4 Wing Health Care Centre is in operation although the official opening in March was postponed due to the pandemic.

CLIFF KENYON The untimely arrival of the pandemic couldn’t have been worse to cause trouble for the opening of the new 4 Wing Health Care Centre.

But civilian staff and Canadian Armed Forces members at the new centre have proven they can overcome challenges presented by an unexpected foe.

“Fortunately, we all work pretty well together,” said Capt. April Murphy, a former Medical Technician and now a Health Care Administrator at the centre.

Why poor sleep can be a nightmare LISA FISHER, HEALTH PROMOTION SPECIALIST Most adults require 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night. Sleep has been established as a fundamental human need which is integral to our health. Despite this, over 1/3 of Canadians have been found to sleep less hours per night than recommended. When it comes to military personnel, an objective analysis found that men, in particular, do not achieve minimal sleep recommendations. This could be a result of a variety of factors, including the belief held by military personnel that their ability to function optimally is not affected by insufficient sleep.

Sleep plays a huge part in our daytime functioning and overall health. When we sleep, our energy is restored and conserved so when we wake up, we can function optimally. Our memories and experiences are also sorted and stored by our brain while we sleep. This process allows us to remember things that we need to. Most of our bodily functions are also impacted by sleep, including our heart and lung functions, endocrine system, and metabolism.

When we don’t get enough quantity or quality sleep, our bodily functions are impacted and so, therefore, is our overall health.

If you are depriving yourself of sleep, there are likely warning signs that are going off. You may or may not be paying attention to these signs. If you are not paying attention, then it is important to tune in.

How the lack of sleep can impact us over the course of a few days may seem inconsequential; however, when it becomes a chronic issue our health risks

increase. Some of the most common signs that you are not getting enough sleep include yawning and fatigue. You may experience more headaches than normal and have a strong desire to go to sleep. People may tell you that you “look tired”; this is a result of your hair and skin cell regeneration decreasing.

Maybe you are cranky, more irritable, or emotional, or you experience a lack of patience when you have not slept enough. Even if you do not notice these signs, other people around you probably do.

Your ability to focus, be attentive and remember is also compromised. Sleep loss can lead to weight gain through a combination of factors including hormonal deregulation and glucose deregulation, leading us to be hungrier, eat more and crave unhealthy food such as those high in sugar and fat. There is also the likelihood that your immune system can be compromised, increasing your risk of getting sick and possibly remaining sick for longer.

Those were the acute health effects. What about when you are not sleeping well for a while? Chronic sleep deprivation can exacerbate these health effects, as well as already existing health conditions. Headaches and fatigue can become severe. That strong urge to sleep may be replaced with “sleep attacks” where you uncontrollably fall asleep. “Looking tired” is not the only issue you have to worry about when your skin and hair cells fail to regenerate; you may experience premature aging of your skin, hair, and reproductive system. For men, this means lower sperm count.

The seemingly benign emotional responses toward situations or others may lead to anxiety, depression and/or burnout. The inability to pay attention and to store memories effectively may lead to attention deficit and/or memory loss, leading to negative occupational

and academic outcomes. With glucose deregulation, higher consumption of unhealthy foods, and higher blood pressure, your risk of diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease increases. Reduced immune system functioning over time will also increase your risk for certain types of cancer, specifically colorectal and breast cancers.

Whether you are sleep deprived for a few days or for much longer, you increase your risk of injury or accident when operating a motor vehicle, machinery, or tools. This can lead to severe issues in the safetysensitive environment of the military. Overall, lack of sleep increases mortality.

When you are thinking about cutting back on sleep to finish your Netflix show, play a few more video games, get to the end of your book, or get some additional work done, remember the impact that this decision could have. It is not just about feeling a little tired the next day; the impacts can be severe and longlasting.

Cold Lake Mayor confident in future SUBMITTED Despite a tough economy and ongoing closures in both the public and private sectors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Cold Lake is seeing signs of confidence in its future.

“These are very challenging times, and we’ve heard many stories of hardship, both because of the current challenges in the energy sector and because of the closures associated with restrictions due to COVID-19,” Mayor Craig Copeland said. “But there is light at the end of the tunnel and strong signs that investors see a bright future for our community.”

Mayor Copeland pointed to a variety of development and business activity both before and after the start of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including the construction and opening of Starbucks and Edo, the ongoing and significant remodeling that M&M Food Market is undertaking for its planned move, and the makeover of a commercial property that Renu Hair Salon and Day Spa has moved into next to the ESSO station in Cold Lake South.

