Volksmarch winning team from CAF Sports Week donates prize money
Submitted
The team to take the winning prize for the Volksmarch from CAF Sports Week, held on October 19-24, was a combined group consisting of members from Wing HQ, Deputy Wing Command, the Transition Centre and Wing Comptroller. They have decided to donate their team winnings of $200 to the 4 Wing Christmas Hamper Fund. Here in the photo are representatives from the winning team donating the funds to the Padres. With the holidays just around the corner, this will help 4 Wing families in need to make their holidays just a little merrier. More CAF Sports Week winners to be featured in the next few weeks.

4 WING COMMAND TEAM MESSAGE Colonel Dave Moar, 4 Wing Commander and Chief Warrant Officer Lee Darling, 4 Wing Chief Warrant Officer
I
n November we saw an increase in the prevalence of COVID-19 in the region which impacted some of our activities and events. Despite the higher rates of COVID-19 in our community, 4 Wing has been able to adapt and fully continue operations. This is a testament to the adherence of public health measures (PHMs) throughout the Wing. I am pleased to see the members of our base respecting one another by following the guidelines and measures that allow us to work in a healthy environment. This year the Legion and 4 Wing were unfortunately forced to cancel our Remembrance Day ceremony. This decision was not made lightly; we recognize the importance of
taking time to remember and honour those who have fought for the freedom of Canada, Canadians, and our allies throughout the World. Like all Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members across the country, we took time in our own way to attend virtual services, commemorate this important day, and honour the two minutes of silence for our fallen. As the holiday season nears, it is normally a time to gather and celebrate with friends and family and indulge in too many treats. Unlike our normal Christmas routine, this 2020 holiday season comes with many uncertainties. 4 Wing would like nothing more than to enable our members to travel,
rejoin their families, and take part in social festivities. This year, during these exceptional times, I am encouraging you to find other ways to celebrate that will permit you to both protect your health and that of your distant families. Although some of you may have special situations and still choose to travel, I am hoping that most of us will find ways to be innovative and perhaps create a new holiday tradition or two. Continue to work hard and follow the PHMs that have kept our members healthy so far. It is my hope that our community enters the holiday season as healthy as possible with the fewest restrictions required and that everyone enjoys a much deserved break.

Artist Spotlight Featuring Art from Military and First Responders Dario Barahona
Dario Barahona was born in El Salvador. His family immigrated to Canada in 1991 to flee a civil war and pursue a better life for themselves and their children. Dario joined the military in 2010 as a Combat Engineer and later did an occupational
transfer to MSEOP in 2016. He is now posted to the Transition Centre, Cold Lake, AB with his wife and two young boys. “My career in the Armed Forces has had its up and downs, with multiple leg surgeries due to chronic injuries, along with facing mental health issues.” Dario first started painting during his first time in treatment in February 2020 at Sunshine Coast Health Centre in Powell River, B.C. There he participated in art expressions three times a week, where he was taught basic painting fundamentals but more importantly learned a new hobby and an interest which he could enjoy and understand more about himself. “I have been to treatment twice for addictions and mental health issues and it has been something I am very proud of. All the different types of therapies I have learned, groups, activities, workshops, sports and fitness have all been big factors in becoming the person I am today. We all know someone that has struggled or is struggling with addictions and mental health; whether it may be family, friends, co-workers or ourselves. Especially in the world right now with so much uncertainty; take time for yourself, learn a new hobby, a new workout routine, start journaling, start doing

