Let the giving begin

Members of 4 Wing Cold Lake donate food to the Christmas Hamper Campaign, at Wing Headquarters, 4 Wing Cold Lake, Alberta, on November 4, 2020. From left to right: Captain (Capt) Andrew Whitman, Capt Oliver Edwards, 4 Wing Commander Colonel Dave Moar, 4 Wing Chief Warrant Officer Lee Darling, Major Howard Rittenhouse. JOY SMITH, REPORTER 2020 has been a different year for everyone and the world has witnessed a great deal of changes. One thing that has not changed this year and perhaps is needed even more is the 4 Wing Christmas Hamper Campaign and the Angel Tree program. Beginning on 12 November, the 4 Wing units will collect and distribute food hampers and children’s toys

to families of the 4 Wing military community who are struggling during the Christmas season. Volunteer OPIs for each unit on 4 Wing will be responsible for canvassing their unit to collect donated food and organize efforts to pack and deliver the hampers to St. Mark’s Chapel. Each hamper will contain non-perishable foodstuffs, gift cards for produce and meat, plus household supplies that should last about a week. The gift cards

in each hamper are provided by Support Our Troops and Hamel’s Meats. If providing the makings of a great Christmas dinner isn’t enough giving for you, then keep an eye out for the Angel Tree that will appear on 17 November at the CANEX mall. The tree will be decorated with cards shaped as angels, each card gives the age, gender and toy preference for an anonymous child. Participants are asked to purchase a gift for that child and bring it, unwrapped,

to the Chaplain’s office. Anyone seeking assistance through the Christmas Hamper Campaign may download a registration form or complete the form online through the 4 Wing splash page and submit the form to the Chaplains office by email or by hard copy. All COVID protocols will be in place during the campaign. Measures include sanitizing, proper handling and quarantining of donated goods.

Sentinels play a key role to helping those struggling DOUG BROWN, TRANSITION ADVISOR, TRANSITION CENTRE COLD LAKE On 21 September 2020, the 4 Wing Padres led by Padre Jones conducted Sentinel Training for the Wing. Members of the 4 Wing Transition Centre had the opportunity to take this very important training. For those that are not aware of the Sentinel Program, it is a peer-support program led and overseen by Canadian Armed Forces chaplains. The program was first introduced to 4 Wing in 2017 and has grown to over 200 members. Sentinels are trained, volunteer CAF members and DND employees who support their peers, particularly in times of distress. Through their informed presence within their units, the Sentinels play an important role in the prevention, detection, and support for colleagues who may be struggling and in need of help.

The program’s strength comes from identifying and utilizing peers and coworkers to provide front line care to fellow colleagues. When it comes to helping members who may be in crisis or suffering silently, there is no one better suited than a trusted peer, that is, a colleague who sincerely cares and is willing to listen and provide help. Military members in distress may find it difficult to ask for help for any number of reasons, including personal pride, feelings of isolation, or social pressure. In the Sentinel Program, peers are trained to keep an eye out for signs of distress in their colleagues, particularly with respect to mental health. The Staff of the Transition Centre is now equipped with this new training and a great partnership with the Padres has been strengthened to be better able to support the Members and Families of the greater 4 Wing Community.

A

few pre-COVID months ago, I presided at my oldest son’s wedding [cue reactions of shock: “The padre can’t be old enough to have a married son!”; or sympathy: “Poor kid. His Dad is going to be merciless.”] Well, it’s true. My firstborn took the biggest step of his life and his mom and I were (and are) proud and excited. And no, I’m not just pretending. In fact, our middle son is also getting married - in January (COVID willing!) and we’ll be just as proud and excited. If you have kids who are married, you can imagine what it means. I can recall like it was yesterday the day my oldest was born (a Sunday – naturally – and he interrupted my sermon), his first day at kindergarten, his first sarcastic comment. Now he’s 25, married, owns a house, a dog and a cat, a wreck of a ’69 Ford F-100, and a ’76 Parisienne, and I think he’s one of the greatest kids on the planet. I really do. It’s just unnerving, in a way, just how fast the time has flown. I was a country pastor when he was born. My family and I have grown, done a lot, seen a lot (and not always together), and loved almost every minute of it. And it makes me reflective. I’ve had more than a few members in my office whose marriages and families have fallen apart; who are dazed and confused. They too had dreams and hopes for the future, but those dreams and hopes lie shattered around them. They’re haggard, not hopeful; drained, not dreaming; exhausted, not excited. It’s heartbreaking. Multitudes of missed opportunities to cultivate a marriage

