t’s May in Cold Lake. We can tell by the hint of sprouting grass and greenery that we can see peering through that fresh dusting of snow.

Visit us at www.CAFconnection.ca or www.facebook.com/ 4WINGCONNECTION/
We have had a busy month of keeping up with our training and operational demands while supporting a long list of exercises and tasks. Your flexibility and professionalism continue to enable the many successes enjoyed by 4 Wing, we recognize your commitment and are very grateful for everything each of you do every day. COVID-19 is still a thing and we have seen rates again accelerate in the greater community, but our work places remain safe thanks to you and your strict adherence to our established preventative health measures. Our vaccination roll out on the Wing is well underway and many of us are waiting for the second dose. Likewise, vaccinations are continuing to be administered throughout the province and we will continue to examine the hot spots and make corresponding amendments to the travel restrictions. We are all hoping to get in front of this pandemic soon. Many of you are feeling the added pressure due to COVID-19 as APS approaches. As different provinces take different approaches regarding visitors, some of us are unable to conduct HHTs at this time. Shopping for a new home, finding schools, daycares, and doctors for our families is
stressful enough, having to put it on hold in some cases is something we realize is very concerning and adds stress to an already challenging time. We ask that your communication on any challenges encountered is frequent with your supervisors and chain of command, they are your support to help find the best solutions for you and your family. This month, two very important events were commemorated; recognition of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia on May 17 and Indigenous Awareness Week, May 25-28. It is important that we reflect upon occasions such as these and remember that inclusivity and the diversity of Canada wasn’t always celebrated. It is important that we all work together to make our institution stronger and better by leveraging the strengths of all people. Summer is right around the corner, the weather has greatly improved and the gloriously long evenings have begun. Find the time to take advantage of the season the best you can, recharge, refresh, and continue to do the excellent work that 4 Wing is famous for, the successes are all yours!

Commit to Quit – World No Tobacco Day LISA FISHER, HEALTH PROMOTION SPECIALIST Every year, the World Health Organization (WHO) hosts an awareness day to inform the public of the harmful effects of tobacco use, as well as how tobacco companies target their consumers, and how people can fight back for their health. It’s time for #FeatureFriday! Health Promotion’s featured member: Lt Matzner is an AERE Officer and currently the Officer Commanding of the Transition Centre in Cold Lake. She has been posted to Cold Lake since 2005. “At home, we love to spend most of our time outside, walking the dogs through the woods as family, eating as healthy as we can and taking advantage of our basement gym. At work, we like to try to have walking meetings over the lunch break, working through tough situations as a team, challenging each other to step competitions, and scheduling resiliency days to decompress. I have always loved sports (i.e. volleyball, squash, slow pitch, canoeing and kayaking) and find yoga and meditation to be great ways to calm the mind. Being outside is wonderful for that pandemic fatigue we are all feeling. I’m not perfect and I have to really work to stay on track. There are times, like many people, where I have to force myself to get up and get active. We try to eat as healthy as possible and plant some fresh options at home - half of what we plant normally doesn’t work out, so it’s a work in progress! The biggest thing is to keep moving, keep trying and keep getting up when you fall; there are people watching you to be the example.” Would you like to be featured in the series? It’s all about love...

t is hard to remember the important things in life. Our lives are often filled with so many activities, distractions and attractions that we sometimes forget what it is all about. Well, what is it all about? Are we just living from moment to moment, being pushed from one thing to another? It’s sad to hear people talk about their lives as nothing but a string of activities. There doesn’t seem to be any real content in their lives. It’s just one thing after another. So, what is it all about? I think we all know the answer to that question. It’s all about love. Loving one another - it is something that all of the religions, beliefs, philosophical systems and plain common sense teach us. Someone once said: “Man cannot live without love. He remains a being that is incomprehensible to himself, his life is senseless, if love is not revealed to him, if he

does not encounter love, if he does not experience it and make it his own, if he does not participate intimately in it.” Our lives are filled with so much uncertainty, and at times we may feel insignificant. Often, we just don’t understand why things are the way they are. We don’t understand why terrible things happen to people. We don’t understand sickness and suffering and death. We don’t understand our own emotional lives, our motivations and behaviors. At times we just stare life in the face and say, “I don’t know what all this means.” However, when we are in the midst of loving and caring for others, life begins to make sense on a deeper level. We may not have a rational understanding of life, but we become deeply engaged in a way that goes beyond words. Our intellectual understanding is not increased, but our intuitive self says, “This is right. This makes sense. This is meaningful.” Our love brings us
into a different place in life, a place where no amount of reasoning can ever bring us. Ask any woman, whose husband is suffering from extreme dementia, why she loves him so much even though at times he hardly recognizes her. Will this woman give you an intellectual answer based on strong reasoning? Hardly! She loves because she knows in a profound way that this is what she has been called to do. This is what makes sense to her. We need to be immensely grateful for such a wonderful gift – love. Despite our differences – cultures, religions or race – there are more things that bring us together than separate us as human beings. Love is one of them. Despite where each of us comes from and who we are love is the common human experience that unites us all.
