MFRCS Smile Cookie campaign raises big funds

Canada Post to offer free regular parcel service to deployed CAF members NATIONAL DEFENCE

For the fifteenth consecutive year Canada Post will provide free regular parcel services for family and friends of deployed CAF members from 13 October 2020 to 8 January 2021. Parcels will be delivered free of charge from any Canada Post retail outlet to designated CAF bases, which will be forwarded through the CAF postal system to CAF members overseas.

Additionally, Canada Post will also continue to provide free delivery of letters (under 500 grams) to deployed troops until 31 December 2020.

This offer is restricted to those operations served by the following addresses: • Halifax, NS B3K 5X5; • Belleville, ON K8N 5W6; and • Victoria, BC V9A 7N2.

The Mighty Hercules celebrates 60 years in the RCAF ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE PUBLIC AFFAIRS

“That original role is interesting considering that 435 Squadron is now a tactical air-to-air refueling squadron supporting the fighter forces,” he said.

“The genesis of the Hercules in Canada started with support to the fighter force, and we continue to do that in different ways 60 years later.”

Over time the aircraft evolved into a SAR platform, all the while continuing with diverse missions at home and

around the world.

“We have members with us now whose fathers and even grandfathers flew in RCAF Hercules, including me,” said LCol Jordan.

As the Hercules’ role in the RCAF has evolved over the past 60 years, it will continue to change moving forward, particularly with the arrival of the new CC-295 Kingfisher SAR aircraft to the RCAF fleet. 435 Squadron will adapt, as the new Kingfisher fleet

becomes operational and the Buffalo aircraft are retired. The squadron will still conduct SAR, but in an expanded role that includes providing support to the Victoria SAR region. Air-to-air refueling will still take place, as will transport work as required.

“Our role will not change, but our span of responsibility will actually get bigger,” said LCol, Jordan. “The Hercules is a platform that has served us well and will continue to do so.

When the engineers and designers at Lockheed created the Hercules aircraft in the 1950s, it’s doubtful they had any idea how versatile and iconic the plane would turn out to be for the Royal Canadian Air Force. In 1960, 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron received the first operational B-Model Hercules. The squadron flies the updated H-model today.

“The Hercules is an absolute work horse,’’ said LCol Art Jordan, Commanding Officer of 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron at 17 Wing Winnipeg, one of four squadrons that fly the H-model Hercules. “Built to function in regular and austere environments, this aircraft has been an amazing asset to the RCAF.’’ In addition to the H-model Hercules, the RCAF operates the latest model, the CC-130J Hercules.

At 435 Squadron the planes are primarily used for search and rescue (SAR), and air-to-air refueling, but they can be called upon for a variety of transport roles. Its design, with a huge back door that opens up the full cargo department, allows for a wide array of cargo to be carried.

“These planes have literally been around the world and have just about carried anything everywhere. On countless United Nations and NATO missions, into Afghanistan over the 10 years of that conflict, and into the high Arctic, they can and have carried everything from armoured vehicles and other planes to soldiers and evacuees,’’ said LCol Jordan.

The original role was as a longrange cargo carrying aircraft that would replace the CC-119, named Corporal Darryl Hepner “the Flying Boxcar”. One of the first jobs was to transport CF-104 CC-130 Hercules aircraft sit on the tarmac at 17 Wing Winnipeg, Manitoba, at dawn on October 13, 2020, fighter aircraft from Canada, as they before taking off to fly over Winnipeg to mark the 60th year of service of the aircraft in the Royal Canadian were built, over to Canadian bases in Air Force.

eddings are an almost universal custom.

The world over, no matter what culture or corner of the world you are from, there is almost always a ceremony that commits the couple to one another.

This commitment is important: science is showing more and more in the study of relationships and intimacy that emotional safety and trust is part of the very fabric of how human beings are made. The longer term those relationships are, the better it is for everyone: for the couple, and also for any children that come from or are nurtured by that relationship.

Speaking generally, most wedding ceremonies across cultures also involve the blessing or partnership of the relationship with the divine in one form or another. It is believed that the involvement of another person, spirit or power will sustain that relationship through challenges that might otherwise break it. It seems there is something inside all of us that knows if left to ourselves, we are likely to blow it otherwise. Seeking an authority to be a higher appeal, to be a settler of disputes,

and in some cases, the highest value relationship to put things into perspective has been valuable for many couples. Statistics bear this out – divorce rates in highly committed religious people are generally well below the societal average.

