Wing Intersection golf looking for players JERRY INGHAM, 4 WING SPORTS COORDINATOR Are you looking to get outside more this summer? Do you like to golf? If so, we are hoping to put together a recreational Intersection Golf team with as many as 30 golfers to participate. This program will be starting on Tuesday, July 21.

Joining the golf organization is MCpl Adam McAloney who has volunteered as Intersection Golf president.

The only other sport that is able to be played at this time is badminton. We are slowly starting back with these two sports and will keep you notified as more restrictions are lifted for other sports to be played.

Cadet programs on hold as pandemic threatens CLIFF KENYON It will be quieter than usual at 4 Wing Cold Lake this summer.

The base is usually host to swarms of cadets during the summer from throughout Western Canada. But not this summer. Due to the pandemic with rules about gatherings and social distancing, virtually all cadet activities have been cancelled since March.

Like most people, cadets will be staying at home this summer as the entire Cadet program is thrown into turmoil, due to fears over COVID-19.

“Our summer training programs are always an exciting part of the year for our Cadets, so the decision to cancel this part of our training was not taken lightly,” Capt Léonie Laflamme-Savoie, Public Affairs Officer, Regional Cadet Support Unit (Northwest), told The Courier.

This cancellation decision affects: local training, corps and squadron trips, Cadet summer training and activities and in-person training for Cadet Instructors Cadre (CIC) officers.

“That being said, the Canadian Armed Forces have always done everything they can to support our programs especially during the summer

when they provide us with medical support, instructors, and facilities which allow us to operate our summer training programs. By cancelling our summer training, we allowed the Canadian Armed Forces to use these resources to be effective in their mission to protect Canadians during this pandemic. Eccl. 3: 1-8. This Old Testament passage reminds us that there is a reason and purpose for everything in our lives. Therefore, there is also a time to say hello and a time to say goodbye.

Five years ago I arrived in Cold Lake to serve as a unit chaplain. Only few months later the Wing Chaplain retired and I was asked to take over his responsibilities.

With the new job came some challenges, like for example: to ensure proper pastoral and spiritual support to all members and dependants of our Defence team while being understaffed; to allow training and development opportunities to my team without affecting the quality of our ministry; the long periods without proper administrative support; the relocation of the Beehive thrift shop... it truly was baptism by fire.

Overcoming these challenges would not be possible without the support of my past and current team, my Chain of Command and, most importantly,

good citizenship.”

Each year, about 1500 Cadets come to the Cold Lake Cadet Training Centre throughout the summer.

But not this year. All cadet programs, weekly meetings and training sessions at Cold Lake, have been cancelled.

There are 54,325 Cadets in Canada according to June 2019 numbers. This does not include the 4,279 Junior Canadian Rangers.

What I enjoyed mostly about Cold Lake is its natural beauty. They say that “the best things in life come free”. Apparently Cold Lake is the only place in North America to offer free public transport but there are so many other things in our City which are

completely free. I enjoyed walking with my family in the Provincial Park and along the beach and the water front. Different seasons and even times of day can offer us beautiful, unique views of the city. You can admire the Northern lights dancing and changing colours over the night winter skies while the summer evenings treat us with the most breathtaking sunsets.

I am grateful for the opportunity I was granted to serve for the past five years our 4 Wing community.

You will be always in my prayers. Thank you for your service.

It is with a bittersweet feeling that I will be leaving Cold Lake as my family will be staying behind.

Although I am looking forward to my new job and the opportunities God set ahead of me, part of my heart will stay in Cold Lake. It is now time to say goodbye, but as we often say in the Canadian Armed Forces - till we meet again. God bless.

“If I find something of interest on YouTube or other platforms about playing and music in general I share them with band members, but personal practice is very much personal practice. If folks want suggestions I’m happy to provide them, but for the most part they work on their own at their own pace and for the love of it.”

Duggleby won’t be here to see the results of their summer practicing.

At the Museum Cold Lake Air Force Museum has thousands of artifacts. Many are on display and many have been archived and are in storage for future display and research purposes. All items at the museum were donated. Sometimes the

donor knows little about the item, its purpose or history.

Occasionally, museum staff are also stumped by an unusual or rare item. That’s where you come in. The Courier will regularly feature photos of some items and if you know anything about

them please tell us. You can email editor@couriernews.ca or contact the museum.

Who last wore this? What was their rank and what were their duties? Items from the past often leave a legacy of questions and mystery.
