October 1, 2023 - October 7, 2023

Fore more than 100 years, 4-H has inspired families, shaped careers, and impacted communities. From October 1-7, join the celebration of the impact of 4-H during National 4-H Week. The theme of this year’s National 4-H Week is “I ♥ 4-H.” As you plan ahead for how you will mark National 4-H Week in your community, here are some ideas of you can celebrate 4-H and show all the ways you ♥ 4-H !

Wear Your 4-H Gear - Nothing says 4-H pride like a 4-H tee! Dress yourself (or the entire family – pets included!) in 4-H green and clover gear.

Shout-Out a 4-H’er - Recognize the hard work and dedication of 4-H’ers by shouting out one youth or an entire club on social media, in a local newspaper or other media.

Storefront Displays/Information Booths - In some communities, you can ask local businesses to display 4-H posters, flyers, showcase the work of 4-H'ers, or host a table to share information about your local 4-H program.

Become a 4-H Volunteer -If you are a 4-H alum, parent or recent 4-H ‘graduate’, you might be looking for ways to connect with 4-H. Consider giving your time to a local 4-H program by becoming a volunteer.

Share Your 4-H Story - Take to social media to share a 4-H memory, express how 4-H shaped who you are today, describe what 4-H means to you, post an old 4-H photo, or shout-out your 4-H club.

Send a 4-H ‘Thank You’ - We all have a reason to thank our local 4-H staff, leaders and supporters. To show your appreciation, send a handwritten ‘thank you’ note to someone who has supported youth and made a difference.

Give Back - Local programs are always looking for resources to continue growing 4-H for the future. Help programs thrive by making a donation that can help support your county 4-H program.

Zions Bank Marks 150 Years

In October 1873, at the height of one of the worst banking crises in U.S. history, a pioneer savings bank opened in the Utah Territory. Earlier that year, pioneer leader Brigham Young had become concerned about financial panic sweeping the nation and gathered a group of prominent citizens to organize a savings bank.

Over the next 150 years, Zion's Savings Bank and Trust Company, its name eventually shortened to Zions Bank, would go on to serve the financial needs of businesses and individuals across the Intermountain West. Zions Bank began operating in Gooding in 1997, when it acquired a branch from Wells Fargo.

Commemorating Zions Bank's 150th anniversary, the Gooding branch will host a community celebration on Monday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The public is invited to drop by the branch, located at 502 Main Street, for complimentary refreshments, giveaways and the opportunity to visit with members of the community.

"We're proud to be part of Zions Bank's 150-year legacy of local banking and celebrate this important milestone with the Gooding community," said Aaron Geurts, manager of the Gooding branch. "It's really a celebration of our entire community working together to enhance the quality of life and strengthen our business environment."

Zions Bank is hosting community celebrations at each of its 121 branches in October. Earlier this year, the bank dispatched a fleet of Zions Bank Jeeps across its tristate footprint and rolled out celebratory drone shows at sporting, music and community events in honor of the anniversary.

Over the past 150 years, Zions Bank has played a pivotal role in the economic development of the Intermountain West. In the late 19th century, financial assistance from Zions Bank helped launch railroad, mining, and power companies that developed the region.

In 1960, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sold majority control of Zions First National Bank to Keystone Insurance and Investment Company, which later became Zions Bancorporation. Following the sale, the bank underwent a period of rapid expansion,

Gooding Middle School

Student-Athletes of the Month

Gooding Middle School has recently began an effort to recognize and honor the hard work, dedication, and integrity of GMS’ student athletes. Athletes are nominated by their coaches, teachers, and GMS staff based on the following criteria:

Sportsmanship

(respect for coaches, officials, opponents, teammates)

Character (playing by the rules, honesty, integrity, on and off the field/court)

Commitment to improvement

Team First attitude

Perseverance (overcoming challenges)

Achievement in sport

Community Service and School involvement

Academic grit (2.5 GPA)

Winners are selected based on a final selection from the athletic director and principal of GMS. An athlete may only win the award once per school year. One female and one male athlete will be recognized each month. Monthly winners will be recognized in the local newspaper and given a certificate of achievement.

My Librarian

GMS winners for the month of August are Olivia Rogers (8th grade) and Ezra Gillette (8th grade). Olivia competes in cross country, basketball, and track. Ezra plays football, wrestles, and soccer.

My librarian is the best! Her name is Mrs. Miller and her favorite book is about Annie Oakley. The reason she is my favorite teacher is because she is super nice and cares a lot for kids. That's why she likes to be a librarian. She also loves books! When the kids are quiet and doing their work the next time they come to the library they will have center time!