“Tiled” connections is it possible to stay close while being online?
T
he pandemic, working from home and compliance with various restrictions forced many changes in our daily functioning, also in the social area. Initially completely, and now partially, our relationships have moved to monitors and visible “tiles”, which appear in various online social messengers. What do “tiled” bonds look like? Real Relationships. The external crisis has put us in a state of pervasive sense of danger. In addition, it also took away the possibility of the most effective way of dealing with the fear that arises in us, which is the experience of close contact with another human being. In turn, isolation and loneliness can heighten our fears. In addition, the commands to avoid all meetings with people can unknowingly lead us or reassure us that the other person is not only threatening us in terms of infection with the virus. Our psyche often does not differentiate and we could become convinced during the quarantine that the world and other people are dangerous and hostile. In such a situation, the possibility of a close, sincere meeting with other people, especially in a group where support and understanding can be
what you feel passionate about, and don’t just say you will, actually start. Actions speak louder than words. For once in my life I know who I am, where I belong and my current purpose and meaning and I thank all the staff, counselors and the fellow brothers I have met at the Centre along with the medical staff and Mental health team at DND/CAF.”
Padre Marcin Rosinski
CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
found, may become of special importance. So the question arises whether it is possible to establish “real” relationships on the Internet? My observations show that online meetings bring many social benefits and respond to the need for close contact with others. Moreover, on the one hand, such a “tiled” form of relationship may be an undoubted loss of direct contact with a human being, but on the other hand, it may be a profit, as it to some extent facilitates communication with others, especially people who usually experience various types of anxiety in social contacts with people. The screen can become a kind of protection, a tangible boundary that allows for greater openness and spontaneity. In addition, we can experience less unpleasant feelings in online contact, such as shame or embarrassment, which may hinder or even paralyze our social life. Due to the option to exit a given social relationship immediately, we may feel less panicky. Common experiences connect. Openness can also be fostered by the fact that as a society we experience something common, one can say equal for all of us. Regardless of who we are, each of us can get infected. The restrictions
also apply to all of us. So, despite the difficult moment in life, we can discover as a society a certain sense of unity and solidarity that can be tangibly experienced during a conversation in a “tiled circle”. It can be seen that in recent times many of us have gained more free time due to the reduction of responsibilities and mobility. It was a chance to stop, reflect on life and reformulate values. The quarantine could have given us an impulse to be more grateful and humble towards what we have, and what seemed obvious and guaranteed so far. The “tiled” space enabling the exchange of experiences can make us aware of it and bring it all closer. Online meetings can be even more significant in the context of the ubiquitous experience of various types of losses, which can trigger depressive feelings of sadness, regret, helplessness or anger in us. We need meeting other people to be able to name and share these difficult feelings with another person who, although visible only in the “tile”, will react vividly, with empathy and readiness to help and support. marcin.rosinski@forces.gc.ca

International Day of People with Disabilities LIEUTENANT-COLONEL ALAIN GAGNON, DEPUTY WING COMMANDER, 4 WING COLD LAKE December 3 is International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPWD). The theme this year is “ Not All Disabilities are Visible”. So in addition of the annual celebration of people with disabilities, this year IDPWD also focuses on spreading awareness and understanding of disabilities that are not immediately apparent, such as mental illness, chronic pain or fatigue, sight or hearing impairments, diabetes, brain
injuries, neurological disorders, learning differences and cognitive dysfunctions, among others. On December 3, there will be a Microsoft Teams (MS) live event 11-1200 hrs (EST, 9-10 hrs local time). click here to join. Note, you cannot connect via DWAN or your T-DVPNI enabled laptop. Following the theme of “Not all disabilities are visible,” the event will be presented in a talk show format, featuring an open discussion between Len Bastien, Defence Champion for Persons with Disabilities and ADM (IM), and the Defence Advisory Group for Persons with Disabilities (DAG-PWD)
members, Ashley Sullivan, National Deputy Co-Chair and Paul Jones, DAGPWD member. There are great resources available at https:// idpwd.org/. For local information on our local Defence Advisory Group for Person With Disabilities (DAGPWD), please follow http://coldlake.mil.ca/ en/wcommand/eedag/defence-advisory-group-forpersons-with-disabilities/ (intranet only) or contact Cpl Spencer Holmes at spencer.holmes@forces.gc.ca. If you want to volunteer and help support this group, Cpl Holmes will be able to tell you how you can do it. This is an important day, as this serves as a reminder that not all disabilities are visible. A significant portion of the population lives with a disability that is not visible. And having a disability doesn’t prevent people from bringing something useful to the community. By supporting each other, we make a stronger community.
