Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer diagnosed in men, and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men, after lung cancer.

The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It is about the size of a walnut and surrounds part of the urethra (the tube that empties urine from the bladder). The prostate gland produces fluid that makes up part of semen.

According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), almost all prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas (cancers that begin in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids). Prostate cancer often has no early symptoms. Advanced prostate cancer can cause men to urinate more often or have a weaker flow of urine, but these symptoms can also be caused by benign prostate conditions.

Because of effective screening options for prostate cancer, the disease is often caught before it spreads, and as a whole, survival rates are good for this type of cancer.

The NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program estimates that more than 868,300 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 34,700 men are expected to die of the disease in 2023.

Prostate cancer is more common in older men. It is more likely to occur in men with a family history of prostate cancer and in men of African-American descent. Other risk factors include smoking, being overweight, and not getting enough exercise. In the United States, about 11 percent of men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point during their lifetimes.

African-American men continue to have the highest death rate for prostate cancer of any racial or ethnic group in the United States. In the period 2015-2019, Black men were twice as likely to die from prostate cancer as white men. Scientists believe the disparity stems from both genetic and socioeconomic factors.

Choices about screening and treatment for early-stage prostate cancer are complex and largely personal, according to an article in Cancer Today magazine. Talk to your healthcare provider to see what the best options are for you.

Cup of Tee

© I invited a group of friends over to watch a suspense filled love story with highlights of comedy. As everyone was standing enjoying hors d'oeuvre, I asked, "Does everyone know everyone here?" That would be a good host thing for me to ask, I thought. It would be a good time to make introductions. Everyone seemed to know the ones in the room except two guests. One guest said, "Tee, I have seen those two for years, everywhere I have been, but I guess I don't really know their names. I'm sorry." Others agreed.

"Colleen," I said, "Would you introduce the two faces near the wall to the crowd?" She said, "I would be honored. Their names are Sock and Bustin." The crowd apologized to Sock and Bustin for not knowing their names because no one had ever taken the time to properly introduce them at any public meeting.

Sock and Bustin were Greek by origin and "greek" to many. They are the face symbols of theatre depicting comedy and tragedy. The smiling mask (Thalia) represents comedy and the crying mask (Melpomene) represents tragedy. Together, they depict a wide range of human experiences. They are a couple of the Greek muses (deities who are the inspiration for artists and musicians).

Most speaking plays were done by a three actor cast. They used masks and wigs to create characters at a time when women weren't allowed to act. With

masks men could play female roles. The masks had vibrant colors to be seen at a distance. As time went on, makeup replace the mask and women did acting roles under cover.

The Buskin was a type of boot worn by actors. These were a high heeled type of boot to make actors look taller. Tragic actors wore the Buskin which gave the audience the feeling that tragedy was larger than life.

The soccus or sock was a thin low cut shoe similar to a slipper. Comedic actors wore the sock. No matter how small the actor looked, comedy would lighten the heart.

When shows and carnivals traveled from town to town they would have someone outside vocally announcing to the crowd, "Get your tickets now, to see this fine show." They were called Buskers because they wore the buskin type shoes to add to the attention getting of the crowd.

The next time you see the faces of Sock and Buskin, go over and introduce yourself. People may wonder about you, but they won't be strangers in the corner.

She trained and worked many years as a Medical Assistant and was deeply fulfilled by taking care of others, having the opportunity to work with families and helping in the delivery of many babies, which brought her much joy. She spent numerous years caring for her aging parents and moved several times to help her older daughters through their husbands' military deployments.

She was a faithful Jehovah's Witness and spent countless hours serving in ministry with her brothers and sisters of the church.

Mary was a vibrant, classy, and beautiful woman who always dressed elegantly, appreciating stylish hats, shoes and handbags. She loved Elvis, finding a good brunch place, the perfect shade of lipstick, and traveling on many memorable trips with her sisters and children. She enjoyed connecting with family and friends by hosting celebrations, cooking and eating good meals (including well-made desserts), and telling a good story – her humor was impeccable, her voice was loud, and her laugh was contagious. She experienced love and loss many times but navigated through those moments with strength, resiliency and grace that she modeled for her daughters. She took great pride in her appearance, her surroundings, and her family.

She is survived by her three daughters - LaDawn (Jeff) Kissler, Sandra Rue, and Candace (Kevin) Jensen; her nine grandchildren - Zac, Sam, Tanner, Jeremiah, Ally, Sophi, Amelia, Bella, and Jonathan; and two great-grandchildren, Ryder and Aella.

She is preceded in death by her parents David and Elizabeth, brother Samuel, sister Rose, and granddaughter Savanna.

A viewing will be held on the morning of Saturday, September 16 at Demaray Funeral Chapel, 164 E. Main St., Wendell, from 10 to 11 a.m. Graveside services will be held at Jerome Cemetery as well as via Zoom beginning at 1:00 p.m. MST. (meeting ID: 983 066 2060, password: 562714).

Ed Brown

Ed Brown saddled his colt and swung his leg over gently for one last circle. On the far side of the sagebrush sea, he rode over the river Jordan, split reins in hand.

Ed passed from this life at St. Luke's Medical Center in Twin Falls on September 2, 2023 at the age of 81, surrounded by his four children and his wife of 59 years.

He was born on June 7, 1942 in Twin Falls and raised south of Kimberly, on the family farm and ranch. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cowboying and his siblings. Many adventures in the South Hills and around the ranch.

