Lost n’Lava Cowboy Gathering
This weekend, September 8th - 10th, the Lost N Lava Trail Ride will roll along the trail at the Barney Ranch (West Magic, Idaho). The trail ride will be an adventure for all participants with three days of horseback riding, music around the campfire, authentic western cooking, and plenty of Tall Tales! Next weekend, September 15th & 16th, the Lincoln County fairgrounds will host the 8th Annual Lost n’Lava Cowboy Gathering featuring cowboy music and poetry. Each day will start with a free “Day Show” on the main indoor stage, and open mic sessions outside in the vendor area (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Evening shows will begin at 6:15 with the pre-show and the main concerts will fire up at 7:00. During the day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. come check out the vendors and the Mountain Man Rendezvous. This year’s Lost n’Lava will include a silent auction and a raffle. This year’s raffle item is a Henry Golden Boy .22 Rifle with a box of bullets. Tickets - $5.00 each or 5 for $20.00 - can be purchased at 2nd Time Around Antique Mall (102 South Rail Street E, Shoshone) or from any Lost N Lava Member. If the evening shows just arent’ enough, each evening after the show, mosey on over the the McFall Hotel for a jam session. It’s bound to be an amazing time of music and fun. On Sunday morning, September 17th, don’t miss Cowby Church. There’ll be good old time gospel music and preaching of the Work like only cowboys can do.

Country Blossoms in Wendell

Shoshone School Bond Fails
Last week’s School Bond Election in Shoshone failed to meet the two-thirds approval needed to pass. Of the 1210 eligeble voters, 281 ballots were cast (23.2% voter turn out). There were 165 yes votes and 117 no votes. The 59% approval left the school district about 20 votes short of passing the bond election.

I have a confession to make. I’m a stooge, and here’s why. About a year and a half ago, an individual came into my office and asked me to climb on board a brand new shiny bandwagon. Unlike some of the wagons that rolled down the streets of Ketchum this weekend, this bandwagon had nice inflatable tires and seemed destined for a smooth ride. As a general rule, I don’t get on bandwagons - that’s not my job as a journalist. I did, however, check it out. I walked around examining the various attributes and found it to be a pretty thing indeed. But, when I kicked the tires, they all went flat. For all its good looks, this bandwagon wasn’t going anywhere. Of course, that didn’t prevent others from climbing on board. It has collected quite a menagerie of folks, and with a lot of whooping and hollering, they have managed to move that bandwagon a couple of feet. If they could only find a hill, it might roll a little farther, though steering is a big problem with flat tires. To try and help things along, the wagoneer has been scouring the land for air - good air, bad air, he doesn’t really care as long as it gets things rolling. Unfortunately, the tires are full of holes and no matter how much air you put in them, they keep going flat. About a month ago, the wagoneer sent me an electronic message. The message abusively and insultingly questioned my integrity. What’s more, it emphatically stated that is was my responsibility to fix the bandwagon’s tires. The tone of the message didn’t bother me in the least - the wagoneer has always been that sort of person - but even if the message had been nicer, I am not in the tire repair business. Last week, another message came - not from the wagoneer, but from one of the riders. Same sort of request for tire repair, and again, the language wasn’t very nice. This message bothered me, not because it was anything unexpected or useful, but because it came from someone I truly like. I’m sorry this person has gotten caught up in the wagoneer’s miasma, but it doesn’t change anything - I don’t repair tires, I just kick them. If they are good, they’re good. If they are bad, well... they’re bad. So, because of that, I am a stooge - a derogatory term for a person who serves merely to support or assist others. In this case, others means individuals with wagonloads of money who have paid me off. Dang! I think they forgot to pay me.

12 years ago I was assisting Jim Super on his wagon train that was coming into Ketchum for the all equestrian parade from Fairfield, Idaho. We were in the mountains with no radios or phone service. I had to come out of the hills to get some gasoline, because of prior help we made during the trip used extra gas. When I got to Sun Valley gasoline was about 40¢-a-gallon higher than it was when I left. I heard people talking about Katrina killing a bunch of people in New Orleans. I went back to the hills and told everyone that gas had gone up forty cents. They were all baffled. Then I told them that some lady named Katrina had killed some people down in New Orleans. That was sad news. “What did she do,” they asked me. “I don’t know, I didn’t get that information while I was pumping gas.” Once I arrived in Ketchum with the wagon train, we cleaned up for dinner, after the stock was taken care of. Then we found out that Katrina was a hurricane and that New Orleans had extensive damage. If I had been on the wagon train again this year, I would have learned that Harvey hit Texas and they were in a similar fix. It would have been a surprise do to lack of communication similar to Katrina. I’m glad Idaho is stepping up again and helping those folks out down there. That is what humanity is all about. I hope everyone had a good Labor Day holi-