Schwindt. As for a career in the Reserves, MWO Schwindt suggests, “If you are curious, explore, especially with the reserves because unlike the reg [regular] force you are not committed…if you don’t like it you can be out in 30 days. If it looks interesting, if you’re curious try it, if you can do it, your self image will expand exponentially. If you don’t succeed, at least you know you tried.” Although remaining in Cold Lake for the past 30 years, MWO Schwindt has maintained a strong interest in professional development, availing herself of many training opportunities provided by DND to increase her trade and leadership knowledge, living up to her philosophy that “a day is not wasted if you learn something new.”

and family litter the roadsides of their lives. As I told my son and his bride, marriage takes work to make it work. It takes commitment, life-long commitment. It’s not for the timid. But it is worth it! It is unquestionably and undeniably worth it! And if you’re finding your marriage or relationship more than usually difficult, if you’re at your wit’s end with your kid(s), if you’re finding yourself wondering what greener pastures may lie on the other side of the fence, take a pause. Talk to someone. Talk to a padre. Talk to a counselor with CFMAP. Talk to a social worker. Talk to a trusted friend or family member. Most of all – talk to your spouse. Keeping the lines of communication open is the single most important key to a healthy relationship. Believe me. As the cause of more than a few arguments in my long marriage, we were able to survive – and thrive - because we talk, because we trust each other. And trust doesn’t just happen. It takes years to build, but only a moment to smash. In the past, experts believed that major betrayals are what led to divorce. Relationship experts Drs. John and Julie Gottman spent the last four decades studying romantic relationships to find out what makes a marriage successful. They report that couples who remain together are more likely to be attentive to their partner’s needs and wants. They’ve found that following a “magic relationship ratio” of 5 positive interactions for every 1 negative interaction can predict a couple’s ability to stay together. In fact, they were able to predict a marriage’s

outcome correctly 90% of the time based on this. It’s interesting when you consider that repeatedly giving your partner annoyed or angry glances (guilty) can have the same eventual impact on your marriage as infidelity. Most of us don’t walk down the aisle fantasizing about long, tense

conversations about finances, kids, why who did what to whom, or which way to hang the toilet roll. But it’s those conversations – testing, tough, and tedious – on which the solid foundation of marriage is built. So talk on, and talk often! howard.rittenhouse@forces.gc.ca

75th Anniversary

End of the Second World War Courier News Remembers 2020 This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. For the month of November, the Courier News will feature events that Canadians were involved in that helped with the war efforts. We honour, recognize and remember all those who served in WWII.

National Aboriginal Veterans’ Day was Sunday, 8 November VETERAN AFFAIRS CANADA The First Nations, Métis and Inuit people of Canada have a long and proud tradition of military service to our country. Here are just some highlights of their contributions to the Second World War. Answering the call again When the Second World War erupted in September 1939, many Indigenous people again answered the call of duty and joined the military. By March 1940, more than 100 of them had volunteered and by the end of the conflict in 1945, over 3,000 First Nations members, as well as an unknown number of Métis, Inuit and other Indigenous recruits, had served in uniform. While some did see action with the Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force, most would serve in the Canadian Army. Continued on page 10...

A Message from the Legion TODD RORKE, PRESIDENT, BR. 211 COLD LAKE As Legionnaires, being the guardians of Remembrance, we are the people behind the poppy, and we pledge this promise to remember at every meeting. With these trying times, I am sad to say that this year the Cold Lake branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will not be conducting a community service for Remembrance Day. With the COVID-19 restrictions there is just no way to conduct such a large ceremony at the Energy Center and keep everyone safe. However, we are placing our poppy trays as per normal and we ask that everyone help us show our respect to our veterans by wearing a poppy during the days of Remembrance (31 October to the 11th November). We also encourage parents to get their children involved in the Poem and Poster contest that is conducted every year. This contest is open to all ages from kindergarten to grade 12. It is their chance to show or tell what Remembrance Day means to them. Information on this can be obtained from their schools or the Branch. The Branch itself will be closed on the 11th, as it would be extremely difficult to keep within the COVID-19 restrictions. The branch will be placing a few wreaths at the cenotaph with a few invited officials. Please remember our veterans, past and present, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country by observing the 2 minutes of silence at 11am, wherever you may be. If it were not for them, we would not be enjoying the freedoms we have today. Stay Safe and Remember.