After graduating from Kimberly High School, Ed furthered his education in Moscow, Idaho. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Animal Husbandry and an Associates in Business. He graduated from the University of Idaho in 1964. While attending college he met Clarissa Brodhead at roping practice. The two fell in love and married in July 31, 1964 in Dayton, Washington shortly after he graduated.

Ed worked as a loan officer for National Bank of Commerce in Kennewick and Newport, Washington. Their first son – Devin was born in Newport in 1965. Soon after, Ed began work with his father-in-law –Dwight Brodhead, building the Northwest Roping School. While in the Tri-Cities area their second son – Destry was born in 1966. After a short time working at the Gooding County Extension Office, Ed took a job working for J.R. Simplot managing the highland stables – renting horses, riding and roping lessons. Lots of laughs and stories of horses out smarting people and returning to the stables without a rider.

On May 14, 1969 in a rodeo arena, he was born again.

Ed and Clarissa's only daughter – Deann was born in 1969. In 1973 Ed moved the family to Murtaugh to work for Howard Conrad Ranches. Ed took care of the commercial cow herd, trained colts and showed at AQHA shows. He enjoyed learning the AQHA pedigree lines, and learning the varied show disciplines. He helped earn points on several stallions and mares in halter, reining and working cow-horse. He also enjoyed cow cutting.

From taking care of someone else's cows. Ed decided to buy his own place. In 1978 Ed and Clarissa purchased a ranch on the banks of Thorn Creek. He paid for the down payment with an IOU and his signature on a napkin.

Four years later in 1982 their third son – Brian was born. Ed dedicated his life to self-sacrifice and hard-work of any kind needed to raise his four children and keep the ranch afloat. In this time, he coached many kids to High School Rodeo championships, horse show and rodeo queen contest winners. Ed and Clarissa worked hard to raise Godly children, 4-H Club calves and a profitable cow herd. Ed was inducted into the Southern Idaho Livestock Hall of Fame.

His proudest achievement is that all four of his children know Jesus as their Lord and Savior and to follow him as best they can by his example.

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6

Ed is survived by: his wife – Clarissa Brown of Gooding; three sons – Devin (Jeri) Brown of Bliss, Destry (Cami) Brown of Oshkosh, Nebraska and Brian Brown of St. John, Washington; one daughter – Deann Kehrer of St. John, Washington; two sisters – Freida Brown and Sandra (Allen) Riksem, all of Boise; thirteen grandchildren and sixteen grandchildren – and one on the way.

He was preceded in death by: his father and mother; and one brother – Wallace Brown.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at 1 p.m. at Desert Hills Church of the Nazarene in Gooding. A private family inurnment will take place at the Elmwood Cemetery in Gooding.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Ed's name to: Desert Hills Church of the Nazarene 129 6th Ave. West Gooding, Idaho 83330 or to: Gooding Cowboy Church c/o Out West Bible Church 5775 North 25 East Idaho Falls, Idaho 83401.

Simpson, Crapo & Risch Announce Upcoming Senior Center Outreach Dates

Congressman Mike Simpson and Idaho Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch announced upcoming senior center outreach opportunities throughout September and October 2023. For senior center outreach, district staff from Simpson's, Crapo's, and Risch's offices will travel throughout Idaho and meet with constituents at senior centers to answer questions and address specific needs.

"Senior center outreach is a wonderful opportunity to expand accessibility to seniors across the state," said Rep. Simpson. "Not all of my constituents can leave their homes and connect with staff from my district offices, which is why Senators Crapo and Risch and I are bringing these services directly to them."

"Ensuring Idaho's senior citizens have access to federal resources is a priority," said Sen. Crapo. "I am committed to bringing the information to them and sharing details about federal programs with which my office may be able to assist."

"Bureaucratic chaos and red tape prevents Idahoans from accessing the critical resources they need. My staff is here to help answer questions and navigate challenges involving the federal government. The Idaho delegation's Senior Center Outreach Days presents a great opportunity to visit with my staff in person about issues you face," said Sen. Risch.

obituary

Bonnie Aileen Wendel

Bonnie Aileen Wendel went to be with the Lord August 28, 2023. She was born in Kerrville, Texas January 28, 1931.

Bonnie met Lew, her husband, in San Antonio, Texas while he was in the U.S. Air Force and they married in 1956. While Lew was in the Air Force, they lived in San Antonio, TX, Panama, and Anchorage, AK until Lew retired. In 1984 they moved back to Boerne, Tx. In 1998 they took a trip to Idaho to visit their son "Buddy" and they fell in love with the area, so much that, in 2000, they moved to Wendell, Idaho.

Bonnie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother to us all. She was a faithful Christian woman who loved going to church and bible study. She enjoyed volunteering for different community events. She was loved by her family and friends. She will be missed dearly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Sylvester Wendel; and her son, John Paul Wendel. She is survived by her son, Victor Wendel and wife Janet; her son, Lewis "Buddy" Wendel; her granddaughters, Michelle Fabry, Stephanie Mosbey, Lindsey Hudspeth, Joni Griggs, Caty Garcia and several great-grandchildren.

Bonnie's ashes will be placed next to her husband's in the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Eagle, Idaho on September 21, 2023, reunited once again.

Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on Bonnie's memorial webpage at www.farnsworthmortuary.com
