Introducing the newest member of the Col J.J. Parr Sports Centre staff, Megan Garrett.

Megan is the new Sports Stores Technician.

Sports Stores has a wide variety of outdoor activity equipment for the Defence Team to borrow, including several six-man ice fishing tents (pictured) as well as a few 4-man tents. Ice fishing gear included!

4 Wing Cold Lake maintains several kilometres of groomed Cross Country Ski trails at the Cold Lake Golf and Winter Club. Cross country ski boots, skis and poles are available in a limited number of sizes for children as well as adults. No helmets are provided.

If skiing isn’t your speed then give snow shoeing a try. Sports Stores has a large quantity of snow shoes in three sizes: adult large, adult small and children.

Sports Stores can also kit you out with all the essentials to go Ice fishing. A six-man ice fishing tent with a heater, a gas-powered auger and rods are just waiting for an afternoon on the lake. Proof of a valid fishing license is required when you pick up the equipment. Be aware that spaces to book the ice

A new face will be greeting patrons of the Col J.J. Parr Sports Centre Sports Stores. Megan Garrett has joined the PSP team as the new Sports Stores Technician. Raised in Moose Jaw, Megan made her way to Cold Lake via New Brunswick and British Columbia, then returning to Moose Jaw to wait out the COVID-19 pandemic. Megan applied for the Sports Stores tech position while still working with PSP in Moose Jaw and was hired shortly after moving to Cold Lake.

Sports Stores has plenty of gear a winter outdoor enthusiast would need to enjoy the great outside.

Megan can outfit the whole family with Cross Country skis, snow shoes and ice fishing equipment.

Pick up and returns to Sports Stores are by appointment only as per COVID-19 regulations.

Military members and members of the Defence Team can sign out equipment and gear necessary. Members signing out equipment will be asked to complete some paperwork and provide a deposit in the form of cash or cheque. To reserve equipment, call Megan at 780840-8000 ext 8193.

Besides being able to get some great gear from Sports Stores, the Col J.J. Parr Sports Centre also has a couple great outdoor activity options for a fun afternoon. There’s the outdoor skating rink and the skating trail. No appointment necessary, just bring your skates and gear and enjoy.

Here are just some messages from our local and National Defence Team leaders: Colonel Dave Moar, 4 Wing Commander shared, “The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a high degree of uncertainty and disruption to our lives, and it is normal to worry about the potential impact on yourself and your family. As we continue to navigate through this uncertain time and physical isolation, it’s more important than ever to stay connected with friends and family—either virtually, or in ways that follow COVID-19 public health measures.

“Don’t suffer in silence. 4 Wing encourages all leaders, members, and their families, to recognize the signs of mental illness and to seek help for themselves or their loved ones. The best chance for recovery is seeking care early.

“4 Wing members have access to many different support services and resources including the Sentinel program, padres, the Mental Health Department, and even more are available online at forces.gc.ca/ yourenotalone.”

4 Wing Chief Warrant Officer, Chief Warrant Officer Lee Darling, added to the message, “Bell Let’s Talk Day is a day where the Canadian Armed Forces along with Canadians across the country come together to raise awareness of mental health. By learning more about mental health, we can reduce the stigma of mental illness in our workplace, our homes and our communities.

“We all need to make an effort to be aware of and address mental health issues as soon as they arise.

Together, we can help break down the barriers to mental health care.

“The 4 Wing Support Contacts card provides contact information for support services at 4 Wing and in the local area that are available to the Defence Team and their families.

“This card is available from the splash page and on the 4 Wing Cold Lake Information Facebook Group.”

The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, and the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, also issued a statement in support of Bell Let’s Talk Day: “The COVID-19 pandemic has forced each of us to navigate through uncertain and undeniably stressful times. The Bell Let’s Talk campaign provides us with an excellent opportunity to open up about the challenges we have faced this past year, and is a reminder of how

important our connection with others is. That is why the theme for this year’s campaign is ‘When it comes to mental health, now more than ever, every action counts.’

“Our Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members continue to uphold the proud legacy of our Veterans through their work in complex and stressful environments in missions around the globe. Last year, many were called upon in the fight against COVID-19, where they made a tremendous impact, particularly for some of Canada’s most vulnerable. We are grateful to them all, Veterans and current CAF members alike, for their dedication and service to our great nation.

“In recognizing the sacrifices made by our CAF members and Veterans, we must also be ready to support them when occupational stress injuries or mental health issues arise as a result of their service. No one is immune: mental health challenges can affect anyone at any time. Yet we know that unfortunately, the stigma around mental illness can prevent people from coming forward with their own struggles. We want serving CAF members, Veterans and their families, who may be experiencing mental health issues, to know that they are not alone and that resources and support are available to them.

here’s nothing like a wet sock to catch your attention. One winter’s morning (back when we lived in Ontario in the snow belt), I was getting dressed and stepped over to the closet to grab a shirt.

