THE COURIER On September 29, 4 Wing had the pleasure of hosting Major-General (MGen) Eric Kenny, Commander 1 Canadian Air Division (CAD) and Division Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) JC Parent.

The purpose of the visit was to provide MGen Kenny with an opportunity to interact directly with the personnel of 4 Wing, discuss our current challenges, and highlight the outstanding work that we do here

every day. Although our COVID-19 protocols reduced the size of groups and number of personnel with whom we interacted, the visit was a great success and I appreciate the support we received from the entire Wing.� Wing Commander, Col Dave Moar.

The visit included a meeting with Wing Leadership to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on training the next generation of pilots and technicians and tours of several different units. The tours included stops to see the progress of the Expeditionary Forces

Aircraft Shelter System (EFASS) construction, 10 Field Technical Training Squadron (10 FTTS) to see the changes made to ensure physical distancing and safety of students and instructors, 22 Canadian Forces Health Services Centre (22 CFHSC) to see the new facility and discuss the impact of COVID-19, 417 Squadron to tour their new home at Hangar 7 and Commander 1 CAD coin presentations (, and finally 1 Air Maintenance Squadron (1 AMS) to discuss changes and challenges in maintenance.

Top three units to score Wing Commander Cup points for Terry Fox virtual event PERSONNEL SUPPORT PROGRAMS The annual Terry Fox Run, usually an event hosted at 4 Wing Cold Lake for members to participate in, had to be done virtually this year.

As an extra incentive for members to participate in their own unit run, Wing Commander Cup points were awarded for how many members in the unit participated and for how many kilometres they completed. Then the total points earned by a unit were divided by the unit’s strength and expressed as a ratio (this evens the playing field for smaller units). The unit with the highest ratio wins bragging rights!

So, who were the top three units you ask?! The unit that came in first was 4 Operations Support Squadron (4 OSS)! They had 116 participants covering 614 kms (with a unit strength of 174) earning them 4.2 points.

Second place goes to 10 Field Technical Training

Squadron (10 FTTS). They had 40 participants and covered 303 kms. With a unit strength of 130, they received 2.6 points. And finally, our third-place unit is 22 Canadian Forces Health Services Centre (22 CFHSC) with 2.1 Wing Commander Cup points. They had 11 participants cover 65 kms with a unit strength of only 37 members.

The year is not over yet and there are still Wing Commander Cup points to be earned through various activities and events until the end of the Fiscal Year.

One major event coming up will be our CAF Sports Week from October 19 to 24. Get your unit involved and earn points! Details are in the corresponding article on page 4.

The reigning champion is currently 10 FTTS. Is there a unit out there that can dethrone the champion or will 10 FTTS be able to keep hold of the cup? Only time will tell so get your unit involved and fight for your chance to earn this honour!

Let’s be spooky, you and I VANESSA MACNEIL – WELCOME DESK CLERK, COL J.J. PARR SPORTS CENTRE I’ve always loved stories – writing them, hearing them, reading, or telling them. I think that’s probably why I studied English literature and took such delight in seeing what kind of stories we keep telling, and why, and to whom. It was the best when, across all genres and age groups, I found my favorite kind of stories: the scary ones.

I was a spooky kid. Before there was Harry Potter or even Goosebumps, I had The Scariest Stories You’ve Ever Heard. I would read it in bed, I would read it in the sun, I would read it to friends at sleepovers until we all screamed and then laughed at one another.

I read it until the pages fell out because I loved that safe scare. I knew that most of the time, if a character was smart, or just lucky, or listened when their mother said not to go into the deep, dark wood, that they could overcome or outwit the ghosts and monsters. And the scary stories always had the best pictures!

I loved Halloween for the same reasons. It was always fun to get dressed up, run screaming through the neighborhood in the dark with a pack of kids, and collect bags and bags of candy. It was even more fun to confront those things that at any other time of year would have been scary. All the houses festooned in cobwebs, with bones and headstones strewn about the yards, and all of us dressed as ghosts, vampires, or monsters took those frightening things and softened the edges. How scary could skeletons be if your fourth grade teacher had them arranged on the front porch while she dropped some mini chocolate bars into your pillowcase, right?

That’s why I was so excited when Jennifer Bain, Community Recreation Supervisor for Personnel Support Programs (PSP) approached me about doing some virtual storytelling for 4 Wing Recreation in October. We were already dusting off fearsome family favourites at home, so it was the perfect time to share some thrills and chills. Halloween feels a little different this year in the midst of a pandemic, so eager trick

or treaters might have to get some of their thrills and chills in some new ways. That’s how All Hallows’ Read was born.

Every Sunday in October, a new video will be shared on 4 Wing Connection’s Facebook page and 4wingrecreation Instagram page that will feature a spooky story for kids. Nicole at 4 Wing Library had a stack of books ready for me to choose from at a moment’s notice, and told me that she could get more books sent in through the TRAC program. With resources like that available, All Hallows’ Read expanded to include weekly recommendations for grown readers who enjoy a little shiver down their spines.

I hope you’ll join us each Sunday in October for our sessions because it’ll be a real scream.

