Back to school looks a little different this year
Janae Wandler
One of the new regulations that need to be followed by staff and students is the wearing of masks. We can see Mrs. Cardinal’s grade three class is setting the standard with many bright and colourful masks. The school division did provide each student with two masks, as well as having back-up masks available at the school just in case. Students also have the option to bring their own masks. JANAE WANDLER School was back in session last week, starting on September 1, but this year it’s a little different. Most schools, including Art Smith Aviation Academy (ASAA), the public school on base at CFB Cold Lake, had a staggered start for students in grades 1 to 12. On September 1, all students with their last name beginning with A-K came to class, and on September 2 it was for last names starting with L-Z. Kindergarten had staggered entry days by the end of the week. The reason for this was of course due to the

COVID-19 situation. All schools had to implement many new health and safety measures. The staggered entry was a way to have smaller groups in class so they could be taught all the new rules they needed to follow. ASAA’s principal, Chris Vining, was pleased with how the first week went. “It has been an amazing start to this new school year! Staff have done an awesome job setting up their rooms and the school for maximum care and safety of our students. Our parents have been really supportive of all the new changes and it is so exciting to see the energy that our students are bringing back to our school community,”

he commented. Back in March of 2020, when schools all had to shut down and transition to an online learning platform, it was unclear whether this method would need to continue for the 2020/21 school year. After much care and thought went into the matter, the provincial health officials announced that schools could open again with a set standard of rules and regulations that must be followed. Both school districts in the Cold Lake region have opened their doors, but they both have also opened up an opportunity for students to continue with online learning should they choose not to return to the school physically.
