We are pleased to present the Ryman Healthcare 2023 Season to you. Our Creative team, headed by Artistic Director Dr Alison Walls, has shaped a season of compelling storytelling, designed to reflect and include the diverse audiences of Otautahi Christchurch and Aotearoa. In other words, Theatre for Aotearoa.

The Court Theatre’s brand of theatre includes building our shows quite literally from the ground up, with custom-made sets, costumes and props skilfully crafted on site. Those of you who have taken a backstage tour will know the love and care that goes into making the best theatre in the land. If you haven’t taken such a tour with us, please put it on your to-do list.

2023 will be a special year in the history of The Court. It will be our last full year welcoming you to our beloved ‘Shed’ in Addington. The excitement is growing for our new home in the city, and we thank the Christchurch City Council for our continued partnership.

We expect to open our summer musical in 2024 in our new and beautiful bespoke theatre. So, please do make the most of our Addington venue while you still can, and sign up to The Court Reporter so you continue to hear how our new build is progressing.

We take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors and funders, particularly Ryman Healthcare and Creative New Zealand. We applaud their investment in us and in our community.

This season is the work of the entire Court Theatre whānau who bring their hearts and minds to their mahi to ensure that you can have the best theatre experience, right here at home. We are proud that we continue to engage the best creative talent in Aotearoa and the Ryman Healthcare 2023 Season at The Court Theatre exemplifies this in every way. Enjoy the season and please join us as often as you can.

As well as the best of Aotearoa playwriting, we have exciting contemporary works from Australia, the U.S. and the U.K. Melanie Tait puts a true-life feminist edge on a rural comedy, whose characters will feel familiar to many New Zealanders. We are especially proud

There are new pieces from two beloved Aotearoa theatre-makers, Penny Ashton and Rutene Spooner, that look to the past with fresh eyes: a reinvigoration of an Austen classic and a deeply personal examination of the iconic Billy T. James. Playing with a new format, Rutene’s one-man show sits in a double bill with an intimate onewoman show by Whiti Hereaka. We are thrilled, too, to invite Tasman Ray Ltd.’s searing documentary theatre piece, The Haka Party Incident, to The Court Theatre stage.

The Ryman Healthcare 2023 Season at The Court Theatre is about creating memorable, meaningful theatre, without compromise. It is defined by artistically and culturally engaged works that will offer our diverse audiences what they already love, but also surprise and challenge them with something new. Individually distinctive, these plays and musicals share a bold, heartfelt energy that will inspire our artists and creatives.

We are delighted to reschedule Pulitzer-Prize winner, Next to Normal: a ground-breaking dramatisation of a family living with bipolar disorder. We end the year with a riotous homage to musical theatre—by way of the Bard—with Something Rotten!, bringing this global hit to Australasian audiences for the first time.

For tamariki and their whānau we have Disney’s Frozen JR., postponed in 2022, along with an old school holiday favourite, and a new adaptation by Jamie McCaskill. Our Youth Company will also be packing a punch.

to introduce Court audiences to Branden Jacobs-Jenkins—one of the most compelling American playwrights of this century—and Clare Barron, whose blazingly original Dance Nation has been described simply as, “the future”.

Together, this ambitious season propels us forward and we cannot wait for artists and audiences to sink their teeth into these exciting works.
