Canadian Forces Snowbirds launch cross-Canada tour NATIONAL DEFENCE April 29, 2020 – Moose Jaw, SK – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces The Canadian Forces Snowbirds will cross the country to salute Canadians doing their part to fight the spread of COVID-19.

This unique mission is being aptly dubbed Operation INSPIRATION. “The iconic Snowbirds have a special place in the hearts of many Canadians. We hope that their presence over Canadian cities and towns to acknowledges the hard work being done by Canadians in our grocery stores, our pharmacies,” said The Honourable Harjit S. The team’s signature nine-jet formation, with trailing white smoke, will fly over cities across the country starting in Nova Scotia last weekend and working west throughout the week. The team will release anticipated locations, routes, and times on their social media platforms each day.

Flyovers will occur at an elevation no lower than 500 feet above all obstacles.

“We’ve been asked to do what we do best… inspire Canadians. Through Operation INSPIRATION, we not only want to salute the front-line health care workers, first responders, and essential workers, but also all Canadians doing their part to stop the spread of COVID-19.

We want Canadians to know we’re in this with you,”said Lieutenant-Colonel Mike French, Commanding Officer, Canadian Forces Snowbirds The team will be practicing recommended

hand-washing and wearing recommended personal protective equipment while travelling. Team members will also be minimizing any interactions with people outside of the team.

We encourage Canadians to observe the flyovers from the safety of their home and refrain from travelling to see the flyovers. Please maintain physical distancing practices that are keeping us all safe.

• The Canadian Forces Snowbirds paused operations on March 20, 2020 to preserve the team’s health. The members have been at home physically distancing since that time.

• The team will spend two days at their home base of 15 Wing Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan flying refresher and proficiency training missions, which is standard Royal Canadian Air Force practice after an extended pause from flying operations, before starting their cross-Canada tour.

song that was inspiring troops during the Second World War is resurfacing in England as the battle cry for many raging against the feared COVID-19.

We‘ll Meet Again was sung

by Second World War songstress Dame Vera Lynn. It offered hope and inspiration to British and allied troops in 1940. The song was written in 1939 and made famous by Lynn, who at the time in England was a favourite, and was meant to cheer troops as they went off to war in Europe and left sweethearts behind.

It’s a powerful ballad which the Queen turned to in her address to the Commonwealth last month when she talked about the pandemic.

Our link to the monarchy at 4 Wing is clear. You see her photo prominently throughout 4 Wing. Let’s not forget the Royal in Royal Canadian Air Force. The Royal was added in 1924 when King George V gave royal sanction to the Canadian Air Force.

COVID-19 is in many ways similar to a wartime threat. To overcome the threat requires sacrifice, determination and encouragement.

The Queen said in her address last month: “I am speaking to you at what I know is an increasingly challenging time. A time of disruption in the life of our country: a disruption that has brought grief to some, financial difficulties to many and enormous changes to the daily lives of us all.”

We don’t hear from the Queen often, except for the regular Christmas message, her speeches are a rarity. She spoke to the commonwealth at the end of the Second World War and after the death of Diana. You don’t have to be a monarchist to feel compelled to listen to what she says. Her words, based on a long life of experience, are worthy of attention.

The Queen last month admitted self-isolation can be difficult, but thanked all those staying at home and sparing others from the grief felt by many families.

She paid tribute to health care staff and their contribution.

She said she had heard “heart warming” stories from throughout the Commonwealth that went beyond delivering food and medicines to those who needed them.

The Queen said the current situation reminded her of her first broadcast in 1940. That’s when she spoke to children who had been evacuated from their homes to be safe from bombing.

“Today, once again, many will feel a painful sense of separation from their loved ones.

But now, as then, we know, deep down, that it is the right thing to do,” she said.

She concluded by recalling the words of the song: We’ll Meet Again.

This Friday, May 8, the Queen will lead celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands and VE (Victory in Europe) Day. Many planned events have been canceled due to the pandemic, such as street parties. The Queen will address the Commonwealth, as did King George VI, on the day when the war in Europe ended.

And celebrations Friday are to include a national public singing of We’ll Meet Again.

Cold Lake develops COVID-19 response SUBMITTED In keeping with the Government of Alberta’s direction surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Cold Lake is taking steps for the orderly cancellation of summer events.

