel. So more wood equals more flavour and the colour of a 10-year-old single malt whisky in a few months,“ says John. The Australian hardwoods chosen, most of which come from alpine areas, are hard and dense because of the weather extremes. Unlike oak, which is effectively a ‘wet’ wood, Australian hardwoods react violently with the liquid, cracking and opening up, absorbing the liquid. The results – single malt spirits and wood-infused gins that are sweet, complex, delicious and revolutionary. With a small bar to open in Brookvale soon and the distillery space expanding to keep up with demand, the Northern Beaches are in for a treat as we watch this unique new distillery take a form of its own. •

Have you had your skin checked this year? When it comes to skin cancer, early detection is the number-one key to survival. And yet, so many of us only think about getting our skin checked when there’s a skin problem. Skin cancer can be prevented when detected early. Beaches COVERED. sat down with Dr Masoud Moghaddam from Northern Beaches Skin Cancer Clinic to discuss why it’s so vital to get your skin checked every year.
Dr. Masoud, is it fair to say your speciality is saving lives? This is the big message that people need to have in their minds, would you say? I am very honoured to be able to save lives with my knowledge, extensive experience and screening services. I can’t emphasise enough how this simple screening tool can benefit people and the community. Some skin cancers are devastating, resulting in major defects or a shortening of their life span. In addition, the costs incurred for the individual as well as the families and communities can be exorbitant. What do you love about what you do? I love that this very simple, gentle, noninvasive and brief screening can save people’s lives and avoid any long-term permanent negative impacts for them. I take pride in my exceptional surgical skills and the ability to achieve beautiful cosmetic results with great satisfaction from my patients. What is the key message you would like everybody to know about getting their skin checked? Prevention and screening is always effective which is why skin cancer early detection is vital. Many areas are hard to self-check and assess; therefore, you need a professional and qualified skin doctor specialist to check thoroughly and accurately. For example, a 24 year old man with olive complexion came in to see me. It was his first screening, but it was a lucky first because I ended up finding a small 2mm melanoma in situ
on his abdomen. This early detection enabled for a proper surgical excision which saved his life. The government has recently started up their campaign of SunSmart again with the “Slip, Slop, Slap” with two additional mantras, Seek and Slide. Can you brief us on what that all means? The government is very concerned about this topic because it seriously impacts lives in terms of costs, loss of human resources, etc. Their SunSmart campaign is great, but regular and consistent reminders to the community about regular checks is vital for early detection and treatment of skin cancer. If you visit the dentist and the optometrist once a year, how long between check-ups is required for your skin? The general guideline is to check your skin every 3 months for any changes. If you’re under 18, a one-off is advisable. If you’re between 18 to 45 years old and depending on your daily exposure including work-related or outdoor activities, it is recommended that you have a screening 1-2 times a year. For those over 45 or those who have a family history of melanoma, annual checks are a must. Last words of advice? Life is precious, and we need to take necessary measures to preserve that so please take regular skin checks seriously. •

SUN PROTECTION MADE EASY Just because its getting colder, doesn’t mean you can stop protecting your skin. Sun protection is important all year round. HERE ARE DR MASOUD’S TOP 6 SUN PROTECTION TIPS! • Wear 50+ Sunscreen everyday. • If you’re going out in the sun, remember your hat. • Protect your skin with sun protective clothing. • Slide on some sunglasses for those bright UV rays. • Seek shade when outdoors. • MOST IMPORTANTLY! IN THE GARDEN WITH EDEN GARDENS
All we need is a little
PLANT THERAPY
Right now’s a great time to get your garden in shape. Add some Spring flowers, or start seeding Winter vegetables? It’s the perfect time to get your garden ready for Spring. Plant perennials, bulbs, trees and shrubs now and come Spring, it will be bursting with beautiful blooms.
Adding a variety of plants to your backyard is the best way you can cater for all this biodiversity. The more creatures you attract, the better nature will balance out its ecosystem. Fill your garden with nectar-rich blooms to entice wildlife. Here are some of our favourites for Autumn.
GREVILLEAS Grevilleas are Australian natives that are easy to grow. They thrive in most