Commonwealth war graves commission invites Canadians to honour their war dead in digital remembrance campaign Encouraging Canadians to remember from home this year, CWGC is launching #ShineOn, a digital remembrance campaign. Do your part in honouring Canada’s fallen by participating in this powerful moment. Ottawa (November 4, 2020) – This year, Remembrance Day will take a on a different form for the first time since Canadians observed it on November 11th, 1931. On the 75th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is committed to honouring fallen Canadians despite restrictions on traditional Remembrance Day gatherings due to COVID-19. Remembrance Day is going to be different this year. There won’t be mass gatherings at the Cenotaph and war memorials, and many of us won’t be at our usual places of work to hold a communal two minutes silence. That’s why we are launching #ShineOn- an inclusive, accessible, digital Remembrance event. We need the help of Canadians across the country to cast the net far and wide, and take a few selfless minutes to remember those who fought so we can live today. To heighten awareness & increase involvement this Remembrance Day, Canadians can take to social media using the hashtag #ShineOn to share memories about fallen family members or friends. There is also a virtual experience on our website to allow people to name stars after commonwealth war dead. “This Remembrance Day, we honour those who made the greatest sacrifice to secure a peaceful future for generations of Canadians,” said David Loveridge, CWGC’s Director for the Canada and the Americas Area. “In a year in which many of our Remembrance traditions sadly cannot take place as usual, we hope that Canadians come together virtually to pay tribute to Canada’s fallen.” On Remembrance Day, CWGC encourages Canadians to take a moment at 7:00pm (EST) and look up to the stars to remember the fallen. CWGC will be shining searchlights into the sky at key locations during this special moment, and we hope everyone will take part.

National Aboriginal Veterans’ Day was Sunday, 8 November ...continued from page 7 Code Talkers While Indigenous soldiers again served as snipers and scouts, as they had during the First World War, they also took on interesting new roles during this conflict. One unique example was being a “code talker.” Men like Charles Checker Tompkins of Alberta translated sensitive radio messages into Cree so they could not be understood if they were intercepted by the enemy. Another Cree-speaking “code talker” would then translate the received messages back into English so they could be understood by the intended recipients. Decorations for bravery Indigenous service members would receive numerous decorations for bravery during the war. Willard Bolduc, an Ojibwa airman from Ontario, earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for his brave

actions as an air gunner during bombing raids over occupied Europe. Huron Brant, a Mohawk from Ontario, earned the Military Medal for his courage while fighting in Sicily. Indigenous people also contributed to the war effort on the home front. They donated large amounts of money, clothing and food to worthy causes and also granted the use of portions of their reserve lands to allow for the construction of new airports, rifle ranges and defence installations. The special efforts of First Nations communities in Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia were also recognized with the awarding of the British Empire Medal to acknowledge their great contributions. Remembrance Day on November 11 Due to the current situation regarding COVID 19, 4 Wing members are strongly encouraged to take time to watch a ceremony on TV or online and pay tribute to our fallen men and women from home this year. Beginning at 10:45 a.m. EST, Canada’s major broadcasters will be airing the National Remembrance Day ceremony from Ottawa and it will also be available to watch on Facebook Live from the Royal Canadian Legion’s Facebook page. CTV News Calgary will also be covering the Hangar Flight Museum’s ceremony from 10:57 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. MST. At 11:00 a.m., please take two minutes for silent reflection and remember those who came before us, providing the freedom we enjoy today, and whose footsteps we follow to keep the peace for our fellow Canadians. For the Fallen, we owe them our gratitude for their courage and we must continue to respect the memory of their sacrifice. We will remember them.