day. We had excessive heat this last week. Hopefully you weren’t out working in it. I myself have playing the moving game. The weather may have trimmed me up just a little cause I have sweated gallons. Staying hydrated has been a job. I have even drank some of that tasteless water that come in a plastic bottle. I’m not used to drinking bottled water. In fact, when it first came out 30 years ago, I couldn’t believe it was happening. We have had high water since February and flooding in a minor degree with the runoff. But, does one really know what to do in a situation such as these hurricanes? We may be visiting in another state where hurricanes, tornados, and flooding occur in great depths. Normally, we don’t have the tremendous danger as other states. Now is a good time to research these dangerous weather conditions and be prepared with knowledge as much as possible. Be informed! Know what radio and TV stations to turn to in emergency situations. Stop and read the bulletins that give you information at rest stops. Understand signs of weather so you see things in advance. Be aware of alternate routes to where you are going and coming from. Leave travel plans with family or friends. You may need to depend on your own skills for safety. You could be without cell service and other service such as we were on the wagon train. This is my “Cup of Tee” reminded of a past Labor Day weekend.

Naomi Mae Baker Miranda
Naomi Mae Baker Miranda, 90, a resident of Boise and formerly of Wendell, passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2017 at Garnett Place Assisted Living in Garden City. Naomi was born August 6, 1927 in Howard, Kansas. She came to Idaho at age 13. When she was 18 she married Norman Miranda after a two year courtship. They raised two daughters in Wendell, Idaho, where they were active members of the community. She is survived by her daughters, JoAnn (Andrew) and Jeanne, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A private family memorial service was held in Boise. Teresa Elaine Davis Grausam
Teresa Elaine Davis Grausam, 58, a resident of Mountain Home and formerly of Gooding, Idaho, passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at St. Luke’s Meridian Medical Center. Teresa Elaine Davis was born on April 28, 1959 in Twin Falls, Idaho, the daughter of Bob and Shirley Davis. She was raised and educated in Gooding. Teresa worked as a CNA and home health care provider. Teresa married Tom Grausam on June 29, 1991 in Elko, Nevada. They lived in Mountain Home, Idaho, Forest Grove, Oregon, Boise, Idaho, Forest Lake, Minnesota and Virginia before settling down back in Mountain Home where they have since resided. Teresa practiced unconditional love in her daily life and was a loving wife, mother, sister and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She is survived by: her husband, Tom Grausam of Mountain Home; a son, Michael Harder of Mountain Home and step-son, Jason Harder of Glenns Ferry; two daughters, Hollie Dean Maestas of Mountain Home and Heidi Dean Pace of Filer; a step-daughter, Jessie Tinker Cook of Portsmouth, New Hampshire; two sisters, Faithe Morelock and Bobbie Hernke, both of Boise; seven grandchildren, Makyla, Kaleb, Teresa, Ronnie, Xavier, Ally and Dakota. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Shirley Davis. A celebration of Teresa’s life will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel. Jim Hurst, 92, a Gooding resident, passed away at the Veterans Hospice Center in Boise on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 surrounded by family. Born in Arco, ID, on November 1, 1924, he was the son of Fred and Alice Hurst. He was the youngest of three children, with brother, Fred and sister, Alexis (Martin Young). He married Shirley Mackie in 1949 and they had five children, Louie (Chris), Jesse (Mary), Kathy (Doug) Blandford, Jimbo (Debbie) and Nina (Scott) Ward. They lived and farmed in the Wood River Valley until they retired to Gooding in 1990. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Fred, sister Alexis, wife Shirley and grandson Jerry Ward. There will be a Celebration of Life at the American Legion Hall, 3rd and Idaho, Gooding, Idaho on Saturday September 9, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. The family wishes to thank the VA Hospice center for their loving caring of Jim while there. In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to the VA Hospice Center, 500 W Fort Street, Boise, ID 83702. Governor Recognizes Historic Role of Hunting & Fishing in Wildlife Conservation

Idaho Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter this week recognized the 80th Anniversary of the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act signed into law in 1937. The act was the first of three laws establishing federal excise taxes on hunting and fishing equipment that are used to fund wildlife conservation throughout the United States. The other two laws are the Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act of 1950, which was further expanded in 1984 by the Wallop-Breaux amendment. The Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program, as it is called, has raised more than $57 billion since 1939, more than any other single conservation effort in American History. That money is distributed by formula to Idaho Fish and Game and other state fish and wildlife agencies throughout the country for fish and wildlife conservation. Governor Otter proclaimed August 30, 2017 to be the 80th Anniversary of the American System of Conservation Funding in Idaho. “Hunting and fishing are fundamental parts of Idaho’s incredible outdoor lifestyle,” Governor Otter said. “It’s a past-time and a passion that drives wildlife and habitat conservation efforts while creating jobs and economic opportunity for thousands of our citizens. Beginning September 2, 2017, the temporary Visitor Center at Minidoka National Historic Site will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 5 pm, as weather permits. The ground of the site will still be open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset for self-guided tours on the 1.6 mile walking trail with outdoor exhibits telling the history of the site.