gardens, coastal or inland and they virtually don’t stop flowering.
KANGAROO PAWS Kangaroo paws are a great addition to any garden for their bold colour, vibrancy and colour varieties. And they attract birds and bees too.
FANFLOWERS Fanflowers are a native trailing plant, also known as Scaevola, that will cope in full sun or half shade. Its cascading habit makes it perfect for pots, ideal for embankments, rockeries or baskets.
BOTTLEBRUSH Nothing says Australian Summer like the delightful banksia. Birds and bees will be attracted to this shrub or a small tree adorned with big, boisterous blooms. The perfect plant for your garden!
EPACRIS Native to southeast Australia, Epacris is an attractive medium-sized open shrub that is worth growing for the showy masses of bellflowers produced from Autumn to Spring.
ASTERS These starry-shaped daisy-like perennials range in colour from white to blue to purple. Their attraction provides the pollinators with an important supply of nectar.
FLOWERING GUM Australian Flowering Gums make a beautiful addition to any garden. With broad, glossy leaves and gum nuts in Summer, these medium-sized trees create a focal point. And, they don’t just look great—they’re a perfect source of nectar for native birds, bees and butterflies.•
It’s the beginning of Autumn! It’s the best time to plant—and it starts today! • Put in bulbs now for Spring. The warm soil and moist beds help the bulbs and seeds to thrive until Spring. • Plant Winter vegetables, tropical fruits, citrus and herbs like coriander and dill. • Plant Spring flowers like sweet peas, poppies and pansies. • Lawns love nutrients! Apply oversow lawn seed to your lawns for a gorgeous growth and repair.

Ruby Vickery is a fun and adventure-loving 10 year-old who has been enjoying her lifelong favourite holiday activity, camping. A few weeks ago, Ruby and her family headed to Knorrit Flats Riverside Retreat & Camping Ground – located 40 minutes from Taree – for a great camping adventure.
ON THE ROAD Knorrit Flats – Riverside Retreat & Camping Ground is surrounded by green countryside, 337 km from Sydney. It’s a 4-hour drive with many stops along the way. Not far from the camping ground is a town called Wingham. It’s one of my favourite towns as there are many things to do there, such as going to the Wingham Museum and the famous Wingham Brush Nature Reserve. The Reserve even has it’s own boardwalk through the National Park. It’s also the traditional land of the Birrbay people.
LANDMARKS Exploring is the key to adventure, and everyone will find it in the town of Wingham. It’s only 40 km drive from Knorrit Flats.
THE EXPERIENCE If you like to kayak rivers, then the Knorrit Flats Riverside Retreat & Camping Ground is for you. It’s completely relaxing and enjoyable for kids too. You can play cricket on the long grassed areas scattered in the
grounds or have a dip in the Nowendoc River. It’s the best experience for family and groups of explorers like me. The scenery is simply breathtaking and has loads of unique flora and fauna. My tip for night time is to look up at the starry night sky. There are so many stars. Whether you’re a glamper or a camper, Knorrit Flats welcomes everyone. Look out for platypuses, kangaroos or even ringtail possums! The camping ground is accessible on a piece of unique beautiful farmland where you can exercise or relax. It’s an unforgettable experience that everyone can enjoy.

A pain in the Sciatica LET’S START WITH THE BASICS. SCIATICA IS A PAIN THAT TRAVELS ALONG YOUR SCIATIC NERVE—THE THIN PATH THAT RUNS FROM YOUR LOWER BACK TO EACH LEG. SCIATICA CAN BE A BIG PROBLEM, BUT IT DOESN’T HAVE TO STOP YOU FROM DOING WHAT YOU LOVE. GEORGIA SMITH OF HANDS ON HEALTH EXPLAINS WHAT YOU CAN DO TO TREAT THIS PAINFUL, ACUTE CONDITION. Many of us try to treat our sciatica at home with self-care techniques. The last two years of COVID lockdowns have seen most of us try to self manage conditions or learn to live with pain and restrictions. While stretches and pain killers may help relieve your sciatica, the pain will often reoccur or progress over time. It is important to assess our sciatica as more than just symptomatic pain. Look how it relates to everyday life. Can you still get off the floor easily? Can you bend to pick an object up off the floor? Are you sleeping well? Are you capable of your normal everyday tasks, like vacuuming? If you answered ‘No’ to any of these, then there is a functional disturbance that is underlying the sciatic pain you feel.
SCIATICA TREATMENT Sciatica treatment will depend on the underlying cause. Sciatica is just a symptom of an underlying condition, and there are a few different medical causes of sciatica. The cause will differentiate the treatment. The stretches given for sciatica caused by the piriformis muscle will differ from the stretches given for a disc herniation that is causing sciatica. A correct chiropractic diagnosis of the cause of your sciatica will help your practitioner to formulate a treatment plan that is unique to your needs.
Drive your career forward
DIAGNOSING THE CAUSE Your chiropractor will take a medical history and conduct a physical examination. Medical imaging may be appropriate in some cases and your chiropractor can refer you for any tests you may need. The aim of the physical exam is to find the cause of sciatica. Your chiropractor will use orthopaedic testing, neurological testing, postural and musculoskeletal testing to give you a differential diagnosis and an idea of healing time.
COMMON CAUSES OF SCIATICA • • • •
Lumbar herniated disc Spinal Degeneration Lumbar spinal stenosis Muscular entrapment
WHAT DOES TREATMENT INVOLVE? Most of our treatments for sciatica involve a diagnosis, muscle relief work, adjustments or gentle mobilisations and at-home exercises. There are also options for dry needling, cupping, stretching or spinal distraction therapy. Research shows us that most conditions causing sciatica will improve with physical therapy and/or exercise programs.

