This is what a Legacy looks like JOY SMITH In the June 30,1956 issue of the Courier Newspaper, telephone numbers in the ads had two digits and the new Eaton’s catalogue order office had just opened for business.

At Brady’s in Grand Centre, large tubes of toothpaste cost 29 cents, Campbell’s Tomato soup was two for 27 cents and Gold Seal canned Tuna would set you back 38 cents.

The Roundel Hotel on the shores of beautiful Cold Lake featured 45 modern rooms each with hot and cold running water. Pavement was something every PMQ housewife dreamed of.

Fast forward 65 years, the world is a very different place. The Courier News is a fully digital online newspaper, with the staff putting the paper together by internet and email.

June is Recreation Month PSP Connection can be defined as a relationship in which a person, thing, or idea is linked or associated with something else.

The importance of connection has been deeply felt this year with isolation taking a toll on our community, and the world as a whole. That said, it has also shone a light on new and creative ways to connect personally, with community, and beyond to feel worldwide connections. This is shown in various ways such as: through the use of technology providing ways to chat or even play games and watch movies with friends and family, through the push for supporting local businesses, and through the movements and causes that have brought likeminded people together to support issues that matter.

The importance of connection was the inspiration to this year’s June is Rec Month (JRM). Here at 4 Wing, we are celebrating connection through our 30 Ways to Connect contest. Each day

through the month of June, 4 Wing Recreation will post a new way to connect with friends, family, the community and beyond on our Instagram and Facebook stories. CWO Peter Stauffer Memorial Scholarships were created by the Medley CFB Society in honour of Peter Stauffer, the Wing Chief Warrant Officer and an active member of the Society from July 2000 until July 2004, who passed away due to cancer September 19, 2004.

In Peter Stauffer’s name, the Society presents three $2500.00 Scholarships each academic year.

Application process: Open to all graduating high school students who are dependents of personnel currently serving at 4 Wing in the CAF (Regular or Reserve) or as DND or NPF employees. The students must be planning on pursuing full-time post-secondary studies at a recognized educational institution (academic or technical), must have maintained a consistent academic standing and have contributed to the community in a demonstrable manner.

The most important application requirement is the 500-word essay on either ‘Leadership’, ‘Quality of Life’ or ‘Community Spirit’.

Students must provide a clear and well thought out presentation of what their selected quality means to them and illustrate that quality’s influence in their own lives.

Two prizes to be awarded are for $1000 and another for $500. Currently serving 4 Wing Cold Lake Regular Force military members who have achieved the rank of Sergeant or above, may nominate a candidate who holds the rank of Aviator, Corporal, or Master Corporal, or equivalencies and has demonstrated qualities and characteristics that sets the nominee apart from others.

The Courier looks to the past... ...continued from front page Fast forward 65 years, the world is a very different place. The Courier News is a fully digital online newspaper, with the staff putting the paper together by internet and email.

The universal cry of every newspaper editor around the world. The call for content is an art form for some editors.

The 1956 Editor of the The Courier claims the paper started in 1954 as a four-page mimeographed newsletter. Officially The Courier opened its doors in October of 1955. The paper shut down sometime in 1958/1959 but was reopened in 1967 as a Centennial project. In the early days, 1950s and 60s, some of the content was a tad inappropriate by today’s standards.

I’m not sure how they got away with it but that was a different time. In July of 1968, The Courier began laying out their own issues. Previously, content had been sent to a printer in St. Paul to be designed and

printed. In August 1975, a Compugraphic typesetter was purchased making The Courier the go to place for designing creative publications with several choices of fonts. In January 1992, The Courier became a weekly publication and after 24 years of producing the Courier with a staff of volunteers, paid staff began doing the job.

By 2002, when I joined the Courier team first as the reporter, later as the editor, the paper was still being physically laid out. Ads, articles, photographs, everything was produced on computers, printed, cut and pasted onto layout sheets all before Friday at 6:00 pm, in time to get the layouts on the Greyhound bus to the printer. I do recall some down to the wire Fridays and even more frantic drives to the bus station.

I have had the pleasure of browsing through a large number of Courier issues. I always enjoy reading some of the fascinating stories and learning about events found in the pages. There is a 1954 story about Major Dan Cooper, a comic book hero drawn by Albert Weinberg. Major Cooper is a member of 441 Sqn; some cartoons even show him wearing a checker scarf. The Air Force museum has a copy of the book.

Or the New Year’s Eve when it was so warm the Courier front page had a picture of people wearing bathing suits and fishing. I had a chuckle when I read the article printed in January 1992 about a raise in Family Allowance amounts, the rise in rates meant families would receive between $27.60 and $50.10 depending on the children’s ages. Or the story from March 1992 about a military member who saved the life of a twoweek old baby after it stopped breathing. The member was a neighbour of the baby’s family and used her first aid training and instructions from a dispatcher on the phone to save the child and in June 1996, a story was printed about Maple Flag participants from Germany volunteering their weekend to join in the search for a

April 1986 - last Base Flight shuttle run to Edmonton in Christmas baking treats. Some even had skits, some hilarious and others so realistic it gives you chills. My favourite would have to be a WTIS display of a soldier deployed to a combat situation during Christmas; I still get goosebumps.

