Exercise MAPLE STRIKE taking place at 4 Wing Cold Lake MAY 3, 2021 – COLD LAKE, AB – NATIONAL DEFENCE / CANADIAN ARMED FORCES 4 Wing Cold Lake is hosting Canadian Army Joint Terminal Attack Controllers participating in Exercise MAPLE STRIKE until May 7, 2021. The public is advised that teams of 5-10 soldiers dressed in tactical combat gear may be seen in the Cold Lake, Ardmore, and Bonnyville areas from May 3 to 7. The soldiers will not be armed and will not have any ammunition. The soldiers will be communicating with 4 Wing aircraft flying over the area conducting valuable Close Air Support training. Further training will take place within Canadian Forces Base Cold Lake and the Cold Lake Air Weapons range to include night flying operations involving 4 Wing CF-18 aircraft. Residents of Cold Lake and the surrounding area can expect to see and hear aircraft during this time. Military personnel participating in this exercise will be adhering to strict COVID-19 mitigation protocols to ensure the health and safety of the community. Members of the public are asked not to interact with the soldiers in respect of COVID-19 protocols and not to interfere with the training scenarios. 4 Wing is always mindful of the Lakeland community and this type of training is not intended to disrupt your valuable peace and quiet. This exercise is important to aid in preparing soldiers for combat operations in dynamic built up areas overseas. The ability to conduct night missions is vital to 4 Wing and the Joint Terminal Attack Controller’s operational capabilities.
