2019 4 Wing Cold Lake
Your Guide To Morale & Welfare: • Recreation • Travel • Facilities
A Cold Lake Welcome It gives great pleasure to welcome you to Exercise SENTINEL EDGE, hosted and supported by 4 Wing Cold Lake. For many of you it may be your first trip to Northern Alberta, or even Canada. Whatever the case may be, the 4 Wing Defence Team hopes you will enjoy everything this Wing has to offer. The Royal Canadian Air Force selected this region for the construction of their newest military installation in 1952. It became operational in the summer of 1954 as an air weapons and flight training facility, a heritage we are proud to uphold to this day. Since then, we have developed into Canada’s largest Fighter wing and second largest Royal Canadian Air Force base. For this exercise, we look forward to supporting you and showcasing our assets, such as the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range and our capacity as an operational Fighter Force. We are proud of what we do and take great pride in our reputation as an international training center for combined and joint operations. To support your needs and make your stay enjoyable, we also have many services to offer you, such as: Recreation facility, Col J.J. Parr Sports Centre, for a full range of activities: • multiple gymnasiums; • rock climbing wall; • multi use pool; • weight and cardio room; • racket ball and squash courts; • sports fields; • baseball diamonds; • beach volleyball and tennis courts; and • equipment loan program (sports/outdoor activities) Chapel services (Protestant and Catholic); CANEX retail store; 4 Wing Theatre; and Cold Lake Golf and Winter Club’s 18 hole golf course, to name a few! On behalf of the Royal Canadian Air Force we extend you a warm welcome to 4 Wing Cold Lake and our region.

Cold Lake Outdoors Trails The Cold Lake Provincial Park lies in the transition zone of the Aspen Parkland and the Northern Boreal Forest. This location makes for a unique opportunity to see numerous bird species and a chance to view local wildlife. There are nine kilometres of maintained trails for hiking or mountain biking. Along with the trails in the park, Cold Lake has a number of other trails that provide recreation routes through and around the City. African Lake Trail, Millennium Trail (no motor vehicles) and the Iron Horse Trail are ideal for hiking or mountain biking. Bicycle Rentals – at Col. J.J. Parr Sports Centre 780-840-8000 extension 7806 Horseback Riding – North Country Trails 780-207-5474 Golf The Cold Lake area has three 18 hole golf courses all within 30 minutes of each other. The site has been redesigned to feature Cold Lake’s Aboriginal history and culture; the local heritage; oil and gas industry; and especially the Air Force. A visit to this museum is the best way to learn about our diverse community. Land of the Kinosoo The word “Kinosoo” when translated from the Cree language means “Big Fish”. This is no surprise as the Alberta angling record for lake trout is held by a 52 pounder caught on Cold Lake in 1929. On average, the lake trout caught today are between 15 – 20 pounds. However, the big one is still out there. You may be the lucky one to reel it in!

Calgary Where visitors are encouraged to “be part of the energy,” Calgary is approximately a six hour drive south-west of Cold Lake, and just over an hour from Banff. Top attractions are the Calgary Zoo, Calaway Amusement Park, and Heritage Park, which features the thrill of a stagecoach robbery, turn of the century shopping, old fashioned homemade ice cream, and a paddle wheeler boat cruise. Jasper and Banff Alberta’s mountain parks, Jasper and Banff, are the jewels in the crown of Canada’s national parks system, with some of the world’s most breathtaking natural scenery. Jasper is only seven hours from Cold Lake, and well worth the drive. Towering snowcapped peaks, rushing streams and natural hot springs are among the attractions. The wildlife viewing is equally exciting: elk, moose, deer, Rocky Mountain sheep and both grizzly and black bears are often seen from the highway. The Jasper town site offers unique shops and restaurants and can serve as a headquarters for activities including camping, golf, biking, whitewater rafting, fishing and horseback riding. From Jasper it’s a spectacular four-hour trip south to Banff. Scenic stops along the way to Banff National Park include Lake Louise and the Columbia ice fields. The Town of Banff it is also seven hours direct from Cold Lake and offers more shopping, restaurants and bars. The castle-like Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel is a luxurious icon of Canada’s railroad history, and the world-famous Banff Centre offers music and other live arts performances.
Drumheller Approximately five and one half hours south-west of Cold Lake, and one and one half hours outside of Calgary, in the heart of the Canadian Badlands, the Drumheller Valley offers visitors a unique combination of spectacular scenery and interesting things to do. Rolling hills suddenly give way to steep, dry coulees ridged with the strata of thousands of years of erosion caused by wind, water and time. The spectacular Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology, one of the largest paleontological museums in the world, is found in the heart of the Valley along the North Dinosaur Trail (Hwy 838).
