NEWS New Sheriff for Camas County
On Tuesday, the Camas County Commissioners appointed Deputy Martin to take over from Sheriff David Sanders who retired from the sheriff's office this past month. Camas County's new Sheriff, Travis Martin, has over fifteen years of service with the county and has been actively involved with 4-H and the Chamber of Commerce. Like his predecessor, you will see him out in the community and on the road working along side the deputies. Dave Sanders entered law enforcement Sheriff Martin swarn in by Commissioner Kramer. in 1993 after a family friend, the Sheriff of Arco, took him aside and offered to let him take a few rides with the deputies. After a few months of riding around, he qualified with his firearm and the sheriff gave him a badge and a spare car. He started working part time - days, nights, weekends - at the age of 20. With the help of the Arco Sheriff, he went on to CSI for a Certification of Law Enforcement. His first job offer was from Sheriff Harold Lee in Camas County and he took it. After Sheriff Lee retired, another sheriff took over but resigned after serving only one year. Dave was appointed in 2001 and was elected to the position in 2004. When Sheriff Sanders started, it was just a two man office with Dave taking shifts and afterhour calls, and the county was prosecuting about 100 cases per year. Over the next 5-10 years, that number jumped to 250. With the extra work load, two more deputies were brought on the force. While Camas County does not have the same problems as bigger communities, Sheriff Sanders has faced his share of high profile case including the murder of a prominent businessman and a large marijuana farm on forest service land. Fighting crime in a small community is not always easy. Sometimes you have to arrest someone you know (or that someone's child), and then face re-election every four years. But, for Sheriff Sanders (and now Sheriff Martin) the most important role of living in a small community is helping others and taking care of Dave Sanders your neighbors. At the end of the day, helping someone with a passes the batton. flat tire or opening a locked door is satisfying... a job well done.