“It is also our understanding that an investor has recently purchased the former site of the GM dealership in downtown Cold Lake with the intention of an interesting and exciting

development for downtown, while walls are currently going up at a new commercial location for the Cold Lake Brewing and Distillery Co. in Cold Lake North, and yet another new franchise for Cold Lake – Burger King – has just opened its drive thru operations in line with the COVID restrictions,” Copeland said. “It’s clear that while very real and significant challenges continue to face our businesses, there is a strong measure of confidence in what our community has to offer now and into the future.”

Copeland noted that, over the past several years, the community has seen significant private investment in commercial and retail operations, private medical facilities, as well as government support for a potential expansion at Portage College, and an expansion at the Cold Lake Provincial Park. Also of note is the federal government’s looming Future Fighter Program, which will see expansion and rehabilitation of facilities at 4 Wing Cold Lake.

“This is significant activity for a community of under 15,000, especially given the challenges the oil patch and the global economy are facing,” Copeland said. “It shows that we are a wellrounded community with resilient, committed businesses and valued partners in the business, education,

tourism, health, and not-for-profit sectors. We have strong ties to the oil patch, the aerospace sector, a budding tourism industry, and a wealth of innovative entrepreneurs.

Most importantly, we have partners who share our vision for a strong, vibrant community.”

In addition to measures taken locally, the federal and provincial governments have announced support for small and large businesses and for people whose employment has been affected by the pandemic. And the Cold Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce has worked to ensure its membership and the wider business community have access to the information they need.

“We appreciate the help that the province and federal government has offered to Canadians and their businesses,” Copeland said. “At the same time, we fear that the ongoing response to the pandemic will mean that not all businesses will be able to survive the shutdown. Our hearts go out to those who have had their employment or their business – often their life’s passion and work – negatively impacted by the current situation. I know that our community will continue to support its local businesses as best it can and, when this has passed, we will continue to work together to build Cold Lake’s bright future.”

Playgrounds opening as virus fears ease CLIFF KENYON Facilities at 4 Wing Cold Lake are beginning to be open to the public after the closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

4 Wing playgrounds, fitness structures, the Mackenzie Dog Park, as well as the outdoor fitness park and skateboard park at the Col J.J. Parr Sports Centre are opening. Other 4 Wing outdoor facilities are not opening at this time.

Appropriate signage will be in place at all open facilities to reflect the changes.

The Government of Alberta has imposed a limit of 50 people on outdoor gatherings and is

requiring physical distancing such that people who are not from the same household should keep two metres apart. Be advised that these outdoor facilities are not inspected or disinfected so please use caution.

In the City of Cold Lake, outdoor parks and playgrounds, including the skatepark, are also open under the Government of Alberta guidelines.

For the time being in Cold Lake, other outdoor recreational facilities will remain closed as the city works with health officials to understand the restrictions that are in place and what will be required to open these facilities safely once allowed to do so.

You get what you give

A

good friend of mine reached out to me, who I haven’t heard from in a few years. She, like many of us, has been struggling with social distance. In her case though the problem dates back a bit longer than our present pandemic reality.

A lot of us want to build relationships with people.

We know inside ourselves that we need people in our lives – friends, supporters, encouragers, people who care about us. But somewhere along the way some have forgotten that it takes more than wishes and dreams to make relationships a reality.

That feeling of disconnection, of isolation is not pleasant. I have had more than my share of seasons when I have felt that way. In the military context, we live in a funny world where intense and loyal relationships can often come into existence very quickly while on BMQ or on deployment in an intense

environment. But then we return home, and get posted, and suddenly we are surrounded by all new people, already in relationships with each other, and sometimes it feels like they don’t have room for us.

What do you do then?

When I feel disconnected like this more often than not it isn’t the other people’s fault. It isn’t them who needs to be different or be more welcoming or be nicer... It’s me. I am feeling tired or uncomfortable and I don’t want to put energy into others – I want them to put energy into me. But the problem with that is most people don’t just give energy to strangers. They give energy to those who they are connected to.

We need to remember this: You get what you give. When you love others, when you reach out to others and care for them, there is a blessing that comes. Even if others you reach out to don’t love you

back in the way you might like, your heart is filled because there is something special in living for others… living selflessly. Religions explain it by suggesting we are syncing our actions with the desires of the divine. Or maybe it is about aligning ourselves with our design – whether evolutionary or creative design is irrelevant. The fact is we are made to care for one another.

We all want someone else to go first. It takes bravery to go first. There is risk involved. There is the possibility of rejection. But if I have learned one thing from my life so far, gaining even one good friend is worth a hundred acquaintances who have not returned your care. Take the risk. Reach out. Give first, and you will get what you are looking for. It’s coming.
