New Cruise Missile Testing Display in the Works for the Cold Lake Air Force Museum MAJOR KAEL “KATO” RENNIE There was a time in the mid1980s when Cold Lake and the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range (CLAWR) were at the forefront of national and international news and protests regarding the subject of the United States Air Force (USAF) testing of cruise missiles in Canada. The Canadian government signed a deal with the United States in the early 1980s that permitted the USAF to fly B-52 bomber aircraft loaded with cruise missiles up into the high Arctic. The B-52’s would release these unarmed cruise missiles over the Beaufort Sea which then flew autonomously via terrain navigation at sub-sonic speeds thousands of kilometers through Canadian northern airspace before touching down in the CLAWR. Although these missiles were unarmed for testing purposes, they were being designed to carry both conventional and nuclear payloads which caused massive Peace Protests across Canada and indeed around the world at a time when tensions were very high during the Cold War. As part of the first step in creating a new Cruise Missile Testing exhibit at the Cold Lake Air Force Museum (CLAFM), Major Kael “Kato” Rennie, the CLAFM Chair and project coordinator wanted to acquire an actual cruise missile. However this posed a number of challenges, namely that the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) doesn’t have any in their inventory and trying to obtain one from the USAF would pose significant crossborder issues with military equipment. That and the actual physical size of an AGM-86B cruise missile is 18 feet long, which requires a lot of floor space to display! Instead, the CLAFM looked at other options and with the advancement of 3D printing technologies, they contracted Greg Newton from Repli3D to take on this enormous project. For those familiar with 3D printing, they know that it is

The Cold Lake Air Force Museum (CLAFM) would like to thank Greg Newton (right) from Repli3D and his assistant Daniel Jacobs (left) for 3D printing a 6 foot replica AGM-86B cruise missile. now capable of printing high quality items, but they take a long time to print. For instance, to print one chess piece could literally take 4+ hours or longer, depending upon the printer quality. One can imagine the complexity and time required to print and assemble the pieces to put together 6 feet of Cruise missile (roughly 1/3 of original size)! After months of printing, sanding and assembly, the cruise was deliver to the CLAFM on 8 April! The next

stage for missile completion is a paint scheme and decal work to replicate the original look during the testing phase. With this first critical component of the display complete, the CLAFM will now focus on the research and development of the rest of the display. The focus will be two-fold, part of the display will explain the historical aspects of the actual testing of the cruise missiles (the military side) and the other

half of the display will concentrate on the protesting that took place in Cold Lake, Canada and the rest of the world in response to this perceived escalation of the Arms Race during the Cold War. Stay tuned for further progress updates and an expected completion date later in the summer of 2020. Museum hours and opening will be promulgated at a later date as the COVID-19 situation evolves.
