New Sheriff for Camas County

On Tuesday, the Camas County Commissioners appointed Deputy Martin to take over from Sheriff David Sanders who retired from the sheriff's office this past month.

Camas County's new Sheriff, Travis Martin, has over fifteen years of service with the county and has been actively involved with 4-H and the Chamber of Commerce. Like his predecessor, you will see him out in the community and on the road working along side the deputies.

Dave Sanders entered law enforcement in 1993 after a family friend, the Sheriff of Arco, took him aside and offered to let him take a few rides with the deputies. After a few months of riding around, he qualified with his firearm and the sheriff gave him a badge and a spare car. He started working part time - days, nights, weekends - at the age of 20.

With the help of the Arco Sheriff, he went on to CSI for a Certification of Law Enforcement. His first job offer was from Sheriff Harold Lee in Camas County and he took it. After Sheriff Lee retired, another sheriff took over but resigned after serving only one year. Dave was appointed in 2001 and was elected to the position in 2004.

When Sheriff Sanders started, it was just a two man office with Dave taking shifts and afterhour calls, and the county was prosecuting about 100 cases per year. Over the next 5-10 years, that number jumped to 250. With the extra work load, two more deputies were brought on the force. While Camas County does not have the same problems as bigger communities, Sheriff Sanders has faced his share of high profile case including the murder of a prominent businessman and a large marijuana farm on forest service land.

Fighting crime in a small community is not always easy. Sometimes you have to arrest someone you know (or that someone's child), and then face re-election every four years. But, for Sheriff Sanders (and now Sheriff Martin) the most important role of living in a small community is helping others and taking care of your neighbors. At the end of the day, helping someone with a flat tire or opening a locked door is satisfying... a job well done.

Marciel Pratt Pearson

Marciel Pratt Pearson, 87, known to many as “Ciel”, of Gooding, Idaho, died September 1, 2023, of natural causes. Ciel was born January 24, 1936, in Preston, Idaho, to Idaho and Milton Pratt, joining her sister, Maureen. She grew up in several places in southern Idaho, eventually graduating high school as valedictorian from Kuna High School, having been very active in sports and as an accomplished horsewoman with her family.

In 1954, she married Oscar “Bud” Pearson of Melba. They lived in Jacksonville, Florida, where Bud was stationed as a navy aircraft-carrier pilot. Later they moved to the family farm in Melba, and then to Boise, as Bud missed flying. In the early 60s, they went on an adventure to live in Pakistan with their two small children, Mike and Diane, where Bud ferried personnel and mail on a Kaiser Construction canal-building project 150 miles from Lahore. They lived in a fenced compound, with average temperatures in the 90s and above for most of the year. His pilot colleague was the nephew of the first president of Pakistan, and there were many international employees on the project, so the whole family was exposed to a lot of different cultures and interesting experiences.

In 1965, flying once again led to a move to Gooding, Idaho, and Sun Valley Airlines. Here Marciel honed her house-renovation, quilting, antiquing (hours of stripping, sanding, gluing and refinishing) and stained-glass skills. The 1917 home they renovated, furnished, and filled with interesting and beautiful things has been a wonder to her family and to many visitors over the years, and remained her home for the rest of her life.

While they were still “raising kids,” she also began working part-time at Skinners’ Sewing Shop in Twin Falls, where she always tried to help any customer with a project and also sometimes taught classes.

Over the years, she contributed to the Gooding community, working in the thrift store, hospital auxiliary, and donating her creations to local fundraisers.

Later, in semi-retirement, they bought and renovated a small cabin near Idaho City and spent many years enjoying the scenery and the wildlife during summer visits.

Marciel was preceded in death by her husband, Bud; parents; sister, Maureen (Roy) Logan; and brother, Rendell (Genie) Pratt. She is survived by her children, Mike and Sherry Pearson; and Diane aka Diana Pearson; grandsons, Mark (Alexis) Pearson and their two children; and Ross (Alissa) Pearson; sister-in-law, Genie Pratt; nieces and nephews and their families; plus many “unofficial” family members who know who they are.

Marciel was an avid reader, especially of history, and greatly enjoyed the Gooding Public Library, to which we invite memorial contributions, should you wish, mailed to 306 5th Ave. W., Gooding, Idaho, 83330.

At Ciel’s request, there will be no service, and her cremains will be scattered in a beautiful mountainous place.

Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on Ciel's memorial webpage at www.farnsworthmortuary.com

Cup of Tee

© You have heard of haystacks catching on fire by themselves. It sounds crazy but they do. It is called Spontaneous Combustion.

After hay is mowed and on the ground, the plant still goes through a process called respiration, which is the process whereas the plant is breaking down the sugars for use. During this process the plant takes in carbon dioxide and releases oxygen. The microorganisms (microbes) during feeding, reproducing, and fighting produce heat and moisture.

When the hay is tightly compressed into a bale, the moisture given off by the microbes adds to the hay heating up due to the high heat capacity of moisture.

For a bale to combust, all it needs is heat, fuel and oxygen: heat and oxygen come from the process of respiration, and dry hay is the fuel. Once the temperature reaches 120°, you can have fire. With the added activity of the microbes, the heat inside the bale can quickly reach 140° . At 150° the bale is burning.

Other than hay that may not be below 20% moisture (safe zone), a wet slug of hay or some weeds don't dry at the same rate. This year with out weather, weeds have come on at different rates. They may not dry like the hay due to their composition and thickness.

Hay getting wet multiple times creates mold. As mold grows, it also creates the same conditions as respiration.

Some hay bales combust during transportation. This could be from hot air from the exhaust pipe. It could be from a blown air bag which allows the trailer to ride on the tires creating heat. A blown tire can ignite hay bales as well.

Once a haystack is on fire, the internal temperature is usually way above 500°. This makes the fire hard to put out because water sprayed on it just evaporates. Loaders are usually driven to the haystack area to stack the hay or automatic stackers are used. These machines are usually not there to breakdown the stack when a hay catches on fire.

If you are near a haystack and smell a really musty smell, it may be starting to burn. Advise the farmer. If you see smoke coming from a haystack, advise the farmer and call 911. Haystacks go up in flames pretty quick. If wind is not present, the burning stack create its own wind. Nearby structures may be in danger from burning material being blown on them.

One last thing, a farmer has to wait a long time to receive payment on many crops. The loss of a haystack could be the family's revenue.

This is my "Cup of Tee" with a slow flame.