THE FUTURE OF
Fitness ALICIA PILATES
In her Newport and Freshwater studios, Alicia Grabowski has cracked the code for personalised training and her intimate pilates classes are delivering winning results for all! When Alicia Grabowski opened her boutique studio, Alicia Pilates, in Freshwater in March 2021, no one knew a Covid lockdown was just around the corner. “We opened the doors to our Freshie studio in March, and Sydney went into lockdown in June,” she says. “Twelve months later, we have over 100 clients in Freshwater and our Newport studio is stronger than ever.” Following two years of uncertainty and change, it’s safe to say people are now looking for safer ways to exercise. “There’s definitely a shift happening,” says Alicia. “I see it with many of my clients. I think we survived Covid because more people are seeking smaller classes, clean spaces, and intimate personalised service. We run classes with groups of four as a maximum.” Add easy access and great results, and you’re definitely onto a winner. And there is a wide variety of clientele coming in for the full AP experience. “Valentine’s Day was really successful - we saw lots of couples coming in to do reformer. It’s intimate and they’re challenging each other, spinning off each other, looking sexy, and getting strong together.” Alicia’s next big offer is Mother’s Day, and there are already plenty of mother-daughter duos coming in as well as men.
“I’ve been attending Alicia Pilates for approximately 6 months, and I absolutely love it. I love the personalisation of each session. The exercises are multi-layered, do-able and they allow me to focus on my strength and breathing. I have found my posture has improved and I’m feeling stronger,” MEL.

HOMEOPATHY
Women’s
HEALTH Homeopathy can be very helpful for supporting women in many stages of their lives, including during trying for a baby and pregnancy, the post natal period, menopause and for enhancing general vitality.
There are commonly used homeopathic remedies that many barefoot homeopaths have had on hand for many generations to support themselves during minor conditions. Women were, and still continue to be leading the way with homeprescribing for both themselves and their loved ones. So, it’s no wonder that there are many homeopathic remedies which can be very effective in supporting women through their challenges.
EFFECTIVE HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES Gelsemium is traditionally used for those who are feeling like they can hardly peel themselves from the couch, especially either during or after an acute illness such as the flu. It can be especially supportive where a person feels dull, sluggish and exhausted with aching muscles and difficulty keeping their eyes opened.
Aconite is well known in homeopathic circles for helping to support people with anxiety or after they have experienced a mild shock, such as bad news or a minor accident. It is commonly used during or before high stress situations, such as giving birth, job interviews, appearing in front of an audience, or just if you’re feeling panicky or anxious for no specific reason. Many people carry Aconite around in their hand bag in case they find themselves in any situation where they feel upset. Aconite is one of the most commonly prescribed homeopathic remedies, and for good reason too. Nux vomica is a homeopathic remedy commonly prescribed to those who have overindulged. Whether we are talking food, alcohol or other means of hedonism, Nux vomica has a reputation for helping to support liver function, gently easing the effects of last night’s raging party. But what many may not know is that Nux vomica can also be very supportive to those who struggle to maintain their cool and who feel intensely irritable on a regular basis.
Harbord Homeopathic Clinic is a family focused practice with a common sense grounded approach with a wealth of experience. The helpful team of practitioners integrate holistic principals with a sound knowledge of medical sciences. Located in Brookvale, the clinic has various first aid talks and information events for the whole family.

