Annual Lost N Lava Cowboy Gathering Defeats for District IV

This Friday and Saturday, the Annual Lost N Lava Cowboy Gathering begins in Shoshone at the Lincoln County Community Center and Fairgrounds.

Free Day Shows will begin at 10:00. Evening Concerts begin at 7:00 pm with a pre-show beginning at 6:15 pm. Reserved Tickets are $25.00 per night and General Admission tickets are $20.00 each night or $35.00 for both nights.

SPOTLIGHT: Andy Hedges is a songster, reciter and storyteller that comes from Lubbock, Texas. Andy has a varied repertoire that includes classic cowboy poetry recitations, obscure cowboy songs, dust bowl ballads, and blues. Andy has released nine albums including four joint projects with songwriter Andy Wilkinson. Andy is a National Cowboy Poetry Gathering regular and has performed with Waddie Mitchell, Michael Martin Murphy, Don Edwards, Randy Rieman, “Ramblin” Jack Elliot and many more.

SPOTLIGHT: Thatch Elmer has been reciting Cowboy Poetry since he was old enough to speak a complete sentence. At 13-yearsold, Thatch enjoys writing and reciting originals along with reciting the classics. Thatch is a Co-Recipient of the First annual “Rod McQueary/Sue Wallis” scholarship award which was presented to him at the 2014 National Cowboy Poetry Gathering (NCPG) in Elko Nevada. In 2015 he was an invited and featured Poet at the NCPG, and returned in 2016 as an invited and featured Entertainer. Thatch is also a published poet on Cowboypoetry.com and in the book “Cowboy Rhymes-N-Dreams of Other Times”, to be Cowboy Poetry titled “The First Go Round”.

Friday night’s football games revealed crushing defeats for District IV. The Camas County Mushers stood off against the Carey Panthers on Friday, September 7 at Dona Larsen Park.

The Panthers blew through the Mushers 44-0. The Hagerman Pirates didn’t fair any better against the Lighthouse Christian Lions with a score of 8-44 while the Rockland Bulldogs crushed the Shoshone Indians during the Indians home game ending with a score of 12-40. The Gooding Senators traveled to the Fruitland Grizzlies home turf only to be defeated with a score of 19-41. The Wendell Trojans faced off against the Malad Dragons ending in a crushing defeat of 19-44. The Murtaugh Red Devils pummeled the Dietrich Blue Devils winning 42-14 while the Richfeild Tigers suffered a loss against the Castleford Wolves 18-56 at the Tigers home game.

On Tuesday, September 4, the high school girls volleyball teams paired off with the Senators defeating the Kimberly Bulldogs with a win of 3-0. The Blue Devils suffered defeat during both Tuesday’s and Thursday’s matches with a defeat of 2-3 with the Castleford Wolves and 0-3 against the Hansen Huskies. The Pirates followed the Blue Devils trend during the Pirates home game against the Huskies losing 1-3 on Tuesday. The Pirates continued the losses on Thursday’s match with the Shoshone Indians coming in at 23. The Indians also defeated the Raft River Trojans with a win of 3-0 on their own turf. The Camas County Mushers traveled to the Community School Cutthroats on Tuesday and suffered a defeat by the Cutthroats 0-3. The Wendell Trojans suffered the same crushing defeat during their home game against the Filer Wildcats during Thursday’s match of 0-3.

During Tuesday’s match at Sun Valley Community School, the boys soccer team, the Senators, were defeated by the Cutthroats in a match of 6-2. The Senators suffered yet another defeat on Wednesday against the Wendell Trojans in a match of 0-3 while the Bliss Bears crushed the Kimberly Bulldogs in a match of 8-0.

In girls soccer, the Senators were taken by the Cutthroats in a match of 0-9 on Tuesday at the Senators home turf. The Wendell Trojans defeated the Senators on Wednesdays match with a score of 4-0 while the Bulldogs stomped the Bears with a win of 6-0 during Wednesday night’s match in Bliss.

Let’s Talk About It and Thank You

The first “Let’s Talk About It” reading program for this season is Monday, September 17th at 6 p.m. The book being read and discussed is Chocolat written

by Joanne Harris. Books can still be checked out at the Camas County Public Library. The public is invited to attend the program and enjoy refreshments.

