Then came The Wind in the Willows – not a musical per se, but excellent none the less. And now, Jersey Boys, this long awaited and much heralded Court Theatre production. I hope you enjoy it as much as our team has enjoyed creating and performing it. 2020 has been a full on year for The Court Theatre and our big news, of course, is that we are working on building our new theatre in the city, on the corner of Gloucester and Colombo Streets, in the Performing Arts Precinct. The Christchurch City Council, architects, project managers, quantity surveyors, engineers and many others have been hard at work for a number of months now, and we will shortly have images of the new building to show you, as well as floor plans and concepts for the look and feel of our magnificent new home. We expect to open in three years’ time. If you are reading this message in November or December, then it’s time to relax after a challenging and full-on year. If you are reading this in January, then I hope you are filled with hope and optimism for a better year than the one we have just had. Kia ora Ōtautahi, Wow, we are finally here. It is our pleasure to welcome you back into the theatre this summer. My predecessor Ross Gumbley applied for the rights to this show for years, and we were all so delighted when we finally got the nod that they were available to perform for Canterbury. So, thank you Ross, for scheduling this award-winning piece. In 2006, Jersey Boys won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. In 2007, it won the Grammy Award for best Musical Show Album and, in 2009, it won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. So, it is now well crafted and ready for us. It has been incredible to watch and hear the development of this show in rehearsals. Stephen Robertson, our director, has been brainstorming and working on this since last year. Richard Marrett, our Musical Director, has been liaising with rights holders and arranging music for months. These two men are consummate professionals and on behalf of the theatre, gentlemen, I say thank you. We are lucky to have your care, craft and attention to detail. We have assembled an amazing cast and crew for this summer musical. We are so lucky to have such a breadth of talent here in Christchurch that of the 31 artists we have hired to work alongside our permanent staff, 24 of them are from Canterbury. It is a pleasure to have new artists joining us from Australian tours and the West End, including Kristian Lavercombe, our leading man, who is re-joining us after 14 years working overseas since performing with us last! We feel this show is beautiful, moving and packed full of songs so many of us know and love. I am 33, and I grew up with my mum listening to Classic Hits so I know most of these songs forwards and backwards. There is something for everyone in this show. Stephen is a freelance director, spending much of the year touring New Zealand directing, staging and designing musical theatre productions, corporate events and cabaret. He has amassed an impressive resume of directing credits throughout the years as director/choreographer and costume designer. Creating theatre during Covid-19
Here at The Court, lockdown saw us running online education classes, creating social media content (such as isolation improv and open auditions), as well as planning for our future. We created a new 2021 Season, amid hundreds of calls to patrons whose tickets were affected by the changes in programming.
At the best of times, theatre is a risky business. Months - even years - of preparation go into shows that attendances can make or break. Many theatre companies in Aotearoa (including The Court Theatre) operate as non-profit organisations, running on the support of generous patrons, supporters, sponsors and other funders.
When Level 2 hit, we ran a series of winter-warmer productions in our foyer for audiences of 100 patrons or less, before ramping up to our seasons of Rants in the Dark and Jersey Boys.
Across all industries, Covid-19 has enforced a level of uncertainty that pervades everyday life. But when you need to invest months of time, money and resources into a live event that may or may not be able to go ahead, the stakes are increased.
Our friends at the Isaac Theatre Royal, who normally host a full schedule of international artists and touring productions, have adjusted their programme to focus on local artists, hosting more Kiwi musicians and creatives, alongside film screenings and even Canterbury school performances.
Here in Aotearoa, we feel incredibly fortunate to be back onstage, presenting live theatre again with this season of Jersey Boys - all the while aware that our whānau around the world aren’t quite so lucky.
They’re not alone in adjusting the way that they operate.
Broadway is closed until at least May 2021, with London theatres shutting their doors again, following a second lockdown announcement in November. Across the UK, more than 5,000 jobs within the theatre industry have been lost, with 70% of theatres facing permanent closure.
“Covid has changed what we programme, broadening our horizons beyond professional productions,” says Q Theatre’s Ticketing Manager, Matthew de Kimble Butler.
As fortunate as we’ve been, the theatrical landscape has certainly changed here in Aotearoa, with our national companies changing the way they operate in order to survive our new normal.
A silver lining for many theatres during lockdown was contacting patrons regarding their cancelled tickets.

