Welcome to Flagons and Foxtrots, a show designed to take you back in time to the 60s, when life was great, relationships simple and everyone drove a Morris Minor… or perhaps those times were not all that they seemed!

CAMERON (Dean - Bobbin Robbin)

We will let you be the judge as you enjoy this wonderful Aotearoa production by exceptional playwrights Alison Quigan and Ross Gumbley. Ross has a day job as well and that is as Theatre Adviser for our new home in the city, working alongside our talented Project Manager, Tom Clisby. There are many of us involved in what will be a triumph of modern theatre design that reflects and caters for our diverse community. So, to the whole team… good luck – and hurry up, we can’t wait!!!

Nau mai haere mai

There are always teams of people involved in everything we do and it is my pleasure to thank long-time sponsor Harmans Lawyers – a Christchurch law firm who have been providing advice for some 130 years. Harmans have partnered with us to bring you this production and we extend a very warm welcome to them and their guests. As Alison says in her introduction over the page, we are pleased to again welcome an exceptional cast and crew, led by Director Kathleen Burns, to bring the compelling story of Flagons and Foxtrots to life. So grab a shandy (for those of you who have no idea what I am talking about, ask your parents), sit back and quite simply… enjoy. Ka kite anō Barbara George Chief Executive / Tumu Whakarae

Kathleen is a performer known for her comic timing and she brings that skill to the direction of Flagons and Foxtrots. Nostalgia and sentiment are perfectly balanced by wit and physical comedy. Her cast, a true ensemble, likewise bring both emotional connection and a sense of fun to their roles.

There is a multi-layered nostalgia in bringing this heartfelt comedy to our stage. The play itself, written by Alison Quigan and the Court’s own Artistic Adviser Ross Gumbley, transports audiences back to the dance halls of 1960s Aotearoa. It is also part of The Court’s history; it premiered at The Court back in 2006 and was an immediate hit. Director Kathleen Burns has a past tie to the play too, having delighted audiences as Rita in Dunedin’s Fortune Theatre’s 2015 production.

Flagons and Foxtrots is a tribute to the Saturday night dances that were once held in every hall throughout Aotearoa. It is also a tribute to friendship, love and determination. The world can feel pretty grim at times, and so we invite you to let go, laugh and brush off your dance moves.

Flagons and Foxtrots celebrates humour and spirit and these qualities also define the creative team bringing it to life on the stage. Rehearsals began in January, only to be placed on hold mid-way through when the country moved to Covid-related red-light settings. Undeterred, the cast and crew returned after the hiatus as if they had never left, putting their hearts into every rehearsal.

The design team have captured rural New Zealand life, circa 1960-something, to the last detail. Choreographer Hillary Moulder and Musical Director Caelan Thomas have us tapping our toes back to another era.

What a joy to open Flagons and Foxtrots at The Court Theatre.

Kathleen is the ideal person to helm this production. She has a deep understanding and love of the play for the remembered world it brings to life and the human truths it captures. She also understands how damn funny it is.

Ross and Alison have co-written six plays, four of which have been produced at The Court, including the critically acclaimed Flagons and Foxtrots.

Ross began as a trainee actor at The Court Theatre in 1985. He has now appeared in over 100 productions and is currently The Court Theatre’s Artistic Adviser. He is also a highly accomplished improviser and was a founding member of The Court Jesters. In the late nineties he was Associate Artistic Director at Centrepoint Theatre under the Artistic Directorship of Alison Quigan and anchored his own radio show, Gumbley’s Better Breakfast, for Classic Hits.

THE AUTHORS

Ross’ first solo venture as a playwright, Happy Coupling, premiered at The Court in 2006, the same year that he became the theatre’s Artistic Director. In 2016 he co-wrote the play Ropable with Allison Horsley, which he also directed for its 2017 debut. Alison Quigan’s performing arts career spans over thirty-eight years. In that time she has acted in and directed over one hundred productions and has written twelve original plays. In the early years she worked mostly with Theatre Corporate in Auckland, Centrepoint Theatre in Palmerston North and The Court Theatre in Christchurch. In November 1986 she was appointed Artistic Director of Centrepoint Theatre, a position she held for eighteen years. Between 1997 and 2000 Alison wrote a succession of critically acclaimed plays with Ross Gumbley. In 2001 and 2002, she continued these successes with Lucy Schmidt as her writing partner. In 2003 Alison started writing on her own with Mum’s Choir being a major success in Palmerston North, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Her later play Ladies For Hire was also a huge success at Centrepoint Theatre and in numerous other productions that have followed. In 2001 Alison was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for Services to Theatre. Alison is also known for her television work, especially Shortland Street in which she played Yvonne Jeffries from 2004 to 2010. She is based in Auckland and works as an actor, writer, director and theatre manager.

When I was asked to direct Flagons and Foxtrots, I was immediately filled with nostalgia. I have the fondest memories of acting in this play at The Fortune Theatre in Dunedin in 2015, so what a joy to get to bring it back to life in a new way – a larger cast, more live music, and the now oh-so-necessary understudies. I have loved the chance to revisit the past and breathe new life into it, always keeping in mind my own personal philosophy – that going to the theatre should be a good time. It’s my hope that you will have your own nostalgic connection to this work. Whether that’s a warm feeling from seeing a 1957 Morris Minor, listening to the song that was playing when you had your first kiss, or the memory of finding new romance at the weekly dance, these are the things that connect us to our past and to each other. My thanks go to this stellar cast who have worked so hard to reinvigorate and reimagine this classic piece of New Zealand theatre. To the understudies, for their usually invisible but vital work. To the Production team for being endlessly adaptive to the many changes we have endured over this last year. To the writers, Alison and Ross, for gifting us this piece of New Zealand work and the opportunity to tell our own stories. And my thanks to you, dear audience. Theatre does not exist unless you watch it. You are the final magical ingredient we have been waiting for. So, get up there and dance!