Squelch! I stepped in a puddle. There shouldn’t be a puddle on my closet floor. Why is there a puddle on my closet floor? As the icy cold water soaked my sock, I realized what had happened. On the exterior side of the wall was a small roof overhang. Over the course of the month with the ever-cursed snow falling and temperatures never rising above Alert-at-midnight-inFebruary, a small mountain of ice had formed on this overhang.

Building slowly the mini glacier had engulfed the entire slope and had spawned a prodigious stalactite (or is it stalagmite? I can never remember) of an icicle. This six-foot monster should have been a hint of problems to come, but I can be as thick as last week’s porridge, so I happily went about my business. Until, that is, a wet sock woke me up.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER luxury, let me explain: ice forms on the roof due to heat migrating from the inside, melting the snow on the roof and forming ice. If this process is allowed to continue, what’s called an “ice dam” forms trapping melted water underneath. And if there’s any way water can get inside a wall or a roof, it will. Hence my wet sock. Left long enough (years, say), the roof will rot, mould forms and you have to call Mike Holmes.

So, grumbling and muttering about the injustice of it all, I pulled on boots and coat, dug out my ladder, grabbed a hatchet, and attacked the problem like an over-acting cast member of Vikings.

I climbed up the icy rungs of the ladder (I don’t like heights) and started hacking away wondering all the time if the aluminum deathtrap would suddenly slide out from under me.

Ice chips stung my forehead. Ice chips slid down my neck. Ice chips like needles threatened my eyes.

Ice chips the size of a small puppy (a puppy with razor sharp, 6-inch long fangs) broke off and crashed to the driveway (I should’ve moved the car).

Eventually, fearfully, gradually, I was successful in removing the ice and stopping the infiltration of ice water.

All so I didn’t get a wet sock.

That wet sock was a wake-up call. It alerted me to a problem I didn’t know I had but should’ve guessed I had – if I’d been paying attention.

It happens to the best of us. We’re zipping along and then – squelch! – a wet sock wakes us up to a problem.

It might be losing your temper over something quite insignificant, or withdrawing from your loved ones, or getting sick more often, or a nagging cough that won’t go away, or trouble sleeping. They’re all potential wet socks - wake-up calls – alerting you to a problem that’s been brewing. It might be physical, or emotional, or spiritual. Regardless, you need to check it out. Don’t ignore those wake-up calls. See your doctor, talk to your spouse, see the padre.

Maybe it’s time you paid some attention to that wet sock.

Minister of National Defence marks Black History Month 2021 FEBRUARY 1, 2021 – OTTAWA – NATIONAL DEFENCE / CANADIAN ARMED FORCES “Black History Month is an opportunity for all Canadians to celebrate the accomplishments of Black Canadians. For the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and Department of National Defence (DND), we remember the contributions that Black Defence Team members, both military and civilian, have made throughout Canada’s history. As the Minister of National Defence, I am proud to recognize their brave service.

“This year’s theme for Black History Month, The Future is Now, is in keeping

with our belief that nation building isn’t passive; nor does it rest in the past. It is forward-moving and ever-evolving. It calls on each and every one of us to do better to build a more equal, just and inclusive Canada.

“In building this future together, we must acknowledge and honour the contributions and immense sacrifices of Black Canadians to our organization, and we must strive to better reflect the country we serve: a beautiful mosaic of cultures, ethnicities, and experiences.

“Part of that is owning up to our own systemic biases, discrimination and racism that exist in Canada and here in the Department of National Defence, and it means taking real and

meaningful action to eliminate them from our institution. The Defence Team is determined to eliminate systemic barriers, discrimination and anti-Black racism wherever these arise. Simply put, there is no room for anti-Black racism, white supremacy, or any other hateful ideology anywhere in Canada’s Defence Team. While this past year, DND/CAF issued a hateful conduct policy, launched an Advisory Panel on racism and discrimination, and stood up an Anti-Racism Secretariat, I know that more needs to be done to build an organization where all feel welcome and valued, and where diversity is fully embraced. I look forward to continuing to work with the

Deputy Minister and the Chief of the Defence staff so that we can eliminate all forms of discrimination and intolerance from our organization.

“Diversity is not a slogan or a hashtag. It’s a force enabler that enhances and strengthens our operational effectiveness. In embracing diversity, we value the unique talents, perspectives and cultures of all our Defence Team members, both military and civilian.

“Neither is Black History Month a slogan or hashtag. It’s a call to recognize past sacrifices, eliminate present-day barriers, and build a brighter future together through inclusion and respect.