each other in a way that still upholds our uara (values) of manaakitanga and kotahitanga. In all its madness, Covid has really pushed us to think outside of the box.”
“We had the pleasure of connecting and commiserating with our audience who weren’t only concerned for Q Theatre’s future, but for our staff as individuals,” explains Butler. “We weren’t simply customer service staff, we were people struggling with the same isolation and insecurities as our customers. It was healing in a time of great pain and sadness, for us and for them.”
Bucking the trend, local theatre Little Andromeda opened its new venue in October, while many others around the world face closure. As Director Michael Bell explains, it certainly hasn’t been easy.
In Wellington, Māori theatre company Taki Rua were left similarly scrambling when lockdown forced them to halt their flagslip te reo Māori Season that traditionally tours schools throughout Aotearoa.
“I’m so proud of our work – we reopened our former venue on Friday 22 May with just one week’s notice that we received funding, providing a theatre experience where our patrons barely even noticed when we switched back and forth between alert levels 1 and 2. Since then, we’ve put on 73 shows, with artist applications now open for our February – April 2021 season.”
“As you can imagine it was disheartening when we had to cancel the first leg of our 2020 tour, with no guarantee of being able to complete it,” says Kaiwhakatairanga (Marketing and Communications Coordinator) Taylor Terekia. “The safety of our schools and tamariki was always at the forefront of our minds, so we had to think creatively about sharing our show when live production was out of the question.”
Here at The Court, our cast, crew and staff are so thankful to be back on the boards, celebrating not just our return to the theatre, but the entire country’s ability to do so. “It’s been a difficult year, but we’re so excited to bring audiences this joyful musical – with a plan B in place, if need be,” says Chief Executive Barbara George. “We can’t thank our community enough for their support.”
In the end, the team came together and filmed a performance of the show in Te Haukāinga, enabling them to share a digital version of the performance with the schools that missed out.
Speaking to the positives that Covid has brought, Butler says, “I’ve seen and experienced so much genuine care and support between organisations who are so often in competition with each other. This year has truly proven we are so much stronger together.”
While technology has revolutionised theatre in so many ways – just look at the LED screens featured in Jersey Boys – Covid-19 has created a boom in digital theatre. Wellington’s Circa Theatre commissioned a virtual show from Trick of the Light Theatre during lockdown, while Auckland Theatre Company turned their scheduled live production of The Seagull into a digital adaptation, created through Zoom.
What a joy it is to be part of this theatrical whānau and that we and our sister companies can open our doors again in Aotearoa.
Speaking to the changes she’s seen in the industry, Terekia says, “Covid has taught us how to be flexible and innovative, staying connected with

In a normal year, The Court Theatre would stage around twenty productions from its home in Addington; costumes crafted, sets constructed and rehearsals perfected in its Shed.

There’s nothing quite like coming together for a spectacular summer musical, though. “We’re extremely lucky to be able to bring this production to Christchurch audiences and give our talent employment during such uncertain times,” explains Director, Choreographer and Costume Designer Stephen Robertson.
...This year has looked a little different. Jersey Boys marks The Court’s first large-scale production since February’s season of A Streetcar Named Desire and Lysander’s Aunty, which was just days away from its opening night when lockdown was announced. 2020 has been tumultuous for all industries, especially live theatre, an art form which depends upon live audiences and in-person connection.
The cast you’ll see on-stage – and hidden figures behind the scenes – all had numerous gigs cancelled this year, including our Frankie Valli. Kristian Lavercombe was playing Riff Raff in an international tour of The Rocky Horror Show when Covid-19 hit. For everyone involved, it was so special to start rehearsals again in October - but to stage a musical this large, things began much earlier...