The Camas County Public Library Board of Trustees would like to thank Carol Reagan for writing the grant for Let’s Talk About It (2018-19) and finding two partners to help support the program. They are The Camas County School District and The Camas Chamber of Commerce. Thanks goes to Nathan Whittle and Ed Reagan for writing great letters of support to The Idaho Commission for Libraries.

On Sunday, September 2nd, a fire was discovered in Ron Chapman’s shop next to his home. Thanks the quick response by the Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department, the fire successfully taken care of.

New Library Building In Hagerman

Thanks to generous donations and excellent fundraising by the library foundation, the Hagerman Library now has new and bigger building. On Monday evening, September 10th, the Hagerman Public Library held a ribbon cutting ceremony at their new location: 441 South State Street Library Director, Geri Omohundro, said the new space will open up more opportunities to serve the community. “We are working on several new programs, for kids and adults. There will be new computers, and as we get settled in, a used book store will help raise funds.” She also added that they will be having a used book sale this weekend at the car show. And don’t forget the Quilt Raffle. Tickets are $1 ea or 6 for $5.

Regular hours for the Hagerman Library are 2 to 5:30 (Tuesday thru Friday) and Saturdays from 10 to 2.

The Camas County Caboose Tourist Information Center hosted an end of the year presentation last week. There were 30 in attendance to listen to how and why Annie Frostenson started making her own small batch handcrafted products.

Annie began her Camas Prairie Company with lotion bars, lip balms and teas, just to name a few of her products that include ingredients grown organically on the Camas Prairie. The Caboose has sold a variety of her items during the summer.

Those in attendance at the presentation were given the opportunity to make their own room freshener including an essential oil that Annie distilled herself. Following the entertaining presentation, a delicious ham lunch was served at the Senior Center.

End of the year statistics for the Caboose season: 28 volunteers welcomed 1,613 visitors from 42 states and 11 countries to Camas County. Debbie Robinson logging 100 hours of volunteer time! Volunteers are needed for next year, let them know if you are interested.

Comment on Proposed Fishing Rules & Fish Management Plan

Idaho Fish and Game is seeking public comments on a new set of proposed fishing rules for 2019, and a new draft of its six-year, statewide Fisheries Management Plan.

Idaho fishing seasons and rules are approved by the Idaho Fish and Game Commission every three years, and the commission is scheduled to set new rules in November. All public comments must be received by October 7th.

Anglers can provide their opinions about the proposed changes by completing online surveys, submitting written comments by email or mail, or by attending regional open houses. Fish and Game will consider all comments before developing final recommendations for the commissioners in November. continued on page 7.....

Stewart Creek Fire

The Stewart Creek Fire northwest of Fairfield is 60% contained and has burned just over 5000 acres. This week, there has been a reduction in crews and resources by almost 50% as most of the danger areas have reached a containment depth of 200 ft. or more.

Three helicopters are expected to be released from the fire today, but aircraft will continue to fly throughout the area to monitor for any spot fires. or areas of active fire behavior. Over the next few weeks islands of unburned trees may ignite and produce smoke on the interior. The northern portion of the fire will likely burn towards the natural barriers of the Soldier Mountains until a season ending event occurs (significant precipitation).

Hunters and recreationists are still being asked to check with the Forest Service before traveling in this area, and to observe all road-closers signs.

Harold Keith Myers

Harold Keith Myers, 75, of Gooding, Idaho, passed away peacefully August 5, 2018.

He was born November 24, 1942 in Gooding, Idaho, to Nina Elaine Maxwell and Harold Melvin Myers. Keith joined his older brother James “Jimmy” Myers. Seven years later, the family would be complete with the birth of Keith’s younger sister, Debra K Myers.

After graduating from Gooding High School in 1961, Keith moved with his mom, dad, and younger sister to Lockwood, Missouri. Keith attended Waylon Baptist College in Texas from 1962-1966 where he graduated with a B.A. in History. In 1967 he joined the Army where he was awarded both a National Defense Service Medal Sharpshooter (Rifle) and Inter Speed Radio Operator awards.

While in the military, Keith was stationed in Germany and enjoyed traveling in Europe.