But it isn’t just the spiritual that can strengthen a relationship. Have you ever noticed that all marriages in Canada require two witnesses? Have you ever wondered why? If you look back into more traditional wedding vow arrangements you can discover the reason why weddings are public affairs that involve sometimes whole communities.

It is because the witnesses of a public wedding are called, commissioned, and enlisted to be an actual part of the wedding itself. To support the couple, reinforce their bond with one another, and ensure they are thriving as a couple. Sharing wisdom when needed, providing shoulders to cry on in others, but always encouraging them to settle their differences and return to one another.

This view of the role of witness has largely faded, and perhaps that is a big reason why so many relationships fail these days. In our hyper-

independent, mind-your-own-business lifestyles, we have forgotten that the very bedrock of our security, our intimate couple bond, is not just about each other. It’s bigger than two people.

It is never too late to turn a corner and invite people to support you in this way. If you have never had a wedding, maybe think about planning one… and intentionally include a call to the attendees to support and care for your relationship as much as they care for you. If you are already married but feel like that call to support was missing from your initial wedding vows, lots of people hold special anniversary vow renewals. Why not do one and include such an intentional call in that ceremony?

When those you care about, those who know you best, those who support you and live alongside you have promised to care as much about your marriage or relationship as they care about you personally, you have a strong support that can make all the difference between going the distance and becoming another divorce statistic. oliver.edwards@forces.gc.ca

Let’s have a safe Halloween THE COURIER 4 Wing and the City of Cold Lake encourages residents who wish to celebrate Halloween by trick-ortreating or handing out candy, to do so responsibly while adhering to all necessary health protocols. Halloween creates opportunities for the spread of COVID-19 through the exchange of candy and additional social interactions. It is encouraged for all parents and children to be as safe as possible and avoid unnecessary risk this Halloween. The City has chosen not to implement any bylaws that impose a curfew for Halloween like other municipalities have done. In reference to Halloween celebrations, Kevin Nagoya, Chief Administrative Officer with the City stated, “Since the pandemic began, we have been closely following the guidelines set out by Alberta Health. Given the consistently low number of active cases here in Cold Lake, we’re leaving that decision up to families.”

On base, many Residential Housing Unit (RHU) residents will not be comfortable hosting trick or treaters this Halloween. If you do not want trick or treaters approaching your RHU, make it obvious by turning off the exterior lights, closing drapes, etc. For

trick or treaters, only approach RHU’s where it is clear that you are welcome.

Alberta Health Services provides the following guidance to ensure that those participating in Halloween activities are as safe as possible (https:// w w w.a lber t a.ca / ha l loween- du r ingcovid19.aspx): - For those trick-or-treating: • Don’t go trick or treating if feeling ill, even if symptoms are minor • Choose costumes that allow a non-medical mask to be worn underneath - make sure you can see and breathe comfortably • Minimize contact with others:

trick-or-treat with your family or cohort, remain within your community, and stay 2 metres apart • Avoid touching doorbells or railings: call “trick or treat” from 2 metres away, use hand sanitizer after touching surfaces • Wash hands and disinfect packages before eating candy - For those who are handing out candy: • Don’t hand out candy if feeling ill or isolating • Wear a non-medical mask that fully covers your nose and mouth • Insist that trick-or-treaters call

Kicking off CAF Sports Week with a Volksmarch Aviator Avery Philpott

Wing Commander, Col Dave Moar, and WCWO CWO Lee Darling lead the way for the kick-off of 4 Wing’s first ever CAF Sports Week on Monday, October 19, 2020.

Monday was designated as a day for units to participate in a Volksmarch. This was the warm-up event to a week’s worth of activities that centre around an adapted version of a triathlon called “Try-a-Tri”. Members will spend the remainder of the week swimming laps, taking a spin on the spin bike and/or going for a run on the treadmill. The week will close on Friday with a cool-down event consisting of Yoga.

Community Recreation ends CAF Sports Week with some virtual fun JENNIFER BAIN, COMMUNITY RECREATION SUPERVISOR In support of 4 Wing’s CAF Sports Week, our recreation team has put together an amazing day filled with fun virtual events to get the whole family moving.

This event takes place at the end of Sports Week, Saturday 24 October, 2020.