Mag phos is used most often for conditions involving cramps. This may be at the beginning of the period, or after a taxing time at the gym. It also calms the nervous system. A dose of Mag phos can be very soothing as it helps to regulate the body’s magnesium metabolism. Kali phos – while we are on the subject of tissue salts, Kali phos is known as the adrenal supporter and has often been used during gruelling times such as child birth, post partum or other marathon-like activities. It’s also suitable for women who juggle multiple roles such as mothering and work. Pulsatilla is known as the quintessential women’s remedy, and for those who respond well to Pulsatilla, they will say that it is a godsend in supporting them through all kinds of situations. From hormonal balancing to post-birth blues, Pulsatilla is used widely among many women who love having it on hand. •

EDUCATION
Building confidence for
HIGH SCHOOL Years 3 – 6 is a special and developmentally important time when students really blossom at John Colet School. Children take greater risks with their learning, build resilience, and are challenged in diverse areas. Within a supportive environment, students gain confidence in their own strengths and develop their ability to work with others, for the benefit of all.
As a small school of only two classes per year level, everybody knows each other, facilitating a family atmosphere, where students feel connected. The close-knit JCS community gives them better access to teachers and staff who really know their children on an individual level. Of special note is that children stay with the same class for several years, meaning children form deeper bonds, through consistency and routine.
“Our son’s enjoyment, confidence and his ability to adjust to high school, is a wonderful testament to the amazing learning environment at John Colet. It has put my mind to rest that his little brother and sister will also be able to make this leap with confidence.”
Senior students have leadership opportunities across all facets of the school and an understanding of how to contribute and grow in the world – important life skills to embrace the challenges of high school, and later life. John Colet School offers all students an enriched curriculum including Shakespeare festivals, sport, philosophy, classical languages, drama and specialised art and music classes like ceramics and choir. Headmaster Julian Wilcock says students at John Colet School are all challenged in a supportive and caring environment, towards their personal best. The benefit of staying with the same teacher fosters an appreciation of each child’s individual social and academic progress. Our focus is on the development of character and values, towards greater confidence and a love of learning. This can only come with excellent teachers who truly connect with the child. And perhaps one of the biggest contributing factors to the children’s readiness for high school is their
mindfulness program, the practice of The Pause – intentional pauses throughout their day to stop, reflect, give attention and make sure they are present. The result? A more grounded, more connected, and more attentive approach to their learning and life. Mr Wilcock says the best feedback the school consistently receives from graduating parents is that their children are confident, independent, aware of their strengths and areas for development, and that they’re socially and academically ready for high school. “While we were always happy with her schooling at John Colet, it is now that we can fully appreciate just how well she has been prepared for high school,” said a parent of a recent graduate. •

EAT HEALTHY THIS AUTUMN WITH YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL GROCER, THE HARBORD GROWERS MARKET. CAPSICUMS
APPLES
Capsicums are so versatile, you can do so much with them; from roasting and grilling to stir-frying and stuffing. Did you know there is no difference between a red, green, orange or yellow capsicum? They start off green, turn yellow, then orange, and finally get a red skin – it’s simply the fruit ripening at different stages.
Apples are among the most popular fruits worldwide. With a sweet, tangy flavour and crisp bite, apples have been enjoyed as a refreshing snack for centuries. But there’s more to eating an apple than just satisfying your taste buds; they’re loaded with beneficial nutrients that can boost overall health. Eating them is linked to a lower risk of several diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. These powerful little fruits have also been shown to promote weight loss, improve gut health, and boost brain function.
BOK CHOY GRAPES
Bok choy is a member of the cabbage family and has lots of Vitamin C. It’s milder in flavour than other cabbages, which allows it to be combined with any food. Bok choy’s nutritious green leaves are ideal for soups, salads and stir fries, but it can also stand on its own.
We like to think of grapes as little bites of sunshine. They’re nutritious, sweet as candy, and have been essential to the good life since the dawn of civilisation. These sweet gems are a good source of potassium, a mineral that helps balance fluids in your body. Most people don’t get enough of this nutrient, so eating grapes can help fill the gap.
PLUMS
MUSHROOMS
Sweet, plump and full of nutrients, plums are among one of the most nutrient-rich fruits you can find. Like many other fruits, they are low in calories but high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They even offer several health benefits, including improved blood sugar control and heart health.
Enjoy a unique taste experience with mushrooms. They come in lots of different shapes, sizes, and colours. Not only do they burst with flavour, but they’re also healthy and happen to be an excellent source of lean protein. Plus, mushrooms are a great way to add extra flavour without sodium or fat.
