DOGUE Issue 1 "From Hollywood to Hollywoof"

Page 1

Letter from the Editor Woof! And, welcome to our first Monthly issue! Here at Cover Dogs, we love nothing more than to celebrate our furiends, our furbabies, and our Instagram stars! And, not just for their endless loyalty, and adorable nature, but also for their pawshion and style; not just for their silliness and dorkiness, but also for their kindest of hearts, and inspiration. Our pups can teach us so much about life: like how to live in the moment, and be grateful for every little treat; how to forgive easily, and love unconditionally... This magazine is dedicated to the dogs, who make our world a better place, and the loving humans behind them. Inspired by all things Vogue & Dog, this magazine brings you the best of both worlds, with latest fashion trends and dog news. In this issue, I will cover the 5th Annual World Dog Day, organized by Vanderpump Dogs and highlights of the World’s Next Supaw Model ’21 competition. This issue will also feature some of our Instagram stars, and the pioneers of our page who have been with us since the beginning; who helped our community grow into an international, and loving dog community that it is today. Without them, this magazine wouldn’t be possible. I will also share a little about my own pup, and muse for this project, the history of the Pomeranian breed, and how the idea for Cover Dogs came about, almost 2 years ago. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed putting this together! Till next time... XOXO,

Bao's Golden Looks

from Hollywood to Hollywoof Believe it or not, there was a time when having a separate Instagram account for your dog, and speaking on behalf of your four legged friend, on social media, was considered borderline insanity. Needles to say, I was one of those people. I created an IG page for our family dog, Boss, a Dogue de Bordeaux, who weighed 185 lbs at his heaviest. Everyone laughed at me, of course, as Boss got likes on his photos. When I moved to Los Angeles, I got puppies of my own: two Shar Pei brothers, Coco and Zorro. One was white and one was black. When we ran into Charlize Theron at our vet, I was star struck, and she was smitten by Zorro. My first posted video of Coco and Zorro snoring has now reached 160,000 likes on YouTube. So, naturally when I got Mimi Bear, I created an Instagram page for her, but this time, with a lot more confidence. Indeed, these days, it’s not considered weird to have social media for your pet. In fact, it’s almost weird if you don’t have one. And if you’re not posting daily updates of your pooch, then what are you even doing with your life, anyway? Before I got Mimi Bear, I fell in love with a Pomeranian dancing on two paws, on Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. You guessed it, it was Jiff himself! Jiff’s mom was very kind. She let me hold him, and gave me his business card. This dog will be famous some day, she said with confidence. And, some eight years later, Jiff is the most famous animal in the entire world. And I, got my dream dog, a Jiff look alike, by the name of Mimi Bear. In 2019, Mimi Bear met Jiff. It was love at first sight.

5th Annual World Dog Day 2021 with Vanderpump & Mimi Bear With most of the social events being cancelled since COVID-19, it seemed only appropriate that the first social gathering we would attend, would involve dogs— many dogs; dogs of all different breeds, shapes and sizes. The Fifth Annual World Dog Day celebration, organized by Vanderpump Dog Foundation, was held on August 7th at the West Hollywood Park, in Los Angeles, CA. On a hot summer day, excited dogs, and even more excited humans behind them, gathered around the pink tents, surrounding the park, full of dog food, clothes, and accessories. Everyone took turns posing for the pawpawrazi, on the pink carpet, where insta-famous dogs posed for the gram. The outdoor event, co-sponsored by The City of West Hollywood, focused on the celebration of dogs and raising awareness about dog abuse domestically and globally.

22

2021 Over a thousand people, their dogs and 20+ pet-centered vendors were in attendance. Many celebrities attended as well, including Iggy Azalea, Lance Bass, Michael Turchin, Dr. Evan Antin, Kent Boyd, Emma Norton, Manolo Vergara, and Vanderpump Rules' Tom Schwartz, Tom Sandoval, Lala Kent, Randall Emmett, James Kennedy, and Raquel Leviss. And, some of the pawlebrities included Little Graham Cracker, Doodle named Newman, Izzy & Layla, Bronte, Little Skittle, Hank and Masha, and our Cover Girl, Mimi Bear.

