4 Wing welcomes new CWO

CLIFF KENYON 4 Wing’s Remi Nault is on his way to a new position in Ottawa and a new rank as major this week after an official change of command on Friday, June 26.

Nault has been 4 Wing CWO for three years. New CWO at 4 Wing is Lee Darling, who took over the post on Friday as Nault departed following the official ceremony.

CWO Darling is originally from Port au Port, NL. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1989 and embarked in a career as an Aerospace Telecommunications and Information Systems Technician. He has performed Avr Avery Philpott maintenance and repair to a variety of Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) Remi Nault places the transmitters and antenna systems.

After postings in St. John’s and participating in 1997 in the Nijmegen marches in the Netherlands, he was posted in 2005 to Kingston, Ont., where he was an instructor in communications system maintenance. In 2006, he was promoted to Sgt and became an electronics training supervisor prior to becoming the Crypto Training supervisor and finally the acting Troop Warrant Officer.

Promoted in 2010, he remained in Kingston and was posted to a dynamic unit consisting of a split of military personnel and public servants.

Promoted to MWO in 2013 and posted to 42 Radar Squadron in Cold Lake as the Squadron Warrant Officer, MWO Darling enjoyed the challenges of working outside his branch in a deployable, high tempo Tactical Control Radar unit.

During this

time he completed year long French training and enjoyed deployments to the high-arctic and the Middle-East.

Promoted to his current rank in 2017, CWO Darling was posted to Winnipeg where he worked as the Operations Support Squadron CWO at 17 Wing and was deployed to the

At the Museum

Middle-East as the Air Task Force-IMPACT CWO. Posted back to Cold Lake, CWO Darling has said he is is excited to again be a part of the 4 Wing family.

CWO Darling enjoys all types of outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, kayaking and motorcycling.

Cold Lake Air Force Museum has thousands of artifacts.

Many are on display and many have been archived and are in storage for future display and research purposes.

All items at the museum were donated.

Sometimes the donor knows little about the item, its purpose or history. Occasionally, museum staff are also stumped by an unusual or rare item. That’s where you come in. The Courier will regularly feature photos of some items and if you know anything about them please tell us. You can email editor@couriernews.ca or contact the museum.

Here’s an item we know more about. It’s from Marine Attack Squadron 311 of the United States Marine Corps. The squadron of AV-8B Harrier Jets, which are known as Tomcats, are based at Marine Corps Air Station at Yuma, Arizona.

Canada Day a time of thanks

P

erhaps Canada Day this year should be more like Thanksgiving.

I don’t mean we should indulge in the excesses of a huge family meal and a big celebration, but how about quiet reflection about what we are thankful for? We have lots to be thankful for this Canada Day and that is good reason to be waving the flag.

How about being thankful for leadership that has gotten us through a pandemic that in some parts of the world has had catastrophic results?

4 Wing Commander Col Dave Moar is celebrating a return to virtually normal base operations on July 6, nearly three months after an unprecedented and unexpected lockdown. You can be sure it’s not something he ever imagined happening.

We were told repeatedly by government and health officials that together, while being apart, we would beat this threat. It seems they were right.

Across 4 Wing Canadian Armed Forces members and the base support staff of civilians were sent home and told to stay away from each other. It can be a tough order to comply with for many. We were facing a threat and expected to remain calmly at home.

It’s not a surprise members

of the Canadian Armed Forces are people of action. They detect a problem or a threat and are ready and eager to come up with a plan of action. Not this time. The order was to stay at home. Be patient. Then be even more patient.

Wing leaders and the CAF drew up emergency plans, reviewed and adjusted them.

They had to figure out the best way to deal with a threat that was never really expected.

Then the battle was on.

Base leaders determined who were essential workers, the ones who must work to ensure the operational integrity of the base.

Because, regardless of the threat, 4 Wing is an operational air force fighter base and it was essential that operations be maintained, somehow.

Worldwide commitments related to defence and peace cannot be put on hold or a time out because of a pandemic.

Wing leaders examined every job and task and determined, at least for the short term, who were essential and non-essential workers.

Those in the essential category, those who do the day-to-day jobs that keep CF 18 Hornets in the air when they are needed, were divided into teams so the work wouldn’t be

left undone. Each team worked and completed necessary tasks in daily shifts without ever contacting members of complimentary teams doing the same work at other times of the day.

Some training was delayed, but vital tasks were completed.