Life may feel a little weird, and turning on the news may still make you feel anxious but just remember that things are supposed to be weird for Halloween – that’s what makes it fun! And just like in these scary stories, if we’re smart, if we’re brave, and if we all work together, we can overcome anything.

Learning to listen JOY SMITH, REPORTER

In honour of #NationalNewspaperWeek (October 4-10), the staff of the Courier News would like to present a photo of the oldest issue of the Courier Newspaper, that we believe, is in existence: 31 May 1956. The Courier Newspaper’s first issue was printed in October 1955 and was originally published twice a month. Some interesting facts to note about the newspaper content are local telephone numbers that are only two digits, you could buy two bars of soap for 27 cents and the area hotel’s greatest draw is there is hot and cold running water in every room.

The last time Brenda saw her brother she had no idea that two days later he would be dead by his own hand. Several years later, that last visit with her brother played over and over again in Brenda’s mind as the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) instructor described some of the warning signs of individuals contemplating suicide. “If I had paid better attention to how my brother was acting and the things he talked about maybe he would still be here today. He just needed someone to listen to him.”

The 4 Wing Military Family Resource Centre runs the ASIST course four times per year and they have recently added two new courses Safetalk and Straight Talk.

ASIST is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don’t need any formal training to attend the workshop—anyone 18 or older can learn and use the ASIST model.

Safe Talk is a 3.5 hour workshop that helps alert one to warning signs indicating risk of suicide. The workshop emphasizes the importance of recognizing the signs, communicating with the person at risk and getting help or resources for the person at risk.

Straight Talk is a half day interactive workshop created for individuals working with youth aged 12 to 24. Straight Talk encompasses the developmental, cognitive, and emotional differences found within this age group in presenting strategies to strengthen the protective factors of youth at risk of suicide. Relevant intervention strategies are explored through videos and case studies.

All three courses are free to military members, spouses, dependents, veterans, and members of the Defence Team. A $50 deposit per course is required when participants register which will be refunded once the course is completed. The courses are also available to members of the community for a fee.

Courses are limited to a maximum of 20 people and all COVID protocols are in place.

“ASIST benefits everyone,” says Sheri Scott, Family Education Coordinator. “Our community is so rural and it is so small, we are a giant family so why are we not taking the time to look out for one another? These courses will let you do that.”

Courses do expire so if you took the ASIST course more than three years ago it’s time to have a refresher.

“Let’s do the prevention before it gets to the interventions,” says Scott. It’s time to start listening.

Celebrating women in aviation The Canadian Armed Forces are a world leader in gender integration and the employment of women in all occupations. In October, the RCAF celebrates Women’s History Month and the participation of women in the field of aviation.

LIEUTENANT JAMES CARRUTHERS In 1974, six years before the job of Canadian Armed Forces pilot was opened to women, Major Wendy Clay got her wings.

Major Clay, who would go on to earn the rank of major-general, was a doctor

in Canada’s military. She undertook the pilot training to have a better understanding of the medical needs of pilots and other aircrew.

She held the title as Canada’s only qualified female military aviator until 1979, when three female captains undertook training to get their wings after the occupation was opened to women. For these three women, Captains Deanna Brasseur, Leah Mosher and Nora Bottomley, the runway to earning their wings was burdened with a heavy amount of attention and pressure because of their trailblazer status. Captain Brasseur said that the age

and rank difference between her and the male pilots led to them feeling isolated from the training group. Following these first three women, the Canadian Armed Forces would train and employ 40 total female pilots as part of its initial wave of training.

Women are an integral part of Canada’s military, serving at all ranks – from private to general, and in all environments – with no restrictions on the jobs they can undertake.

The Canadian Armed Forces are a world leader in terms of the proportion of women in its military and in the areas in which they may serve. Among

its allies, Canada is highly regarded as being at the forefront of military gender integration.

Captain Brasseur, later major, along with Captain Jane Foster went on to become one of the first women to pilot a CF-188 Hornet. She is also noted in the annals of military aviation history for being the first woman to investigate a military aviation accident in Canada.

In recent years, women of the Royal Canadian Air Force have gone on to achieve such successes as those of Brigadier-General Lise Bourgon, a former helicopter pilot who assumed command

of Joint Task Force-Iraq in May 2015. Also in 2015, Lieutenant-General Christine Whitecross became the first woman to hold that rank.

She was also the first female commander of Joint Task Force North and the first woman appointed as Chief Military Engineer.

The conflict of interests

feel privileged to have attended the Resolving Conflict Effectively course that took place here in Cold Lake last week. I’m thankful for the enthusiasm of MWO Trevor Parkinson from Conflict and Complaint Management Services (CCMS) and Marco Favasoli, a Mediator in what we typically refer to as Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR), who really brought the course content to life with their real life experience and commentary (purely for training purposes).

One of the first things they point out is that there are four ways to seek resolution to conflict: Power, Rights, Avoidance, and Interest-based. Power means you go to the chain of command; Rights means you submit a grievance, or a harassment complaint, etc; Avoidance means you just forget about it; and Interest – which is what CCMS is promoting – means that you sit down and deal with the conflict, mano-a-mano. As chaplain, I help people with all of these, and I’ve noticed that the last one is the least popular. In part, this is because everyone is in the right – they just need the appropriate authorities to see their point of view and everything would go away....

