This year, we celebrate an incredible milestone: 175 years of the YMCA movement and 57 years of serving the Greater St. Cloud community. For me personally, it also marks 36 years of being part of the Y movement. Over that time, I have come to appreciate that the YMCA is at its very best when it reflects the people it serves.
Our commitment to our members and our community is simple and steady: to serve, to care, and to love. Every day, our team works to strengthen the community through healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility. Whether it is a child learning to swim, a family finding connection, or a senior improving their well-being, the Y is here for all.
None of this happens without you. Volunteers, donors, members, committed staff, and partners are the heart of the YMCA. You’ll read about several volunteers in the following pages. I see many more every day—Helen teaching children water safety and swim skills, Jerry heading to the roof to change filters, and Clare recruiting others to support our Y Partners scholarship campaign. These moments are what make our Y strong.
As we look ahead, we remain committed to growing alongside our community, listening carefully to its changing needs, and staying grounded in our mission of putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. While needs may change, our vision to serve 30% of our community remains the same. We are here to build a healthier, more connected community for generations to come.

FRIENDSHIPS CONTRIBUTE TO STRONG PHYSICAL AND
FAMILY TIME MEANS YMCA TIME
When Zack and Kara McCloud relocated to St. Cloud from Ohio in 2023, joining the Y was a no-brainer. They had been members in Perrysburg and knew the benefits for their growing family, which now includes daughters Ripley, 4, and Bex, 18 months.
Both Army veterans, they met while stationed in Korea. Zack served as a combat engineer and Kara as a medic. After settling in St. Cloud, joining the Y really helped them prioritize their health. “2025 was our year, we got our whole lives on track,” says Kara. For her it meant shedding nearly 100 pounds, while Zack trimmed 60 pounds from his frame.
Most mornings, the family starts their day at the Y. First stop is a visit with the older adults in the lobby, next is dropping off the girls at Kid Zone, and then individual workouts for themselves. For Zack that includes strength training, cardio, and his favorite – the sauna. Kara lifts weights, enjoys a good cardio workout, and does some laps around the track. The girls have also gotten involved, trying the Sports Sampler program and joining their parents at the 5K events.
“We’ve found that the Y is a really good place for us and our girls to meet people,” Zack adds. “We scream from the rooftops, ‘if you have kids, get a Y membership!’”
EARLY RISERS BOND OVER EXERCISE AND EVENTS
For some, 5 a.m. is a time for snoozing until the alarm goes off. Not so for early birds John and Theresa Wenzel and a group of Y members dedicated to their group exercise classes. Recent retirees, John and Theresa enjoy the variety of the classes and the bonds that have been formed with other participants, ranging in age from 25 to 65. From HIIT (high intensity interval training) and TRX (total resistance training) to yoga, step, and spin classes, the group thrives on trying something new.
At the conclusion of each of their classes, they head to the stairs and run up and down three times as a group before settling in for a cup of coffee in the intergenerational area. After tracking their progress for 2.5 years, they have climbed enough steps to be at the top of Mount Everest and are currently working on their second peak, K2, the second highest mountain in the world.
The group’s fun doesn’t stop with the classes, stairs, and coffee. They enjoy attending the Y’s Promenade fundraiser and other social events together.
“The community building here is just amazing,” Theresa says. “There is such a strong connection when you get to