Defence team members can enjoy the full day of activities, or choose to participate in ones that suit their interest.

Activities include; yoga and Zumba for adults, a move and play class and scavenger hunt for kids, and an outdoor exploration segment for the whole family.

Since our recreation team believes that FUN and FITNESS goes hand in hand, we also have some fun prizes to be won. Preregistration is required for our scavenger hunt and all

419 Squadron pilot breaks Canadian glider altitude record SUBMITTED On October 6th 2020, Melanie Paradis, a Cardiovascular Perfusionist from Edmonton and Patrick Pelletier, a 419 Squadron Pilot took off from the Cowley glider strip in a two-seat glider belonging to the Edmonton Soaring Club and succeeded to break an almost six decades old altitude record. The previous record, which was set in 1961 stood at 29,799 feet. Melanie and Patrick soared well above that height and broke the record by almost 2000 feet. The height they achieved was 31,727 feet at the time of writing.

The record claim still requires to be ratified through a lengthy process which includes the calibration of the flight recorder, analysis of the flight record and verification by the Soaring Association of Canada officials.

The Cowley glider strip, located just a few kilometres north of Cowley is home to the Lethbridge Soaring Club and has been known for decades as the “Mecca” of high altitude soaring in Canada. Glider pilots from all over North America congregate here twice a year in the hopes of experiencing a weather phenomenon called a “mountain wave.”

CAF Female Top Gun Jane Foster ROSS LEES, THE CONTACT

Eventually returning to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan with her husband who had been appointed Base Commander, she went back into training and eventually became an instructor. She recalls that time as exciting. She would teach flying during the day, come home and teach her son how to drive, then take her daughter to dance lessons.

Does she miss the flying? Yes and no. “I’m not 20 anymore and it takes a lot of energy,” she stated. “I noticed that the last few years on the job. I loved flying, but it’s harder on the body as you get older and I truly would come home exhausted.

When we finally stopped, it was almost in relief. “What I still miss is the absolute joy of flying and chasing after the clouds and just having fun, not that we did a lot of that in the military,” she quickly underscores with a chuckle. She remains very high on the military and would recommend the life to anyone. In fact, their son is currently in Moose Jaw following in his parents’ footsteps. Finally, able to spend some time doing what she wants, she is taking some fitness classes. “I guess I’ve become a little bit selfish,” she noted, drawing a laugh from this reporter. If that’s selfishness, we all should suffer from it.

Captain (retired) Jane Foster CD Captain Jane Foster CD (retired) was appointed as Honorary Colonel of 2 Canadian Forces Flying Training Squadron (CFFTS), 15 Wing Moose Jaw, SK in September 2018.

Honorary Colonel Foster joined the Canadian Forces in 1982 as a pilot candidate under the umbrella of the SWINTER DND trial (Service-Women Captain (retired) Jane in Non-Traditional Environments and Foster CD. Roles). She obtained her military wings in 1984 and was posted to 2CFFTS Moose Jaw as an instructor.

Flying the CT-114 Tutor jet, she taught at the school for four years, obtaining an A2 Instructor category rating.

In 1988, Honorary Colonel Foster was selected be in the first cadre of women CF-18 fighter pilots.

In June, she made history as the first of two women to graduate as fighter pilots since the end of World War II. Honorary Colonel Foster was posted to 441 Tactical Fighter Squadron at 4 Wing Cold Lake. At the time a NORAD squadron, she achieved Combat Ready status after six months, partook in the intercept and escort of the very first Soviet Union fighter aircraft (MiG-29 Fulcrum) to fly through Canadian domestic airspace and participated in a host of military exercises.

Honorary Colonel Foster retired from the Forces in 1992, a temporary arrangement, to help raise two children. In 1999, she accompanied her husband to 3 Wing Bagotville and rejoined the RCAF working at 3 Wing Operations in a parttime reserve position.

In 2006, Honorary Colonel Foster returned to Moose Jaw and was invited to rejoin 2CFFTS once again as an instructor. Refreshing her flying skills on the CT-156 Harvard II, she returned to her alma mater, Apache Flight and ended her forces career doing the job she loved best, helping student pilots achieve their dream of becoming military pilots. Honorary Colonel Foster retired from the CAF in 2008.

Since then, Honorary Colonel Foster studied at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition and became a Registered Holistic Nutritionist. She is a fitness enthusiast who enjoys a multitude of sports.
