PETERHEAD MATCH REPORT
PETERHEAD 0 - 4 COVE RANGERS
The team produced a ruthless display at Balmoor to run out emphatic 4–0 winners over Peterhead in the final match of 2025, with an early Mitch Megginson goal setting the tone for a commanding away performance.
Following the emphatic 5–2 win away at Kelty Hearts the previous week, manager Paul Hartley named an unchanged starting eleven for the second match in a row.
It was a dream start to proceedings at a chilly Balmoor, taking the lead inside just three minutes. A well-weighted pass down the line found Chris Maguire, who slid the ball into the path of the overlapping Adam Emslie. After skipping past Jason Brown, Emslie drilled a dangerous ball across the box. Newman could only palm it away, and MEGGINSONwas perfectly placed to tap into the empty net.
Peterhead looked to respond quickly and almost caught the side out on eight minutes when Shanks picked up a loose ball on the edge of the area, but with time to compose himself, he dragged his effort wide of the left-hand post.
Cove continued to threaten but were nearly punished against the run of play on 14 minutes. Duffy delivered from the left to find Jack Brown free inside the box, but Robbie Mutch produced an excellent point-blank save to preserve the lead.
06 HAMILTON ACADEMICAL MATCH REPORT
Midway through the half, Seb Ross picked out Danny Strachan in space on the edge of the area. The midfielder shaped to curl into the top corner, but his effort drifted narrowly over.
The pressure eventually told again on the half-hour mark. Some neat combination play worked the ball out to Emslie on the wing, and after beating the Peterhead skipper once more, he clipped a superb cross to the back post. O’DONNELLarrived unmarked and made no mistake, nodding beyond Newman to double the advantage.
Peterhead came out with renewed intent after the interval and forced Mutch into action early. A low cross from Danny Strachan on the right found Shanks inside the box, but the Mutch stood tall to beat the striker’s effort to safety.
Cove almost made it three moments later on the counter. Maguire released Megginson down the flank, and as the captain drove into the area, he squared for Emslie. The winger rounded Brown and looked set to finish, but Newman reacted well to block with his feet.
The match was effectively settled on 68 minutes. Mikey Doyle sent Emslie racing clear down the left, and after beating Jason Brown again, the winger was hauled to the ground inside the area. The referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty, and MEGGINSONstepped up to convert confidently from the spot.
We added a fourth in spectacular fashion with 13 minutes remaining. A Maguire corner was initially cleared, but possession was recycled back to the winger. Cutting inside onto his left foot, MAGUIRE whipped a superb strike into the far corner, leaving Newman rooted to score his first goal for the club since his arrival in late November.
It was nearly five late on. McAllister’s cross found Emslie unmarked at the back post, and after setting himself, he fired goalwards, forcing Newman into a strong save.
Overall, it was a dominant and clinical afternoon, with the team impressing at both ends of the pitch to claim a comprehensive away victory and sign off 2025 in style.