Behind the scenes, three backstage crew members will be helping make these transformations happen every night, with 54 wigs waiting to be worn backstage!
The license for Jersey Boys was organised back in 2019, followed by the contracting of directors and key creatives. Following Stephen Robertson’s design work, the costume build for the show began in the first week of September, with a team of seven technicians working under Costume Manager Deborah Moor to put together an astonishing 247 costumes.
Moor and her team have scouted the bulk of Jersey Boys’ costumes from within The Court’s collection, with key costumes made from scratch. “One of the things I love most about this show is being able to use really beautiful original dresses we’ve had in our collection for many years. They’re so stylish and cut in a way you just don’t see anymore. We always have costumes that push our own skills as a team – and Jersey Boys has been no exception.”
“The costume changes for this show are the most we have ever had!” Moor says. “Jane Leonard has 17 costume changes (plus wigs) and Nomi Cohen holds the record with 19 costume changes (plus wigs). Our previous record was 11 in Mary Poppins!”
When it comes to creating a vintage atmosphere, Properties Manager Julian Southgate has been busy, sourcing and creating a collection of ‘50s and ‘60s memorabilia and musical instruments – including hand-building the 1950s payphone you’ll spot in the show!

class setting, but utilising LED screens we can take people from seedy night clubs, to pizza restaurants and even stadium concerts,” he explains. For The Court’s workshop team (who build everything on-site), this musical has been a much more extensive set build than a regular production. The show contains an incredible 50 scenes (a typical musical has around 20), challenging our team’s creativity, with locations needing to switch in less than 5 seconds!
For Richard Marrett, there couldn’t be anything better than being back on-stage. He’s been working day and night in his role as Musical Director, preparing both actors and the band in perfecting The Four Seasons’ back catalogue. “It feels so energizing to be working in this environment again. No one is taking this opportunity for granted.”
Behind the scenes, almost 100 people have been involved in bringing this show to life, from front of house staff to backstage technicians. There’s no denying that every minute has been a labour of love.
Tying everything together is the handbuilt stage, with Set Designer Harold Moot challenged to transport audiences across various American locations.

Michael is a professional bassist whose career has seen him performing and recording around New Zealand and Australia with touring artists, bands, theatre shows and orchestras. His previous Court Theatre credits include Blood Brothers; Grease; Mary Poppins; Songs for Nobodies and Jesus Christ Superstar. His other theatre credits include regular orchestra roles with Showbiz Christchurch. Michael performs with the CSO as a section bassist and is ever–present in the annual Christchurch Jazz Festival. He teaches at Ara Music Arts as the bass tutor on both the Jazz and Contemporary courses. Michael is also the founder of Global Music Teachers, an online marketing machine supporting and promoting thousands of music teachers through New Zealand, Australia and the USA since 2011.
Mike is a graduate of the Ara Institute of Canterbury (Bachelor of Musical Arts). His previous Court Theatre credits include Grease; Blood Brothers and Jesus Christ Superstar. His other theatre credits include Mamma Mia!; Hairspray; Evita; Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert and We Will Rock You (Showbiz Christchurch). Mike has toured nationally and internationally with artists including Elaine Paige and Aled Jones, and is an active musician in the Christchurch scene, performing with his original guitar trio Toro! alongside many other projects. He is the jazz guitar tutor for the jazz programme at Ara and also writes and produces music from his studio at The Piano in Christchurch.

Heather is a guitarist, composer and music teacher who works and performs regularly in many different capacities around New Zealand. She is a jazz guitar graduate of Ara Music Arts (BMus) and the University of Canterbury (BMusHons). Her previous Court Theatre credits include Jesus Christ Superstar. Her other theatre credits include Footloose; 42nd Street (NASDA); Alice (Free Theatre Christchurch); Mamma Mia! (Variety Theatre Ashburton); Catch Me If You Can the Musical (Blackboard Theatre Collective); Wicked and We Will Rock You (Showbiz). Heather is highly active as a jazz musician. As a bandleader, sideman and recording artist, Heather has played regularly around New Zealand in several music venues and festivals. Recently, she was the lead guitarist for Julia Deans’ Like Water at the Christchurch Art’s Festival and The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (Showbiz Christchurch).