“Of course we all want life to get back to normal, but with the government signaling a lengthy course of physical distancing and limitations on gatherings, we are taking action to ensure that summer events are cancelled,” Mayor Craig Copeland said. “The cancellation of summer events across the province will, of course, be devastating for the economy but to continue to plan for these events when their continuation is unlikely would only serve to put public dollars at risk.”

In response to the cancellation of the 2020 Cold Lake Air Show, the City of Cold Lake is taking steps for the orderly cancellation of the associated Full Throttle Festival, as well as other events such as Canada Day and Aqua Days.

Also, the City will be not be accepting any bookings for sports fields throughout the community, including the soccer/rugby pitches and baseball/softball fields. The soccer and rugby pitches are considered open spaces for the public to use with proper social distancing measures in accordance to public health rules, but the City will not be booking them for any events, games, or leagues. Other spaces have been closed to the public, such as the Thomas Varughese Artificial Turf Field, ball diamonds, playgrounds structures, outdoor courts, outdoor rinks, skate park, and splash park.

“We continue to carefully follow the leadership provided by the Government of Alberta through AHS, and to support them in every way possible,” Copeland said. “We will balance a state of preparedness to safely

reopen while taking all steps necessary to implement the health and safety precautions the province puts into place.”

Also, Cold Lake Transit is reducing its hours of operation in response to COVID-19.

“Ridership has seen an impact with the closures of schools and many businesses in the city,” said Copeland. “A lot of people are staying home right now, which is what the Province of Alberta is asking of all communities – to stay home as much as possible.

Unfortunately, this continues to have a significant effect on our local economy as well.”

Council voted to reduce the hours of operation by three hours each day during the week, and remove the Saturday schedule entirely. The new hours would be Monday to Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to the service ending at 6:00 p.m.

Though Cold Lake Transit is still seeing an average of 122 riders per day, this is a decrease from the average 549 riders per day the bus system would normally be seeing this time of year.

The City will continue to monitor the utilization of its programs and services during these hard times.

Updated bus schedules will be available online at www.coldlake.com and through the TransLoc Rider App. Meanwhile, the city said you should expect to see fewer garage sales.

The Province of Alberta is not prohibiting garage sales, and is leaving the decision to each municipality.

“We have been following the recommendations put forth by the Government of Alberta when it comes to COVID-19 and the restrictions that come with it,” said Copeland. “We are not going to put a restriction in place at this time, but this could change as the situation with the virus develops.”

Cold Lake is not recommending that residents hold or attend any garage sales at this time, and to consider alternative methods to exchange goods. Should a resident feel the need to hold a sale, both sellers and buyers are reminded to obey Public Health Orders, which currently includes: - No gatherings over 15 people - Maintain a physical distance of two metres In addition, it is recommended that residents consider e-transfers instead of handling cash, and provide hand sanitizer for both sellers and buyers.

Alternative methods of sale are being encouraged, such as online market places and using e-transfers and porch pick-up methods to minimize contact with other residents. It is recommended that any items brought into your home are sanitized thoroughly.

As things continue to evolve with COVID-19, the decision on garage sales may change, either by the province, or at the municipal level.

The annual City-Wide Sale, usually held near the end of August, and typically very successful, is postponed this year, as it can bring thousands of people into the community.

4 Wing RV Compound Frequently Asked Questions PERSONNEL SUPPORT PROGRAMS Below are some of the common questions that 4 Wing RV Compound users have while utilizing the RV Compound service.

Signing up: Who can get a secure a site at the 4 Wing RV Storage Compound?

Regular members (Currently serving Military members, Reserve Force, and Foreign Fighters), Ordinary members (DND employees, NPF, PSP, Staff of MFRCS’, DCC, RCMP, and Honorary Colonels), and Veterans.

What do I need to provide PSP to obtain a site at the RV Storage Compound?

Name, address, phone number(s), service number, current valid insurance certificate, vehicle registration, name and number of an emergency contact, and the size of your vehicle.

What size vehicle can I store in the Compound?

North Compound is for trailers 26 feet and under.

South Compound is anything over 26 feet.

What type of vehicle am I permitted to store at the 4 Wing RV Compound?

Trailers, RVs, boats, and ATVs can be stored at the RV Compound.

All vehicles must be in good working condition.

I have more than one vehicle. Am I able to secure more than one site?

If space permits, yes. All members eligible to obtain 2 sites. For Regular and Ordinary members, the first 2 sites are free. Any additional site rentals will be subject to a fee.

Fees: Is there a cost for the site?

