How the Bean Twisted Her Scissors
After working a multitude of different jobs and having two kids, Darlena Owens decided to go to beauty school. Nothing unusual about that except she was nearly twice as old as her fellow students. Of course, a little maturity can be a big advantage after graduation, when it comes to setting up a business. Last month, Darlena opened a hair salon at 120 State Street in Hagerman. She has gone through life with her friends calling her “Bean”. So... it was only natural to use her nickname for her business - Bean’s Twisted Scissors. She cuts and styles hair for men, women and children, as well as doing eye lashes and waxing. The salon is open for appointments six days a week. Just call 208-837-6603. She also welcomes walk-in.
Musher Girls Soccer Team Remain Unbeaten
The Musher 5th and 6th grade girls soccer team continued their winning ways notching a 6 nil victory over the Ketchum Sea Otters. Phoenix Ferraro got the team on the board early with a strong run and finish then made a nice assist to Gigi Weber shortly following to put the team up 2 nil. Gigi got another goal in the second half, while Charlie Lee, Kenley Olsen and Hannah Swenson knocked in one goal each. The 3rd and 4th grade team had a rough day, losing 6-2 in their season opener. The young team got down 4-nil in the first half. A few on field adjustments lead to a really competitive second half as Ivy Ashmead refused to be denied her first goal of the season. Defender Jasmin Garcia took control of the game, logging a second goal for the team. New goal tender Emerie Smith showed great promise with an outstanding second half performance. Thursday night’s football games brought a win and a loss for Gooding and Richfield. At 6pm during the Richfield Tigers home game against the Carey JV Panthers, the Panthers crushed the Tigers 52-12 while the Gooding Senators pummeled the Payette Pirates unopposed at the Senators home game 70-0. Friday night’s game brought out the drama starting with the Dietrich Blue Devils winning 48-20 against the Castleford Wolves. The Wendell Trojans traveled to Filer only to be defeated 8-54 against the Filer Wildcats. The Hagerman Pirates upset the Hansen Huskies 58-41 at the Huskies home game Ending Friday night’s game, the Shoshone Indians suffered defeat 0-52 against their opponents the Horseshoe Bend Mustangs. In power rankings, the Pirates to date, have two conference wins, three conference losses, two wins, three losses, and zero ties leaving a power ranking of 0.17. The Camas County Mushers have a ranking of 14.67 with two conference wins, one conference loss, two wins, one loss, and zero ties. The Indians rank in at 15.67 with zero conference wins and losses, one win, three losses, and zero ties. With a power ranking of 40.67, the Blue Devils have had two conference wins, one conference loss, four wins, one loss, and zero ties. Having zero conference wins and losses, the Senators ranked at 42.33 with four wins, three losses, and zero ties. The Senators ranked number four in the Coaches Poll for Week Four in the top five with 3-1 for the win-loss record, 32 points in the poll, and ranking number four in the prior week’s poll. The Blue Devils ranked five in the top five with 3-1 for the win-loss record and 17 points in the poll. In Volleyball, the Camas County Mushers fell to the Hansen Huskies on Tuesday, September 18, at their home game in Fairfield. During the Dietrich Blue Devils home game, their opponents the Richfield Tigers, lost to the Blue Devils 0-3. The Hagerman Pirates felt defeat as well against the Castleford Wolves 2-3. Completing Tuesday night’s games, the Shoshone Indians defeated the Valley Vikings 3-0. Wednesday’s games revealed back to back defeats for the Wendell Trojans against the American Falls Beavers 1-2 and the Raft River Trojans 1-2. Camas County has an opening for an Adult Misdemeanor Probation Officer (AMPO). If you are interested in this position, apply at the Courthouse. Applications will be accepted through October 19th. Conservation District Needs Board Supervisor
The Camas Conservation District has an opening for a board supervisor. This position will fill the term vacated by Bill Davis until 2020. The CCD board will appoint a new supervisor to fill this position, which is non-salaried and by election every four years. Meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Dear Editor: Is Prop 2 Right For Idaho?