An important part of a pandemic plan was that members of the Canadian Armed Forces across the country were ready and prepared if they were needed, even if they were at home waiting for the call that may never come.

But it did come. Again, unexpectedly, hundreds of CAF members were needed to help out in long term home care centres in Ontario and Quebec.

Members of the CAF did the unexpected, successfully completing a mission that was never imagined. But they were ready for the unexpected, for the never imagined, and being ready to help without delay or hesitation was part of the overall pandemic plan.

This Canada Day every Canadian can celebrate mission success, something you can always be thankful for. Even if your mission involved staying at home and being ready.

Cold Lake Transit to resume regular hours SUBMITTED Cold Lake Transit returned to its regular operating hours Monday while implementing COVID-19 safety protocols.

Precautions will include physical distancing of two metres and regular sanitization of high-touch areas.

“We have seen an impact on ridership due to COVID-19,” said Mayor Craig Copeland. “Though

this was expected, there are still a lot of people who rely on transit to get them to and from work and shopping areas, like grocery stores.”

The return to regular hours means Saturday service will resume from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, and the buses will be operating Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm, with no service on Sundays or statutory holidays except Canada Day and Remembrance Day. With physical distancing measures still in place,

the maximum number of riders is reduced, as only so many riders can safely be on the bus at any given time. Exceptions to the capacity are made for families travelling together, meaning the maximum number of riders will fluctuate between 12 and 15 people depending on how many are able to ride together.

Signage is placed throughout the bus to help riders determine appropriate distancing from other passengers.

Youth Centre Keep training for chosen sport opens at 4 Wing JERRY INGHAM, SPORTS COORDINATOR, 4 WING PERSONNEL SUPPORT PROGRAMS

CLIFF KENYON Re-opening of the 4 Wing Youth Centre is causing even more excitement than usual.

Due to the pandemic, so many people, including youths, have spent so much time at home and are looking forward to the opening on July 6 of the centre operated by Military Family Resource Centre Society.

Youth Program Coordinator Katherine Merrell has been busy finalizing programs that comply with social distancing requirements.

There are new hours of operation for the centre: Monday, 1-4 p.m. | ages 6-9, Tuesday | 4:30 – 7 p.m. | ages 6-9, Wednesday Closed, Thursday | 1- 4p. m. | ages 10-17, Friday | 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. | ages 10-17, Saturday | 1.pm. – 4 p.m. | ages 10-17, Sunday Closed.

Some of the activities will be Soccer, Line Dancing, Chalk Drawing and a Just Dance Competition.

The MFRCS Youth Centre is committed to safety and has re-designed programs to increase social distancing and COVID-19 awareness.

There will be a maximum of 10 youths per day and registration will be done only online through 4wingmfrcs.perfectmind.com.

On garbage, and picking it up

G

arbage! What thoughtless people leave garbage lying around? Going for a jog the other morning past the marina, there is garbage, piles of take-out refuse, tossed cynically out of car windows, and left for others to collect. We ought to hunt these people down (their finger prints are on the trash!), round them up into old-fashioned chain gangs and send them out to tidy the streets and roadsides. Who’s with me?

Maybe that’s a bit extreme. But my mind goes there, when I’m out for a jog, to questions like, “What motivates people? How could we change that behaviour?” To be quite honest, my first thought was “set stiff fines, and enforce them.” Have the peace force out hanging around for a few nights handing out tickets until the word gets around. But then I remembered the most effective anti-littering campaign (that I’m aware of), was in Texas, under the slogan “Don’t Mess with Texas.” And that got me thinking…

You see, the most obvious ways to motivate a group of people is either fear, or else pride. Handing out fines works through fear: it’s not worth the risk. Fear stops working though, if the risk goes away. If there is no one around, you can throw out your garbage without worrying. Or to take another example, the average

person drives carefully in part because they are afraid of wrecking their car. But I’ve known some with enough spare cash that they weren’t afraid to have a bit of fun. Sure, it stings to replace a Porsche, but totally worth it!

Pride is much more effective. Texans are proud of being Texans. So, if you tell them that proud Texans don’t let people mess up their State [Republic], they respond. This is actually how we make a lot of our decisions (subconsciously): rather than asking “what do I want,” we often ask, “what does a person like me want.” I stand proud because I’m a soldier, and soldiers stand proud. I pick up my garbage because I’m a responsible citizen, and responsible citizens pick up their garbage.