There is no rental fee for Regular and Ordinary members.

Rental fees apply to Veterans and members requiring additional sites. They are as follows: North Compound: $31.50/site per year South Elongated Compound: $52.50/site per year All members are required to pay a $50 security deposit per site.

When is the security deposit refunded?

Once you submit a request to withdraw your site (can be submitted online here). We will complete a site check to ensure it is fully cleared. A refund request is then processed.

A refund cheque will be mailed to you. This can take anywhere from 6-8 weeks. Therefore, we request that you provide us with your new mailing address (if you are leaving Cold Lake).

Meditation 101

M

editation is a process of training your mind to focus and redirect your thoughts. You can use it to increase awareness of yourself and your surroundings. There are many benefits of meditation.

Meditation has been often used to reduce stress and develop concentration. Studies have shown that meditation is a powerful and natural treatment for people who suffer from depression and anxiety. It helps to improve your health by strengthening your immune system, improving your heart rate, reducing your blood pressure, and lowering cholesterol levels. As your body receives a message to relax it also removes tension and tightness, not only from your muscles but also from your mind.

There are many kinds of meditation techniques, for example: mindfulness meditation, body scan relaxation, Christian or Zen meditation, transcendental meditation, etc.

The one perhaps I am the most familiar with is a Christian meditation which is the process of intentionally focusing on specific thoughts such as a bible passage and reflecting on their meaning in the

context of the love of God. Christian meditation aims to heighten the personal relationship based on the love of God. It brings us into a communion with God, our neighbours and ourselves.

Although I tried different forms of meditation, I am by no means an expert in any meditation technique.

You can find many meditation and relaxation videos online. Allow me to share with you some simple steps of how you can teach yourself to meditate. You can use guided audio meditation, relaxation and meditation music or do it in complete silence.

- Find a quiet place where nobody will disturb you; - Sit or lie comfortably. You can use a chair, an exercise mat or a cushion; - Set up time you want to meditate. You can start with 15-30 mins (do not be surprised if you fall asleep); - Close your eyes. Avoid any visual stimulation; - Begin by taking deep, controlled in-breaths and deep controlled out-breaths; - Focus your attention on the breath and on how

the body moves with each inhalation and exhalation; - Pick a simple word or a phrase such as “love”, “Jesus” or imagine a symbol such as a cross which is particularly comforting to you; - Repeat the word, phrase or visualize the image that you have chosen over and over with every outbreath. The monotony will calm you down.

Mindfulness meditation creates a relaxation response throughout your body – opposite of the arousal response. During mindfulness, observe your thoughts without either suppressing them or judging them. Act like a detached observer of what is impacting your mind. For each thought, simply observe its contents and how it makes you feel, that’s all.

The result? Over time, you will be more aware of how you are now reacting to a particular stressor and have better insight regarding the stressors your mind is dealing with. You will also develop a new and better way of responding to such stressors in general and accepting them as a normal part of your life.

Remembering sacrifice for Netherlands WAR AMPS 75 Years Since the Liberation of the Netherlands

In May 2000, the late Cliff Chadderton (1919 – 2013) led a parade of fellow Canadian veterans through the streets of Apeldoorn, Netherlands, where they were met with cheering crowds and words of “thank you.”

This May marks 75 years since Canadians sacrificed life and limb to help liberate the Netherlands from Nazi occupation.

Chadderton lost part of his right leg while in command of a company of The Royal Winnipeg Rifles battling for the Scheldt Estuary in Belgium and Holland. In Faces of War (1998), a collection of veterans’ stories, he said, “I should have died right there. I stepped one foot into Holland and left it there.”

While recovering in the army field hospital, Chadderton had an epiphany that would define how he approached the rest of his life. “I don’t need my legs. My head was ok, so I could go out and challenge the world and find something to do that would be useful,” he said.

On returning to Canada, Chadderton and his fellow Second World War amputees were welcomed as members of The War Amps, an Association originally started by First World War amputee veterans to help each other adapt to their new reality. An active member, he held several positions within the Association until his appointment as Executive Secretary (later CEO) in War Amps 1965. He was also Chairman of the National Council Cliff Chadderton (1919-2013), former CEO of The War Amps and Chairman of the National of Veteran Associations (NCVA).

Bomb was built at General Motors’ Fisher Tank Arsenal in Flint, Michigan and belonged to the 27th Armoured Regiment (The Sherbrooke Fusiliers Regiment), which was composed of two units now known as Les Fusiliers de Sherbrooke and The Sherbrooke Hussars.