The flexibility to change some of the song choices in the show was also a challenge. Caelan says that “the flexibility of choice can be paralysing – there are so many options for this show, it was often hard to narrow it down to a single decision!” When Rita sings You Don’t Own Me, it marks a turning point for her character. Actor Lily Bourne describes it as “a sharp wake-up call for her in this pivotal moment. The lyrics stop her and bring out a whole other range of feelings she hasn’t let herself feel yet. This song means so much more to Rita than it ever has before and it’s deeply special for me to go on that journey with her as an actor.” The song gives a glimpse into Rita’s inner thoughts and powers her actions through the end of the play.

The music in Flagons and Foxtrots has a massive contribution to the nostalgic feeling of the show, along with supporting the story and sharing the characters’ emotions. Expect to be toe tapping along to Be My Baby and Twist and Shout, part of a great soundtrack and story that will leave you smiling as you return to ‘real’ life.

Musical Director Caelan Thomas shared how “Flagons and Foxtrots doesn’t have any set musical arrangements” which allowed “an incredible amount of freedom” to “write arrangements and choose songs to match the narrative beats and suit the vocal ranges and instrumental strengths of the cast”. This is an unusual situation but allowed the musical choices to be made especially for this cast –an exciting opportunity!

Music plays a key role in Flagons and Foxtrots. While it’s not a musical, the play brings to life the dance hall scene as familiar tunes transport you back to the 1960s.

TWIST AND SHOUT!

LILY (Rita) AND WILLIAM (Pinkie)

Set in a time before Spotify and Bluetooth speakers, having live musicians on stage was the norm at dances and parties. The cast of Flagons and Foxtrots share their many talents in this play, with most of them playing instruments or singing in this show. For many of the actors this meant learning to play or refreshing themselves on guitar, bass or drums. Some hadn’t played since high school, and Swing Cameron Douglas had only previously learnt drums for The Court’s 2006 production of Flagons and Foxtrots!

GreatDevelopingTalent

Many of the people onstage in Flagons and Foxtrots represent the opportunities provided here to support New Zealand creative talent thrive. Our cast includes alumni of both the Court Youth Company and Jester Youth, as well as actors who have made their way from studies at National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art (NASDA) or Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School to their professional debuts on our stage.

A big focus for The Court is developing new talent. We are home to an incredible wealth of skill and learning and are proud to help pass this on to new generations of performers and creators. Both the Court Youth Company and Jester Youth provide opportunities for young performers aged 17 - 21-years-old to develop their skills and potential through practical experience. They receive training from experienced actors, directors and Jesters over the year which culminates in live shows celebrating their work and new skills. We also offer training opportunities for young people interested in aspects of technical theatre, design and stage management.

The Court Theatre has an important place in developing creative talent in the community – talent that serves not only our own artistic programme, but feeds artists into the bigger ecosystem of Christchurch and the New Zealand performing arts.

Flagons and Foxtrots Director Kathleen Burns has spent half her life at The Court Theatre. Kathleen started as a Jester at just 17, a role she continues to this day. She has progressed her onstage career in a large number of comedic and dramatic acting roles and first took the directorial helm on a children’s show, The Littlest Ninja, in 2018. Kathleen now makes her mainstage directorial debut here at The Court.

Lily Bourne left Palmerston North to undertake a degree in performing arts at the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art (NASDA) in Christchurch. She is now mid-way through her third and final year and is already making her debut onstage as Rita in Flagons and Foxtrots. For Lily, it is exciting to be in a professional show while still studying, and she is excited to keep learning from people at the theatre.

In 2021 other performing arts students from NASDA were also initiated into the world of professional theatre as the ensemble and supporting roles for our mainstage production, Frankenstein. The Court is committed to teaching others our craft and supporting the growth of creative talent to strengthen performing arts throughout New Zealand. Tonight, you can witness this talent live onstage.

The Friends of The Court Theatre are part of The Court’s fabric. For years we have supported The Court’s incredible work, ensuring that our local community continues to see exciting and enthralling onstage performances, supported by talented craftspeople. There are more than 2,000 Friends of The Court Theatre, all passionate advocates of live theatre. Through membership fees, fundraisers and other donations we give The Court tens of thousands of dollars of funding each year. This helps to support the development of the amazing shows we enjoy at The Court. Our volunteer ushers show patrons to their seats, saving the theatre more than $200,000 each year in ushering fees. We operate The Court’s coffee bar so patrons can enjoy hot drinks, snacks and, when conditions allow, we ensure that all present at the opening night of mainstage shows can celebrate with complimentary bubbles and food. As a Friend you also have access to special offers and events not available to the general public –a chance to grow your own network of friends. In joining The Friends you are joining a group of passionate people who offer their diverse skills and experience to support our city’s creative heart. a member for as little as: double $55.00 Adult single $40.00 double $45.00 single $30.00 Youth $30.00