In this November’s election, we have an important initiative on the ballot: Proposition Two, advocating for Medicaid expansion in Idaho. What does this Proposition call for? It expands the existing Medicaid program to 100% taxpayerfunded “free” medical care to healthy able-bodied adults up to age 65 whose income is 133% of the federal poverty level or below and who are not eligible for other state insurance coverage. While health care for all Idahoans is important there are a number of serious issues with Prop 2. 1) It has no pathway for funding. Unlike other states like UT and MT who have identified tax increases, Idaho’s Prop 2 does not. The Milliman Report estimates a 105 million dollar increase in spending for this expansion for Idaho over 10 years. Thats after all the “savings” that the proponents are claiming and the Federal support of 4.6 billion. 2) The Feds are currently paying 90% and states that have enrolled are paying 10%. That agreement is through 2020. Who knows what happens after that. Once you start the program it will be really hard to say “sorry” and reverse the train. You own it. 3) All 33 states that have expanded Medicaid coverage to cover “able bodied” individuals have found they grossly underestimated the number of enrollees. In many cases it doubled what was expected. Medicaid was NEVER meant to cover people able to work. Currently it covers; Children who meet a % of Federal Poverty Level (FPL), Pregnant women: up to 133% of FPL, Parents: 20% of FPL, Disabled adults needing long term care. Why are we adding “able bodied” childless adults? 4) This expansion is going to create yet another source of the Government “Dole”. More big government, nanny state politics and a false platform for some politicians to champion. Despite what you may hear, the Idaho State Legislature is trying to address this issue. A proposal is being floated to move some of the worst cases to Medicaid, and encourage “able bodied” people to work so they can be accepted by the ACA. Antonio Silveira
Antonio Silveira, 65 of Wendell, Idaho, died September 13, 2018 at his home. Antonio was born on February 8, 1953 in Sao Jorge, Azores, the son of Manuel and Maria Rosario Silveira. He made his home in Wendell where he had his farm. Funeral service were held on Friday, September 21, 2018 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Wendell. Burial followed at the Wendell Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service - Wendell Chapel.
Virginia Underwood-Stacey
Virginia Lee Gisler Underwood-Stacey passed on August 29, 2018, at the age of 82 years, at her home in Wendell, Idaho, surrounded by her family. Virginia was born in Wendell to Ruth Williams Gisler and Erskine “Erk” Gisler on January 28, 1936. She graduated from Wendell High School in 1954. She married Stanley E. Underwood on October 2, 1955. They were blessed with three daughters, Ruth Serene King, Deborah Susan Coffel, and Victoria Lee Pavkov. Stan passed in 1992. In 1998 she married Robert W. Stacey of Wendell. He passed in 2002. She will be sadly missed by her children, Ruth (Jeff) of Eagle, Idaho; Deborah (David) of Jerome, Idaho, and Victoria of Gooding, Idaho; her grandchildren, Christopher King, Jason King, Nicole Mortensen, Tammy Robinson, Cari Eskridge, Travis Coffel, Vicki Jo Cuevas and Benjamin James; and her many great and great-great-grandchildren. It is with great sorrow of heart that we say goodbye to a beloved husband, father, grandfather and faithful friend. On September 14, 2018, after a courageous and valiant fight against cancer that lasted six years, Glenn Patrick Funkhouser left this life to begin a new one in heaven. Pat entered this world on November 16, 1945, in Salmon, Idaho, the second child of Mix and Wilma Funkhouser. Shortly thereafter, he and the family moved to Fairfield and it was there on the Camas Prairie that he would live out the rest of his days on this earth. Pat’s early years were filled with great adventures – he often recounted these at family gatherings – and he developed strong bonds with his two brothers and three sisters, that continued into their adult lives. Some of Pat’s fondest childhood memories included the summers he raised chickens and geese at the Barron Ranch as well as the summers he spent living in cow camps. When the rest of the family moved to Gooding in 1961, Joe and Merdie McCarter offered Pat and his older brother Mike a job and a