Christmas greetings from 4 Wing
Cpl Justin Roy, 4 Wing Imaging
4 Wing Commander Colonel Dave Moar, and 4 Wing Chief Warrant Officer Lee Darling pose for a Christmas group photo, just outside of Wing Headquarters, Building 170, 4 Wing Cold Lake, Alberta, on December 3, 2020. 4 Wing members, families, and friends, 2020 has been difficult with many challenges and changes, a fact that’s even more evident at this time of year. Fondly known as the “silly season” at 4 Wing, mid-December is traditionally a time of competition, activities, and celebrations. The festive spirit and comradery really comes alive on the Wing with team luncheons, hockey games, office decorating competitions, unit dinners, the “At Home”, and Wing walk-around. This year we have been forced to forego almost all of these important traditional events in the interest of keeping everyone safe and healthy. We have made hard decisions this year, but they have been made for the right reasons. Although the 2020 holiday season will not look or feel the same as in previous years, it may be an opportunity to start some new personal or family
traditions. You may not be able to reunite with your family and friends in person, but we encourage you to stay connected to others as much as possible. You may not feel like you need to stay connected, but the person on the other end of your text, call, email, letter, or online game might really need to hear from someone. Please remember that we have many great support services available within the Wing and community for you and your family members. Wing Chief Warrant Officer (WCWO) Darling and I encourage you to print or save a copy of the 4 Wing Support Contacts card that’s available from the splash page or on the 4 Wing Cold Lake Information Facebook Group. The 4 Wing Support Contacts card is a comprehensive list of the supports services available on the Wing and in the community. You never know when you might need to help yourself or a friend. National Defence hosts the fourth Seamless Canada roundtable with provinces and territories DECEMBER 10, 2020 – OTTAWA – NATIONAL DEFENCE / CANADIAN ARMED FORCES The Department of National Defence (DND), Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services met virtually with representatives and participants from Canada’s provinces and territories over the past two days to discuss the department’s Seamless Canada initiative. In support of Canada’s defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged (SSE), DND and CAF launched Seamless Canada in 2018 to improve services to CAF members and their families when they move to a different province or territory. There have been two additional meetings since then, in December 2018 and June 2019. This year, due to COVID-19 protocols, representatives and participants from provinces and territories participated virtually in the fourth roundtable. In his opening address, the
“Supporting Canadian Armed Forces members and their families has always been our top priority. It is why we will continue to work together with our provincial and territorial partners to ease the challenges and stresses that they face. And we know that the COVID-19 pandemic has made the relocation for military postings for members and their families even more challenging. The work that Seamless Canada will continue to do shows our enduring commitment to support our members and their families whenever they need to relocate.” -The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, underlined the continued work that needs to be done to support military families and improve their quality of life, no matter where they live in Canada. General Jonathan Vance, Chief of the Defence Staff, also addressed delegates at the start of the second day. Over the two days, the conference introduced a proposed Terms of Reference
for a Seamless Canada Steering Committee and examined opportunities to improve coordination with respect to services supporting CAF spousal employment, health care insurance applications, virtual health care, childcare, and youth education. Provinces and Territories also shared initiatives that they had taken to support CAF members being posted to their jurisdictions.
The Reason For The Season
Quick Facts • Seamless Canada was launched on June 27, 2018, to reduce the significant challenges that many CAF members and their families experience during relocation. • Challenges related to accessing health care, spousal employment, childcare, and education remain the most pressing. Accessing local health care upon relocation is an issue affecting the greatest number of military family members across Canada. • There is value in ongoing and strengthened collaboration between DND and every province and territory in addressing transition issues for military families. • The Seamless Canada initiative supports Canada’s defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged (SSE), by helping the CAF retain the talented people it recruits, while ensuring their well-being. • The Seamless Canada virtual roundtable on December 8 and 9, 2020 was hosted through the Canadian Intergovernmental Conference Secretariat, an impartial agency whose mandate is to provide administrative support and planning services for federalprovincial-territorial and provincial-territorial conferences of first ministers, ministers and deputy ministers, throughout Canada.

Christmas Hamper Campaign a huge success
Tuesday, December 15, 2020
Padre Oliver Edwards
CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
Christmas and tradition
C Pte Connie Valin, 4 Wing Imaging
Most of the pews in the St. Mark’s Chapel at 4 Wing Cold Lake are occupied with all the generous donations received this year for the Padre’s Christmas Hamper Campaign. In fact, so many donations were received that all the hampers needed were full with plenty left over. This abundance will go to the local Food Bank to help even more in need this holiday season. Padres from front to back, Captain Oliver Edwards, Major Howard Ritthouse and Captain Andrew Whitman.
Janae Wandler
Captain Whitman stands beside one of the pews that was filled with some of the extra food received for the Christmas Hampers. The spirit of giving was in abundance this year by our local Defence Team. Thank you, 4 Wing, for your kindness this season!
hristmas is a time where for many of us we reconnect with traditions, nostalgia, and memories of good times with friends and family. It is one of the few times where we look back and enjoy the old, rather than race headlong for the new and fresh. Christmas music is a great example of this: though it is always popular to hear new covers of old classics, there is something about the voices and sounds of the originals that make them evergreen in our minds, and comforting to our souls. These arrangements may even go back before we are born – I, myself, love the Nat King Coles, the Bing Crosbys, the Perry Comos, though they recorded their songs before I was even born. Traditions help us to feel connected and grounded. They are good for our mental health. And many traditions people practice during the holidays are related to their spiritual being, connecting with the divine. So traditions can also be a very important boost to our spiritual well-being and resiliency. For all these reasons, I encourage you that this year, more than any other, to embrace and cultivate tradition in your seasonal festivities, as far as you can go. For many of us in the military, the transient lifestyle makes carrying on many traditions harder – decorations, trees, and so on are hard to pack and unpack and find time to set up in between TDs, courses, and even deployments.
But they are worth it to make the extra effort for your own well being and for those around you. Lastly, I would like to encourage you to consider developing your own traditions as well. For some, their family or past traditions may be a source of confusion, or even negative connections. Returning to them may be hard, or simply a non-starter for various reasons. This does not diminish the importance of traditions though. If this is you, consider what is meaningful for you at this time of year. Have you found alternate spiritual practices that differ from your family of origin? Consider finding a way to make a new tradition involving them. Are you in a new relationship with a significant other? Maybe it is time to develop together a new tradition for just the two of you – this will help bond you and strengthen your connection as well as build a sense of safety grounding in this season. As you navigate this season, our whole chaplain team is at your disposal should you struggle. We all know it won’t be the same if we can’t travel and visit and participate in the usual group social activities, but we can and we will get through it… together. Don’t be afraid to reach out through the COC if you need support from a padre this Christmas. Blessings!