My own career with The Courier is full of hilarious moments like Black Tuesday, the day we bundled stacks of newsprint for the entire morning resulting in our hands being as black as the ink on the paper and teaching the new staff to speak in acronyms. Their blank stares at staff meetings was priceless, acronyms are a language all their own. Later, I provided all new staff with a list of acronyms currently being used, it made things easier.

My greatest pleasure was the Office Decorating Challenge, the time, effort and creativity each section put into the challenge made the event a great success and something a lot of people looked forward to every year. The staff created their own version of being a little bit cheeky by publishing the judges’ preferences

...and prepares for the future the next couple of weeks. The Courier News will also be launching a weekly newsletter that people can subscribe to free of charge.

July 16 1985 - The Queen Mother stops by for a quick visit. Bad weather in Edmonton forced the crew of the Queen Mother’s aircraft to divert to CFB Cold Lake to wait for the weather to clear.

The Trailer Park Boys came for a TGIF in October of 2006 The greatest experiences of my TV. I followed the crews around like a career was covering several Ex Maple puppy dog, it wasn’t my finest moment.

Flags. Spending media day on the Cold Lake has had its fair share runway during launches, rain or shine, of notable visitors. Canadian astronaut meeting and interviewing military Chris Hatfield visited twice in March personnel from all over the world and 1996 and again in January 2006. Some flying a mission in a refueling tanker say it’s not true but I have documented for a refueling mission. Plus, I have proof that The Queen Mother stopped had the thrilling experience of doing by for a quick visit. Bad weather in a helicopter river run (doors off) over Edmonton prevented the Queen Beaver River, loved it. And who can Mother’s aircraft from landing so the forget 2007, when Jetstream came to crew divert to CFB Cold Lake to wait town, one of the first shows in reality for the weather to clear. She stayed for two hours and was entertained at the Officers’ Mess by the Base Commander and his wife. Rick Hansen visited in March 1987. I have met and interviewed several famous people. Comedian Ron James, The Trailer Park Boys, Tom Chochran, but my favourite has to be Mike Holmes in 2008. He was just as nice and just as large in person as he is on TV. I got a hug.

Today, The Courier News morphs into another better version of itself.

Do unto others P

erhaps the simplest ethical principle is what is known as the Golden Rule. It has been noted that this principle exists in nearly every religion, worldview, and philosophy in the world, most often in the negative – don’t do to others as you wouldn’t want them to do to you. The classic form of the rule in the Western world, quoting Jesus as recorded in the gospel of Matthew, states it in the positive “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Rightly so, since ethics requires more than simply ‘leaving one another alone’. We ought to also actively help, care for, protect, encourage, cheer, indeed love one another.

As a general rule this is easy to understand (though often hard to do), and it is best not to overthink it. If someone is in danger, help them. If someone is hungry, or poor, or homeless, give them what food, or financial support, or shelter you are able – if you found yourself in such misfortune, you would want someone to throw you a bone. If someone is feeling low, encourage them, if someone is a bit of an outsider, let them into the group. Put up with one another’s oddities.

It muddies things, though, that different people want different things. You might meet someone and have certain hopes about what you would have them do to you that would

coincide with what you’d like to unto them. Like I said, it’s best not to overthink it. The question is, would you want them to do something to you that is purely selfish and for their own gain with no concern for you? No! You don’t want them to take from you. You want them to give to you. Therefore, give to them, rather than taking something for your own pleasure with no regard for them.

Bearing this in mind could clear up a lot of ‘what ifs’.

For example: ribbing, banter, friendly teasing, or whatever they call it now (In the artillery, the motto was “never pass a hack”). For many, this is how you feel part of the group: you know you’re accepted when someone gives you a particularly good jab, because they know it won’t offend you. But other folks are more sensitive to that kind of thing and it makes them feel excluded rather than included. The golden rule, then, says not to keep ribbing them (because “I would want them to rib me”), but rather to figure out a different and better way to make that person feel included (since being included is the thing you actually want.)

Now, I’m posted away this summer to study ethics, and particularly the ethics of war. I started off my Courier career with a series of articles about war and killing, and now I only have a couple articles left. So, what about the Golden Rule in war? I definitely don’t want an enemy soldier to shoot me.

So, where does that leave me?

Well, sometimes I guess you have to overthink. If I were under the domination of a cruel tyrant, would I want someone to set me free? I think so. If my life was threatened, would I want someone to step in and stop the person threatening?

With lethal force if necessary? Actually, yes. I would want someone to do that if my wife and children were threatened as well. By that reasoning, the Golden Rule would have me do the same for others.

If I were a soldier, fighting on the side of such a tyrant, protecting the tyrant from justice, helping the tyrant to oppress and kill and destroy – that is, if I were the bad guy – would I want someone to shoot me? Well… I think I’d want them to give me a chance to surrender gracefully, maybe. I would hope they would at least give me the benefit of the doubt, that maybe I am unaware of the evil I’m defending, that I am a human and an equal. I’d hope they would look for an alternative to shooting me before diving right in. But ultimately, I think I can say that, if I am doing something wrong, that hurts people, and protects evil, then I would want someone to tell me, and to stop me if need be, yes.

