International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, and this year it was observed on Aug. 10. It is a day created to raise awareness of the pressing needs of Indigenous Peoples.

Work to rectify the longstanding inequities that Indigenous groups disproportionately face continues. These inequities — poverty, poor educational attainment, victimization, incarceration and poor health, among others — exact an enormous toll on Indigenous Peoples and society.

“The national Truth and Reconciliation Commission recognized the great power of education to address the many challenges faced by Indigenous communities.

The University of Alberta is deeply committed to the TRC’s Calls to Action and partnerships such as this one are critical levers to support the educational goals of Indigenous Peoples.

Education is the single most effective means by which the systems that continue to disadvantage can be addressed and the contributions of Indigenous Peoples honored,” said Florence Glanfield, ViceProvost (Indigenous Programming and Research) at the U of A. Jamieson also pointed out that it is thanks to the support from the Government of Canada that Indspire was able to provide the matching funds.

Poitras recognizes the opportunity to be a role model in her own community — and to her children: Jarris (10 years old), Kingston (11) and Blaize (16). With the financial support she received from CIBC and Indspire, she has wrapped up her student teaching at LeGoff School in the Cold Lake First Nations community and will convocate in November. The award offered her some peace of mind as she pursued her dream of being a teacher.

“People don’t think about the emotional aspect of education. To be stressed out, to have your mind in financials and wondering what you’re going to do the next month … it’s hard on a student. Receiving [this award] did me well emotionally, mentally and spiritually,” she said.

Poitras is passionate about teaching from an Indigenous perspective and ensuring her students have confidence in their identity.

“In the past, education was forced on Indigenous Peoples as a way to assimilate them. Today, we can use education as an empowerment tool, one teacher at a time.”

Wanted: Nominations for Youth/Student Awards!

DEFENCE STORIES Do you know any young, rising stars who’ve already made their mark on the Defence Team? If so, here’s your chance to nominate them for the Youth/Student Award as part of the relaunched DM Commendations Program!

The Youth/Student Award is open to young leaders (ages 18 – 25) who have inspired their peers and the Defence Team while embracing the values of Strong, Secure, Engaged.

Here’s a list that can help identify a potential nominee: Young leaders who:

• Demonstrate integrity and break down barriers; • Strive for excellence despite any drawbacks; • Do not let obstacles impede their success; and/ or • Have high ambition and a continuous desire to self-improve.

The individuals, or teams must also demonstrate: • Character and an ability to overcome adversity; • A positive attitude; • The ability to support, and respect others with honour and dignity; and/or • The ability to inspire and motivate others

through actions and solutions.

So if you know a young leader, or a team of young leaders (maximum 10 individuals), who meets that criteria, nominate them today!

Talking about overdose could save a life LISA FISHER, HEALTH PROMOTION SPECIALIST August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD). This year marks the 20th anniversary of IADO, a campaign that began in Melbourne, Australia in 2001. The aim of this global campaign is to raise awareness of overdose and reduce associated stigma.

When people hear the word “overdose”, their minds often jump to opioids. This makes sense, since Canada and the world is in the midst of an opioid crisis. In Canada, there were over 15,000 apparent opioid-related deaths between January 2016 and 2019, and a further 19,377 opioid-related poisoning hospitalizations (excluding Quebec).

More than 21,000 suspected opioidrelated overdoses occurred between January and December 2019. Those are overwhelming numbers, and not something to be taken lightly. Opioids (e.g. fentanyl, morphine, oxycodone,

hydromorphone) are medications that can help relieve pain and they can be legal or illegal. A legal opioid is prescribed by a healthcare professional.

An illegal opioid is one that is made, shared or sold illegally. But it’s not just opioids that lead to overdose.

An overdose is when a person has more of a drug or a combination of drugs than their body can handle. All drugs can cause an overdose, even a prescription or over-the-counter medication.

Alcohol is a drug and many people don’t connect it with overdose.

Alcohol is a depressant, which means it slows down the brain and, therefore, bodily functions including your breathing and heart rate. Binge drinking can lead to acute alcohol poisoning, or overdose, as you consume a large amount of alcohol quickly. When you participate in binge drinking, your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) increases quickly, which can lead to your body ceasing proper function. oing back to school can cause anxiety and insecurity in children. Here are some tips on how to support them.

Let’s talk to the children about the situation we are in.

Let us show that we are with them, that they have support from us as adults. This is crucial for children.

There are children who really miss their peers and school, but some of them in a situation of isolation related to the coronavirus have had a chance to take a break and catch a breath - mainly those for whom school is a difficult experience for various reasons, for whom communing with a peer group is a challenge, children who experience peer violence, bullying or for those who experience a “social phobia”. For them, going back to school will probably be a huge difficulty and challenge.

