4 Wing member receives CAF Male Athlete of the Year award
Submitted Cpl J.W.S. Houck
Captain (Capt) Zachary Zeiler JOY SMITH, REPORTER Captain Zack Zeiler is a Dental Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) stationed at 4 Wing Cold Lake. He is one of six dentists on the Canadian Forces Forensic Odontology Response Team (CF FORT), a team that deploys overseas as part of a disaster response team to aid in victim identification through forensic odontology. Capt Zeiler also deployed to Erbil, Iraq to participate in Op IMPACT Roto 3 where he was the only dentist for all Allied Forces. He has also recently completed an intensive surgical course working alongside CAF oral surgeons at RMC to develop his surgical skillsets. As if this doesn’t prove that Capt Zeiler is an absolute overachiever, the fact that he has been named the CAF Male Athlete of the Year takes it over the

Capt Zeiler participating at the CISM - 7th World Military Games in Wuhan, China in October 2019. Of the three individual Lifesaving events that Capt Zeiler swam in, he was the top Male Canadian performer. top. Capt Zeiler has been a member of the CAF CISM Swim/Lifesaving Team since joining the CAF. During three individual Lifesaving events at the CISM Worlds in September 2019, Capt Zeiler was the top Male Canadian performer, as well as winning every race he entered at the CAF Swim Nationals. He placed second in 2019 in the 100m Rescue Medley at the Canadian Pool Lifesaving Championships (CPLC). This national event hosts the best lifesaving athletes in Canada so it goes without saying that Capt Zeiler is not only the top CAF Male CISM Lifesaving Athlete, but one of the top competitors in Canada. Capt Zeiler spends approximately 12 to 15 hours per week training. On a weekly basis he dedicates his ‘off work’ time to swim specific strength training, cross training spin and yoga sessions and of course swimming. Capt Zeiler has also been fortunate to
participate in the CISM Lifesaving Training Camp. This two-week intensive training camp has athletes training two times a day, every day. All this and he still maintains a full workload as a CAF Dental Officer. Capt Zeiler exemplifies the “Soldier First” mentality, going above and beyond in his regular and ancillary work as a Dental Officer for the CAF, while remaining highly competitive in his sport. This is what sets Capt Zeiler apart earning him the title of 4 Wing Male Athlete of the Year as well as holding that title of the Air Command and the CAF. Upon hearing of his nomination, Capt Zeiler remarked, “[It] was a complete surprise and I’m absolutely thrilled and humbled by it. I had heard rumours of being nominated for 4 Wing Male Athlete of the Year, but I had no idea that it made it up to the CAF level. I’m extremely grateful for all the hard work the 4 Wing PSP staff put into it.”