MS PATIENT FINDS STRENGTH AND CAMARADERIE AT THE Y
Sue Poser, former owner of Gruber’s Quilt Shop, has been living with multiple sclerosis for decades. A thirdgeneration business owner, she successfully ran the shop for 42 years. After retiring and stepping away from the business, Sue joined the Y for the opportunity to focus on her health and exercise in the pool.
That focus led her to a group exercise swim class designed for people living with chronic health conditions. The first time she was lowered into the large pool, she felt scared and tentative, walking along the edge holding onto the wall. Then the instructor, Karen, gave her a push of encouragement and said, “Sue, just walk!” Sue did and hasn’t needed assistance since. “Jesus walked on water. I walk in the water,” she says with a chuckle.
Sue and her husband head south to Branson, MO for the winter months, but when she’s in town, she’s at the Y five days a week, splitting time between the pool and strength training. “My balance is better now,” she says. “An added bonus is meeting a whole new group of people at coffee time after the workouts.”
TEENS SHARE LOVE OF BASKETBALL
For most teenage boys, sitting idle and chatting isn’t the norm — and that’s certainly true for twins Ikenna and Micah Nwachukwu, seniors at Apollo High School, and Sal Camara, a senior at Cathedral High School.
Longtime Y members, the three first met in seventh grade playing AAU summer basketball. When Sal transferred to Cathedral the following year, Ikenna and Micah helped him navigate his new school, strengthening a friendship rooted in the game.
Today, basketball still brings them together. When they’re not playing with their school teams or working afterschool jobs, they can usually be found at the Y shooting hoops or lifting weights. Micah enjoys playing five-on-five and “building connections and making friends at the Y.”
Sal agrees, noting the wide range of ages on the court. “I like talking to new people, from ages 15 up to 45 or 50,” he says. For Ikenna, the focus is fitness. “I enjoy the exercise and working on strength training,” he adds.
The teens say adult players take a genuine interest in their high school teams and even attend games to cheer them on. “We appreciate seeing them in the stands,” they say — proof that at the Y, basketball builds community as well as skills.
VOLUNTEERS INTEGRAL TO Y COMMUNITY
The Y community is strengthened by nearly 200 community members who generously volunteer each year. From front desk greeters and youth sports coaches to special event and Kid Zone helpers, they bring energy, care, and connection —making the Y a more vibrant place for everyone.

Strong ties to the business community have long been a hallmark of the Y. Kelly answered the call when asked if her marketing firm could donate its talents to the Y’s largest annual fundraiser, the Promenade. For the past five years, Kelly and her team have brought each event to life by creating a unifying theme across all materials and branding, while Kelly has donated hundreds of hours leading décor efforts.

Martice has loved basketball since he was a middle schooler in Minneapolis. He played at Roosevelt High School and intramurals in college. He decided it was time to step up and help teach his youngest son, a 4th grader, the fundamentals of this sport.

OUTDOOR WATERPARK PROJECT UPDATE
The St. Cloud Area Family YMCA is leading an exciting effort to build an outdoor water park in St. Cloud that goes far beyond slides and splash pads. This project is about investing in a place that brings people together and reflects the heart of our community.
Momentum is already strong. Private donors and YMCA members have contributed more than $11 million, demonstrating clear belief in the project and impactful public and private collaboration. While this support is significant, additional funding is still needed before construction can begin.
PROPOSED SALES TAX
To help close the remaining funding gap, the Y is partnering with the City of St. Cloud on a proposed quarter-cent sales tax. If approved by voters, the tax would generate approximately $7 million over a three-year period, providing critical support to bring the project to life.
A decision is expected in summer 2026 on whether the proposal will move forward to a public vote in November.
This potential public investment reflects the City of St. Cloud’s recognition that this project would strengthen the local economy and enhance the region’s reputation as a destination for families. Today, Central Minnesota families often travel more than 50 miles to experience an outdoor water park, and Visit Greater St. Cloud consistently hears the same question from prospective visitors: “Do you have one?”
If approved, the sales tax would not only help make the water park possible, but also ensure it delivers long-term value for the entire community.
ENJOYMENT FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES
“The water park will be a place where families gather, and kids can soak up the best parts of summer, enjoying water in a safe place outdoors,” says YMCA CEO/Executive Director Greg Gack. “The addition of the waterpark makes our region more attractive to visitors and will help drive additional spending at local businesses.”
At full capacity, the water park will welcome tens of thousands of guests each season, serving both YMCA members and the broader community. It will strengthen quality of life, stimulate local economic activity, and help position St. Cloud as a go-to destination for family recreation.