But if we were to try this collaborative method to

work through our differences, Trevor and Marco have a solid process to help us walk through that together.

You see, our default setting is to jump to a solution: I know exactly what you need to do to make things right, and you know exactly what I need to do, and since ‘both of these things are not like the other’, we end up in a shouting match that goes nowhere. So let’s back up and figure out what our interests are.

All conflict between me and you is caused by the conflict of our interests. Interests, broadly, are needs and wants, from basic necessities of food, water and shelter, to the deeper longings of purpose and meaning, values, ethics. Conflict arises when one of my interests is threatened, or I perceive it to be threatened, by your interests. From the outset, our interests look irreconcilable. That is why we jump to other resolution strategies – it seems hopeless, I’m being reasonable, so you must be unreasonable. But, if you take the time to talk about it together (in an unthreatening way – start by asking the other what their interests are; why is this thing so important to them?), you inevitably find that you and I have common interests, beneath the surface.

If we can find some common ground, then the rest flows somewhat more naturally. We brainstorm possible solutions – the crazy ones along with the rational. Then we decide which solutions to keep and which to throw away. Finally, we decide together how to move forward and do a (COVID) shake on it. Sometimes, conflict is caused by a misunderstanding and can be resolved simply by talking about it!

Then again, interests will remain irreconcilable if we only think of ourselves. Jesus’ brother James wrote this: “What causes fights and quarrels among you?

Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have... You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight.”

Instead, we should “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” When you know that you have an all-powerful God with your interests in mind, you can lower your defenses and help the other meet theirs. andrew.whitman@forces.gc.ca

Artist Spotlight Featuring Art from Military and First Responders MCpl Lee-Ann LeMesurier MCpl Lee-Ann LeMesurier joined the Canadian Forces as a reservist in 2008. She joined as a Signal Operator and continues to serve as a Senior Human Resource Administrator with 16 Wing Air Reserve Flight.

While working to obtain her military qualifications MCpl LeMesurier also completed her Fine Arts Diploma at Georgian College, ON Barrie. She graduated in the spring of 2010 with honours and multiple scholarships and awards beneath her. She also had valuable experience at the Georgian Campus Gallery, as a volunteer gallery assistant. This valuable experience granted her a teaching assistant’s position in the VanGo program with the MacLaren Art Gallery in Barrie. MCpl LeMesurier remains in Borden with her husband (retired) Corporal Conrad Bourque and her two children. She continues to generate art, teach art and support the art community all while continuing to support her country with service.

Thirty words is a series of tile works that was done by Lee-Ann. The tiles tell ‘someones’ story as it would be short formed into a Morse code message. The message is then transferred to a ceramic tile for permanent transmission.

417 Squadron shows the way JOY SMITH On September 27, 2020, 417 Squadron (Sqn) along with RCMP conducted a successful search and rescue (SAR) operation on the west shore of Cold Lake near the English Bay campground.

RCMP received a call from two distressed kayakers via cell phone saying that a kayak had overturned and the kayaker was unable to get back into their craft and that hypothermia

was setting in. 417 Sqn was dispatched at 7:30 pm to search for the distressed kayakers and attempt to guide RCMP boats to complete a rescue.

The weather throughout the area was good that day but with strong winds blowing out of the northwest the kayakers were driven further from their point of departure. At approximately 8:00 pm, with the assistance of night vision goggles the 417 Sqn crew spotted a light from the kayaker’s cell phone.

417 Sqn members directed RCMP to the distressed kayakers by using the Night Sun to spotlight the victims and signal their location to the RCMP boats, GPS co-ordinates were also relayed.

After RCMP located the kayakers the 417 Sqn crew remained in the area in case a medevac was required by air for the hypothermic casualties.

It was ultimately decided that ground transport would be the most effective means of recovery.

“Both kayakers were wearing life

jackets. It likely saved their lives,” stated Capt Rob Campbell, Deputy Commanding Officer of 417 Sqn. “With the cold water they would not have been able to swim for long.”

Capt Campbell would also like to remind boaters that, “It’s best to avoid Cold Lake or other large lakes when the winds are strong, especially in small water craft – it doesn’t take much to get pulled away from shore and then the waves get large and can cause you to capsize.”

The Cold Lake Air Force Museum will be open every Thursday in October and is ready to welcome groups.

Visitors can enjoy self-guided visits, by reservation only.

No walk-ins will be accepted.

All reservations must be pre-booked.

Reservations spots are an hour in length beginning at 10 am. The last reservation spot is at 2pm.

Visitors will be asked to keep their visit within the 1 hour window in order to maintain social distancing for other groups.

Groups will be limited to a maximum of 10 people per reservation.

Masks are mandatory for all visitors including children in grade 4 and above.

All visitors must use sanitizer before entering the museum.

Washrooms will not be available for visitors.

Admission is $5.00/person or $10.00/immediate family.

The Museum is cash only at this time.