Mitchell is a graduate of Ara Music Arts (Bachelor of Music Arts, Jazz Performance - Drum Set). His previous Court Theatre credits include End of the Rainbow and Blood Brothers. Mitchell is a freelance drummer, percussionist and teacher based in Christchurch. He is a confident and versatile performer with an abundance of experience playing in different styles of music including Jazz/Blues, Pop/Rock and Musical Theatre. He is an in–demand musician who is currently a member of many local ensembles. He has gained a wealth of experience performing different styles of music in music festivals, iconic venues and events, as well as performing around New Zealand.
Jersey Boys is Caelan’s debut performance at The Court Theatre. His other theatre credits include On the Town (National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art); Beauty and the Beast; Peter Pan Jr. (CentreStage Rolleston); Bad Girls (Riccarton Players) and The Witches of Eastwick (Kirwee Players). Caelan became an Associate of Trinity College, London (ATCL) in 2015, and now works as an accompanist, musical director, conductor and piano teacher. He is currently working with The Vocal Collective as their accompanist, as one of two musical directors working with the Selwyn Community Choir and regularly as an accompanist for students at the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art.

In over 30 years working in professional theatre, Harold has designed numerous Court Theatre sets including Grease; SNAP!; You Can Always Hand Them Back; Ladykillers; Macbeth; Educating Rita; Legally Blonde the Musical; Ropable; Chicago; Puff the Magic Dragon; Easy Money; Stephen King’s Misery; Jesus Christ Superstar and The Pink Hammer. Harold has designed sets for Showbiz Christchurch including Hot Shoe Shuffle; The Full Monty; Fiddler on the Roof; Grease; Jesus Christ Superstar; Spamalot and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. He has also designed sets for The Edge, Wellington Musical Theatre, Downstage Theatre and Circa Theatre. Harold designed the set for the New Zealand premiére of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast for Showbiz Entertainment as well as Miss Saigon and Hairspray for the New Zealand Musical Theatre Consortium. Harold has worked in film, television and advertising including working at Weta.
After growing up in the river city of Whanganui, Tane left to study at the Music Audio Institute of New Zealand in Christchurch. He has been lucky enough to help bands and performers of all kinds deliver their art since. His previous Court Theatre credits include Hedwig and the Angry Inch and The Wind in the Willows. His other production credits include working for What Now!; The Erin Simpson Show; The Eastern; Ali Harper Productions; The Imperial Russian Ballet and various music festivals, tours and productions, both nationally and internationally. Tane is thankful for the support, friendship and kindness he has had from the Christchurch Arts community throughout his career and strives to represent this community wherever he goes. “Mahia te mahi, hei painga mō te iwi. Grant began his career in theatre at The Court in 1988, spending four years as a lighting/sound designer and some time as a stage manager. He has designed and production managed an extensive amount of large scale corporate and theatre events all over the country. His theatre credits include an array of shows for many of the local musical theatre societies around New Zealand, including Showbiz Christchurch, The Court Theatre and the NZMT Consortiums of several shows. Dave is highly sought after for his creative, innovative high end video and production design and technical solutions. He currently runs his own Christchurch based company, Pixel, which designs and supplies an impressive variety of large video displays and visual effects for events and stage productions across New Zealand.
With over 30 years’ experience in both hairdressing and as a performer, Sarah is an expert in all aspects of theatre both on and off stage. With a Makeup Diploma also up her sleeve, Sarah tours as wardrobe manager for many consortium shows such as We Will Rock You; Mary Poppins and more. She has worked with the New Zealand Opera, many international touring shows and with Showbiz Christchurch she is Head of Department, Wigs and Makeup, including for Phantom of the Opera; Hairspray; Priscilla, Queen of the Desert; Wicked and more. Sarah has been a regular wig stylist with The Court Theatre since 2013’s Grease, including the New Zealand premiere of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. In a career highlight, Sarah worked for Elaine Paige on her 2013 tour of Australasia as her PA and dresser, and continues to work with her.
