The Canadian Rangers’ response to COVID-19 DEFENCE STORIES On August 18, 2020, the Office of Strategic Partner Engagement (OSPE) organized a virtual roundtable discussion between three members of the 2nd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group (2 CRPG) and two professors specializing in safety, security and sovereignty issues in the Polar Regions. The spread of COVID-19 in remote and isolated communities has been a concern for academics, civil and government authorities since the beginning of the pandemic’s announcement, and the threat of the 2nd wave only accentuates this concern.

The discussion was planned to allow the Canadian Rangers to share their experience in the field. “They are part of a reserve unit responsible for maintaining a military presence in the least populated regions of Canada,” explained Captain Julie Pagé. In doing so, the intention behind the organization of the virtual round table was to provide a concrete illustration of the initiatives included in the COVID-19 awareness program, but participants quickly addressed the indirect contribution of Canadian Ranger patrols to strengthening the human security of Quebec’s Arctic communities. This tangent increased the interest of the two researchers who have written extensively on the historical and contemporary role of the Canadian Armed Forces in the North, search and rescue and emergency management in the region, Canada-U.S. relations, and the evolution of international law in the Arctic and Antarctic.

Champion’s message for Women’s History Month 2020 REAR-ADMIRAL REBECCA PATTERSON, DEFENCE CHAMPION FOR WOMEN October is Women’s history month, and National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) are pleased to join the international community in highlighting the achievements of women and their important contributions throughout history on the world stage. We are making a significant mark in our history this year as we overcome new challenges brought on by the COVID-19 global pandemic and introduce new ideas and concepts that will help shape our institution and society.

Canadian women have been serving in Canada’s military for over a century and continue to play a pivotal role in defending Canada’s safety and security. This year, we commemorate the International Year

of the Nurse and the Midwife. Nurses have served in Canada’s military since the 1885 North-West Campaign and nursing sisters were the first women to receive military rank in Canada.

Women in the Defence Team, including our nurses, have served our country with distinction in its time of need, and more recently, have taken on important roles and made significant contributions in areas impacted by COVID-19.

I am proud that the Defence Team includes so many outstanding women who are continuing the legacy of our predecessors and truly making a difference in the lives of Canadians.

The emergence of the global COVID-19 pandemic has changed life as we know it. The strength of women was pushed to the forefront this year, as many took on additional family responsibilities, whilst continuing to fulfil

Each of us has some habits

A

habit you don’t like?

Each of us has some habits. They also have their advantages: they simplify our lives, bring a nice sense of stability and, over time, become second nature to us. Is there anything wrong with that? Probably not – as long as the habits themselves are not bad for us.

Because if they are, it is worth changing them.

Theoretically, nothing easier ... and have you ever tried? Exactly.

Why is it so hard to change a habit? This is not a big secret; it is simply that, over time, the habit grows so tightly with us that it becomes an integral part of ourselves. Removing something like that just can’t be painless. And that’s why we have to use a trick.

First of all, let’s carefully identify the enemy.

Unfortunately, it is not enough to say to yourself, “from now (or tomorrow) I will be a different person.”

We have to name the problem and think about why it bothers us and why we want to change it. It is also worth realizing or even writing down how much we will gain when we make this change. Only then can we proceed.

And by the way – don’t expect miracles. I mean miracles are to be expected every day, but we should not expect that we will overcome a habit established from childhood heroically in a week.

Such things are only in fairy tales. In real life, we’ll probably need a little more time. But the sooner we start, the sooner we will win.

After a successful competition for 2019, the Canadian Forces Newspapers are once again looking for youth from military families or Cadets between 13 and 18 who want to report on a story or issue which is important to their life or the community around them.

The story must be original and about an issue or a personal experience or insight which has not been widely reported about before and/or reflects the life of the contributor or their friends and/or family.

You should state why you think you reporting the story or issue will bring a unique perspective to it, but also how you would widen your report to look at the issues around the subject.