Pride also fails, though. If people are not proud to be Cold Lak…ians, then it won’t work to put up signs that say “Cold Lakians Don’t Litter.” They’ll just say, “Pffft, whatever. I want out of this town.” Similarly, pride can hold aviators and soldiers and sailors to a noble ethos of discipline, integrity, and self-sacrifice … right up until they stop being proud of the uniform.

That often happens because their expectations have been disappointed by reality; they have been let down by comrades or leaders; the band of brothers

and sisters left them hanging. This is today called a “moral injury.”

It is often assumed that religion works on these principles of fear and pride: you follow the rules because you are either afraid God will smite you, or because you get a sense of moral superiority. But in true Christianity, the mechanism of motivation is neither fear nor pride, but gratitude. The reason a Christian doesn’t litter is because we are thankful that Jesus picked up all our garbage and dealt with it himself. There is no more fear, because “nothing can separate us from His love.”

And there is no pride, because He saved us when we could not save ourselves. It’s like He did us a favour we could never repay, and He doesn’t expect us to, but we can spend the rest of our lives doing little things to show our appreciation and friendship. That is more effective motivation.

It may be that fear and pride will continue to be the easiest way to motivate the masses. But I hope that individually we will find gratitude to drive us. And the greater the gift, the greater the gratitude, so my prayer is that you receive such a great gift to keep you going your whole life long.

Summer fun begins CLIFF KENYON It’s summer and that means it’s time for outdoor fun.

BMO Financial is supporting efforts to get outside and be active as sponsor of the 4 Wing Summer Active Challenge 2020. For full details check out www. cafconnection.ca/Cold-Lake It’s an eight-week run/bike challenge with a competitive and a leisure/recreational track. The purpose is to enourage outdoor activity and build morale by walking, running or biking.

Participants will be given goals and challenges which also help them explore new places in and around Cold Lake.

It runs from July 5 to Aug. 23. Personnel Support Programs (PSP) Fitness and Sports Department is leading the challenge with the Health Promotion and Community Recreation departments.

Participants join events by following the 4 Wing Connection Facebook page, Each Saturday, routes will be posted for participants including a competitive running route of five to 15 kilometres, a competitive biking route of 30 to 55 kilometres and two to four leisure recreational routes from three to 20 kilometres.

Leisure/recreational participants will be encouraged to participate alone, with pets or family members from the same household and take photos to upload to social media.

Grand Prizes are $100 gift cards with weekly prized of $25 gift cards. In the leisure division grand prizes will be awarded by a random draw among those who participated once a week for eight weeks. For the competitive division, grand prizes will be awarded to fastest male and fastest female in three age categories for those who completed four runs and four rides for a total of eight segments.

Construction of new steps has been finished at 4 Wing Air Force association.

CLIFF KENYON 4 Wing Air Force Association and Cold Lake Royal Canadian Legion are slowly adjusting to a new normal as the pandemic threat passes.

Both groups, which closed their facilities in mid-March, are run by volunteers and have taken a slow and cautious approach to reopening.

The Wing Association will be open from July 7 for three hours daily from 11 a.m. for members.

No public or special events are

scheduled and none will be until provincial restrictions ease, said association president Tim Balazs.

The kitchen will remain closed for the time being.

“We are careful to follow the best protocols and provincial guidelines,” said Balazs.

He said the financial viability of the group was never threatened by the pandemic and the shutdown because the group paid off the mortgage on their building some time ago.

“We are able to survive the ordeal,” he said. “If we still had

a mortgage to pay the situation would be have been quite different.”

Meanwhile, the Cold Lake branch of the Royal Canadian Legion re-opened on June 22.

“Our staff and a handful of volunteers have been busy giving the clubhouse a facelift and getting us ready so we comply with regulations,” said president Todd Rorke in a Facebook post. “Come out and see the changes.”

He stressed the need for members visiting to follow health guidelines which have been changing regularly.

Another year of fun is upon us with the PSP Summer Program having started yesterday at the Col J.J. Parr Sports Centre. While this years’ program may look a little bit different, there will still be lots of great activities and even more laughs as the Recreation Team welcomes participants from ages 6 to 12 during the 9 week program. The program will have both indoor and outdoor activities including yoga, crafts, sports and so much more. The kids will enjoy time outside on the sports fields, playground and splash park and some time inside in the red arena and mini gym which have been outfitted to meet all of our requirements.