He wished he had seen more.

Keith worked for some time in San Francisco for the passport department. In June of 1970 Keith began working for the State of Missouri. Keith worked there for 33 year until he retired in 2003. While working there he met three ladies who became his lifelong friends who corresponded through calls, cards, and letters until his last days.

Keith retired to spend more time doing what he loved. Gardening was a pastime he thoroughly enjoyed. Later in 2011 Keith returned to his hometown of Gooding. During the last several years, he made lasting memories with his family and friends. He loved to go on outings with his sister and cousins.

Shortly after his return, his sister began to battle with dementia. Keith was always there to help. Not only did he help his family, he was always there to help others. He enjoyed friendships he formed at the senior center in Gooding where he also volunteered for Saturday breakfast.

Those who were lucky enough to have Keith as a friend knew how blessed they were to know such a humorous, kindhearted, giving person. His kindness and sense of humor will be missed.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Nina Myers; and his nephew, Bart Myers. He is survived by: his siblings, James (Patsy) Myers and Debra Scarlett; his niece, Ashely Duke and nephew, Matt (Jana) Myers; many great nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

We would like to thank all the staff at Bennett Hills who took such wonderful care of him. Especially those who became his friend.

A memorial service to honor Keith was held on Sunday, September 9, 2018, at the Gooding Senior Center.

Vivian Evelyn Harper Pope

Vivian Evelyn Harper Pope passed into the next life on August 30, 2018.

Vivian was born in Pikeville, Wayne County, North Carolina on November 26, 1928. Her parents were William Walter Harper and Alma Aycock Harper. As a young child she lived in Nuhunta, North Carolina where she graduated from high school.

During her high school years, she played a multitude of sports including softball and basketball. As a sophomore she started to drive the school bus. She was the first female to pass the driving test and join five other males in transporting local students.

After high school Vivian attended East Carolina Teacher College before going on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Northwestern States Mission.

After completing her mission, she lived in Salt Lake City with her sister, Lavina.

On December 27, 1954, she married Clive Arden Pope in the Logan Temple. They lived in Wyoming for a few years. In 1961 Vivian and Clive took their growing family to Gooding, Idaho where they raised their children including: Arden, ViAnn, Cole, Donna, Clark, Gail, Verl, and Ryle.

Vivian was proud of her roots in North Carolina and her four sisters and brother. She learned to love Gooding and was always delighted to show visitors the community, the farmland, and the surrounding area. Vivian loved her neighbors and her many friends. She was happiest when she could share vegetables or flowers from her garden.

Vivian was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served the Church in many capacities. Clive and Vivian served a Church mission in 2002.

Vivian’s children are so grateful to extended family, neighbors, friends, health care providers, the Gooding community, and others for their love and kindness.

Funeral services were held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gooding, Idaho on Saturday, September 8, 2018.

Karla Louise McRoberts

Karla Louise McRoberts, age 61, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, September 3, 2018 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Twin Falls, Idaho after a brave battle with cancer.

She was born June 3, 1957 in Twin Falls to Fred and Betty Wright McRoberts and raised in Richfield with her three siblings. She married Kelly Warren September 29, 1973 and had four children. Karla enjoyed bird watching and gardening at her home in Richfield, cooking for family and friends, and sewing—including many home-made toys and two of her daughters’ wedding dresses.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, a sisterin-law, and two brothers-in-law. She is survived by her siblings Karen (Keith) Kennison, Mike (Roberta) McRoberts, Gayle (Gene) Shelley; her children Karla (Robert) Rogers, Mike (Sam) Warren, Betty (Patrick) Jones, Jennifer (Brian) White, and sixteen grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, September 11th, with burial at the Richfield Cemetery.

A reception was held at the Richfield Senior Center.

...Fishing Rules & Fish Management Plan continued

Fish and Game has proposed changes based on new information from biologists, public input, and angler opinion surveys done over the last year. Proposed rule changes are described in each survey, which are broken down by Fish and Game regions (just like the fishing regulations book).

The department is also asking for input from anglers and the public regarding the newly updated draft of the Fisheries Management Plan.

This plan will last from 2019 to 2024 and guides statewide fisheries management priorities, as well as sport fishing and conservation goals.