bunkhouse to stay in for their remaining years of high school at Camas County. These were important years because it was during this time that he fell in love with Connie Williams. They exchanged vows on August 20, 1964, put down roots at Corral Creek at the base of the beautiful Soldier Mountain, and remained faithful to each other for the next 54 years. Their happy marriage produced two children, Lonnie Guy and Mindy Michele. Pat worked for The Wes Fields Ranch for many years. He also worked a few years for Joe McCarter after Wes sold the ranch. He was elected as a very young County Commissioner and served for 6 years. Later he was employed as Camas County Road and Bridge supervisor for 25 years. Pat served 10 years on the Camas County Fair Board and served on the Cemetery Board. Pat’s great grandfather, A.C. Funkhouser, was one of the first settlers to homestead in the Mackay-Challis area in 1875. It was A.C. who first had the Diamond F brand officially documented and registered in 1914. The Diamond F brand as well as A.C.’s love for all things cattle were passed down to Pat and he eventually came to have a ranch of his own – Funkhouser Cattle. Running a small ranch and being a full-time county road boss did not satisfy Pat’s drive to work, so he started a custom hay stacking operation – Funkhouser Stacking – with his son Lonnie. Even with this workload, Pat and Connie always made time to attend 4-H activities, choir concerts, music recitals, and sporting events with their kids and grandkids. We remember Pat as one that never knew a stranger, a man who worked tirelessly, a father who always had an encouraging word, a loyal husband who faithfully provided, a grandfather who adored every one of his grandkids, a friend who could be counted on for anything. Pat was preceded in death by his Parents, Mix & Wilma Funkhouser, Sisters: Sue Curtis and Renae Reay, and Grandson Patrick Robert Rudkin. Pat is survived by: Lonnie Funkhouser, (Donna) Austin and, Sammy; Mindy Rudkin (Shawn) Madison, Jackson, Davis, Lincoln McKinley and Morgan; Sister, Bobi Wentworth (Tom); Brothers, Mike Funkhouser (LaPriel) and Monte Funkhouser (Sherry); and many nieces and nephews. Pat’s Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, September 29th, at 10:30 am. in the Camas County High School Gym. There will be a viewing on Friday, September 28th, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Demaray’s Gooding Chapel. Donations in Pat’s honor may be made to the Camas County Senior Center or the Camas County School.

The Blue Devils didn’t share the same fate, losing to the Lighthouse Christian Lions 0-3. In power rankings, the Senators rank 77 with three conference wins, one conference loss, six wins, one loss, and zero ties. Additional Hearings Scheduled On 129,000-Pound Truck Route Applications For U.S. 93, Idaho 75
Additional public hearings will be held in early October to take comments on applications to allow trucks weighing up to 129,000 pounds on sections of Idaho 75, U.S. 93, and the U.S. 93 Business Loop. These shipments are reducible, meaning cargo or goods can be removed to make a shipment lighter. Hearings were held in early September on the same route applications. The additional hearings have been scheduled to clarify that the route application for U.S. 93 includes portions of the U.S. 93 Business Loop, and to ensure stakeholders such as city councils and highway districts have the opportunity to comment. The hearing for the Idaho 75 application will be Tuesday (Oct. 2) from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Community Campus in the Minnie Moore Room, 1050 Fox Acres Road, Hailey. The hearing for the U.S. 93 application will be in Twin Falls on Thursday (Oct. 4) from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Twin Falls City Hall, 203 Main Avenue E., Twin Falls. Comments will be taken on an application to allow trucks weighing up to 129,000 pounds on Idaho 75 from its intersection with U.S. 26/93 in Shoshone to Airport Way in Hailey (Milepost 73.6 to 115.9). Comments also will be taken on an application to allow trucks weighing up to 129,000 pounds on the U.S. 93 Business Loop – from the intersection of Blue Lakes Boulevard and Addison Avenue (North Five Points) in Twin Falls to the U.S. 93 junction with Idaho 25 near Jerome (Milepost 47.4 to 58.8). At both hearings, there will be an opportunity to give verbal or written testimony.
