Changes to Col J.J. Parr Sports Centre

You will find exercise equipment spread throughout the Col J.J. Parr Sports Centre for booking. The Blue Arena has a Spin bike section, as well as several fitness “pods” with access to various types of equipment available for use, such as dumbbells, kettle bells, pre-weighted barbells, BOSU balls, physio balls, tubing, sandbags, battle ropes, three rowing machines, push/pull sled, tire flips, various benches, lifting rack (one rack), medicine balls, mats, foam rollers, etc. See page 2 for more fitness zones available for booking.

JANAE WANDLER A lot has happened this year that has changed how the world operates. In response to the World Health Organization proclaiming that COVID-19 was a pandemic back in March, 4 Wing took action for the safety of everyone. This included closing the Col J.J. Parr Sports Centre.

Things are evolving and we’re learning more and more about the

virus. With this new knowledge, we are able to start opening up more facilities with proper precautions in place. This is good news and it means that we have been able to slowly start opening up the Col J.J. Parr Sports Centre.

As of Monday, August 17, the facility has opened up to the entire Defence Team and their families. But things don’t look the same as they used to. For starters, you have to wear a mask when entering the building. There’s a sign-in

PSP Summer Program full of fun JANAE WANDLER Since June 29, PSP has been offering a weekly summer program to kids aged 6-12 years old. The program this year has been hosted at the Col J.J. Parr Sports Centre. Each week has been filled with fun activities inside and out while providing a safe environment during this unique time with COVID-19 restrictions in place.

Many activities included an assortment of crafts, indoor and outdoor games, STEM activities, fun at the splash park, nature walks, yoga, Zumba and so much more.

The program is set to end on August 28 before the upcoming school year begins.

PSP has been hosting a summer program since 2012 and it has proven to be a great enhancement to the Defence Team and their families. Having a blast with some free time in the field. Practicing gymnastics moves was a frequent occurrence at PSP Summer Program.

While beach volleyball courts are fun for playing volleyball, at PSP Summer Program we got creative and also used it as a giant sandbox.

The kids enjoyed building sandcastles, digging holes with pails and shovels, and of course taking turns getting covered in the sand.

Although there were some limitations on games due to COVID-19 guidelines, we managed to find some fun games to keep the kids engaged and active!

Reservist, nurse pleads for unity in pandemic fight PETER MALLETT A naval reservist who returned in June from her work at a long-term care home in Quebec has one small request of Canadians: Wear a mask and follow the guidelines of health experts.

“It’s vitally important that all people in all parts of the country follow the rules because it will save countless lives as this global pandemic unfolds,” says OS Eloise Lavoie, a registered nurse.

“Even if you live in a region of the country with a low number of reported cases, wearing a mask, washing your hands, and social distancing is not that hard to do and is the easiest way to reduce the spread of COVID-19.”

The 22 year old is a member of Montreal-based reserve unit NCSM/ HMCS Donnacona. She was one of approximately 1,500 military members deployed to 54 long-term care facilities in Quebec and Ontario in April, May, and June as part of Operation Laser.

OS Lavoie and other members from Donnacona were deployed to a seniors residence in Manoir Verdun, a suburban neighborhood of Montreal, in April. Before their arrival, many residents at the nursing home had become infected with COVID-19, with eight dying from it.

Military members were tasked by the government to help as approximately 1,200 staff at long term care facilities in Quebec had not shown up to work due to illness, as a precaution, or out of fear of being infected.

“Many residents in the Verdun nursing home simply couldn’t get their regular daily care and were left on their own for hours at a time because they were so short of staff,” said OS Lavoie.

When the request came from her unit for volunteers she was one of the first to step forward.

“I called my supervisor and said I want to do this. I thought to myself, I am young, healthy, and have the nursing skills that I could put into helping people who need our assistance immediately.”

She spent most of her time working on a quarantined floor of the nursing home designated for approximately 20 people who had tested positive for COVID-19. Her role was categorized as non-medical but the duties she performed were essential to the patients.

She helped residents in every facet of their daily routine, from getting in and out of their bed; getting to the bathroom, bathing, getting dressed, eating and exercising. An added hurdle was many of the residents she cared for were Dementia patients.

She worked eight hour shifts from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., with few days off. She was housed in a nearby hotel with other members of her unit.

Since they could not attend restaurants because they were selfisolating, a catering company provided their daily meals. The support was greatly appreciated, she said.

wore irked many residents. Every day she donned a surgical mask, face shield, protective yellow medical gown covering their entire body, and gloves.