Bomb’s name was inspired by the stylized golden grenade on the Fusiliers’ cap badge.

The Regiment embarked for Britain on October 27, 1942. On June 6, DND archives 1944 it landed in Normandy, France as Tank named Bomb was rescued for a scrapyard and returned to Canada a unit of the 2nd Canadian Armoured after the war.

A few weeks later in Deventer, Netherlands, Lt White was injured when shrapnel struck his leg.

Lieutenant Ernest Mingo of Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia took command of Bomb and pressed on.

The regiments cleared German army units along Ijsselmeer and through northern Netherlands before pushing into Germany.

The war ends with the crew still aboard In the final days of the war, the crew fought off German attacks until finally, in the border town of Emden, Lt Mingo received a call over the tank’s radio: the war was over.

Bomb had fired 6,000 rounds in battle by VE Day and had survived two hits from enemy shells but never missed a day of fighting. Though it had suffered some damage through the action, all repairs were done by the crew aboard.

Bomb is one of only two Canadian tanks known to have seen action from D-Day to VE-Day and returned to Canada. The other one, the Holy Roller, has been on display in London, Ontario’s Victoria Park since 1956.

Try making your own positive sign SUBMITTED In recognition of Mental Health Week (May 4-10), Northern Lights Public Schools and the Successful Families, Successful Kids Project are pleased to announce our “Positive Signs for Mental Health” initiative.

Our goal is to spread positive messages of hope and encouragement throughout our community and show people that we care about them and are here to support them. We will need everyone’s help to do this and are hoping you will do what you can to support us.

Here’s how you can get involved: 1. Become a host location for one of our Positive Signs lawn signs.

Northern Lights Public Schools and the Successful Families, Successful Kids Project gave away 500 18X24 lawn signs with positive messages on them to display during Mental Health Week (May 4-10).

2. Get creative and make your own Positive Signs to display.

Make your own lawn sign or put one up in your window.

Find your sidewalk chalk and write positive messages on your sidewalks or driveways.

You could even use found or recycled materials to create something

3-D! 3. Encourage others to post their own Positive Signs.

We are challenging the entire community to display Positive Signs

during Mental Health Week. That includes asking local businesses and community organizations to post positive messages on their digital signs, sandwich boards, windows and displays. It also includes asking grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and anyone else you know to create a Positive Sign.

4. Share your signs on social media.

After you create or put up your sign, take a picture and post it on social media (or have your parents post it).

Tag us @nlpsab on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and use the hashtag #NLPSpositivesigns. This will help us share all of our Positive Signs with people who may not be able to see them outside or even people outside of our communities who may need some words of encouragement.

In addition to our Positive Signs for Mental Health initiative, we are continuing to add the resources available for parents and students in the Mental Health section of our website.

Sleep for your health LISA FISHER, HEALTH PROMOTION SPECIALIST The Health Promotion Department wants you to “Sleep for Your Health!” The May virtual campaign is focusing on sleep: what it is, why you should do it and how to make it a priority.

Sleep is one of the fundamental needs for optimal health, much like nutrition and physical activity.

The National Sleep Foundation’s recommendations state that adults between the ages of 18 to 64 should sleep seven to nine hours per night. Some adults may need six hours or less whereas others need more than nine hours of sleep per night for optimal functioning. Keep in mind, however, that these “short” and “long” sleepers are quite rare, in that they represent less than 10 per cent of the adult population. To understand what your individual sleep need is per night, you must acknowledge whether you are well rested both upon awakening and throughout the day. If you are not, you may be sleeping less than your body needs. If you are sleeping between

seven to nine hours per night and you are still feeling fatigued, you may wish to discuss this with your healthcare practitioner to rule out a sleep disorder.

As a fundamental need, we spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping. Even though research has shown the importance of sleep for our health, 1/3 of Canadians sleep fewer hours per night than the National Sleep Foundation recommendations. Furthermore, over half of Canadians state that they sleep less because they want to accomplish more during the day. It appears that oftentimes we put sleep on the back burner and believe that being tired the next day is a small price to pay for more productivity in the present.

Unfortunately, when we continue to think this way and cut back on our sleep, we are accumulating a sleep debt. When the sleep debt becomes too large, we are unable to fully pay it back, resulting in increased and constant fatigue.