Then Canadian Forces Newspaper Managers will choose the most unique and powerful stories - which

So the change will cost us a little – but it is possible; and our ally in the eradication of a habit will be ... another habit. After all, the wedge is best removed with the wedge. So much for theories – and now let’s move on to practical issues, i.e. how to implement this “wisdom.” The habits that we want to remove may concern completely trivial matters, but also, let’s be honest, important issues.

It will be a bit different to get rid of the habit of biting your nails, and it will be another thing to get rid of the habit of getting into toxic relationships.

But let’s take a closer look at something that probably affects all of us – eating habits. “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw”…a donut.

How can we apply the wedge principle here?

It depends. For example, if we have the habit of snacking on sweets before going to bed (and we often do – and don’t ask how I know about it), we can either have an uneven fight every night (and finally lose), or replace it with a habit of munching something else. For example, fruit chips. Or carrots. Or kohlrabi. And so on – there are many options, but the most important thing is to think about them before the evening sets in, and we, hungry, tired and already in our PJs, will feel an irresistible desire to eat a little something.

Staying on the dish – related topics: let us pay attention to how much our habits limit us and make us ossify in our usual habits. And that leads us to boredom ... no matter how old we are. The thing

is happening completely imperceptibly. When going to the store, we park in the same place if possible, we follow a certain path, and finally we pack the same products into the basket as usual.

And then at home, we use them to prepare the same dishes as last week. And as in the previous one. And so on ... In a word, terrible boredom.

And how is such a person supposed to undertake great changes?

That is why it is worth starting the fight against habits – even those that do not have the slightest relation to food – with small matters, such as everyday shopping. Let’s take a different route than usual. Let’s buy a different pasta than always.

Let’s try a completely new recipe. OK, maybe we’ll make a mistake and lose a precious quarter of an hour of our lives cooking something that will turn out to be a major culinary disaster and will be completely inedible. But at least there will be something to remember and maybe to tell stories later.

But maybe we will just discover our new favorite dish? Maybe inspired by its taste, we will go to the country of its origin on our next vacation? (Of course after the pandemic!) Maybe we will meet interesting people who will inspire us to change our daily routine, discover a new hobby, or simply become our friends? We don’t know that. And it would be a shame not to find out.

4K in prizes up for grabs in Game On CANEX PETER MALLETT A revamped contest by CANEX launches later this month and plans to catch the attention of all gaming enthusiasts.

Game On CANEX kicks off on Oct. 22 and is open to all Canadian Armed Forces members. The contest offers four separate sweepstakes for four consecutive weeks with a total of $4,000 in prizes going up for grabs.

In the first week, a HyperX Gaming Bundle and an AndaSeat Dark Knight Gaming Chair are the two featured prizes. The following week’s prizes include: two Oculus VR headsets, the brand new Xbox Series X, and the brand new Sony Playstation 5.

This year’s event replaces the

CANEX Championship Gaming Series (CCGS) that ran from 2016 to 2019.

The Gaming Series attracted about 400 participants and viewers each year and saw military members put their gaming skills to the test against other competitors. Michael Prouty, CANEX Segment Marketing Manager, says earlier this year the decision was made to change the format to offer wider appeal to all CAF community gamers.

While those who participated

in or watched the live stream of the tournament had a great time, Prouty points out that the original game series spoke to a very small portion of the entire CANEX Gaming community, which he estimates to be approximately 30,000 people.

“Based on these numbers, we decided to revamp the format and appeal to a much larger population of gamers in the CAF community with Game On CANEX,” said Prouty.

“Given the fact that these prizes will be in high demand for the holiday shopping season, I am quite confident the participation numbers will be quite significant.”

In order to enter the contest, applicants must provide their first and last name, email address, and their CF1 number in an entry form found on the soon-to-be-launched event webpage http://www.gameoncanex.com A full list of prizes for each draw is also available on the website.

Registered CAF members can earn more entries for each weekly prize draw by completing different tasks. They will include following contest clues and answering trivia questions provided in regular CANEX emails, Instagram and Facebook posts.