Center time is when Mrs. Miller will put out different types of STEM toys for the kids to play with. Kind of like a reward. Mrs. Miller loves to read books to us; her favorite thing to read to us is The Giving Tree.

The reason she chose the librarian position is to be able to be with all the kids in the elementary. Sadly, she is retiring this fall and she will miss us a bunch. She will help you if you get confused or hurt! Some fun facts about Miller are that her favorite food is scalloped potatoes, her favorite drink is orange soda, and she loves brownies! She is the best librarian ever and we will miss her. Thank you for all of your kindness, we appreciate you!

Cup of Tee

© Throughout the years, many of Idaho's farms have gone by the wayside. Houses and businesses have filled their places. Even with that said, Idaho is an agricultural state with a variety of crops that have to be harvested (brought to their destination).

During harvest there are numerous trucks doing their job, especially in the late summer and fall. I was able to talk to one of the harvest trucks the other day for some insider information.

How long have you been on the job? "Tee, are you talking about today or in years of service? Today I have already been on the job for 12 hours. This is my 15th year in service. Some of my friends have been on the job for 40 years, while others are rookies with 10 years or less."

Are you specific to one job? "None of us trucks are usually that lucky. We wear many hats. A good share of us go through 6 to 8 different harvest hauls. Some of the products we do 3 to 4 times a year."

Do you get a lot of rest? "During harvest we are running around the clock. Mother Nature has its own schedule. For the most part my oil is still warm when my human checks it in the morning. I haven't had time to cool down from work the day before."

What is it that you like the least about your work? "I like to work but sometimes I'm overloaded due to the heavy schedule we are on. That makes it hard to turn corners."

"Sometimes the driver doesn't see an underlying condition and I am slammed into a pivot track, ditch,

hole, wet spot, or other equipment operators run into me. Then there comes the pulling and jerking motion to get me out."

"Dust is never good. We are up to our chassis's in dust and by the end of the day I can hardly breathe. Sometime the driver doesn't clean my filters as good as they should."

"With the loads and conditions, a flat tire is never good, especially an insider flat no one notices. The flats make our lives a lot harder to properly carry the loads."

"Side hill operations are a little stressful. They make you feel like you are going to tip over."

"Some drivers aren't real good at my transmission shifting process. When loaded, it puts a real bind on other truck functions."

What are some words of advice you might give to the general public? "Well Tee, we are working hard to do Idaho's harvest. Be patient and don't get in a hurry. We turn often. Look ahead and be aware of us turning, and stay back a few feet. That will help you avoid windshield damage. In general, drive defensively."

This is my "Cup of Tee" with harvest.

Kenneth Edwin Cox

Kenneth Edwin Cox was born on January 2, 1950, the first child of Donald and Doris (Hobdey) Cox of Fairfield.

Ken passed away on September 8, 2023, at the age of 73, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his siblings and children who will continue to honor him by living their lives to the fullest.

Ken was raised in Fairfield and graduated from Camas County High School in 1969. With a passion for the mountains and trucks, Ken spent his senior year taking that final class he needed to graduate and standing on the street waiting for the next logging truck coming to the sawmill so he could catch a ride to work in the hills. This passion continued after graduation when he moved to Oregon to work in the logging industry.

When the spotted owl controversy hit Oregon, he packed up and moved to Orcas Island, Washington, to use his talents of selective logging to build homesites. On Orcas Island, Ken became interested in flying, earning his pilot’s license and buying his plane. Flying on and off the island supplied easy access to the mainland.

Ken was drawn back to the Camas Prairie in the early 2000’s to be closer to his aging parents. He continued with trucking

and building roads and homesites, adding many talents to his resume.

Whether logging, hauling rock and building roads, flying his airplane, participating in antique tractor pulls, moving snow, driving snowcat trips on Soldier Mountain, taking care of deceased pets, pulling snow-bound vehicles back to safety, drilling wells, farming, carrying anything from livestock to houses, working for Tim Wilkerson’s Nitro Funny Car Team, lending a hand to a neighbor, or hitching up his team of Haflinger horses. Ken lived his life to the fullest.

Ken is survived by his brothers - Gary (Carma) Cox of Kuna and Steve (Bobbie) Cox of Fairfield; and sister - Janet (Matt) Croner of Fairfield; his sons - Jason (Laura) Evans of Roseburg, Oregon, and Justin (Jenny) Cox of Fairfield; his daughters - Jenae (Steve) Brand of Roseburg, Oregon and Tracy (Jim) Roden of Millersburg, Oregon.