The Dog Meat Festival in Yulin, China, begins on June 21 each year, where more than 10,000 dogs are captured, transported in cages, and killed for human consumption every year for this annual event. In addition, more than 10 million dogs are killed annually in China for the dog meat trade. This festival epitomizes the cruelty of the dog trade industry. Many of the dogs are stolen from their owners. Many die during transport to the slaughterhouse after days or weeks without food or water, and others suffer illness and injury during transport, such as broken bones. In 2016, the City of West Hollywood passed a resolution condemning the Dog Meat Festival in Yulin, China. Lisa Vanderpump, the founder of The Vanderpump Dog Foundation, welcomed the attendees to the event, reflecting on The Foundation's work since its inception in 2016. "The past year has been extremely difficult for everyone and keeping a Foundation alive throughout COVID-19 has had its unique challenges. However, we feel that 2020 brought a newfound love and understanding for our furry friends to many people, providing love and support through these difficult times. It is such an incredible feeling to be able to finally come together and celebrate these animals, in our first event in almost two years. Through the efforts of our Foundation, we have now rescued and re-homed over 2,300 dogs domestically." said Lisa Vanderpump.

Vanderpump Dog Foundation

Lisa Vanderpump & her Foundation Lisa Vanderpump is a British restaurateur, television personality, author and actress. She is known for her appearances on Bravo's The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Vanderpump Rules, and most recently on ABC’s Pooch Perfect. Together with her husband, Ken Todd, Vanderpump founded The Vanderpump Dog Foundation in 2016 to help create a better world for dogs, both nationally and internationally. After becoming aware of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival and witnessing the horrific images of slaughter and abuse that the dogs in Yulin face, our founders Lisa Vanderpump & Ken Todd began the long journey towards trying to stop the barbaric torture practices in Yulin and end the dog meat trade in Asia. Together with their partner Dr. John Sessa, they launched the campaign Stop Yulin Forever. The movement gained momentum and has inspired activists all over the world to end the Yulin Dog Meat Festival and encourage more humane treatment for dogs worldwide. The Rise of Cover Dogs The idea for Cover Dogs came rather suddenly. I was working on my first edits page @puppyliciousedits (putting dogs in dessert and cocktails) when one of my clients, Danielle, the Founder of PawsdeLuxe, had commissioned a total of 20 edits, as gifts for her clients. And one of them, had reached out to me with a specific request: Can you add a DOGUE heading on top of my edit to make it look like a magazine? she asked. I found some photo samples online of DOGUE art work that could be designed and framed by different graphic artists, and I was surprised that no one was designing these covers on Instagram yet. And, that was my aha moment! After completing my first Dogue edit for Harlow Bordeaux, I launched @coverdogs page and the rest is history! Cover Dogs took off faster than all of my other Instagram pages combined, and I knew that I was on to something. The idea was to put dogs on all kinds of different magazine covers, and also feature them on my page. Today, Cover Dogs has grown to 4 pages, and 4 magazines: Dogue, Barker’s Bazbark, Spawrts Illustrated and National Pawgraphic. Some of our covers are commissioned as art work, while others are designed based on our daily inspiration, for the gram. The goal is to feature the beauty of different dog breeds, and different lifestyles, from all over the world, while spreading positive vibes, because we need it now, more than ever. Visit us on Instagram to learn more!

Breed Highlight: Pomeranian 68

The Spitz Family According to the American Kennel Club, the Spitz breed comes from arctic climates, with origins in Scandinavia, Russia, North America, and Asia. The word “spitz” is a German word which means “pointed”. Physically, most spitz breeds have a wolf-like appearance that includes pointy, pricked ears, almond-shaped eyes, a heavy, double coat, and a feathery tail carried over the back. All of these features help keep them warm when the temperatures drop. According to AKC, there are between 50 and 70 distinct Spitz dog breeds, with 16 AKC recognized Spitz breeds, including (1) Akita (2) Alaskan Malamute (3) American Eskimo Dog (4) Chow Chow (5) Finnish Lapphund (6) Finnish Spitz (7) Icelandic Sheepdog (8) Keeshond (9) Norwegian Buhund (10) Norwegian Buhund (11) Norwegian Lundehund (12) Samoyed (13) Shiba Inu (14) Siberian Husky, (15) Swedish Vallhund & (16) Pomeranian. The Pomeranian is the smallest of the powerful Spitz breed. Pomeranians take their name from the province of Pomerania, in Germany, where the Pom’s ancestors were bred down from their much bigger cousins, hundreds of years ago. With their elegant appearance and regal bearing, it is no wonder that the breed has a long, royal history.

