Three members receive 4 Wing commander’s coin for efforts on new shelters

Cpl Matt Pelletier, a reservist from 192 Aldergrove, is receiving the 4 Wing commander’s coin for his contribution to the construction of two temporary EFASS shelters to enhance NORAD capabilities at 4 Wing Cold Lake. Cpl Pelletier’s enthusiasm and work ethic greatly contributed to the erection of these shelters. His knowledge and past experience from previous shelter builds significantly increased the team’s overall efficiently. For this reason he is being presented with the 4 Wing commander’s coin.

Cpl Breanne Tennant, a reservist from 192 Aldergrove, is receiving the 4 Wing commander’s coin for her contribution to the construction of two temporary EFASS shelters to enhance NORAD capabilities at 4 Wing Cold Lake. As a supply tech who is currently awaiting a transfer as Const Tech, she took the opportunity to join this project to expand her professional knowledge and to better prepare for her upcoming trade change. Cpl Tennant’s team work, positive attitude and dedication was instrumental to the safe and timely construction of these shelters. For this reason she is being presented with the 4 Wing commander’s coin.

Operational pause of CT-114 Tutor fleet lifted DEPARTMENT OF NATIONAL DEFENCE AND CANADIAN ARMED FORCES The Commander of 2 Canadian Air Division, Brigadier-General Denis O’Reilly, has today lifted the operational pause on the CT-114 Tutor fleet. He states, “The risk analysis for the CT-114 Tutor fleet undertaken by the airworthiness authorities and their teams of experts was detailed and thorough. I have the utmost confidence in their work, and the mitigation measures developed. These measures will enable the fleet to return to flying operations.”

The operational pause was implemented following a Snowbirds CT-114 Tutor accident in Kamloops, B.C. on May 17, which resulted in the death of Captain Jennifer Casey, the Snowbirds Public Affairs Officer.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way!

4 Wing works hard to bring sports back for the fall!

JOSEY YEARLEY, 4 WING FITNESS AND SPORTS MANAGER It is an undisputed fact that sports participation is imbedded into the very fabric of military culture; proving itself again and again as an effective means of building and maintaining physical, mental and social wellness. That is why, despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 4 Wing Military Sports Department, under the guidance of Wing Leadership, is working hard to bring organized sports programming back to Cold Lake, but it is not a quick and easy task!

Sports fans suffered another torturous blow with the recent announcement that the CFL would be cancelling their 2020 season. Likewise, COVID-19 related restrictions demanded the cancellation of all CAF National Sports this summer. Sadly this moratorium on CAF National sports currently extends right up to the end of the year (i.e. Dec 2020). All the more reason to try and keep local sports programming alive! Rest assured that this is exactly what the 4 Wing Sports Department is focused on.

Our Sports Coordinator, Mr. Jerry Ingham, guided by the action of provincial and national sports bodies, and governed by municipal, provincial, federal and CAF policy, will be working with our Intersection League Executives and individual athletes to determine a safe and workable way forward. A great example of the progress made in support of the return to sport is the release of the “Return to Hockey Plan” by Hockey Alberta. This document, which incorporates the current requirements outlined in Stage 2 of the Government of Alberta’s Relaunch Plan, health and safety guidelines from Hockey Canada, and programming, registration and sanctioning for Hockey Alberta, will serve as a foundational reference in bringing hockey back to 4 Wing this fall, which we fully intend to do! That said, please keep in mind, it won’t be “same old, same old”.

Clearly many adjustments will need to be made to the structure of our leagues and the “conduct of play” for all our intersection sports in order to allow for league operation while respecting the restrictions imposed by COVID-19. For example, it has already been established that we will be working with only one ice surface this year, given that one rink will be required for the conduct of military fitness training due to the need to allow for social distancing while

All this to say…sports are not dead and we have every confidence that we can “breathe new life into them” following the summer hiatus imposed by COVID-19, but what that “new life” will look like is yet to be determined.

In closing, I would like to remind all military members that the Wing Commander is the approving authority for participation in all locally run sports (be that military or civilian in nature). Should military members elect to participate in civilian run sports

Forgive: Now more than ever

A

ction films have never been more popular.

People stepping up and taking matters into their own hands, people dishing out violence in all kinds of forms from the cartoonish punch-ups of the Marvel films to the bloodbaths of the John Wick movies. People love it. It has a timeless quality, because it taps into a universal desire inside all of us: the desire to see justice done. In previous decades, action movies featured heroes of authority – soldiers, sheriffs, cops, and so on. In the last 30 years, legitimate authorities have largely given way to vigilantes and “mavericks” rebelling against corrupt systems and organizations.

But their motivations and outcomes remain the same: justice.

And we eat it up. Because all of us at some point in our lives, have experienced injustice. Someone somewhere at some point (or most often in many points of our lives) has done us dirty. Watching someone else serve up justice to wrongdoers (come on! Who kills a man’s dog?) gives us a vicarious thrill, even satisfaction. It doesn’t take long for this quest for justice at any cost to be internalized, without even meaning to.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

If we are honest with ourselves, we all should know that while we would love to see others get justice, to see them get what they deserve, to reap what they sow, to experience a little “eye for an eye”, we don’t actually want justice for ourselves. We do not want to face up to where we ourselves fall short. Because we know we have. We know that sometimes, even a lot of the time, we don’t live up to our own standards let alone the standards of the world we live in – whether it’s creating exceptions for ourselves behind the steering wheel, or in a million ways we interact with others and put ourselves and our comfort ahead of what is good for someone else… or even everyone else. The truth is: we want others to get what’s coming to them, but not ourselves. We’re special. We have reasons. We have excuses.

There is only one way out of this. There is no relative way to rationalize our own selfish biases.

There is no way to explain away how it is that we accept that we aren’t perfect, but expect it from others, all the time. That path is through forgiveness. Through finding a way to give grace – undeserved kindness – to those who have hurt us, hurt those we love, or hurt

what’s important to us. This is so important in today’s climate of rising tempers, social media fire-stoking, and tendency to simply cut and run rather than work through what can be worked through and come out the other side stronger.

Forgiveness is a subject that is bigger than a few hundred words in a column can encompass. It isn’t as easy as pretending an offence never happened, nor does it mean you set yourself up for re-victimization.

Forgiveness is a process. If you don’t understand how to forgive, or would like someone to help you navigate the process, reach out. 4 Wing has a whole office of people in Mental Health who can help, there is a conflict resolution team here as well, and as always, the 4 Wing Chaplain Team is here for you whenever you need. Don’t wait on forgiveness. Holding onto anger and bitterness only punishes you – most times the object of your anger doesn’t have any clue the pain you are inflicting on yourself. Reach out and begin the process of forgiveness today. The only regret you will have is that you didn’t start sooner.

He retired from the military in 2015 and enrolled in a photography and imaging program at the local college. Deb Lasouski is retiring from the Public Service with all her time served here at 4 Wing. Deb started her career in the Public Service in 1982 at AETE where she remained until 2016. In 2016, she applied for and accepted a position at 4 Wing Admin Flt working various positions until her retirement in 2020.

Deb’s retirement Luncheon and Farewell was well attended on August 28, 2020.

Deb’s family members were able to attend.

Her dad, Richard Lasouski (37 year RCAF Vet), her son Charles, daughter Melanie, daughter- in-law Laini, sisters Cathy and Beverley, brother-in-law Larry, as well as her niece Kathleen and her boyfriend Josh.

Deb will be retiring in Red Deer, AB.