“It was hard for many of the residents to completely grasp or understand what was going on and they were a little bit anxious when they saw someone arrive in their room with all that gear.”

In an effort to put them at ease, she, the other nurses, and other military members wrote their names on their protective shields which immediately reduced the level of anxiety, she says.

“We were able to speak to them and they could also see the expression in our eyes which was very important because happiness and other emotions can be conveyed through the eyes.”

After returning home and reflecting on her experience, she says the big payoff was being able to help make a desperate situation better.

“To be able to help these people, to make them smile, to ease their concerns, to let them know things were going to be okay, and knowing that they trusted you and looked forward to seeing you was the greatest reward I could have had.”

While the long term care facilities phase of Operation LASER is currently in a draw down state, a contingency task force of 10 civilian care teams will remain at the ready until August 15. They will be on call to respond to any COVID-19 outbreaks that overwhelm staff and provincial response capabilities.

NORAD air defence Medley CFB Society is looking exercise planned for board members for Arctic region JANAE WANDLER

NORAD PUBLIC AFFAIRS PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

– North American Aerospace Defense Command will conduct an air defense exercise from August 17-21, ranging from the Beaufort Sea to Thule, Greenland.

The exercise will include Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 fighter aircraft, CP-140 longrange patrol aircraft , and a CC-150T air refueler; as well as United States Air Force F-15 fighter aircraft, KC10 refueler, and C-17 transport aircraft. The exercise will be based out of 4 Wing Cold Lake, Alberta; and Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

Exercise flights will be conducted over sparsely populated Arctic areas and at high altitudes. The public is not likely to see or hear the exercises; however, there will be increased flight activity at Yellowknife. This exercise is in no way related to the Government of Canada or United States’ response to COVID-19.

NORAD routinely conducts exercises with a variety of scenarios including airspace restriction violations, hijackings and responses to unknown

aircraft.

NORAD carefully plans and closely controls all exercises. This air defense exercise provides us the opportunity to hone our skills as Canadian and U.S. forces operate together with our allies and partners in the Arctic.

NORAD has implemented preventative measures including regular hand sanitation, physical distancing, and wearing of face masks in situations where physical distancing is not possible to mitigate potential risk of exposure to novel coronavirus (COVID-19) by military members and the local population. In addition, participating U.S. military personnel require two negative COVID-19 tests prior to arriving in Canada, and all military personnel positioned at forward operating locations will be isolated on the base.

For more than 60 years, NORAD has identified and intercepted potential air threats to North America through the execution of the command’s aerospace warning and aerospace control missions. NORAD also keeps watch over Canadian and U.S. internal waterways and maritime approaches under its maritime warning mission.

The Medley CFB Society has been supporting the Cold Lake Community since 1981. Their mission is simple: to improve the quality of life for the Cold Lake Defence Team by supporting self-sustaining initiatives using strategic long term financial management.

And that is just what they do. Most consistently, they provide financial support and management of North Bay Cabins and they oversee the CWO Peter Stauffer Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship awards three students each year with $2500 to go towards their secondary education.

They also help to support projects and programs within the local community. Most recently, funding was provided to the RCAF Museum for their observation tower and the Society provided a $25,000 donation to Valour Place in Edmonton.

In the last months, support has also been

provided to the Dr. Margaret Savage Crisis Centre, RCMP Victims Services and Cold Lake Library Storytime.

Quitting tobacco: find your why LISA FISHER, HEALTH PROMOTION SPECIALIST This month, the Health Promotion Team is dedicating their time to promote awareness and understanding of tobacco and vaping, with specific emphasis on harm reduction or elimination by cutting back or quitting tobacco. It’s no secret that there are tobacco users on 4 Wing, and you may be one of them. We also aren’t hiding the fact that it can be really hard to quit. If you have ever tried to quit tobacco before, then you know this firsthand. Some people can walk away from tobacco on the first try and never go back, but those people are few and far between. For most people, it will take multiple quit attempts for a tobacco-free lifestyle to stick. Addiction to nicotine is not the only thing that makes it hard to quit; the behavioural component of using tobacco, especially smoking is engrained. Think about the hand-to-mouth movement of smoking, having your mouth occupied by a cigarette or lighting up a cigarette out of habit with routine everyday tasks (e.g. having a coffee, driving to work, drinking a beer on the back deck).