BREED OVERVIEW GROUP: Toy HEIGHT: 6 to 7 inches WEIGHT: 3 to 7 pounds COAT: Long, double coat COLOR: The most common are red, orange, cream, sable, black, brown, and blue. LIFE EXPECTANCY: 12 to 16 years

The History of the Royal Breed

Pomeranians have long been favored by royalty around the world, and especially in England. Indeed, Pomeranians were the first royal dogs to live with Queen Charlotte in Buckingham Palace in 1761. The King’s son, King George the Fourth, carried on this royal tradition, as demonstrated in paintings by Gainsborough and Stubbs. Queen Charlotte was the one who introduced Pomeranians to England, but it was her granddaughter, Queen Victoria, who made the breed popular. A great lover of dogs, Queen Victoria raised and showed at least 15 different breeds during her lifetime, focusing on Pomeranians in her later years. Story has it, that it was during her travels in Florence, Italy, that the Queen fell in love with Pomeranians and ended up bringing some back with her to Britain. Victoria then became a breeder and exhibitor of Pomeranians. The queen imported numerous Poms from different parts of Europe, and at some point, her kennel in Windsor housed more than 30 Poms. At the 1891 Crufts dog show, Victoria showed six of her breeding, and one of them, Windsor Marco, won first place in the breed. Victoria is credited for making Pomeranians famous, and for reducing the Pom’s size from about 30 pounds to their current toy stature.

But, Pomeranian royal history doesn't end there. Empress Josephine, the wife of Napoleon, is said to have owned several Pomeranians. In 1875, while still the Prince of Wales, King Edward had a Pomeranian, named Fozzy, with whom he traveled to India. In the late 1800s, the Maharajah of Kapurthala owned Pomeranians. And, Pomeranians weren’t just popular among royalty, either. These beauties have been hobnobbing with beautiful people for centuries. Michelangelo owned a Pomeranian that lounged on a silk cushion while he painted the Sistine Chapel. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart owned a female Pom named Pimperl and dedicated one of his works, an aria, to her. Chopin didn’t have a Pom of his own, but his lady friend’s Pomeranian inspired him to write his Valse des Petits Chiens, or, the Waltz of the Little Dog. Isaac Newton’s favorite companion was a Pomeranian named Diamond. Martin Luther (not to be confused with Martin Luther King) often mentioned his Pom, Belferlein, in his writings. And, other historical figures who were Pom owners include Marie Antoinette and Emile Zola. Today, Pomeranians are also very popular among Hollywood royalties. Pom owners include Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, Keanu Reeves, Gwen Stefani, Kelly Osbourne, Sylvester Stallone, Hilary Duff, Carmen Electra, David Hasselhoff, LeAnn Rimes, Fran Drescher, Nicole Richie and Lisa Vanderpump, just to name a few.

BOO: The Pioneer of So ial Media Pawlebrity

Boo was the first dog to take over the social media platform, and get famous from it. And, yes, he was also a Pomeranian! It all started in 2009, when Irene Ahn, a Facebook employee, decided to create a Facebook page for her pup, Boo— a Pomeranian from San Francisco, when Boo was four years old. His profile read: My name is Boo. I am a dog. Life is good. Boo's rise to fame happened pretty quickly when he gained millions of followers on Facebook, and eventually got the title of being the world’s cutest dog. This Pomeranian superstar was a pioneer in many ways. With his trademarked teddy bear haircut, and unprecedented style, Boo redefined what it means to be a dog in the modern world. Boo’s owner dressed him up in colorful outfits, which was pretty unique at the time. His wardrobe was so advanced and sophisticated that he wore a different outfit in every photo. Eventually, Boo took over the world with his unparalleled cuteness, and built an empire with top brand collaborations, like Virgin Airlines, book deals with Chronicle Books, and merchandising with Gund stuffed animals. Boo was also a philanthropist who donated to many different charities in his time. Sadly, Boo is no longer with us, but his legend will live on forever. We could say that Boo’s success paved the way for Jiff, a Pomeranian, who now holds the title of the most popular dog in the world.

When we work together under a common cause, we’re both saving lives and elevating our society and its laws to ensure cruelty victims and other at-risk animals receive the protection and care they deserve."