New Chaplain General for the Canadian Armed Forces NATIONAL DEFENCE / CANADIAN ARMED FORCES Brigadier-General Guy Bélisle was appointed Chaplain General May 31, 2021 in a virtual ceremony presided over by Lieutenant-General Wayne Eyre, Acting Chief of the Defence Staff.

As the Chaplain General, Brig.-Gen. Bélisle assumes responsibility for supporting the religious and spiritual needs of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and their families from the outgoing Chaplain General, Major-General Guy Chapdelaine.

Brig.-Gen. Bélisle says, “I am proud and honoured to be appointed Chaplain General for the Canadian Armed Forces. I look forward to leading a team of chaplains who can provide religious and spiritual support, and guidance, in these most challenging of times to CAF members and their families. “ Commenting on his time spent as Chaplain General, Maj-Gen Guy Chapdelaine states, “The last six years as Chaplain General have been a rewarding experience,

“I am proud to oversee the installation of BrigadierGeneral Bélisle as Chaplain General. Canadian Armed Forces Chaplains are integral to the wellbeing of our members, by providing them spiritual support, and working with leadership, when needed, on matters that require attention in a multifaith framework. Padre Bélisle is well suited to oversee this important work and to lead the Royal Canadian Chaplain Service. Major-General Guy Chapdelaine, thank you for your service to Canada.”

Lt.-Gen. Wayne Eyre, Acting Chief of the Defence Staff Quick Facts • Brig.-Gen. Bélisle joined the CAF in 1986 as an infantry officer with the Royal 22e Régiment.

• In 1988, Brig.-Gen. Bélisle was posted to 2nd Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment in Quebec City, followed by a posting to 1st Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment, which was stationed in Germany at the time. He completed an overseas operational mission with that unit as the first CAF unit deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1992.

• Brig.-Gen. Bélisle later transferred to the Royal Canadian Chaplain Service and studied at St. Paul University in Ottawa from 1998 to 2004, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in theology.

• In 2004, Brig.-Gen. Bélisle was posted to Valcartier as unit chaplain at Land Force Quebec Area Training Centre and The 12ᵉ Régiment blindé du Canada. He was then posted to St-Jean, where he served at the Canadian Forces Recruit and Leadership School for two years. He later returned to Valcartier as brigade chaplain, deploying to Haiti in 2010 after the earthquake, and to Afghanistan in 2010-2011 on the last combat mission.

• From July 2018 to present, Brig.-Gen Bélisle served as the Director of Chaplain Services at the Chaplain General Office.

• After 42 years of service, Maj.-Gen Chapdelaine will be retiring from the CAF.

You’ve been caught - Doing something good JOY SMITH 4 Wing Military Police, Cold Lake RCMP, Cold Lake Peace Officers, and Victim Services are teaming up again this year to serve the youth in the Cold Lake area with Positive Tickets. Between June 1 and July 31, Cold Lake law enforcement teams will be on the look out for kids who are caught being a community hero, demonstrating a positive attitude, making smart choices, or practicing personal safety.

As a reward for doing something good, Cold Lake youth can receive a Slurpee from 7 Eleven, an ice cream cone from Dairy Queen or fries from McDonald’s, with each positive ticket. Plus, everyone that receives a ticket can also be entered into a draw for a prize. This year’s prizes are a PS5, an iPad and Sports package worth $250.00. To enter the draw, the recipient of the Positive Ticket must take a selfie with their ticket and post it on their (or a member of their family’s) Facebook page and tag @ColdLakeVictimServices.

In addition to the Positive ticket program, Cold Lake RCMP and Victim Services intend to do a community initiative in the communities of Elizabeth Metis Settlement and Cold Lake First Nations. They plan to team up with the schools of the two communities and do “Safety Presentations” to the students. At the completion of the presentation,

the students will receive a positive ticket for their attendance/participation.

So get out there and get caught doing something good.

RCAF Air Demonstration teams launch 2021 season under Operation INSPIRATION MOOSE JAW, SK – NATIONAL DEFENCE / CANADIAN ARMED FORCES The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) air demonstration teams officially began their 2021 season May 28, 2021 after formal certification by the Commanders of 1 Canadian Air Division and 2 Canadian Air Division following an acceptance show at 15 Wing Moose Jaw. This summer, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds will be joined by the CF-18 Demonstration team as they again fly under Operation INSPIRATION and attend airshows and conduct flybys across Canada and the United States.

Flying under Operation INSPIRATION will also provide an opportunity to carry on the legacy of Captain Jenn Casey, the Snowbirds Public Affairs Officer who lost her life during the first iteration of Operation INSPIRATION in May 2020 and whose dedication was instrumental to connecting the CAF with Canadians during her time with the air demonstration teams.

Both teams are honoured to continue this work.