Since it can be difficult to quit, it’s important to understand your “why”. This essentially means

knowing what your motivation is to quit. Maybe your use is negatively impacting your health. You likely family has been harping on you for ages to give it already know that there are plenty of health benefits up. Or your doctor has recommended quitting to for quitting smoking. Theme for Padre’s Soccer Camp is to “Press On”

Twenty-eight were able to participate in the Padre’s Soccer Camp that almost was cancelled due to COVID-19.

PADRE ANDREW WHITMAN During Soccer Camp this past week, the kids learned to Press On. Press on through the challenges of soccer and training, as well as through the challenges of life.

It was a fun week, and it was refreshing to be with such youth and enthusiasm for a week. The camp was a success, despite some interesting challenges along the way, most of which are spelled “COVID”. Normally taking place in mid July, we had already cancelled it and moved on, when Alberta guidelines allowed for day camps to open under proper precautions. So, we started toying with the idea of turning it back on. Eventually, with limited time, restrictions on registration size, and limited volunteers, we ‘pressed on’ to put the camp together. A special thanks to Military Police Unit for coming out to clock our soccer kicks with their radar guns. That was a highlight for the kids… and the coaches. Starting with 20 children

registered, we had a total of 28 come out to learn some soccer skills as well as some important life lessons.

The theme for the camp – Press On – comes from Paul’s letter to the Philippians, where he says, “Not that I have already obtained this, or that I am already perfect, but I press on, to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.” We learned that to press on, we need to know the goal: what are we trying to accomplish? And we need to keep our eyes on the Coach. And we need to be brave, and we need to have hope, and we need to finish well.

These are lessons that the children learned each day as they practiced their soccer skills. These are important lessons on the soccer pitch, of course, but they also apply to life. During the week, we followed the life of the Apostle Paul (the guy who said to Press On). At the beginning, the apostle Paul was so blind that he was going for the wrong goal in life. To keep with the soccer analogy, he was like a star player who got turned around, confused and going for the wrong

uring the past few months, face masks have become a common sight. As provinces across the country ease their lockdowns and we are able to mingle in the wider world again, a growing number of people are opting to wear face masks in public. When we can’t maintain the recommended social distancing, we wear them in our workplaces, stores, and in the fall, the children will be wearing them as they go back to school. Face masks are becoming mandatory in some shops and towns. And while this may have brought about some heated debates, my own faith tradition provides me guidance on this matter.

When asked which is the greatest commandment, Jesus responded, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind….And love your neighbor as yourself.” Love your neighbor as yourself. And then we

end. But God stopped him with a blinding light. After being actually blind for three days, God made the scales fall from his eyes and heart and made him a new man, with new eyes fixed on a new coach: Jesus.

Paul faced many challenges in this new life he chose to follow, from being stoned and left for dead, to being shipwrecked in a storm, to being bitten by a poisonous snake. But Paul faced the challenges bravely and with hope that can only come from trusting that God would fulfil His promise to bring him to Rome, and ultimately to eternal life with Jesus. Finally, Paul finished well, working hard at his task even when he was uncertain to get to the goal.

And what was Paul’s goal? What is the ‘this’ he had not obtained, that he wants to ‘make his own’. He was talking about eternal life. Not just any eternal life, but eternal life with Jesus. That is what kept him going.

To press on in life, we need to have the right goal, one that keeps us going, one that we can trust to actually fulfil his promises. May we all find such a goal.

A form of this guiding ethic can be found in every major religion and in atheistic moral systems as well. It is the most basic and easily applied rule we share.

These guiding principles: Love Your Neighbor as Yourself and Do Unto Others as You Would Have Them do Unto You, give us a clear way ahead when asking ourselves if we should wear a mask. Wearing a mask isn’t about being afraid or even preventing ourselves from getting sick. We wear a mask so others may not get sick. It’s about keeping our co-workers, friends and neighbors safe. Masks may be uncomfortable, but it’s a small inconvenience, a small sacrifice that actually is a larger symbol of our care and compassion for each other.

A blessing for Wearing a Mask:

Giver of All Life,

May we wear our masks grateful for our health and the health of those around us.

May we wear our masks with compassion, knowing that this small act is one of kindness.

May our masks draw us together, Inspiring respect for one another and enabling mutual care.

Bless our masks and all they teach us About loving our neighbors and our community.

And help us to find purpose in this new task,

As we await the day we can remove them safely and with joy.