Youth Reporter Competition: Time to vote for your favourite story CAF NEWSPAPERS Last fall, Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Newspapers* invited youths from military families between 13 and 18 to take part in this new and exciting Youth Reporter Competition for a chance to win a grand prize package and scholarship valued at $2,500.

Youths were asked to submit a story idea about something important to their life or the community around them. Over 50 applications were received from CAF youths from all over the country and around the world. A selection committee comprised of CAF Newspaper Editors met in

late January to go through all the applications received and select the five most unique and powerful stories with the best editorial merit.

The six finalists were informed in early February and were given a few weeks to deliver their unique stories, all of which are featured in a special PLAY e-zine edition published on CAFconnection. ca as well as in Canadian Forces Newspapers across the country.

“What a great opportunity for the youth of our military community to share their voices,” says Colonel Telah Morrison, Director, Military Family Services.

“I thank CAF Newspapers for creating this program and giving

youth the means by which to express themselves.”

CWO Peter Stauffer Memorial Scholarships MEDLEY CFB SOCIETY The CWO Peter Stauffer Memorial Scholarships were created by the Medley CFB Society in honour of Peter Stauffer, the Wing Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) and an active member of the Society from July 2000 until July 2004, who passed away due to cancer 19 September 2004. In Peter Stauffer’s name, the Society presents three $2500.00 scholarships each academic year.

In June 2005, the first two CWO Peter Stauffer Memorial Scholarships were presented by Mrs. Rae Stauffer in her late husband’s name. To date, the Medley CFB Society has presented twenty-eight scholarships to deserving students.

CWO Peter Stauffer was dedicated developing and strengthening the character of the military family and improving the Quality of Life for the community in general. He was well-known for his commitment and support to the entire Cold Lake community. He was a strong advocate of community participation throughout his tenure as WCWO at 4 Wing.

The application process for the Memorial Scholarships is open to all graduating high school students who are dependents of personnel currently serving at 4 Wing in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) whether in the Regular or Reserve Force or as a Department of National Defence (DND) or Non Public Funds (NPF) employees. The students must

be planning on pursuing full-time post-secondary studies at a recognized educational institution (academic or technical), must have maintained a consistent academic standing and have contributed to the community in a demonstrable manner. Students should note that a consistent academic standing does not indicate they must be on the “honour roll”. If you have maintained a consistent grade point average – whether at a “C” level or an “A” level – you meet that eligibility requirement. Peter Stauffer never insisted that personnel “be the best” – only that they DO THEIR BEST and try to better themselves.

The most important application requirement is the 500-word essay on either ‘Leadership’, ‘Quality of Life’ or ‘Community Spirit’. These were the qualities that defined Peter Stauffer and were the qualities he most encouraged others to develop. It is critical that applying students provide a clear and well thought out presentation of what their selected quality means to them and illustrate that quality’s influence in their own lives.

COVID Response Ops This week saw the CAF increase support to Long Term Care Facilities (LTCF) in Ontario and Quebec. The scope and scale of these operations will be reported on separately, but I wanted to convey to you some key aspects of this challenging and atypical mission.

First, I am incredibly humbled by, and proud of, all our people, medical and non-medical, for their positive and professional response. The CAF has been tasked with helping Long Term Care staff save lives. The situation in many of the facilities was and remains dire, and we can and will help, to the best of our ability, until we are relieved of the task. The basic concept is to group small military medical teams with non-medical teams of approximately platoon size to cover off a range of jobs needing to be done in the facilities where we are needed. Medical staff perform medical duties and patient/ resident care, while support troops help with facility support tasks and, under supervision, some patient/resident support functions. Maximum attention will be paid to force protection and the protection of residents. Medical and support staff will wear and use medical grade personal protective equipment

(PPE), and will train on its use in predeployment. Procedures (think TTPs) will be taught to everyone based on the recce and the unique circumstances at each facility. Rations and quarters and other sustainment activities will be put in place to ensure our safety, the safety of our families and self-sufficiency of our deployed teams.

This is a unique task, and one that will be uncomfortable for many, but our professionalism and sense of duty prevails. The defence of Canada and Canadians comes in many forms, and in this case, has come in a form we are not routinely prepared for, but are dealing with very well. The response of our Health Services and those tasked to support has been superb. For those assigned to LTCF duties I want you to know that I have directed my staff to examine the assignment of Hazard Pay to set the level of allowance that this task deserves.