Can we support the children in their return to school, if it does happen at all? Of course. It is worth talking about how they feel in the current situation, what they need to feel as comfortable in it as possible, and what can be done to make return to school as less burdensome for them as possible.

It is also important that both we, the carers and the children, are aware and understand that fears are natural. That the information that reaches us, for example from the media, may cause us anxiety.

Another side of it are teachers who are themselves in a difficult situation. It would be great if schools had some sort of “model of functioning” after the period of isolation. By such a model, I mean a number of activities that each institution could propose to its students. For

It is important for teachers to talk to children, to say that they know what the situation is, to be open to students, their needs and difficulties, and to talk about the challenges that we all face. It’s good for them to be able to signal their readiness to talk to the child when she/he needs it.

What if lockdown happens again? Are we able to prepare children so that isolation is as little stressful as possible for them? Let us ask our children this question and ask what they would need in such a situation, and what appears to be the greatest difficulty. What we can do is educate and say that the situation is unpredictable.

The possible scenarios are very different, but even telling the children that we ourselves have concerns will be such a safety buffer. It is important to talk about what is difficult for us, to discuss possible solutions. We, as adults, will not be able to meet all needs, but just noticing them will be a signal to the child that she/he is not alone, that they can count on us and talk to us.

And how to talk to children? First of all, honestly and openly. Don’t assume anything, be curious about what the children have to say. Suppose, imagine, discuss, and talk about what is happening, talk about our own fears, about what makes us angry. When we tell the child about it, we will give him a signal that he will also be able to talk to us about the same. There are homes where parents rarely talk to their children, and it may seem strange

the first time, but it’s worth trying to conquer our own reservations.

But how not to stress or scare the child with our own fears? The best solution is to speak about the facts and to name your emotions. It is worth verifying what our child knows. We can ask them or discuss, for example, about the information we hear while watching the news. We can also use the message “I feel / I think / I wonder how it is with you”, “I imagine that you may feel, for example, lost, confused...”. It is possible that the child will empathize with us, but that also does not mean that she/he will take on our own fear or anxiety. It is worth normalizing emotions, also the difficult ones, and making room for them in everyday conversations.

If we are in a situation where, for example, we are afraid that we will lose our job, it is worth talking about what we are afraid of. The child is likely to worry about us, and this is natural in this situation. It is important to adapt the content and method of providing information to the age of the child.

Worry, nervousness or stress are completely natural and normal reactions to various situations. Sometimes the stress is short-lived, and sometimes it can cause anxiety and other symptoms that hinder the functioning, such as avoiding stressful situations, stomach pains, headaches, etc., and in this case, we should provide specialist support for our child. Cost-free training for transitioning CAF members and Veterans interested in working in the IT sector DND A pilot project to train transitioning Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and Veterans for civilian information technology (IT) jobs is underway.

Entitled the Cyber Workforce Enablement Program, or CWEP for short, the project provides high-demand, cyber-career training to hundreds of transitioning members and Veterans, leveraging their existing military skills and preparing them to work in

the IT sector with both the Federal Government and businesses across Canada.

The pilot project started in May and is the result of a partnership between the CAF Transition Group, the social impact company WithYouWithMe, and the multinational professional services firm Ernst & Young.

IT training being offered can be taken individually at one’s own pace, with training usually taking about six to 12 weeks depending on the course, or via scheduled virtual “boot camps” during which the

training is completed over the course of an intensive week, including live sessions with an online instructor.

In either case, all courses and training are offered free of cost, with the partners’ goal being simply to assist military personnel in their transition back to civilian life.

Cold Lake’s youth positive ticket program a success JANAE WANDLER For the month of July, RCMP Officers, Military Police and Cold Lake Municipal Law Enforcement were on the lookout. But what were they looking for you ask? Well, they made sure to stop any youth they encountered that were doing something

positive and they gave them a ticket. Not that type of ticket but what they called a positive ticket and it came with a reward instead of a fine. Any youth given a ticket got to choose a Slurpee from 7-11, an ice cream from DQ or some fries or ice cream from McDonalds. All they had to do was show that they

were practicing personal safety, being a community hero, demonstrating a positive attitude, and/ or making a smart choice.

Services were entered for a draw to win a grand prize of a new iPad, with two more secondary prizes of $100 gift cards to Mach 1 Sports and Sport Chek.

This initiative is all thanks to Cold Lake Victim Services with a total of 400 tickets handed out. Everyone involved was happy with the outcome of the program and hope that it can be continued for next summer.
